Sports Injuries

Sports-Injuries Urgent care
Sports Injuries are not exclusive to athletes. They can range from mild to severe and can happen to everyone.

Every year more people are trying to improve their health and quality of life, for this reason, they are regularly engaging in some sort of sport, hitting the gym, or are involved in other physical activities such as dancing.

An unfortunate side-effect of this has been the increase in visits to the emergency room due to sports-related injuries. Because of this, sports medicine professionals and quality diagnostic machines have become invaluable in all our emergency centers.

There are many possible causes of a sports-related injury, accidents happen all the time, however, the most common causes of sports injuries include:

  • Poor training practices.
  • Inadequate warming and/or stretching before and after physical activity.
  • Not using the appropriate gear (footwear, safety equipment) for the activity.
  • Overtraining.

Types of Sports Injuries

Like with most injuries those related to sports can be classified as acute or chronic.

  • Acute Traumatic Sports Injuries: These are a result of direct trauma such as a fall or blow. The most common injuries are strains, sprains, fractures, concussions, and lacerations (cuts)
  • Chronic Sports Injuries: Also known as overuse injuries, these occur over time usually from repetitive training. These include tendonitis and stress fractures.

Most visits to our emergency centers are due to acute traumatic sports injuries, chronic injuries usually have milder symptoms and tend to be ignored by the patient. But, we are fully equipped to diagnose and treat either type of sports related injuries.

These are the most common sports injuries treated at our centers

Some sports-related injuries will not require a visit to the ER, however, if you or someone you know experiences any of these symptoms after playing a sport seek immediate medical attention:

  • Loss of consciousness.
  • Dizziness.
  • Confusion.
  • Severe back pain.
  • Nausea and or vomiting.

Diagnosing Sports Injuries

Some injuries are easier to diagnose than others, injuries which result in visible swelling, bleeding, and some fractures are easy to see, however, internal injuries such as internal bleeding, and concussions require the use of diagnostic machines.

For this reason, all our centers are equipped with the following:

  • Ultrasound.
  • CT Scanner.
  • X-Ray.

These are all non-invasive diagnostic tests that provide our emergency medical staff with accurate, fast and detailed information pertaining to the injured area, facilitating the correct diagnosis and best course of treatment for each patient.
