Men’s Health Awareness Month

Men's Health Awareness & Education

Men’s Health Awareness, Education, and Prevention.

We end June with a special awareness dedication to all men in honor of Men’s Health Education and Awareness Month. This special observance, which was passed into law in 1994 aims to educate the public and to raise awareness of preventable illnesses affecting the health of both boys and adult males.

The different activities organized by public, private and religious organizations during this month, seek to encourage Men’s Health Awareness overall by recommending the male population to get regular checkups and medical advice to increase early detection and treatment.

According to experts, the need to shed light on men’s health awareness is a growing

concern.  Men’s health is experiencing a widespread crisis in America, affecting all communities, ethnic and economic groups. According to the Men’s Health Network, this crisis is due to a lack of awareness, weak health education and culturally induced behavioral patterns in both work and personal lifestyles.  We hope to highlight the importance that regular health screenings have, and why we should encourage the men in our lives to get them.

Common Illnesses that Affect Men

One of the ugly truths that we face is that men’s life expectancy is lower them women’s.  While some ailments are gender specific, in those that are not, men are more likely to die from them than women are. Fortunately, most of these illnesses are preventable through proper men’s health awareness, education, and prevention.  Men can now take steps to avoid potential health problems by recognizing the symptoms, having regular medical checkups, and making healthier life choices.

Heart Disease

A major men’s health awareness concern is heart disease. The term heart disease comprises a number of different conditions, such as coronary heart disease, angina, heart failure, strokes, high blood pressure, and arrhythmias. All can lead to serious and often fatal complications if they are not diagnosed in time. According to the American Heart Association, 1 in 3 adult males in the US already suffers from some sort of cardiovascular disease.

A SERIOUS MEN’S HEALTH CONCERN:

Affects 1 in 3 Men in the U.S.

Cancer

Another major men’s health awareness concern is cancer which is a major cause of concern for men of all ages.  Prostate, testicular, lung, colorectal, and skin are the most common cancers among men.  During recent years, a large effort has taken place to educate the population on the risk and dangers of prostate cancer.  The American Cancer Society recommends that men with an average risk of prostate cancer receive annual screenings after 50 years of age. In the case of those with a higher risk, the screenings should start as early as 40.  It is never too early to have a screening as testicular cancer is more common among young males ages 20 to 54.

Lung Diseases

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) encompasses both emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Most cases of COPD are caused by smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke, the other leading cause of COPD according to the American Journal of Epidemiology is occupational exposure to industrial pollutants. Men who smoke or are exposed to chemicals at work are at a much higher risk of developing lung diseases.  All individuals in the high-risk category should get checked at the first sign of difficulty breathing.

Depression

Depression is a less known men’s health awareness issue.  Studies conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimate that some 6 million men suffer from depressive disorders every year. However, the number could be significantly higher.  Individuals may not know they are depressed given that male depression symptoms do not always include sadness.  Instead, depressed men are more prone to exhibit: fatigue, irritability, sleep disorders, and apathy. In addition, men are less likely to seek help, when feeling depressed. Exercise, keeping a journal, and communicating openly with friends and family are good ways for men to deal with depression. If you exhibit symptoms of depression, it is recommended to seek professional help.

Diabetes

Diabetes refers to both a deficiency of insulin or the body’s decreased ability to use it. If left untreated diabetes can lead to nerve and kidney damage, stroke, heart disease, eye problems, and erectile dysfunction. People with diabetes may not present symptoms, therefore screening tests are extremely important.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends adults age 45 or older get screened for diabetes type 2 every three years.  If you have a history of diabetes in your family you should get tested once a year.

Good Hydration is Vital to Life

National Hydration Day

Hydration: Water is Life

No living organism can survive without water and humans are no exception. Our bodies are made up of approximately 75% water and yet most of us forget to ingest optimal levels of it. As temperatures rise this summer, and you find yourself outdoors playing sports, traveling, or simply relaxing in the sun, it is key to remind ourselves to drink plenty of fluids to stay healthy.

As yesterday was National Hydration Day, it’s a great time to shed light on the importance of maintaining your body properly hydrated and some helpful tips on how to do it.  After all, when the rain clears we will be reminded that it is summer.

The Importance of Good Hydration

Reasons to Drink Water

Our bodies require water to perform a multitude of functions like regulating body temperature, lubricating our joints, carry nutrients and oxygen to our cells, flushing out waste and more. If we do not replenish our water supply throughout the day, our body won’t be able to perform these functions properly. Here are some of the reason why you should drink plenty of water every day:

  • It is critical to your heart’s health: When you are dehydrated, your heart must work harder to pump blood through the blood vessels into the muscles.

  • Dehydration is a serious condition: Being dehydrated can cause serious health problems that can range from swollen feet, headaches, heat stroke, organ damage, and even death.

  • Bad Breath: Your body needs water to produce saliva, one of the purposes of saliva is to curtail the proliferation of bacteria, if you are not producing enough saliva you will have an overgrowth of bacteria which cause bad breath.

  • Dry Skin: Being dehydrated causes blood volume to decrease and this can lead to dry skin, wrinkles and skin laxity.

  • Muscle Cramps: Water is necessary to help the body maintain normal temperatures, when your body overheats the muscles tend to cramp up, in addition, changes in electrolytes, sodium, and potassium levels due to sweating can also lead to muscle cramps.

  • Weight Problems:  Proper hydration helps control calories.  In contrast, insufficient water intake will help create a more sluggish metabolism and high blood cholesterol.

  • Kidney Problems:  Our kidneys’ job is to ride the body of toxins. Insufficient hydration not only puts kidneys to do extra work, it provides an ideal scenario for bacteria growth resulting in potential infections and inflammation.

How Much is Enough?

How Much Water Should I Drink a Day?

The amount of water that you should drink a day varies according to a variety of factors:

  • Weight

  • Sex

  • Amount of exercise/level of activity

  • Temperature

  • Amount of clothing

  • Amount of perspiration

Remember that by the time you are thirsty, you are already becoming dehydrated.  For this reason, it’s always best to drink water regularly to maintain proper hydration.

5 Safety Tips to Get Storm Ready: Tips, Preparation & Readiness

HOW TO GET STORM READY

5 Tips to Get Storm Ready: Tips, Preparation & Readiness

Whether it’s a hurricane or a hurricane, it’s important to get storm ready. Although we hope that it will only a bit more rain and wind than usual, it’s always best to be prepared. We have put together five safety tips that will help you get storm ready.

“Prepare and prevent, don’t repair and repent.” – Unknown.

Storm Ready Safety Tip #1

Storm-Proof-Your-Home

Storm Proof Your Home

Take care of your home and all who are inside. It will only take a few minutes to get your home storm ready:

  • Remove Potential Hazards. Any object that is left lying around outside could pose danger to you, your home or someone else. Secure loose items from the yard, remove dry tree branches and any loose or damaged parts of your home’s exterior.

  • Secure Windows and Place People & Pets indoors

  • Safely Unplug Electronics. Only turn on anything that is absolutely necessary. Remember that appliances that are turned off but remain plugged in may still be damaged.

  • Avoid contamination by storing poisons and garden chemicals above ground level.

Storm Ready Safety Tip #2

Storm-Ready-Build-a-Home-Emergency-Safety-Kit

Build a Home Emergency Safety Kit

Whether you live alone or with a large group, everyone should have a safety kit at home. The following are pertinent items to have in a safety kit that will help make you storm ready.

  • Three days of drinking water & non-perishable food for all members of the family including pets.

  • First aid kit & prescription medications

  • Radio, flashlight & batteries in case the power goes out.

  • Reusable tool & mess kit, multipurpose knife, matches & fire extinguisher.

  • Mobile phone with a spare battery

  • Sturdy Clothes including gloves, jacket, boots, hat, poncho & clean socks.

  • Sleeping bags & tent

  • Extra gas for your car.

  • Store important documents and money in a waterproof bag.

Storm Ready Safety Tip #3

How-to-Get-Storm-Ready-Have-an-Emergency-Plan

Have an Emergency Plan

During any emergency, it’s difficult to think clearly.  Many people panic especially if they didn’t get storm ready.  Having an emergency plan helps you maintain your composure and ensure that you and others act safely, according to the plan.

  • Find the safest places in your home.

  • Have the most important numbers on speed dial.

  • Learn how to safely turn off all utilities.

  • Have 2 – 3 “safe haven” meeting places that everyone agrees on. This way, if you or a lovely one gets separated, or if one of the destinations becomes flooded, they will know exactly where to meet you.

Storm Ready Safety Tip #4

Get-Everyone-Storm-Ready

Get Everyone Ready

There is no use in putting together the previous three points if no one is informed about them. Take the time to inform everyone about how to best get storm ready to make sure the whole team knows what, when, where and how in the event of a storm or any other of emergency.

  • Assign a responsibility to each member.

  • Teach how to use the Home Emergency Safety Kit and when to use it.

  • Pop quiz and run drills to ensure that everyone has a clear understanding of the plan.

Storm Ready Safety Tip #5

Get-Storm-Ready-Care-for-Your-Family

Dry Drowning – Facts You Should Know

ALTUS SAFETY TIPS
Dry Drowning

Dry Drowning: Preventing Another Tragedy

This past week, the tragic death of a 4-year-old in Texas, shocked us all, when doctors told the parents they suspected the child had died from dry drowning. The medical staff at Altus Emergency Centers extends their condolences to the family of Frankie Delgado and would like to take this opportunity to enlighten parents about the dangers and prevention of dry and secondary drowning.

What is Dry Drowning and Secondary Drowning

Both dry drowning and secondary or delayed drowning, occur when a child breathes or inhales water. This can happen in a pool, the ocean, a river, or even in the bathtub.

These submersion injuries can affect both adults and children, however, children are more susceptible because of their size.

The terms dry drowning and secondary drowning, are commonly used interchangeably, but they are in fact very different conditions.

Dry Drowning

Occurs when the individual takes in a small amount of water through their mouth or nose. This water does not reach the lungs, instead, once it reaches the back of the throat, it causes the vocal cords to spasm and close, causing the airways to shut off, making it hard to breathe. The symptoms of dry-drowning usually happen immediately after the incident in the water.

Secondary Drowning

In this type of incident, the airways do not close themselves up, but rather open, letting water into the lungs. Once there, liquid can build up causing inflammation and swelling, making it difficult for the body to get enough oxygen; this condition is known as pulmonary edema. Symptoms of secondary drowning may take between 1 and 24 hours to manifest.

Symptoms of Dry Drowning

Know the Warning Signs

Both conditions share many of the same symptoms, the main difference is how fast they manifest. Typical signs of either incident include:

  • Trouble Breathing

  • Coughing

  • Sleepiness or unusual drop in the child’s activity level

  • Chest Pain

  • Vomiting

  • Abnormal irritability

These types of submersion injuries are rare, and there is no cause for parents to panic every time the child comes in contact with a body of water. According to a 2006 study published in the British Medical Journal the percentage of submersion incidents which result in either dry or secondary drowning is between 2% and 5%.

Having said that, parents who spot any of the above symptoms in their child after it has spent time in the water should immediately rush to any of Altus Emergency Centers for evaluation and treatment.

Most of the time, symptoms can be mild and improve on their own, however, there is no way of telling if this this will happen, and because the symptoms can progress rapidly and become life-threatening, it is better to have medical attention sooner rather than later.

How to Prevent Dry Drowning

Prevention Submersion Injuries

Prevention is always the goal, these recommendations will not only prevent dry or secondary drowning, but any type of submersion incident.

  • Swimming Lessons: Children who are comfortable in and around water are less likely to panic and breathe or inhale water. The recommended age to start swimming lessons is 4-years.

  • Educate: Teach your child to close their mouth when jumping or diving into a pool to avoid water getting in and causing spasms.

  • Beware of extremely cold water: Instruct your child not to jump or dive into a pool if, the water is extremely cold, the natural response will be to gasp due to the temperature increasing the chances of inhalation. Instead teach them to gradually enter the cold water.

  • Keep a close eye: Incidents can happen in a matter of seconds, never leave your child in a body of water, even if it is the bathtub alone for any reason. Children should always wear flotation devices on boats, or when they are learning to swim.

  • Drugs and Alcohol: Parents of teenagers should ensure their children know and understand the danger involved in swimming under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Knowledge Saves Lives

There is Hope

Today, a toddler from Colorado is alive because of Frankie Delgado’s story.  Last week, Gio, a 2 year old from Colorado demonstrated symptoms of dry drowning and his father, Garon Vega rushed him to an emergency room.  Vega had heard about Frankie’s dry drowning tragedy and was able to recognize similar symptoms after a visit to a community pool.

“The X-rays did show that he had a significant amount of water in his lungs, and that it was a good thing that we brought him in because if we hadn’t have, he wouldn’t have made it through the night,” said Vega.  – Source: Fox6Now. Today, Vega thanks the parents of Frankie Delgado for creating awareness as their story saved his son’s life.

Honoring First Responders – Altus Gives

FIRST RESPONDERS:
First to Arrive, Last to Leave

Thank You to all Brave Men and Women Who Rush to Our Aid When We Need it the Most: Our Local First Responders

No one ever plans or wants to be in an emergency.  Most of us live within our daily hustle and bustle aloof to the potential dangers that surround us.

Very few people actually stop and think, “What would happen if?”  The reality is that emergencies do happen but when they do, we know that someone will come to the rescue.  Why do we know this?  We feel safe because time and time again, they have proved themselves through noble acts of service.

First responders are the friendliest, most welcome faces we greet during an emergency.

A Special Calling

Real Life Super Heroes

It takes a special person to be a first responder.

Let’s face it, not everyone can be a super hero.  A first responder embodies heroic traits without expecting fame or fortune.  They are genuine, selfless individuals working hard to help save a lives.

  • To be the first to arrive and the last to leave.

  • To face their fears in order to accomplish a mission.

  • To put themselves in the front line when others run.

  • To believe in humanity when others have lost hope.

  • To sacrifice their own safety in order to save others.

We look up to them as children, we respect them as adults, we honor our Lumberton Community First Responders.

Thank You to All First Responders from Altus Gives!

Thank You For Keeping Us Safe & Healthy!

During the month of June 2017, Altus Gives Honors all of our First Responders, among those: Lumberton Fire/EMS, Lumberton Police Department, Acadian EMS and Republic EMS.

Let’s rally around them, showing our love and support to our local Lumberton first responders. We appreciate all that you do for our community and everything that you do for us!

We are so grateful to work along side some of the most selfless and caring individuals in our community. We want to show a small token of appreciation to some of our local first responders.

Top 5 Sun Safety Tips for Summer

ALTUS SAFETY TIPS

How to Enjoy Fun in the Sun Safely!
Top Five Sun Safety Tips for Summer

We’re kicking off National Sun Safety Week, with our Top Five Sun Safety Tips for summer, brought to you by Altus Emergency Centers. These few simple tips will safeguard you from the consequences of overexposure to the sun. Adverse effects such as sunburns, eye damage, premature aging of the skin, wrinkles, and skin cancer are completely preventable by following our Top Five Sun Safety Tips.

It is important to point out that sunburns are not exclusive to summer time; water, snow and sand reflect the sun’s UV rays which can cause sunburns and increase the risk of skin cancer. Whenever possible, avoid being in direct sunlight between the hours of 10:00am and 4:00 pm daylight savings time or 9:00 am to 3:00 pm standard time. The following are the Top Five Sun Safety Tips, brought to you by Altus Emergency Center:

Sun Safety Tip #1

Sun-Safety-Tips-for-Summer-Sunscreen-Altus-Emergency

Wear Sunscreen

The secret to protecting your skin from damaging UV rays, is to choose the right type of sunscreen.

  • Choose sunscreens that have SPF of 30 or higher which filters 97% of UVB rays.

  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen, which protect you from both UVB rays, are responsible for sunburns and UVA rays which can cause skin cancer and premature aging.

  • Keep in mind that no sunscreen is water proof, those whose label says water resistant, will only last between 40 and 80 minutes while swimming.

  • Insect repellent is known to reduce sunscreen’s SPF by 1/3, if you need to combine them, choose a sunscreen with a higher SPF and reapply your sunscreen often.

Sun Safety Tip #2

Sun-Safety-Tips-for-Summer-Clothing-Altus-Emergency

Protect Your Skin with Clothing

If you are going to be outdoors, it is advisable to wear clothing to cover your skin. Long sleeve t-shirts, long pants, and skirts, in dark colors with a tightly woven fabric offer the most protection.

We realize this may not be the most convenient attire for summer, but even wearing a t-shirt or beach coverup will help. There are special fabrics that are light weight and offer adequate protection from UV rays, try to add these fabrics to your wardrobe.

Sun Safety Tip #3

Sun-Safety-Tips-for-Summer-Wear-Sunglasses-Emergency

Protect Your Eyes

Research has shown that prolonged exposure to the sun and UV rays significantly increases the chances of developing certain eye diseases, not to mention the sun can damage the delicate skin surrounding the eye causing premature wrinkles.

Protect your eyes by:

  • Wearing a wide brim hat, this will also protect your face and neck.

  • Wear sunglasses that block UV rays.

  • Choose sunglasses with lenses that block 99% to 100% of both UVB and UVA rays.

  • Read the label before you purchase your shades. Labels with, “UV Absorption Up To 400nm” or, “Meets ANSI UV Requirements” mean they block at least 99% of UV rays. The ones who say “Cosmetic” only block about 70% of UV rays and not recommended. Do not buy sunglasses that do not have a label.

  • Large-frame or wraparound glasses offer better protection as they will block UV rays coming from different angles.

Sun Safety Tip #4

Sun-Safety-Tips-for-Summer-Shade-Altus-Emergency

Seek the Shade

Whenever possible, choose to be in the shade, especially during midday hours. You can sit under an umbrella, tree or covered area away from the reflection of water or sand during these hours to avoid being sunburned. Remember UV rays reach the ground even when the day is cloudy, or the weather is cold.

If you plan to be outdoors, check your local newspaper, weather service, or visit the EPA website to check the UV index in your area.

Sun Safety Tip #5

Sun-Safety-Tips-for-Summer-Children-Altus-Emergency

Protect Children from the Sun

It is vital to adhere to our Sun Safety Tips in order to take care of the little ones.  Children can get sunburned more easily simply because most tend to spend more time outdoors. As a result, they run an increased risk of being affected by UV rays.

  • Schedule their outdoor activities as early as possible, and try to come up with creative ways to have them play under the shade during peak hours.

  • Do your best to use protective clothing on your child.

  • Teach them the benefits of using sunscreen from an early age, and create the habit of reapplying it often.

  • Infants under the age of 6 months should be kept out of direct sunlight, and should be protected from the sun with hats, the use of sunscreen on infants is not recommended.

National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month

JUNE IS:
National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month

It’s Never “Just a Headache”

As we welcome the month of June, Altus Emergency Centers joins the rest of the medical community in speaking out about National Migraine and Headache Awareness to further awareness of neurobiological diseases like migraines and headaches.

According to the National Headache Foundation, 47% of adults in the United States experience some form of headache each year. Despite being such a common ailment, it remains one of the least researched health conditions. During National Migraine and Headache Awareness month, our goal is to raise consciousness, educate the public and reduce the stigma associated with migraines, cluster headaches, and other similar disorders.

National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month FACT:  There are 150 documented types of headaches, the most common however, are tension, cluster, and migraine headaches.

Migraine and Headache Type #2

Cluster Headache

The next type of headache to detail during National Migraine and Headache Awareness month is the “Cluster Headache”.

This type of headache affects only 1% of the population, mostly men, although some women are affected as well. They are recurring abrupt headaches that occur in cycles. This severe, debilitating pain appears suddenly and affects one side of the head, most often around the eye; nasal congestion or runny nose, droopy eyelids, and facial sweating are frequent during these episodes which can last between 15 minutes to 3 hours.

There is no known cause of cluster headaches, although it is believed there may be a genetic correlation. At this point there is no cure, but medical treatments can reduce the frequency and duration of the episodes.

Migraine and Headache Type #1

Tension Headache

We begin National Migraine and Headache Awareness month by shedding light on the “Tension Headache”. The most prevalent type of headache, the tension headache is described as a constant ache or pressure around the head, especially the temples or the back of the head and neck. This form can last anywhere from a few minutes to days. They can cause light and sound sensitivity, but do not normally cause nausea and rarely disrupt daily activity.

It is believed the cause of these headaches derives from a contraction of the neck and scalp muscles as a reaction to stress and possibly changes in brain chemistry. For the most part, they are easily treated with over the counter medication, like aspirin, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen. However, the overuse of these painkillers can cause a side effect known as rebound headache, where the medication can cause the brain to move into an excited state triggering more headaches. Overuse of over the counter painkillers can also cause symptoms of withdrawal that could trigger another headache.

Migraine and Headache Type #1

Migraine Headache

During National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month serves to educate and inform the public regarding this medical condition so that non headache sufferers will have increased sensitivity for those around them that are being affected.

One misconception people have of migraines, is that it only affects adults.  While it is true that migraines affect the females more often than males, they affect men and women in all age groups including children, it is estimated that 10% of children in the United States suffer from migraines.

The migraine is a genetic neurological disease, caused by a brain that is overly sensitive to certain stimuli considered migraine triggers, stress is among these triggers.

When is it a Migraine?

There are certain criteria to diagnose a migraine.  If you experience any one of the following, you most likely are having a migraine:

  • There has been at least five previous episodes.

  • Headaches last between 4 and 72 hours.

  • There is a moderate to severe throbbing pain concentrated on one side of the head that interferes or disrupts daily activity.

  • Nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound.

  • Some 20% of patients experience aura, in the form of visual distortions or hand or facial numbness.

  • There is a family history of migraine headaches.

There is no known cure for migraines, but there are treatment options that include both lifestyle changes and medication, we encourage patients who suffer from headaches to discuss treatment options with their physicians.
