Top 5 Memorial Day Safety Tips

ALTUS SAFETY TIPS

Let’s Keep it Fun and Safe!
Top 5 Safety Tips to Keep in Mind This Memorial Day Weekend.

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, and everyone is eager to go out and have as much fun as possible. However, small oversights can turn into agonizing moments, at Altus ER Centers we are committed to help our communities stay safe, and therefore we have prepared a small list of Memorial Day Safety Tips to help you and your family enjoy this weekend.

Memorial Day Safety Tip #1

Food Safety

The weather around this time of year is perfect for a picnic or outdoor grilling. To avoid the risk of food poisoning, we recommend:

  • That perishable foods be refrigerated within 2 hours of purchase, if the temperature outside is 90°F or higher, food should be chilled within 1 hour.
  • While grilling or out on a picnic keep uncooked foods in a cooler.
  • To avoid cross contamination, keep meats separate from other perishables.
  • Cover food to avoid insects from depositing germs.

Memorial Day Safety Tip #2

Water Safety

National Safe Boating Week coincides with Memorial Day Weekend as a lot of people are expected to hit the waterways.  Even if you do not plan to be on a boat, there are some standard Memorial Day Safety Tips to keep in mind, in order to avoid a tragic accident:

  • Wear a US Coast Guard approved life jacket that fits properly whenever you are on a boat.
  • Avoid alcohol when swimming, boating or tubing.
  • Designate an adult watcher/lifeguard to keep an eye on children in pools, at the beach, rivers or even hot tubs.
  • Never swim alone and try to stay within eyesight of a lifeguard station.
  • Do not go swimming, tubing or boating after sunset.

Memorial Day Safety Tip #3

Grill/Fire Safety

Emergency care centers see their share of burn victims because of unsafe grilling or bonfire practices. If your weekend plans include grilling or sitting near an open fire, please keep these Memorial Day Safety Tips in mind:

  • Never leave a grill or fire unattended, be mindful of the wind and extinguish all fires completely.
  • Do not grill indoors, keep grills, bonfires and fire pits away from low hanging branches and materials that can easily catch fire.
  • Make sure your grill is properly cleaned before using it, clogged gas burners, and leftover grease can cause a fire to spiral out of control within seconds.
  • When grilling, use the long handle utensils made especially for barbequing and keep an extinguisher nearby.
  • Never add starter fuel to already ignited charcoal & ALWAYS keep children and pets away from the grill and fire pit.

Memorial Day Safety Tip #4

Safe Sun Exposure

Here in Texas, it tends to get really hot. An important Memorial Day Safety Tip is to protect yourself and your family members from extended sun exposure to avoid sunburns or a heat stroke.

  • Wear SFP 15 or higher sunscreen, apply it 30 minutes before exposure and reapply every 2 hours.
  • Use sunglasses and a hat to protect your eyes and always drink plenty of water while celebrating outdoors.
  • If you or a family member feels faint or nauseous, move them to a cool place immediately, if necessary apply cold compresses to the back of their neck and forehead to help lower their body temperature.
  • If you have children, schedule their outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon, do not leave them unsupervised on a hot day.

Memorial Day Safety Tip #5

Travel Safely

This is one the busiest and dangerous travel weekends of the year, follow these Memorial Day Safety Tips to ensure your family’s safety:

  • Always wear seat belts and make sure child car seats are properly installed.
  • Have your car serviced before a long trip.
  • Plan your trip beforehand and give yourself extra travel time.
  • Never drink and drive or allow yourself or anyone else to get into a car with someone who has been drinking.

School Lunches for Lumberton Intermediate School – Altus Gives

POLL RESULTS: "What Children Want More of is Food"

Lumberton Intermediate School Receives a Donation from ALTUS GIVES for School Lunches

When we think back to our days in school, many memories come to mind:  teachers, friends, bullies, crushes, homework, tests and the school lunches at the cafeteria.  For many, lunch was a time of laughing with friends, getting scolded by teachers because of being too noisy and enjoying a welcome break with a yummy school lunch.

Unfortunately, for some, lunchtime is not as happy as for others.  Children coming from underprivileged families may not afford to have their school lunches every day.  Without assistance, these children simply go hungry.  Lunch should be a time to enjoy and leave with a smile, a full stomach and ready to tackle the next class.

Why School Lunches are So Important

Altus Gives Understands the Value of a Healthy School Lunch

We have heard for ages about the importance of eating healthy.  In the case of children it is not a matter of choice, they must have balanced healthy meals three times a day.

The Truth Behind the Importance of School Lunches:

  • Hunger in America is a Reality: According to Mashable“16 Million American kids in America struggle with hunger each year.”  That works out to an alarming “1 in 5 children” not receiving an adequate nutrition or experiencing hunger.  Lumberton is no exception.

  • They Need School Lunches to do Better in School: According to NoKidHungry.org , a good nutrition goes hand in hand with learning as it:  improves school achievements, memory, listening skills; children are better behaved and are less absent and tardy.

  • Only Decent Meal of the Day: Some children don’t have breakfast before school.  According to HealthyChildren.org20 – 30% of children in their adolescence skip breakfast altogether.  In these cases, eating a healthy school lunch is particularly important.  Think of the hours gone between meals. These same children may not have access to a well balanced meal for dinner when they get back home.

  • Eating Healthy has a Direct Impact on their Health: The benefits of providing kids access to a healthy school lunch go way beyond their childhood and teenage years.  According to the CDC.gov, when a child is provided with a well balanced nutrition (including a school lunch) they reduce the risk of health complications in the future such as:  high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, iron deficiency (anemia), osteoporosis and cavities.

Thank You for Your Donations in May!

Thank you to all Who Helped Children Have a Healthy School Lunch in May

During the Month of May 2017, Altus Gives requested donations to be made in order to help underprivileged children enjoy a School Lunch. Thank You for Your Help!

We were able to collect $462 to go towards Lumberton Intermediate School. Their balance was $245.30 and the rest of the money went into a fund for kids that do not have lunch money. Thank you Kelsi Strahan for the suggestion and thank you to all who donated!

Better Ways to Clean Children’s Ears – Emergency Medical Services for Children Day 2017

ALTUS SAFETY TIPS:
Better Ways to Clean Children's Ears

We’ve All Heard About the Dangers of Cotton Swabs.  What are Better Ways to Clean Children’s Ears?

Over the years there has been a lot of debate centered around what are better ways to clean children’s ears.   In honor of Emergency Medical Services for Children Day 2017 (EMSC), we think it is vital to shed light on this subject.  Despite the amount of information available these days, most parents still do not know that a human’s ear canal is designed to be self-cleaning.

The ear canal is lined by skin that slowly moves out of the canal pushing the wax out towards the pinna or outer ear where it will become dry and flaky and eventually fall out on its own.

Having self-cleaning ear canals is great, but as every parent knows, children have an uncanny ability to get dirt and small objects into tiny orifices, so, these must be checked and cleaned regularly. If when inspecting your child, you find that they have inserted a foreign object into their ear canal, it is crucial that you do not attempt to remove it on your own, as you may cause serious damage to your child, instead head out to the nearest Altus Emergency Center to have one of our expert ER doctors and nurses safely remove the object.  Below we list five better ways to clean children’s ears.

There Are Better Ways to Clean Children's Ears

Time to Move Away from the Cotton Swab Tradition and say, “Hello” to Altus Safety Tips!

Pediatricians have been warning parents about the hazards of using cotton swabs to clean a child’s ear for some time now, which prompts the question of which are the best ways to clean children’s ears on a routine basis.  We want to keep them safe!

The following are Five Alternative Ways to clean your child’s ears:

  • #1 Wash Cloth: Since only the outer ear needs to be cleaned, the safest way to do it is with the use of a soft wash cloth. This is best done after a bath or shower as the moisture will soften the wax and any dirt that may have lodged itself in the outer ear. Be gentle and never insert your finger or other object into the ear canal.

  • #2 Mineral Oil: If you suspect your child’s ear wax has hardened or that they may have a buildup, you can use a few drops of mineral oil or olive oil. The oil should be the warmed up to skin temperature, have your child lie on their side and use a dropper to apply the oil to affected ear. After a few minutes, have your child sit up and let the oil and buildup wax drip out.

  • #3 Hydrogen Peroxide: The use of hydrogen peroxide mixed with water in small children is not advisable, it may cause dizziness and vertigo not to mention it may scare and even traumatize the child.

  • #4 Ear Drops: For school age children, the use of over the counter ear drops like Debrox can be useful, but you should consult your pediatrician before applying them.

  • #5 Candling: This method is not recommended for several reasons. First there is a risk of burn injury to the child, inserting the candle in the ear canal may cause damage to the ear drum, not to mention there is no real evidence that candling has any real effect in ear wax removal.

Keep an Eye Out for Any Signs of Danger

Know the Signs – When to Visit an ER

The Following are Three Signs of Alert

  • #1 – If you notice any blood or pus oozing from your child’s ear,

  • #2 – If they are experiencing pain or discomfort in one of both ears,

  • #3 – Or have any change in their hearing.

Hearing is one of the five senses.  The fact that a child’s ears are fragile and are in development must be taken seriously.  You can prevent permanent damage.  If they experience any of the three symptoms listed above, visit the nearest Altus Emergency Center for a thorough evaluation and treatment.
