Recent Signs & Symptoms of COVID-19

Signs & Symptoms of COVID-19

The new coronavirus continues to spread rapidly in some of our communities. By now, most of us know someone who is directly affected by COVID-19, which can raise our levels of anxiety with good reason.

With so much information going around social media, many of us feel at a loss. With the virus continually mutating, and new research becoming available almost every day, the questions linger. How can we know if we have the virus, which are the signs and symptoms to look for before we reach out for help?

At Altus Emergency Centers, we highly recommend you get your information from official sites such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Here we will try to provide you with the most common signs of symptoms of COVID-19 so you can do an initial self-assessment so you can know when to seek medical help.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Early Signs of COVID-19

Although there is no specific order in which symptoms can manifest, some of the most common early signs of infection include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Tiredness

Common Symptoms of COVID-19

  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Muscle aches
  • Chills
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose or feeling congested
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache

More Recently Discovered Symptoms of COVID-19

Every day as more data becomes available, researchers and doctors are noticing other symptoms of COVID-19.

Some symptoms discovered lately include a new loss of smell or taste and sudden confusion. If you or someone you know develops sudden confusion, you should seek immediate medical help. Sudden confusion could be a sign not only of complications from COVID-19 but also other severe conditions, including stroke.

This past week, researchers in Madrid, Spain, observed tiny round spots in the mouths of COVID-19 patients. These pinpoint round spots called oral petechiae are produced by bleeding blood vessels under the skin.

The patients who showed these lesions also had an external skin rash, which is making dermatologists think this could be a new symptom of COVID-19.

How to Check For COVID-19 Symptoms in Children

Most children experience milder symptoms compared to adults, but some children do develop severe complications from COVID-19. Therefore, you should not underestimate the potential danger to children or wait too long to get medical help when needed.

The main symptoms of the novel coronavirus to for in children are:

  • A high fever. Children will feel hot to the touch in the chest or back areas
  • A new, continuous cough. This means frequently coughing for more than one hour or experiencing more coughing episodes in 24 hours
  • Fatigue. Your child may seem lethargic or weak

When to Seek Medical Help

If you know you’ve been in close contact with someone who has the virus, don’t rush to get tested right away.

The virus takes anywhere from 2 to 14 days to incubate, so if you test too early, you may get a false negative result.

If you think you may have the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, self-isolate in your home. If you live with others, confine yourself to one room or side of your home. Don’t let anyone else use the same plates, utensils, or glasses that you are using to prevent spreading the virus.

Call your doctor if you develop any of the symptoms listed above. If you need to come to our ER, we will be happy to treat you. All we ask is that you call ahead so we can take precautions to protect our staff and other patients.

You should seek immediate medical help if you develop any of these symptoms:

  • Prolonged or severe trouble breathing
  • Persistent pressure or pain in the chest area
  • Inability to stay awake
  • Confusion
  • Blue lips or face

Altus Emergency Centers are available to treat all patients regardless of symptoms.

We provide a free medical evaluation to all patients who visit us. Based on that medical assessment, our doctors will recommend the best treatment options for you and your family.

We are here for all of you if and when you need us!

Altus ER During COVID-19 – Real Patient Testimonies

Visiting Altus ER During COVID-19, What Has it Been Like?

From the beginning, when the COVID-19 virus first appeared, there has been a whirlwind of controversy and many more questions than answers.  The world went through a massive realization that we are all interconnected.  We are not alone as what happens in one part of the world can ultimately affect the whole.  However, it has also been a time of coming together in a tremendous effort to safeguard our families, friends, and the whole of humanity.  Suddenly, unsung heroes began to spring up all over the world, those on the front line, our first-responders and healthcare workers.  Likewise, there have been individuals, organizations, and businesses who also stood up and reached out to help others during these trying times.

How can you tell if an ER is a safe, caring, effective place to go these days?

Since it’s inception, the Altus Health family has strived together through the years, helping to give our surrounding communities access to quality ER care.  Now more than ever before, standing alongside the community has become crucial.  We take a look back from March 2020 to present-day to find out what it has been like for our patients to visit Altus ER During COVID-19.

What we found was eyeopening.  Healthcare workers focus on helping each patient get well during that crucial moment that they come into the ER.  Very rarely do they get to understand the difference that those critical moments made in someone’s life.

Thank you to each and every patient that has trusted in us as a safe ER to come and get care.  We vow to continue to work 24/7/365 days to keep you safe and well!  Today, we share some of the real testimonials of patients visiting Altus ER during COVID-19.

Visiting Altus ER Lake Jackson During COVID-19
Real Patient Testimonials

“The moment I walked in the receptionist greeted me immediately and checked me in. I was taken back to a room as soon as the receptionist finished the check-in process. Dr. Rodriguez came into the exam room to assess me within 5 minutes. He devised a plan quickly which started with an X-ray. X-ray was completed and read within 15-20 min. The nurse and tech who took part in my care were both very kind as well. I feel I was properly diagnosed and given the appropriate medications and instructions. I definitely give them FIVE stars.”  –  Cherie Bates

“I was treated very, very well. I had a boil on the back of neck that turned into a raging staph infection that they called Cellulitis. Within 10 very comfortable hours most of the swelling had gone down and I was feeling much, much better than when I arrived, so they sent me on home. I’d highly recommend them for ANY KIND of urgent Care needs you may have.  i Wednesday scared to Death of being exposed to the Corona, no worries. They keep it very clean.”  –  James Smith

I appreciate all the professionalism that I witnessed. I recommend Altus in Waxahachie. Please note that a bad cough and heavy chest does not always mean Covid-19. A.S.”  –  Anne Sutherland

Group Interactions Impacting COVID-19

How Are Group Interactions Impacting COVID-19

Are group interactions impacting COVID-19 and it’s spread?  As our communities undertake measures to reopen businesses and reactivate our economies, we need to consider how our daily activities impact the success of these efforts.

The first thing we need to come to terms with is the fact that nothing we do will guarantee zero risks of infection. For this reason, it’s important to understand how our daily interactions can put us at risk and which prevention measures can help protect us.

How Does the Virus Spread?

We are still learning a lot from this virus. However, scientists believe SARS-CoV-2, which is the virus that causes COVID-19 spreads from person to person mostly through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks.

These droplets are typically small and not always noticeable. Because of their size, they can readily travel through the air and land in our hands, mouths, or noses where we can accidentally inhale them into our lungs.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

How Can Group Interactions Put You at Risk

In general, the more closely and longer your interaction with others is, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spread.

There are other factors of social interaction that can raise our risk of infection, such as:

  • The more people you interact with, the higher your risk of infection will be
  • Being in a group where people aren’t social distancing or wearing face coverings significantly increases your risk
  • Engaging with people who are not part of your usual social unit (e.g., those that live with you) can also raise your risk of contagion
  • Not everyone who has the virus has symptoms. The closer you are to other individuals who may be infected and not know it, the higher your risk of getting sick
  • Social interaction indoors where it might be harder to keep people apart, and proper ventilation might be an issue, tends to be riskier than group interaction taking place outdoors

Things to Consider Before You Participate in A Group Gathering

Before deciding to rejoin group activities, there are things to consider that can help minimize your risk of infection.

Keep Yourself Informed

Follow updates from local health officials to understand the situation in your community. You can check

Review updates issued by your local health department to know how the virus is spreading in your town. You can search The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention directory to find resources in your community.

Know Your Risk Factors

Everyone experiences the disease differently. Some people who have the virus never develop symptoms; others only experience mild ones, while others might get severely ill.

Certain groups, including older adults and people of any age who have chronic underlying medical conditions, have a higher risk for severe illness and developing complications from COVID-19.

Additionally, you need to consider if someone in your household has an increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19. If you live with older adults or someone how has heart disease, diabetes, or cancer, then you and your family should take extra precautions to minimize risk.

Wash Your Hands, Keep Your Distance, And Wear a Mask

As a rule, you should continue to follow the general prevention guidelines, which include:

  • Washing your hands with soap and water several times a day
  • Maintaining a distance of at least 6-feet between you and others
  • Wearing a moisture-resistant face mask when out in public

At Altus Emergency Centers, we continue to monitor the spread of COVID-19 in our community closely. All our facilities follow strict prevention protocols that exceed those suggested by local and federal healthcare agencies.

Our patient’s safety and welling continue to be our top priority; for this reason, our ER’s remain open to treat all medical emergencies. If you need us, we are here.

Sun Safety During the Pandemic

Practice Sun Safety During the Pandemic

We are fast approaching that time of year where the temperature in Texas reaches the high 90’s, and you feel like you, and everything around is ready to melt.

After weeks of being indoors, many of us are eager to spend time outside. Whether it’s fresh air you seek or an extra dose of the Immunity-supporting vitamin D – Aka “the sunshine vitamin,” staying safe in the sun is the priority.

Safe and Easy Summer Tips

Follow our tips to prevent dehydration, sunburns, and heatstroke and ensure your time outdoors is as memorable and fun as you dreamt it!

Add More Fruits and Veggies to Your Summer Diet

Fruits and vegetables are full of antioxidants that can help boost our immunity as well as protect our skin against sun-damage, premature aging, and skin cancer.

Pro Tip: Snack on refrigerated or frozen fruit or make yourself a refreshing fruit smoothie

Stay Hydrated

During the summer months, our Altus ER Centers get slammed with dehydrated patients. Dehydration is a real concern during the summer months, as it increases the risk of heat exhaustion and, in more severe cases, heatstroke.

Pro Tips to prevent dehydration:

  • Carry a refillable BPA Free water bottle with you when outdoors
  • Follow the 20-minute rule; this means you should drink water every 20 minutes when outdoors.
  • Avoid sugary and alcoholic beverages
  • While engaging in an outdoor sport, we recommend you hydrate with a low sugar sports drink to help replenish lost minerals.

Don’t Forget the Sunscreen

Applying sunscreen should be a daily habit regardless, but it is especially important these days. Remember, we’ve been sheltering indoors due to the pandemic for months, and our skin will need time to adjust to sun exposure again.

Before you go outside, please remember to:

  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Broad-spectrum means ti will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays
  • Apply the sunscreen onto dry skin 15 minutes before going outside
  • For best results, re-apply sunscreen every two hours, or after swimming or sweating profusely.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Protect Your Eyes

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, high levels of exposure to UV light increases your risk of developing certain eye diseases such as, growths on the eye, cataracts cancer, and photokeratitis is a painful eye condition that is like having a sunburned eye

Pro tips to prevent damage to your eyes

  • Wear UV-blocking sunglasses and broad-brimmed hats whenever you are outside, even if the day doesn’t seem to be too sunny
  • Shield your eyes from dust by wearing sunglasses
  • Wear goggles when swimming in the pool to protect your eyes from harsh chemicals
  • Use artificial tears if your eyes become dry
  • Avoid looking directly at the sun
  • Don’t stand too close to lit grills or open fires

Wear Cool Protective Clothing

During your outings, choose lightweight fabrics in light colors, and preferably use loose-fitting clothing. Additionally, wear a wide-brimmed hat that can provide shade to your eyes and keep your head nice and fresh while you are out in the sun.

Maintain Social Distancing, Wear a Mask, and Wash Your Hands

We live in a new reality, one in which we must follow the guidelines of health officials to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

We urge you to please wear a mask when interacting with people outside of your immediate circle. Continue to wash your hands frequently with plenty of soap and water and maintain a social distance of at least 6-feet.

Flattening the curve is everyone’s responsibility.

Altus Emergency Centers continues to work 24/7, providing quality emergency medical services at an affordable price in a safe and friendly environment. If you require medical attention, don’t hesitate to visit us, your wellbeing is our priority.

We Stand with Our Community

We Stand with Our Community

These past few months as a community, we’ve faced some hard times with the spread of COVID-19. The pandemic affected us all in one way or another; our children can’t attend school; many workplaces closed down, and we had to learn about social distancing.

Through this entire ordeal, Altus Emergency Centers has remained open, taking care of our friends and neighbors, and we plan to continue doing so.

That is why we wanted to share with you how we are helping our communities cope with the public health crisis and stay safe and healthy.

Can You Get Tested for COVID-19 At Altus Emergency Centers?

The first thing we wanted to address is our testing capabilities. As of right now, the Department Of State And Health Services (DSHS) does not allow freestanding ERs, such as Altus Emergency Centers, to do outpatient testing.

Therefore, if you come to us with symptoms related to COVID-19, we can examine you as an ER visit and take a sample and send it to an authorized laboratory for testing if the physician deems necessary.

How Altus Emergency Centers Is Helping to Care for the Community

In these uncertain times, we understand how scary it is to deal with a medical emergency, especially if you have symptoms associated with COVID-19.

We want you to know Altus Emergency Centers is here for you, and we will not leave you alone in your time of need.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Free Medical Screenings

All patients who visit our emergency centers receive a free medical screening by one of our physicians. After the evaluation and based on symptoms, the physician will make a medical decision to order or not order a COVID-19 test.

As a patient, you have the right to agree or disagree to be seen by a physician. If you agree, your visit is considered an emergency room visit.  For those with commercial insurance, the CARE Act ensures no out of pocket expenses related to the diagnostic test.  Altus Emergency Centers are required to follow these federal rules.

Partnerships for Non-Emergency Needs

It’s not always easy for us as patients to determine if our symptoms or injury requires emergency attention or not, especially when we are scared.

You don’t have to worry; you can come to any one of our centers and let our medical staff evaluate your situation.

At Altus Emergency Centers, we don’t just take care of your health; we also take care of your wallet. We have partnered with local urgent care and other community facilities to provide more cost-effective options for those interested with a non-emergency need.

Additionally, we also can refer patients without symptoms to our county resources.

We are living in difficult, stressful, and scary times. However, Altus Emergency Centers is proud to be a member of the community. The outpouring of support from the local authorities and neighbors who are organizing to look after each other inspires us every day.

Altus Emergency Centers stands with our communities. We are confident we will get through this by working together and taking care of one another. Stay safe and healthy.

Tips to Reopen Your Business Safely Texas!

Tips to Reopen Your Business Safely Texas

The number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise, sparking a debate of when and how to re-open our economy.  The question on all of our minds is, “How to Reopen Your Business Safely?”

The timeline for reopening is subject to how the pandemic evolves.  Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an executive order halting the state’s plans to ease lockdown restrictions.

The topic of how to safely reopen businesses is creating much anxiety amongst business owners who are left to navigate a new world of social distancing, face coverings, decreased in-store capacity, and stricter cleaning and disinfecting protocols.

To help businesses in our communities reopen safely, we’ve prepared a set of tips to formulate and execute a plan.

The following information will be of great value to business owners to safely resume operations while safeguarding the wellbeing of their staff and clients and regaining the trust and confidence of the public.

Tips to Re-open Your Business Safely

Prepare Your Establishment for the Transition

It’s crucial to stay informed, as local, state, and federal guidelines can change daily for specific industries as the COVID-19 pandemic evolves.

Business owners might need to physically rearrange their stores to comply with the strategies for community mitigation set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

To help mitigate the spread of the virus, owners may have to do one or more of the following:

  • Install physical barriers in their stores or office space
  • Changing the layout to create more space between workstations
  • Close communal spaces
  • Stagger shifts and breaks to minimize any unnecessary interactions
Tips to Re-open Your Business Safely

Create an Employee Wellness and Education Plan

Public health officials encourage business owners to allow employees to work remotely when possible. For those companies that require employees to work on-site, preparing a wellness and education plan is imperative.

First, come up with a sanitation program, all employees must follow when at work. Your wellness program should include the following:

  • Providing personal protection equipment (PPE) or face coverings:  The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires specific industries to use standardized PPE like N95 masks. However, for most businesses providing cloth face coverings will be enough.
  • Temperature checks before commencing work: We can safely expect temperature checks to be a requirement for re-opening businesses, and even if it is not, it’s a good idea to implement it. Designate one person, such as a manager or supervisor, as the recorder to keep better control of the data.
  • Daily wellness checks: Provide your employees with a short daily “symptom survey” to be completed before entering the workplace.

You should schedule a staff training session to cover all aspects of your wellness program and give employees to ask questions before you implement it. Make sure you educate your employees on the proper way to use personal protection equipment (PPE), proper handwashing techniques and require social distancing.

Tips to Re-open Your Business Safely

Safety Measures for Retail Stores

Non-essential retail stores and restaurants need to introduce additional health and safety protocols. These measures are not only a useful, practical public health strategy; they can also help instill confidence in your customers; knowing owners are doing everything they can to keep them safe.

Here are a few tips to minimize person-to-person contact at your place of business:

  • Promote the use of cashless payment methods. Cash touches lots of hands, which can increase the risk of infection. Promoting the use of virtual payment methods or contactless credit/debit cards can help protect your employees and customers.
  • Set up a “pick-up station” at the store entrance. Enable your customers to place an order online and alert them when it’s ready to pick up. This idea will help comply with store capacity guidelines.
  • Install barriers and Delimit Spaces. Delimit spaces to comply with social distancing guidelines. Many people don’t know how far they need to stand apart from others, by setting visual marks for people to stand in line at, you can help guarantee everyone practices safe social distancing.
Tips to Re-open Your Business Safely

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Increase Communication

Customers need to know and understand the new rules of engagement established by stores and offices.

Place signs at the entrance and throughout your workplace. Use a unified message across all channels and repeat it often through regular transaction touchpoints.

Your message should be simple and clear, letting people know what they need to do. If you require your clients to apply hand sanitizer when entering your establishment, then you need to have signs and hand sanitizer readily available. If the use of face coverings is mandatory, the poster needs to be outside the establishment or on the front door.

If possible, have a member of your staff at the door to greet and help people navigate safely through your store.

Provide updates when needed, be ready to accept feedback, and adapt your operations accordingly.

Altus Emergency Centers is here to support business owners in our community. As members of the communities we serve, we are committed to doing everything we can to help kickstart our economy and support local businesses.

Up until now, the model has been to have employers shop around for the best pricing for their employees for their business. Then the employee selects what health benefit is provided through the plan you purchased as a business owner.

We get in this vicious cycle of an uncontrolled expense based off of employee health issues.

Cost continue to rise for the business man because there is no set control on where employees go. This leads to higher deductibles, premiums, payment year after year all because of lack of control.  What if you could shop for cost-effective medical services, which would, in turn, reduce costs?

When it comes to medical emergencies, it is unreasonable to expect anyone to research affordable care.

You cannot expect someone to drive long distances, during an emergency at which time, every second counts.  In these instances, the decision of where to receive care should be based on proximity, convenience, with little to no wait times.  A decision based purely on cost could put their health or even life at risk.

A Viable Solution to Lowering Health Care Costs

A much better option for self-insured employers is to consider sidestepping health insurers and negotiate directly with local health care providers like Altus Emergency Centers

to lock in reasonable pricing for health services.

A direct contract arrangement will allow employers to negotiate bundled case rates with provider organizations, which is a huge benefit for those businesses looking to cut their health care costs, while still guaranteeing quality care for their employees.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

How it Works

When a direct contract is negotiated, a price is arranged for each treatment, diagnostic test, or health service.  This means that the employer will make a single payment to providers and healthcare facilities for all services to treat a specific condition or provide a particular treatment.

Because the middle man was cut out, the providers can lower costs, making it more affordable for self-insured employers.

Benefits of a Direct Contract with Health Services

When you eliminate the middle man, in this case, the insurance company, there are benefits all around.

In a Direct Contract scenario, the course of treatment will be the same, but now at a fixed cost rather than variable.

There wouldn’t be a need to worry about prior authorizations and self-insured employers save money in the long run.

Additionally, employers have more control over employee health benefits.
