American Heart Month – Guide to a Healthy Heart

Today is the Day to Learn to Love Your Heart!

This Valentine’s Month, it’s all about the heart!  Many of us are planning the perfect date night to show our partners just how important they are to us and how much we love them.  Altus Emergency Centers wants you to pause and pay a little more attention to all of the beautiful hearts in your life, starting with your own.

This year we are partnering with the Million Hearts® initiative to bring awareness of how dangerous and devastating heart disease can be, not just on a personal level but for those we love as well.  May this be the February that you learned to love your heart.

Heart Disease Fact Sheet

  • Cardiovascular diseases kill over 800,000 Americans every year
  • Heart Disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases are responsible for 1 in every 3 deaths
  • Heart Disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States

Every 40 Seconds, an American will have a Heart Attack.

  • Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, and it’s responsible for over 370,000 annual deaths
  • Every year more than 735,000 Americans suffer a heart attack
  • According to studies:

Nearly Two-Thirds of women who die suddenly of coronary heart disease have no previous symptoms.

Sources: CDC & Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics 2018

We all glance over numbers every day like these every day.  Instead of a number, see them for what they really are, a mother, father, teacher, co-worker, best friend, classmate, neighbor, grandma, or the person standing right beside you.  At Altus Emergency Centers, we’re committed to helping you not become a statistic.  Chances are, you are still in time to make the lifestyle changes necessary to keep a healthy heart pumping for much longer.

Safeguarding Your Heart

We’ve all had our hearts broken at some point in our lives, but, as hard as heartbreak can be, we know that in time we will get better and be able to love again. This is not always the case when our hearts get sick, some of us won’t have the luxury of time to heal, which is why we need to start taking better care of our hearts now.

You are always taking care of everyone around you, this month of February make a pledge to start showing yourself some love by making healthier lifestyle and food choices including:

Improve Your Diet

Eat healthier, include more fruits and veggies, choose low-fat dairy products and cut down on the amount of fat you eat.

Fill Up on Fiber

Choose foods that are fiber-rich like oats, whole wheat bread, and beans and legumes. Fiber-rich foods will fill you up more, and they take longer for your digestive system to process, so you will fell fool for a longer time. This will help you eat less and maybe lose a few pounds without having to sacrifice your food intake.

Eat More Fish

Texans love meat, we get it, but try substituting beef for fish at least once or twice a week, a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids can help ward off heart disease.

Get Moving!

Just like the song says you’ve got to move it, move it. We know you have a busy schedule but only 30 minutes a day of moderate exercise can make a world of difference. You don’t need to go to the gym, a walk around your neighborhood, or some fun dancing around the house or even putting a little more pep into your housework might do the trick.

Cut Down on The Salt

The American diet has an unusually high amount of salt, and a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that cutting the amount of salt we consume can significantly lower the number of strokes, coronary heart disease (CHD), and heart attacks.

Live Smoke-Free!

Smoking is one of the top risk factors for heart disease, and it’s not enough to decrease the number of cigarettes you smoke per day, you need to stop smoking altogether.

Recognizing a Heart Attack

The possibility of a heart attack is real.  Heart disease is the leading cause of both men and women in the US.  Although medical studies have shown that you can drastically lower your possibility of having a heart attack through lifestyle changes, the odds are still 1 of every 4 people in America die from heart disease.  For this reason, another way to help save hearts is to get to know the signs of a heart attack and to take action.  While men and women will have different types of symptoms and not all chest pains indicate a heart attack, there are some tell-tale signs that should spark an immediate warning sign.

Here are five of the most common signs of a heart attack:

  • Pain or Discomfort in Chest

  • Lightheadedness, Nausea or Vomiting

  • Jaw, Neck or Back Pain

  • Discomfort or Pain in Jaw or Shoulder

  • Shortness of Breath

Time is a major factor, the sooner the better.

The recommended window of time to get treatment for a heart attack is of only two hours away from the first signs as those listed above.  If you risk waiting longer, the damage will be greater as the chances of survival will be lowered.

If you or someone you know experiences any of the symptoms listed here, the best thing you can do is have someone bring you to the nearest Altus Emergency Center so we can evaluate you. When it comes to heart attacks and strokes, the faster you get treatment, the greater your chances of recovery and survival will be.

It’s been said that the greatest gift we can give anyone is love, so this Valentine’s Day make a pledge to take better care of your heart so you can be around for many more years to gift love to your friends and family.

Simple Ways to Prevent Burns and Scalds

Simple Ways to Prevent Burns and Scalds

This year’s Burn Awareness Week theme is Burning Issues in the Kitchen! The purpose of Burn Awareness Week is to raise awareness of the potential dangers of burns accidents at home or the workplace.

How Big is the Problem?

The American Burn Association estimates that close to 486,000 Americans receive treatment for burn-related injuries every year.

  • 3,275 people die every year due to fire and smoke inhalation accidents
  • Burn-related injuries result in 40,000 hospitalizations
  • Scalding is the most common cause of burn injuries in children aged four or younger, accounting for close to 200,000 yearly injuries
  • Close to half of all scalding accidents are due to spilled food or drinks. The other half is the result of scalding tap water or contact with hot objects such as irons, heaters, and stoves
  • An estimated 15,000 children need hospitalization each year for burn-related injuries
  • About 1,100 children die every year from fire and burn injuries

Simple Ways for to You to Prevent Burns and Scalds at Home

Reduce Water Temperature

If you have a water heater at home, check the settings to ensure the water temperature is below 120°F.

The ideal bath water temperature is around 100°F, making sure you always test the water temperature of your shower or bathtub before allowing your child to go in.

Establish No Zones for Your Small Children and Pets

Teach your children to keep a safe distance from the stove, fireplace, grill, space heaters, and radiators.

If you have small children or pets, consider blocking access to the stove and laundry room while cooking or ironing.

Never leave a small child unattended in the kitchen or a room with a fireplace, heater, curling iron, or iron, and always keep these hot devices out of children’s reach.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Test Food Temperature Before Feeding Infants and Small Children

Avoid heating a baby’s bottle in the microwave as the milk might heat unevenly. Additionally, always shake the baby bottle to ensure the contents have an equal temperature and test before feeding your baby.

If you are feeding your young child solid foods, avoid using metal utensils as these can become very hot and scald your child’s mouth.

Avoid Hot Spills

Keep hot drinks and food away from counter or table edges where your child can reach them. Likewise, avoid using tablecloths or placemats that children can pull on and accidentally scald themselves.

When cooking, make sure to position pot handles facing inward towards the rear of the stove. Use the back burners when possible to prevent someone accidentally bumping into it and spilling hot contents.

Avoid cooking, drinking, or carrying hot foods or beverages while holding a child in your arms.

When to Go to The ER

First-degree burns typically don’t require medical attention. However, if you notice blistering and the injury is painful, this is a sign of a deeper burn, most likely second-degree. Third and fourth-degree burns are severe burns, and often the victim doesn’t experience much pain because the burn has damaged the nerves.

If you think you or a loved one suffered third-degree burns, call 911 immediately. Failing to get prompt medical assistance can result in complications including infections, dehydration, nerve damage, shock, and sepsis, a life-threatening condition.

You should rush to the ER if:
  • The burn is on your face
  • The size of the burn is larger than three inches
  • The burn is a result of an electrical shock
  • The pain is progressively getting worse
  • You develop a fever
  • Your injury has a foul smell, or if there is pus oozing from it

How to Keep Young Children Safe from Omicron

How to Keep Young Children Safe from Omicron

Waves of COVID-19 continue to batter the country leaving parents with small children wondering how best to keep their kids safe.

The coronavirus continues to mutate; the current dominant variant is called Omicron. Although it produces milder illness in many cases, it is still straining hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Additionally, Omicron is affecting children more than previous variants.

According to COVID-NET, the hospitalization rate for the week ending on Jan 22 for children aged 0-4 who are still not eligible for the vaccine was 7.1 per 100,000. While the rate for children aged 5-17 was 2.2 per 100,000. Even though these numbers are higher than those seen in past months, the good news is that data shows the hospitalization rate going down.

However, new variants continue to appear; this week, scientists said they were studying a new sub-variant of Omicron detected in various states known as BA. 2.

We still don’t know much about BA. 2, including whether it causes more severe symptoms and spreads faster than other variants or which population is most at risk. Therefore, as parents, we must continue to protect our children.

The increase in pediatric Omicron illnesses and hospitalizations is naturally a source of anxiety if you are a parent. Still, there are ways to help reduce your child’s risk of infection. Here are a few ways you can help keep your children safe from Omicron.

Get Vaccinated

If you have children under the age of 5, one way to help keep them safe is to make sure that all adults and children age five and up in the family are fully vaccinated.

Check Your Children’s Risk Factors

Your family is unique, and therefore the risk factors for your children can be different. However, here are some considerations for you to take into account:

  • Are any of your children immunocompromised, or do they have any illnesses that could increase their risk for severe COVID-19 disease?
  • Are your children under the age of five and therefore not eligible for the vaccine?
  • Are your kids attending in-person classes at school, or do they go to daycare?

Keep in mind that the more contact your children have with people outside of your family, the greater their chances of catching a virus, be it the flu or the coronavirus

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Speak to Your Children

It’s not always easy to explain to small children what is happening, especially when safety guidelines are changing all the time.

But children are fast learners, and they have an enormous capacity to adapt, so don’t underestimate them.

There are several children’s books that can help you approach the subject and make it easier for your kids to understand what is going on.

You can download some of these books for free from The American Psychological Association (APA) website. To check them out, click here.

Continue to Follow All Safety Measures

Teach your children the importance of washing their hands and why they should never touch their faces or eat with dirty hands.

It’s also a good idea to teach them not to share eating utensils or drink out of other children’s glasses. This habit can keep them safe from many illnesses, not just COVID-19.

Buy them size-appropriate masks to wear when safe social distancing is not possible.

American Red Cross Blood Crisis – How to Help Save Lives

American Red Cross Blood Crisis – How to Help Save Lives

A few days ago, the American Red Cross announced it was facing its worst blood shortage in over a decade. The drop in donations led the organization to declare its first-ever blood crisis in our country.

Blood is needed to save the lives of thousands of patients each year. Unfortunately, blood donor turnout has declined in the last couple of years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Red Cross reported a 10% reduction in overall donors since the pandemic started.

In addition, the recent surge due to Omicron created even more staffing and donor challenges, with many medical professionals and donors falling ill. These additional challenges mean many blood drives had to be canceled, causing further shortages.

Why Blood Donations Matter

Blood is needed to treat and save the lives of thousands of patients every year. Unfortunately, with the current shortage, it means doctors in hospitals and Emergency Rooms across the nation must make tough decisions. Doctors now have to decide who receives a blood transfusion now and who will have to wait until more blood becomes available. Still, for many patients, the blood may not arrive in time.

Doctors can sometimes hold off the need for a blood transfusion, but it’s a matter of life and death in other cases. Hospitals and emergency rooms have difficulty treating accident victims, patients with blood disorders like sickle cell disease, cancer patients, and critically ill patients because of the shortage.

That is why the Red Cross needs our help in increasing the number of donors. Remember, labs can’t manufacture blood and platelets; the blood available to hospitals and ER’s all comes from donors.

Blood Transfusion Statistics in America

According to the American Red Cross, this is how much blood transfusions and donations are needed:

  • Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. requires blood and or platelets
  • One donation can help save up to three lives
  • Every day patients in the U.S. need approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells
  • The average red blood cell transfusion is around three units
  • Nearly 5,000 units of platelets and 6.500 units of plasma are needed daily
  • About 16 million blood components are transfused each year in America
  • Between 90,000 and 100,000 Americans have sickle cell disease, and close to 1,000 babies are born with the illness every year. Many sickle cell patients require blood transfusions throughout their lives
  • One car crash victim may need as many as 100 units of blood
  • The blood type most often requested by hospitals is Type O

Although Type 0 blood is the most in-demand, donations from all other blood types are just as welcomed.

How You Can Help End the Blood Crisis in America

Altus Emergency Centers is joining efforts with the American Red Cross to promote more blood drives in our communities and help end the blood crisis.

Please join us at the Altus location nearest to you to donate blood. Your act of generosity could be the life-saving miracle a family is praying for.
