DEWEYVILLE, TX (March 30, 2016) — A team from Altus Emergency Center Lumberton spent the day with Samaritan’s Purse as they assisted flood victims in Deweyville.

The twelve staff members worked to gut the home of Larry and Joyce, who had lived in their house for 51 years before it took in more than three feet of water earlier this month. They are just one of more than 200 homes that will need the organization’s assistance in the coming days. While they have had several people and groups volunteer to work with them, they are in need of many more.  An estimated 2,000 homes were damaged or destroyed in Orange and Newton counties earlier this month by historic flooding that resulted in a federal disaster
declaration for three counties. Areas like Deweyville sustained roof-high water to schools and homes in the worst Sabine River flood since the late 1880s.
Should you want to volunteer as an individual, family, or group (participants must be at least 14 years old), please call (409) 238-4926.

“Each Altus Emergency Center location gives back to the very communities that have gone above and beyond in supporting us throughout the years,” said Garrett Syphrett, Vice President of Operations and Development.
“All three Altus Emergency Centers hosted a Snow Cone Day during their respective school’s Spring Breaks, offering free snow cones to both children and adults”, Syphrett said.

“However, with the recent river flooding in Southeast Texas, the Lumberton staff turned their Snow Cone Day into an impromptu donation station for the area shelters housing those displaced due to rising water. During the two-hour event, we collected clothing, water, food and monetary donations for flood victims.”
