Two Altus ER Centers Locations Are Now CIHQ Accredited

Two Altus Emergency Centers Locations Are Now CIHQ Accredited

    Altus Emergency Centers CIHQ Accredited.

Altus Emergency Centers announced that it had obtained the Center for Improvement in Healthcare Quality (CIHQ) accreditation for two of its locations.

The Altus Emergency Centers in Waxahachie and Lake Jackson recently received accreditation by one of the leading nation-wide accreditation providers for free-standing emergency centers (FSEC).

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) fully endorses the prestigious CIHQ free-standing emergency centers (FSEC) accreditation program.

It bears mentioning that the ACEP is the leading professional body for emergency physicians and the organization responsible for setting the standards for emergency medical care in the United States.

Altus Emergency Centers CIHQ Accredited

The Process of Accreditation

Obtaining CIHQ accreditation is not an easy process. Any Emergency Center striving to achieve certification must first successfully implement and prove compliance with the strict standards set by the accrediting body.

A crucial step towards Altus receiving accreditation was passing the announced onsite review from CIHQ representatives, where the agents evaluated every aspect of the service provided at the two Emergency Center locations.

The team of CIHQ surveyors reviewed different areas, including management, leadership and administrative procedures, the environment of care, infection prevention and control protocols within the emergency center grounds, as well as emergency management.

Why Altus Emergency Centers Became Accredited

Altus Emergency Centers is synonymous of excellence among providers of emergency medical care in all the communities they serve.

Their decision to become CIHQ accredited is proof of their continued promise of providing the best care to the residents of Waxahachie and Lake Jackson.

Having accreditation status helps ensure that patients receive excellent emergency care that far exceeds minimum standards for safe, quality healthcare. This way, patients can rest easy knowing they are in the best hands.

Ongoing Improvements

Accreditation certificates are valid for 36 months; during this time, Altus Emergency Centers must be in continuous compliance with CIHQ standards, requirements, and policies.

Before the 36 months expire, both accredited Altus ER locations must undergo another full survey to maintain their accreditation status.

Additionally, during the 36 months that the accreditation is valid for, the Waxahachie and Lake Jackson locations must continuously comply with all safety standards and policies as stipulated by the CIHQ.

To ensure its compliance, the accrediting body will monitor and periodically survey both locations. The purpose of these ongoing surveys is to help identify deficiencies and, when possible correct them in real-time.

“Our staff worked very hard to implement improvements in all areas ahead of our onsite visit. The result of the survey shows what an excellent job they did. This level of commitment from our staff will undoubtedly reinforce the trust we’ve earned over the years from the communities we serve.” Commented Mr. Kevin Herrington President and CEO of Altus

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Immediate Benefits for the Community

Having a CIHQ accredited emergency center close to home offers many benefits to the residents of Waxahachie and Lake Jackson, namely the implementation of standardized safety and service procedures and protocols.

Therefore, patients can expect to receive quality medical services in a safe environment equipped with the latest technology anytime they need to visit the ER.

‘While having received accreditation is an important milestone for our organization. Our primary goal has always been to provide our patients with the highest quality emergency medical care. This achievement confirms how much we value the wellbeing of our patients and their families.” Kevin Herrington

Common Summertime Injuries

How to Avoid Common Summertime Injuries

Make it a priority to learn to avoid common summertime injuries to make it the best one ever! Summertime brings warm weather and plenty of fun outdoor activities like cookouts and pool parties.

While we are all looking forward to a fun-filled summer; we cannot overlook the fact that ER visits increase during the summer months.

So, before you drink one more beer, run that extra mile, dive into your pool or take a nap in the sun, we advise you to read on.

Top Three Common Summertime Injuries

We’ve asked our doctors to list the most common reasons why people end up in our Emergency Centers during the summer months and what can be done to prevent them. Here is what we learned.

Heat-Related Illnesses

A 2015 study from researchers at Brown University found that heat-related injuries significantly increased once the thermometer hit 75°F.

According to a study from the CDC, some 2000 Americans die every year from weather-related causes. Of these, 31% are due to excessive natural heat exposure.

Emergency Room visits for heat-related illnesses range from mild to severe and include the following:

1. Heat-Stroke

The most severe heat-related illness occurs when the body temperature rises rapidly, and the sweating mechanisms fail preventing the body from cooling down.

Should You Go to the ER?

Heat-stroke can cause death or permanent disability if the patient is not rushed to the ER immediately.

2. Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion is the body’s response to extreme loss of water and salt, usually due to excessive sweating.

Should You Go to the ER?

You should come to the nearest Altus Emergency Center for evaluation and treatment if you suspect you or someone you know is suffering from heat exhaustion.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

3. Rhabdomyolysis

This medical condition is associated with heat stress and prolonged physical exertion, which causes the rapid breakdown, rupture, and death of muscle.

Rhabdomyolysis can cause irregular heart rhythms, seizures, and damage the kidneys.

Should You Go to the ER?

Yes, anyone suffering from rhabdomyolysis needs immediate emergency medical care.

How to Avoid Heat-Related Illnesses

  • Be mindful of the temperature outdoors
  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid being in the sun for long periods
  • Avoid being outdoors between 2-4pm the hottest hours of the day

Swimming-Related Injuries and Drowning

Our doctors see a fair amount of swimming-related injuries during the summer.

The injuries are mostly caused by:

  • Diving into a body of water
  • Boating accidents
  • Drownings

How to avoid Swimming-related injuries and Drowning

  • Supervise children when they are in or around a pool, lake, river or ocean
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Wear a lifejacket
  • Always jump into a body of water feet first
  • Look for underwater hazards before going into the water
  • Stay in designated areas
  • When possible, choose to swim in areas where lifeguards are present

Should You Go to the ER?

All drowning victims need immediate emergency medical attention.

Any swimming injuries which result in deep lacerations need to be evaluated by a medical professional.

Victims who have lost consciousness due to a swimming-related incident need to be taken to the nearest emergency room for evaluation.

Sports Injuries

During the summer months, people usually practice more outdoor activities from playing frisbee, to taking up a sport such as football, baseball, or soccer.

Because of this increase in activity, our ER doctors see a lot more sports injuries during this time of year.

ER visits from sports injuries vary in type and severity, some are just mild sprains which will heal with rest, others involve torn ACL’s or even a broken bone.

How to Avoid Sports Injuries

  • Warm up and cool down before and after any physical activity
  • Be mindful of your physical condition, listen to your body and don’t overdo it
  • Wear protective gear
  • Learn the right techniques to play any sport
  • Rest when tired
  • Stay hydrated

Should You Go to the ER?

You should come to the nearest Altus Emergency Center for evaluation and treatment in case of:

  • Concussion
  • Neck injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Broken bones
  • Dislocated shoulders
  • Torn muscles or tendons

The key to enjoying your summer is caution, nothing puts a damper on your plans like an accident and an unexpected trip to our emergency room. Therefore, always take the necessary precautions to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

But don’t worry, Altus Emergency Centers will always be here to take care of you and your family in case of a medical emergency.

How to Prepare for Hurricane Season

How to Prepare for Hurricane Season

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting we will have an above-normal hurricane season this year.

During an average hurricane season we will have 12 named storms, six of which become hurricanes with winds of 74 mph or higher. Out of those six, three turn into major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or higher.

This year, NOAA predicts we will likely have between 13 and 19 named storms. Up to 10 of these storms will become hurricanes, and between 3 to 6 could become major hurricanes.

With such an active hurricane season, the need to be prepared is highly important. Here is a helpful guide to help you get organized and prepared in case of a hurricane disaster.

Prepare Your Home Emergency Supply Kit

Should a hurricane make landfall in our area, roads will be flooded or blocked by debris, power lines, and water supply pipes may be damaged, leaving us no choice but to stay home.

Having an emergency supply kit is essential to survive at home during a disaster.

What to include in your Emergency Supply Kit?

Your supplies should last at least two weeks, and should include:

  • Easy to prepare nonperishable food
  • Drinking water, you should have one gallon per person per day
  • Flashlight
  • Extra batteries
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Cell phone with chargers
  • Disinfectant
  • Soap and other personal hygiene products
  • Hand sanitizer
  • First Aid Kit
  • Copies of personal documents make sure to include a list of medications you are taking and any illnesses or allergies you have
  • Emergency contact numbers of family, friends, and local authorities
  • Emergency blankets
  • Extra cash

Evacuation Emergency Kit

Have an evacuation emergency kit ready in case you need to leave your home. Prepare your go-bag in advance; make sure to include food and water supply to last at least 3-day.

To help protect yourself and your family from COVID-19, make sure you include:

  • Reusable face coverings for everyone in your family, however, these are not recommended for children under age 2
  • Hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and other personal hygiene items
  • A change of clothes
  • Emergency blankets
  • A 1-month supply of any prescription medication you take

Medications

If you take any medications, you should speak to your doctor to ensure you have a one-month prescription on hand in case of a disaster. Remember, many pharmacies could be closed, and medications may be hard to find.

Also, prepare to have over the counter medications at home, including cough syrup, pain killers, and fever-reducing drugs.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Updating Your Disaster Plan

You may already have a disaster plan in place from previous years; however, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, some shelters may no longer be available.

Make sure to contact your local authorities to obtain an updated list of shelters in your area.

Stay Informed

  • Subscribe to weather apps to receive updated weather information.
  • Follow social media accounts of community leaders and agencies to receive emergency alerts
  • Learn the jargon used in emergencies, for example; a “watch” means you should get ready to act; a warning means you should spring into action immediately.

Stay or Go

If your local authorities recommend evacuation, don’t hesitate. Grab your emergency evacuation kit, gather your family, including your pets and leave.

Make sure you have a list of shelters available in your community or have plans to stay with family or friends outside the affected area.

Make sure you have a planned route for how to get to your safe place that includes alternate routes.

Set a place where you and your family can meet in case everyone is not home at the time of the evacuation.

Altus Emergency Centers will always be here for you and your family. We stayed open during hurricane Harvey, and we will remain open should another similar disaster impact our community.

Pediatric Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome Temporally Related to COVID-19

Pediatric Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome Temporally Related to COVID-19

A rare condition likely linked to COVID-19 has been reported in hundreds of children across Europe and North America.

Last month the World Health Organization (WHO) shared the news of several cases involving children and adolescents who required admission to intensive care units (ICU).

The hospitalizations were due to a multisystem inflammatory syndrome that resembled other conditions such as Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome.

These children displayed overlapping symptoms of COVID-19, Kawasaki disease, and toxic shock syndrome. Doctors are calling this new ailment multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children or MIS-C.

Doctors have already identified cases of MIS-C in the United States, and at least three children have died from it in New York.

Although this condition is rare, we should all know what to look out for to protect our children.

Symptoms to Look Out For

Health officials from the World Health Organization as well as doctors in the U.S. and Europe warn parents to look for the following signs:

  • Persistent fever over 101°F
  • Prolonged abdominal pain
  • Skin rash
  • Bloodshot eyes or conjunctivitis
  • Racing heart
  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammation and swelling of hands, feet, lymph nodes and neck
  • Sore throat
  • Vomiting

What is Kawasaki Disease?

Kawasaki Disease is a severe condition that can cause inflammation of the arteries, and the leading cause of coronary heart disease in children. The effects of the disease can be lifelong, and it can lead to cardiovascular problems, including aneurysms and heart attacks.

The Link Between Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children and Adolescents and COVID-19

COVID-19 appears to be a trigger to this new multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children and adolescents. Many of the children who present symptoms of MIS-C also tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies, meaning they had the virus at some point.

Doctors now know that COVID-19 infection affects the body’s T-Cells and appears to reduce their ability to contain the inflammatory process.

The main difference between classic Kawasaki Disease and this new illness is that pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome can affect all the organs, not just the blood vessels and heart.

How Concerned Should You Be?

According to experts, kids seem to be part of the population least affected by COVID-19, and most have mild symptoms. However, they can develop severe complications, making it extremely important for parents to stay vigilant.

As mentioned before, multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in children and adolescents is uncommon. There are few cases reported worldwide, and although parents should be on the lookout for symptoms, there is no reason to panic.

When to Seek Medical Attention

If your child shows symptoms compatible with COVID-19, you should have them tested as soon as possible.

If one of your kids also shows any of the signs and symptoms mentioned above, please bring them to the nearest Altus Emergency Center for evaluation.

A prompt diagnosis accompanied by appropriate medical care can lower the risk of permanent organ damage.
