We have excellent news for newly diagnosed COVID-19 patients. Altus Emergency Centers is now authorized to provide a new, highly effective treatment to qualifying patients that can significantly reduce the risk of developing severe illness.
Bamlanivimab/Etesevimab or BAM/ETE is an FDA-authorized monoclonal neutralizing antibody treatment for COVID-19.
About BAM/ETE, What it Means to You.
What Is Bamlanivimab/Etesevimab?
Bamlanivimab/Etesevimab (Lilly) Monoclonal Antibody Therapeutic Cocktail is an FDA-authorized monoclonal antibody therapy for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in adult and pediatric patients.
How Does BAM/ETE therapy work?
BAM/ETE is what is known as a neutralizing antibody medication.
When infected with a virus such as SARS-CoV2, which causes COVID-19, our immune system reacts by creating antibodies to fight it off. However, it takes time for our immune system to make antibodies, and in the meantime, we could get gravely sick.
Bamlanivimab/Etesevimab contains man-made antibodies that are very similar to the antibodies of recovered COVID-19 patients. By injecting these antibodies, which help limit the amount of virus in our body, we can give our immune system a head start and allow it sufficient time to create our own antibodies.
It’s important to know that BAM does not have any COVID-19 virus in it. The therapy is delivered intravenously via hour-long infusions.
Who Qualifies for This New Antibody Therapy?
BAM is not for everyone.
The FDA only authorized the drug for use in non-hospitalized high-risk COVID-19 positive adults and adolescents
Patients must be 12 years of age, or older and patients must weigh at least 88 pounds. The list of potential qualifying individuals includes those 65 years of age and older and patients with certain chronic medical conditions.
While not all patients will qualify for the treatment, doctors at Altus Emergency Centers and Lumberton Hospital will provide a medical screening for any COVID-19 patient.
If our doctors determine you are a candidate for BAM therapy, then they will issue the therapeutic and administer it while being a patient in our facility.
This therapeutic medication is for our patients receiving emergency services. When a patient comes into our facility for a COVID-19 emergency, they will have the opportunity to receive Bamlanivimab/Etesevimab if they meet the criteria.
