DSHS Warns Texans to Avoid Naturally-Occurring Anthrax

DSHS Issues Texans an Anthrax Warning

Avoid Naturally-Occurring Anthrax
by Staying Away from Sick or Dead Wildlife

On June 27th, 2019, the DSHS warns Texans to please stay away from sick or dead wildlife to avoid Naturally-Occurring Anthrax.  The following is official message release:

“The Texas Department of State Health Services is sharing steps people can take to protect against naturally-occurring anthrax. Eighteen recent animal deaths in Uvalde County, including two confirmed anthrax cases, have prompted the advice.

Anthrax is caused by spore-forming bacteria commonly found in the soil in southern and southwestern Texas. Deer, sheep, goats, cattle, horses and other animals can contract anthrax when they swallow or inhale anthrax spores while grazing. Animals usually die within two days of showing signs of infection.

Anthrax in humans is rare, though people can contract it through handling a dead or sick animal infected with anthrax. Infection in humans usually occurs through the skin. The infection typically starts out itchy and resembles an insect bite that within two to six days progresses into a painless sore with a depressed black center. Infection can also occur when people consume meat from an infected animal.

While people are susceptible to anthrax infection, no human cases have been reported in Texas this year. Basic precautions can effectively reduce the risk of people contracting anthrax and other diseases from livestock and game animals.”

Tips to Avoid Naturally-Ocurring Anthrax

The following tips were also included in the release by DSHS Authorities:

  • Avoid direct contact with dead animals, including their bones, horns or antlers.
  • Keep pets and children away from dead animals.
  • Do not harvest animals that appear ill or are acting abnormally.
  • Wear long-sleeved garments and gloves when handling, dressing and processing game.
  • Wash hands with soap and water and launder clothes immediately after animal exposure.
  • Minimize contact with animal fluids, brain and spinal tissues.
  • Cook all meat until well done before consuming.

What To Do If You Believe That There is a Possibilty of Exposure?

DSHS also describes the signs of contamination and that you should seek immediate medical care.

“People should contact a doctor if they develop an unusual-looking sore on the hands, arms or other exposed skin. Although it is very rare to contract skin anthrax, this infection requires treatment with antibiotics prescribed by a physician.”

Dangers of Leaving Anthrax Exposure Untreated

If you see the signs of possible contamination, it’s best to get immediate medical care.  Please keep in mind that Altus Emergency is Open 24/7 and you will not have to wait in line before being seen by an ER Physician.

According to the CDC:

“Without treatment, up to 20% of people with cutaneous anthrax may die. However, with proper treatment, almost all patients with cutaneous anthrax survive.”

Also please keep in mind that anthrax is not contagious person-to-person as the flu would be transmitted.  However, the sooner you get medical care, the faster will be the chances of a full recovery and avoid the possibility of long-term effects.  Heed the warning to avoid naturally-occurring anthrax.

Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses

Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses

We all look forward to the long, hot days of summer. But there is a darker side of summer, heat-related illnesses, that most of us don’t know about.

Every year there are approximate 658 extreme-heat related deaths in the United States. Sadly, all these deaths could have been prevented with proper care and prevention.

What Are Heat-Related Illnesses?

Heat-related illnesses are medical conditions that occur when we are exposed to extreme or prolonged hot temperatures. Heat-related illness range from minor illnesses to life-threatening medical emergencies.

There are several heat-related illnesses, including:

  • Heat Stroke
  • Heat Exhaustion
  • Heat Cramps
  • Heat rash
  • Dehydration

What Causes Heat-Related Illnesses?

The human body has a built-in temperature regulating system known as thermoregulation. The way our bodies primarily adjust temperatures is through sweat. When the sweat evaporates, our body cools down.

However, in situations when air temperatures are above 95°F, or there is high humidity, the natural cooling mechanism becomes less efficient, and our bodies can’t cool down fast enough. This is dangerous because very high body temperatures can damage the brain and other internal organs.

Warning Signs and Symptoms of Heat-Related Illnesses

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of heat-related illness and knowing what to do can help save lives.

The following chart was published by the CDC and shows the typical symptoms of the most common heat-related illnesses and how to treat them.

Warning Signs and Symptoms of Dehydration

Dehydration occurs when more fluids leave our body than enter it. Symptoms vary depending on how severely dehydrated we are.

The first symptoms of dehydration include:

  • Thirst
  • Darker Urine
  • Decreased Urine Production

With moderate dehydration, more symptoms develop such as:

  • Dry Mouth
  • Lethargy
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Headache
  • Dizziness

When we lose 10-15% of our body’s water, we become severely dehydrated. In these cases, we experience extreme versions of the symptoms listed above as well as:

  • Lack of Sweating
  • Sunken Eyes
  • Shriveled and Dry Skin
  • Low Blood Pressure
  • Increased Heart Rate
  • Fever
  • Delirium
  • Unconsciousness

Recommended Daily Fluid Intake

Toddlers 1-34 cups
Children 4-85 cups
Boys 9-138 cups
Boys 14-1811 cups
Girls 9-137 cups
Girls 14-188 cups
Adult Men (19 and over)13 cups
Adult Women (19 and over)9 cups
Pregnant Women10 cups
Lactating Women13 cups

How to Prevent Heat-Related Illnesses

The following tips are essential to help protect your health when temperatures are extremely high.

Drink Plenty of Fluids

Follow the guidelines from the chart above.

Replace Salts and Minerals

Sweat removes vital minerals and salts from the body, and therefore need to be replaced. The safest way to do this is through diet, so try eating more fruits and vegetables. You can also drink a sports beverage while exercising or working in the heat.

Wear Appropriate Clothing and Sunscreen

Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. While out in the sun, wear a wide-brimmed hat which can provide shade and keep the head cool.

Sunburn affects the body’s ability to cool itself and causes a loss of body fluids, so apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before you go in the sun and reapply every 2-hours.

Pace Yourself

If you are not used to exercising or working in high temperatures, start slowly and pick up the pace gradually.

If outdoor activities in the heat make your heart pound and leave you gasping for breath, STOP what you are doing. Get into a cool or shaded area, and rest, especially if you become lightheaded, weak, or faint.

Stay Indoors When Possible

The best way to avoid heat-related illnesses is to stay in cool places as much as possible. Avoid being outside for long periods during the hottest times of the day between 10 am and 4 pm.

Remember if you or someone you know is showing the signs and symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, you need to come into the nearest Altus Emergency Centers. Use our online check-in form, and our staff of qualified physicians will be waiting for you at the door.

Both heat stroke and heat exhaustion are dangerous conditions and need immediate medical attention to avoid long term injury or death.

PROTECT YOUR RIGHTS to ER CARE!

There’s No Time to Wait in an Emergency!

There’s No Time to Wait in an Emergency!

We Agree 100%.

Emergencies can happen when you least expect them. When an emergency happens to a loved one, there is only one thing in our minds, get them the help they need, fast!

The problem is that wait times at hospital ER’s are long because of staffing issues and overcrowding. This also affects the quality of service received. The more patients’ doctors must treat, the less time they have, to spend with each of them.

At Altus Emergency Centers, we have always put patients first, and our response times have consistently been faster than the state average. And today, with our new online check-in system, we can guarantee a no wait time for every patient.

By filling out our simple check-in form while in route to one of our centers, our staff will be waiting for you at the door when you arrive.

When is it an Emergency?

Not every illness or injury requires a visit to our ER, but these symptoms certainly do:

  • Chocking
  • Trouble Breathing
  • Head Injuries
  • Injury to Neck or Spine
  • Electric Shock or Lightning Strike
  • Severe Burns
  • Severe Chest Pains or Pressure in the Chest Area
  • Seizures
  • Fainting
  • Pain in the Arm, or Jaw
  • Severe Headaches
  • Suddenly not Being Able to Speak, See, Walk or Move
  • Sudden Weakness or Drooping on One Side of the Body
  • Inhaled Smoke or Poisonous Fumes
  • Sudden Confusion
  • Heavy Bleeding that Won’t Stop
  • Broken Bones
  • Deep Wounds
  • Severe Allergic Reactions with Trouble Breathing, Swelling, Hives
  • High Fever with Headache and Stiff Neck
  • Poisoning
  • Drug or Alcohol Overdose

Time Sensitive Conditions

Many of the symptoms listed above could indicate you are having a stroke or a heart attack. Both conditions require prompt treatment to improve the survival rate.

For instance, following a stroke, patients must receive clot-busting drugs within three hours for the best chance at avoiding long-term cerebral or physical damages.

In the case of a heart attack, patients must receive treatment to unblock clogged coronary arteries no more than 90 minutes after a heart attack.

What’s more, specialized care, including cooling therapy and cardiac catheterization, given after cardiac arrest, has been shown to improve survival.

Chest Pain in Men – Causes & Alerts

Chest Pain in Men

What Could It Be?

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has listed heart disease as the leading cause of death for men in the United States.

So, it is no surprise that when the men in our lives experience chest pain, our first thought is a heart attack. Luckily, not all chest pain in men is a symptom of a heart problem.

Some causes of chest pains are just as dangerous as heart disease, while others are not life-threatening.

What is Causing Your Chest Pain?

Chest pain is the second leading cause of ER visits in America with more than 8 million emergency room visits a year.

The cause of chest pain can be due to conditions affection other organs in the upper abdomen, including the esophagus, lungs, gallbladder, stomach, and heart.

Digestive Causes of Chest Pain in Men

1. Acid Reflux or Heartburn

Heartburn occurs when the stomach acid flows up into the esophagus. The burning sensation and pain caused by the acid are often mistaken for a heart attack.

2. Esophageal Spasm

The esophagus is the muscular tube that connects the throat with the stomach. Sudden and forceful contractions can cause chest pain.

3. Gallbladder disease

Chest pain caused by gallbladder stones usually occurs 30 minutes after eating. Gallbladder pain is typically felt just below the breastbone, and it can extend to the right arm or between the shoulder blades.

Inflammatory Causes of Chest Pain in Men

1. Costochondritis

Costochondritis is an inflammation of the chest wall between the ribs and the breastbone. It can cause a stabbing, aching pain that is often confused with a heart attack. The inflammation, however, is usually caused by trauma from playing contact sports or arthritis.

2. Pericarditis

This is an inflammation of the protective, double-layered sac surrounding the heart. There are many causes including a virus, radiation from cancer treatments, and certain illnesses or injuries. Pericarditis causes sharp, stabbing pain in the center of the left side of the chest. The pain worsens when you take a deep breath or lie down.

Lung-Related Causes of Chest Pain in Men

1. Pneumonia

Pneumonia is an infection that can cause shortness of breath and sharp pains that become worse when you take a deep breath. It is usually accompanied by other symptoms, including fever, chills, or coughing.

2. Pulmonary Embolism

This is a blood clot that has traveled into the lung vessels. It can cause chest pains, often accompanied by a fast or irregular heartbeat, sudden difficulty breathing or feeling lightheaded or faint.

This condition can be life threatening, therefore, if you experience any of these symptoms head to the nearest Altus Emergency Center.

Psychological Causes of Chest Pain in Men

Anxiety or Panic Attacks

These types of attacks are the body’s response to stressful events, they happen without warning and can cause chest pains, shortness of breath, palpitations, and dizziness. The chest pain is usually fleeting, lasting only a moment or two.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Is it a Heart Attack or Something Else?

This simple symptom chart was published by the Harvard Medical School and could help you assess the severity of your chest pain.

More Likely to be a Heart Attack

  • A sensation of pain, or of pressure, tightness, squeezing, or burning
  • Gradual onset of pain for a few minutes
  • Pain in a diffuse area, including a constant pain in the middle of the chest
  • Pain that extends to the left arm, neck, jaw, or back
  • Pain or pressure accompanied by other signs, such as difficulty breathing, a cold sweat, or sudden nausea
  • Pain or pressure that appears during or after physical exertion or emotional stress (heart attack) or while you are at rest (unstable angina)

Less Likely to be a Heart Attack

  • Sharp or knifelike pain brought on by breathing or coughing
  • Sudden stabbing pain that lasts only a few seconds
  • Pain clearly on one side of the body or the other
  • Pain that is localized to one small spot
  • Pain that lasts for many hours or days without any other symptoms
  • Pain reproduced by pressing on the chest or with body motion

What to Do When You Are Not Sure What Is Causing Your Chest Pain

If you experience a recurrent chest pain or pain that lasts for several hours or even days, you should make an appointment with your doctor.

However, if your chest pain is gradually getting worse, with pain building in intensity that is not relieved by resting, you could be having a heart attack and should come to the nearest Altus Emergency Center immediately.

Correctly diagnosing the cause of chest pain is not something you can do at home; only a doctor can do it. And you should never ignore any type of chest pain.

At Altus Emergency Centers, we have the most experienced emergency physicians who can quickly and accurately diagnose the cause of a patient’s chest pain.

How Bad are Energy Drinks for Your Heart?

How Bad are Energy Drinks for Your Heart?

Energy drinks have become a staple in the lives of teenagers, college students, and workers.

This type of beverage is sold as a dietary supplement, that promises to boost concentration, improve physical performance, and reduce fatigue.

The drinks contain caffeine, sugar, and a proprietary “energy blend” that typically includes a combination of the following components:

  • Guarana
  • Taurine
  • Ginseng
  • B vitamins
  • L-Carnitine

Unfortunately, studies show that the consumption of energy drinks has severe adverse side effects on heart health.

The impact of energy drinks on the heart is so severe that it could land you in our emergency room and could potentially kill you.

What the Studies Revealed

There have been several relevant studies conducted in recent years, here are few of the findings:

Study Findings of The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston

The study involved 44 healthy non-smoking students in their 20’s. Researchers performed special tests to measure the blood vessels ability to dilate.

The tests were done before the students were given a 24-ounce energy drink and repeated 1½ hours later.

The researchers found that after having the energy drink, the blood vessels were much narrower. Narrow blood vessels make blood flow more difficult, and this increases the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Study Findings of The University of the Pacific

A study funded by the University of the Pacific and published in the Journal of the American Heart Association

found that energy drinks alter the heart’s rhythm.

The study involved 34 adults aged 18-40. The subjects were asked to fast overnight and were then given two 16-ounce bottles of either an energy drink or a placebo.

The researchers then measured the heart rhythms of the participants with electrocardiogram and blood pressure readings every half hour for a total of 4 hours.

The study concluded that energy drinks significantly prolong the time it takes the heart chambers to contract and relax (QTc interval).

A prolonged QTc interval increases the risk of a person experiencing life-threatening arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) and sudden cardiac arrest.

The researchers also found that the volunteer’s blood pressure increased by close to 5 points and remained elevated for about 6 hours after drinking the energy drink.

Additional Concerns

The energy drink industry is mostly unregulated, and this in itself is cause for concern.

Another concern is the amount of caffeine and sugar these beverages have.

The maximum dose of caffeine that is considered safe by the FDA is 400mg per day, and no more than 200mg per dose.

Shockingly, most energy drinks contain between 240-300mg of caffeine per 8-ounce dose. Not to mention that little is known about the safety of some of the other ingredients contained in energy drinks.

To make matters worse, some of the components may interact with certain gut bacteria to create a compound called TMAO. Higher TMAO levels are linked to heart attacks and strokes.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

The Bottom Line

Energy drinks unsafe for consumption by anyone, but especially young people and anyone with a cardiovascular condition.

Healthy Ways to Recharge Your Batteries

  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Take a 20-minute nap
  • Stay hydrated
  • Exercise
  • Eat small amounts of food more often
  • Lower your stress

At Altus Emergency Centers, we have seen firsthand the devastating effects that energy drinks can have on a patient’s health. We advise you to avoid drinking them and warn your children about the potential risks of consuming them.

What It Takes to Be an Altus ER Physician

What It Takes to Be an Altus ER Physician

Starting this month, Altus Emergency Centers will add its own in-house physicians’ group. This means we will directly employ every doctor working in our facilities.  Only the cream of the crop will qualify to be an Altus ER Physician.

Working in an emergency room is one of the most demanding jobs in the world. The demands are both physical and mental, after all, people’s lives are at stake, and not everyone is up to the task.

From the first day since we opened our doors, our first and most important goal has been to offer the highest standard of emergency care to our patients.

Our commitment to our patient’s wellbeing is the reason why we have gone to extremes to ensure our doctors are the most qualified for the job.

What is an ER Doctor?

Before we discuss what it takes to be an Altus ER Physician, let’s get to know the role of an ER doctor.  An emergency room doctor is one who knows about every aspect of the human body because their job is to diagnose, stabilize, and provide treatment to any patient who comes into the ER.

ER physicians are trained to handle acute (severe or critical) medical problems. They are also trained to use various medical devices to stabilize and save the lives of their patients.

These are some of the tasks ER doctors routinely perform:

  • Evaluate and examine patients
  • Order tests and blood work to help diagnose the patient’s condition
  • Order or administer medications to treat the patient’s injury or illness
  • Consult with other doctors, nursing staff and support staff to decide on the best treatment course for the patient
  • Explain procedures, diagnoses, tests, and available treatments to patients and their families
  • Work closely with specialists who will care for the patient once they leave the emergency r

What Training Do ER Physicians at Altus ER Have?

At Altus Emergency Centers, we hold our staff to very high standards, especially our doctors and nurses. When it comes to selecting the right person to work at any of our facilities, we, of course, take into consideration the preparation and experience of each physician.

Training to become an emergency room physician is not easy; it takes time and a lot of hard work. To become an ER doctor, a person must:

1. Earn a College Degree

Aspiring doctors need a bachelor’s degree to apply to medical school. Although there is no specific major required, its vital that they complete science-related courses in their bachelor’s degree program

2. Pass the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)

Medical schools use the scores from this exam to determine if the applicant has the critical thinking, problem-solving, and writing skills necessary to succeed in the field of medicine.

3. Earn a Medical Degree

Medical degrees involve four more years of studies. The first two years focus on theory and laboratory experiences. While the last two years include clinical rotations in different fields. During this time, students will begin working with patients, taking medical histories, and completing necessary procedures under the supervision of experienced physicians.

4. Obtain a Medical License

Before they can practice medicine, medical doctors need to obtain a license from the state of Texas. To do this, doctors must pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).  The examination tests applicants on their ability to care for patients and work in a medical and emergency setting.

5. Complete a Residency

An emergency medicine residency lasts three years and consists of:

  • Conferences: These conferences cover specific areas of emergency medicine, like cardiovascular or pulmonary treatment.
  • Lab Work: During lab work, ER doctors are trained in specific skills like airway management, repairing of wounds, and orthopedics.
  • Clinical Simulations: Working with mannequins’ students are placed into simulated situations that they might face on a day-to-day basis in a healthcare setting.

Additionally, emergency medicine residency also includes:

  • Peer reviews
  • Seminars
  • Supervised clinical training in a real-world environment.

6. Complete a Fellowship

Emergency room physicians who wish to specialize in a subspecialty must complete a fellowship program.  Subspecialties include:

  • Pediatric emergency medicine
  • Pain management
  • Disaster medicine
  • Toxicology

What is a Surprise Medical Bill – We Got Rid of Them!

What is a Surprise Medical Bill?

Don’t Worry, We Got Rid of Them!

Few things are as unpleasant as having an accident that lands you in the ER. The one exception might be getting hit with an unexpected or surpise medical bill.

But why are you getting a surprise medical bill if you are insured?

Here is What Happens

When you visit an emergency room, regardless of whether it is in-network or not; you may be treated by physicians and other medical staff that may not be part of your insurance plan network.

When this happens, the insurance companies won’t cover the full amount, and you will receive a bill saying you owe the out-of-network provider money. These bills are called balance bills and are commonly referred to as surprise medical bills.

What is Balance Billing?

If the emergency room, and doctor that treated you are both in-network, then you will only need to pay for what is negotiated in your plan, usually this involves:

  • Copay fees
  • Deductibles
  • Co-insurance amounts

However, if the ER or the doctor is an out-of-network provider, you will receive a balance bill, which is the difference between what the doctor charged and what the insurance company paid.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

What Can You Do?

During a medical emergency crisis, nobody has the time to check if a doctor is part of their insurance network.

But fear of not being able to pay for healthcare should never stop you from getting it.

Therefore, in case of an emergency, come to the nearest Altus Emergency Centers immediately. Let us save your life first, and we will resolve the financial part later.

When you receive a balance bill or in other words a surprise medical bill, here are the steps you should follow:

1. Always Request an Itemized Invoice

Texas law requires providers to present an itemized bill upon request. Some providers will send it automatically, but if you don’t get it, ask for it!

Reviewing your bill could help reduce the amount owed in two ways:

  • You can verify there are no duplicate charges
  • You can confirm you are only being charged for procedures, tests, and treatments you received.

Billing departments handle vast amounts of data every day. So, it’s possible for some unintended errors to occur. Carefully reviewing your balance bill is the best way to avoid overcharges.

2. Call Patient Advocate

If you received a balance bill from us, the first thing you should do is contact our Patient Advocate.

Our staff is available to answer any questions and address any concerns you have regarding your bill.

Additionally, our Patient Advocate may be able to negotiate rates with insurance companies to help lower your bill.

We can even offer financial aid or customize a payment plan that works for you.

Surprise Medical Bills May Soon be a Thing of the Past in Texas

Earlier this month, in a unanimous vote, the Texas House approved Senate Bill 1264.

When signed into law, SB 1264 will prohibit out-of-network providers from invoicing patients for their services directly.

Instead, the law would allow providers and insurers to negotiate with one another to secure payment. The legislation also creates state regulatory authority over that arbitration process.

What this means for you as a Consumer

This is excellent news for you as a consumer!

This Senate Bill will give us more leeway to push insurance companies to pay fair prices for the services provided without having to burden you.

Altus Emergency Centers Goes the Extra Mile

In case you haven’t heard the news,  at Altus Emergency we directly control physician billing to ensure you superior service.

Since June 2019, all patients are treated exclusively by our in-house local doctors.

Additionally, this means we control the entire billing process so you will never receive a surprise medical bill from us. Physician services will still be billed separately for transparency purposes.

What Does that Mean to You?

  • We hire local doctors. Therefore, you can expect to see a friendly and familiar face every time you visit us.
  • Better Quality Control & Greater Accountability
  • More Qualified Physicians. We hold our physicians to a higher standard than that required by the State Board.  Visit our Altus Physicians Group page for more information.
  • We control billing in house. No Balance or Surprise Billing
  • Transparency. Physician bills will remain separate to maintain transparency. You will be able to see and review the breakdown of the costs.
  • Local Billing. Bills will come from our Regional office in Southeast Texas

At Altus Emergency Centers, we are always looking out for your health and your finances. Contact our Patient Advocate if you have any questions or concerns with your bill.
