Taking Care of Our Red Oak Community

Taking Care of Our Red Oak Community

Time flies when you are fulfilling your purpose. It’s now been three years since we first opened our doors and our hearts to the lovely communities of Waxahachie and Red Oak.

Today we are filled with gratitude and appreciation for all our Patients, neighbors, and friends. You took us in and made us feel like family, and every day we strive to do the same for you all.

It’s always a blessing to serve a community that shares many of the core values of our organization: family, honesty, and a commitment to excellence. This community inspires us to continue to grow and improve our service every day.

Different is Better – How Altus Innovates Emergency Care

One of the biggest grievances of ER patients is the treatment they receive from doctors, nurses, and administrative staff.

This reality offends us deeply; that is why we promise you will never encounter indifference in our ER; that’s a claim very few can make!

At Altus Emergency, we are Big Enough to Matter, but also Small Enough to Care. Our team of local doctors, nurses, and administrative professionals will always treat you like family when you visit us.

Innovating Every Day

We work under the belief that emergency care should be fast, personalized, convenient, and affordable.

At Altus, we’ve reinvented what it means to be a real emergency center. It’s hard to compare us to anyone else. When you visit our facility, this is what you can expect:

  • Convenient location close to home
  • World-class medical attention provided by local doctors and nurses that genuinely care about you and your family
  • Minimal wait times, you’ll see a medical professional within minutes not hours
  • Affordable treatments
  • Simple, no-hassle billing process

Conveniently Located

We chose a site location that is convenient for all residents of Waxahachie and the beautiful town of Red Oak.

If you’re like most of our patients, you don’t want to leave the area for care. That’s why we make it convenient for you to get treated right here at home.

Time is of the essence in an emergency, and it’s reassuring to know you don’t need to drive an hour out of your way because Altus Emergency Center is only 10 minutes away.

Our state-of-the-art facility has easy access and offers ample parking.

Our Services

Our services aim to provide world-class emergency care to all patients, including children. We have certified doctors and nurses working at our ER 24/7. There will never be an instance where you come in, and there won’t be a doctor available.

Our facility offers all the services required to treat medical emergencies, including X-Rays, EKGs, CT Scans, pediatric care, and full-service diagnostic lab.

With Us Every Second Counts

During an emergency, the last thing you want to be worrying about is how long you will have to wait at the ER before you see a doctor.

Here at Altus Emergency Cents, we understand every second matters, which is why we take them VERY SERIOUSLY.

There is absolutely no time to wait in an emergency. We work hard to ensure every patient who comes to us in an emergency, is seen by a doctor right away.

There are no lines at our facility, and when you visit us, you will encounter some of the most caring individuals in the medical profession who just want to provide you with the best emergency care possible

Ease your mind knowing that here at Altus, we understand the urgency of your situation, and we will do everything in our power to make you happy and healthy again.

With Us, You’ll Never Overpay

Nobody should lose sleep, trying to figure out how to pay for their emergency care.

At Altus, we revolutionized how ER’s work. To help make our patient’s lives a little easier after an emergency easier, we brought our billing in house.

As part of our commitment to taking care of the community, we hired doctors to work directly with us, and we negotiated down their doctor fees to ensure you never have to overpay for emergency care again.

If you ever have questions about your medical bill, we encourage you to please reach out to our friendly, expert Patient Advocate.

Lendall Baker is here to help you get the most from your insurance coverage.  Please call or email him now if you have recently received a medical bill.

The staff of Altus Emergency at Waxahachie is proud of the service provided to members of these communities, and we vow to continue improving to better serve you for years to come.

Honor Our Heroes by Celebrating Safely Memorial Day Weekend

Honor Our Heroes by Celebrating Safely

This Memorial Day, we encourage you to join us in paying tribute to our fallen heroes. Traditionally this special celebration is reserved for those courageous men and women in uniform who died protecting our freedom and way of life.

This year we are fighting a silent war against an invisible enemy who has taken the lives of far too many loved ones. The fight against COVID-19 has created a new type of hero in the form of healthcare workers and first responders. This year we would also like to honor them for paying the ultimate price while trying to keep us all safe.

To all our heroes and their families, we are eternally grateful.

Celebrating Memorial Day Safely

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, which means outdoor parties and BBQs are on everyone’s mind.

COVID-19 concerns surround this year’s celebrations. Therefore, we encourage you to use extra precautions and continue to follow all sanitary recommendations and practice social distancing. The good news is you can still have lots of fun.

Grill Safely

We are looking forward to spending time with our loved ones, and gathering around the grill to chat is something that comes naturally. However, this year, make sure to keep a safe distance of at least 6-feet between you and any other guests

During the summer months, we see our fair share of grill-related burn injuries. This year, we want to minimize these so please keep in mind these safety tips:

  • Don’t leave the grill unattended while you are using it.
  • Never add charcoal fluid, gasoline or other flammable substances to the coals once lit
  • Don’t grill inside the house, under a tent, inside a camper or any other enclosed area
  • Keep your kids and pets away from the grill once you’ve started the fire
  • Always grill in a well-ventilated area away from the house, trees, and anything that could catch fire
  • Use long-handled utensils made for grilling

Stay Close to Home

Many of us take advantage of the holiday to go on a long road trip. With the current public health crisis staying close to home is recommended. Instead of visiting friends and family who live far away, schedule a virtual video call to catch up.

Staying close to home can save you money and help lower the risk of infection. So plan to visit a nearby park, or take the family on a bike ride in your neighborhood.

Water Safety

If you plan on going to a pool party or tubing in a river, remember to follow all state and local officials’ safety recommendations.

Social distancing rules still apply even in the water. This means you need to be vigilant and keep a safe distance between you and other people who don’t live with you.

Also, don’t share snorkels, goggles, nose clips, or other personal items.

Honor Our Fallen Veterans

Memorial Day is the perfect time to pay our respects to our local fallen heroes if you can visit their graves and monuments in or around your community.

Call their relatives if you know them to let them know you are thinking of them, we guarantee it will mean the world to them.

Keeping Fit During Lockdown Can Benefit Your Immune System

Keeping Fit During Lockdown Can Benefit Your Immune System

The lockdown measure is crucial in the fight against the spread of COVID-19. However, many of us are feeling the impact both on our mental and physical well-being.

But why should we try keeping fit during lockdown?  We’ve all heard how being sedentary is bad for our health, so staying active during these difficult and strange times is important.

Exercising can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol, which in turn can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. When we exercise regularly, we also help maintain muscle mass and bone density.

But what many of us didn’t know is that physical activity can also help boost our immune system, something that is highly important these days.

Here is how keeping fit during lockdown help improve our immune system:

  • It helps flush bacteria out of our lungs and airways
  • Exercise increases white blood cell circulation. White blood cells are the ones who help our body fight disease. While we exercise these cells more quickly and can help detect illnesses faster.
  • During exercise, our body temperature rises. This temporary rise in body temperature may prevent bacteria from growing, and therefore it helps our bodies fight infection better
  • Physical activity slows down the release of stress hormones. Too much stress increases the chance of illness, so reducing our stress levels can help us stay healthy

Keeping Fit During Lockdown Gives You Even More Health Benefits

Exercising is also a great way to ward off some of the psychological effects, including depression and anxiety, of being cooped up at home for a long time.

Because of the public health crisis we are facing, going to the gym is not possible. Thankfully, there are many ways to stay active even during the lockdown.

You can try one or several of the following as long as you maintain a safe distance from other people:

  • Bicycling with your kids a few times a week
  • Taking daily 20 to 30-minute walks
  • Going for a run in the park

How Can I Get Tested for the Coronavirus?

If you can’t or don’t feel up to leaving the house to get some exercise, there are also lots of good options to stay physically active at home. Many of these activities don’t even require any special equipment, so don’t worry about having to spend money.

If you already own a stationary bike or a treadmill, then try to use it for 30-minutes at least three times a week. If not, then we have a few suggestions for you to try.

  • Walk briskly through your home for 10 minutes. You can even do this two or three times a day
  • If your home has stairs go and up down them several times in a row
  • Dance, dance, dance! Put on some music and dance around the house, either alone, with your spouse or kids. Dancing will get the blood flowing and help you get in a better mood
  • Borrow your kids skipping rope and skip around the driveway
  • Dust-off those long-forgotten Pilates, fitness, yoga, or tai chi DVDs
  • Subscribe to a YouTube fitness channel or download a free fitness app
  • Do a few sets of squats or sit-to-stands from a sturdy chair, push-ups against a wall, and lunges or single-leg step-ups on the house stairs

Need Help?  Rural County Contacts

While exercising is good for you, you should be careful not to overdo it. If you already exercise regularly, you should not exercise more just to try to boost your immune system.

Heavy, long-term exercise can cause more harm than good as you become more prone to injuries. The good news is Altus Emergency Centers remain open 24/7 even during this health crisis.

We are here to help you recover from simple sports injuries to more severe conditions such as heart attacks. For your peace of mind and protection, we follow the strictest sanitary protocols, so please, if you need medical attention, don’t hesitate to come to our ER’s.

Don’t Forget About Your Mental Well-Being

Don’t Forget About Your Mental Well-being

In these last couple of months, we’ve all had to adjust our way of life one way or another.  Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us are facing a great deal of uncertainty our mental well-being is at risk.

These days it seems there are just too many things weighing on our minds.  We now worry about the health and safety of our loved ones more. Most of us spend countless sleepless nights thinking about our family’s financial stability and, of course, our job security.

To this, we must add the pressure to maintain social distance, feelings of isolation, and boredom. All these things can leave us feeling scared, confused, angry, irritable, stressed, and anxious.

While all these emotions are valid and expected in a time of crisis, they can take a toll on our mental well-being, and ultimately affect us physically as well.

For this reason, we need to recognize the signs of mental distress and find effective ways to deal with them.

Here we share some simple tips to help you cope with stress and anxiety. These tips can be helpful whenever we are feeling overwhelmed, not only during these trying times.

1. Create a Daily Schedule

During this stay in place ordinance, days can easily become a blur, and soon you will have trouble even knowing which day it is.

Planning your day, which might include a to-do list will give you a sense of purpose and help you feel in control.

However, remember to set achievable goals; otherwise, your to-do list will become another source of stress.

While you plan your day, make sure to set apart some time for a fun activity. It could be doing an online yoga class, reading a book, doing an arts and crafts project alone, or with your kids. It doesn’t need to be a fancy activity; it just needs to be fun for you!

2. Reach Out and Connect

Humans need social interaction, whether it’s a little or a lot; we all need to feel connected to someone or our community.

Social distancing is necessary to try and stop the spread of COVID-19. Still, thankfully we live in an era where technology allows us to connect with those we love easily.

Many apps allow us to video chat with friends, and even a simple phone call can put us at ease knowing our friends and family are hanging in there and are out of harm’s way.

Having someone reach out to see how you are doing can help ease the feelings of loneliness and isolation.

So please reach out and connect, you could make someone’s day brighter.

How Can I Get Tested for the Coronavirus?

3. Look for Credible Sources to Stay Informed

The amount of information available to us regarding COVID-19 can be overwhelming. Most of the news we see is negative and scary, and to make matters worse, a lot of it is fake.

There is no shortage of conspiracy theories and fake science on the internet, and it’s not always easy telling the real stories from the fake.

All these stories only add to the stress we are already feeling. To avoid being bombarded with fake information, only follow sites managed by local and federal health authorities such as the and trusted news sites.

As an example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides accurate information and helpful guidance to deal with the stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

4. Stay Active and Healthy

Staying home doesn’t mean you have to sit on the couch all day. There are plenty of physical activities you can enjoy while still maintaining the necessary social distance.

You can go for a walk around your neighborhood, join an online workout class, or even spend some time in your prettying up your yard.

You should also avoid eating junk food or drinking alcohol in excess.

5.  Don’t Forget About Your Spiritual Needs

Many of us miss going to church on Sunday, but that shouldn’t stop us from addressing our spiritual needs.

Our religious beliefs provide great solace in times of distress, and if you find comfort in prayer, dedicate a few minutes a day to this practice.

You can organize an online bible reading group, or schedule a meeting with a spiritual counselor, pastor, or priest who can provide some guidance and help you through these tough times.

Remember, God is everywhere.

Altus Emergency Centers remain open to support you and your loved ones in these trying times. We continue to work closely with community leaders and health officials to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the people we serve.

Pet Safety During COVID-19

Pet Safety During COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic is all over the news, and you’ve probably already read all our safety tips and guidelines.

Now it’s time to talk about the furry members of our family. We’ve received many questions regarding the safety of your pets and having them around your family.  “What about Fido?” Let’s learn about pet safety during COVID-19.

Here we hope to clarify as much as possible all your questions. The information used to answer the following questions comes from the US Department of Agriculture. We recommend you visit their website for more details https://www.usda.gov/coronavirus.

Furry friends Pet Safety During COVID-19

Can I get COVID-19 from my pet or other animals?

One of the first questions of concern about pet safety during COVID-19, was pet to human contamination.  From what we know so far, there is little chance that your pet or farm animal can spread the virus that causes COVID-19.

There have been a few reports of pets and zoo animals testing positive for the SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. However, in all cases, the animals had close contact with a person who was already sick with COVID-19.

To avoid your pets getting infected with the virus, the authorities recommend you follow these guidelines:

  • Limit the interaction your pets have with people or other animals outside of your home
  • Walk your dog with a leash and maintain a distance of at least 6-feet between them and other people or animals
  • Avoid going to the dog park and other public places where many people and dogs gather
  • Keep your cat indoors as much as possible

How Can I Get Tested for the Coronavirus?

If I get sick with COVID-19, could I infect my pet with the virus?

There’s still a lot we don’t know about the virus, but there is evidence that sick humans could infect their pets and other animals.

For now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that anyone who is sick with COVID-19 avoid or limit their contact with animals until more is known.

If you are sick, you ask a healthy family member or friend to take care of your pets until you are healthy again.

Cats Pet Safety During COVID-19

Need Help?  Rural County Contacts

Can pets carry the virus that causes COVID-19 on their skin or fur?

We know pets can carry certain bacteria and fungi on their fur and hair. However, there is no evidence that viruses, including the one that causes COVID-19, can spread to people from the skin, coat, or hair of pets.

Since we do know pets can carry germs that can be harmful to our health, it’s always good to wash your hands before and after you interact with them.

Which animals can get COVID-19?

The first confirmed case of an animal infected with SARS-CoV-2 in the United States was a tiger living in a New York zoo.

We also know of a few cases where dogs and cats have tested positive after having close contact with a person sick with COVID-19.

Researchers have concluded that ferrets, cats, and golden Syrian hamsters can get infected with the virus and spread it to other animals from the same species.

The same study found that pigs, chickens, and ducks did not become infected or spread the infection to other animals.
