How to Survive the “April Showers” of Texas

Ah, the joys of spring! We get to enjoy longer warmer days, fresh air, blooming fields, and allergies.

That’s right folks, at Altus Emergency Centers we are getting ready for allergy season. If you’re one of the millions of Americans who experience seasonal allergies, so should you!

learn how to survive spring allergies in Texas

What Causes Spring Allergies

Allergens, those pesky little airborne particles are the ones responsible for sending our immune systems into overdrive causing one or more of the following symptoms: sneezing, a stuffy or a runny nose, watery eyes, coughing and itchy eyes and nose.

The most common allergens this time of year are:

  • – Pollen
  • – Mold Spores
  • – Dust
pollen is the biggest cause of spring allergies

Pollen is by far the biggest spring allergy trigger. It gets wisped into the air by blooming flowers, trees, grasses, and weeds.  Most noteworthy in Spring, these tiny grains get released into the air as part of their pollination process.

This is an entirely natural and beautiful process necessary for the renewal of nature.  Unfortunately, for the countless Americans who suffer from allergies, spring can be a complete torture.  But do you really understand why? First, their immune system mistakenly sees pollen as a dangerous substance. Next, it overreacts by releasing antibodies to combat it.  As a result, you experience those terrible annoying allergy symptoms.

Preventing or Minimizing Your Spring Allergies

Although there are countless medications that can control the symptoms of seasonal allergies, it is always best to avoid getting them in the first place.

spring allergy preparation tips Altus ER Centers Texas
  • – Get a Head Start: If you already know you have spring allergies, then the best thing you can do is to start taking your allergy medication before you show any symptoms. Taking a daily antihistamine or applying nasal spray can reduce the symptoms.
  • – Keep an Eye on Your Local Pollen Count: The level of pollen in the air is higher during breezy days when the wind picks up these microscopic grains, during rainy days the allergens are practically washed away. You can check the pollen count in your area by entering your zip code here.
  • – Avoid the Outdoors: We know this is not the best way to spend these beautiful spring days, but, limiting your time outdoors will help prevent or at least reduce the severity of your allergy symptoms.
  • – Use Your Air Conditioner: Close the windows of your home, office, and car and turn on your air conditioner unit.  You should make sure the filters are cleaned on a regular basis to avoid dust, and mold from accumulating in the vents and filters.
  • – Shower After Any Outdoor Activity: Spring is a lovely time to renew your garden and play outside with your kids. If you know you will be spending time outdoors make sure to take your antihistamine medication before you leave your home, and shower upon returning. Pollen is sticky, and it can cling to your skin, hair, and clothing and then transfer to your couch and rugs where it can continue to cause allergic reactions.
  • – Determine Your Allergy Profile: Pollen from different trees, flowers, grasses, and weeds affect everyone differently, you should make an appointment with an allergy specialist to determine which types of pollen affect you most.

Know When You Need to Visit the ER

For most allergy sufferers spring allergies pose nothing more than annoying symptoms that are usually controlled with some over the counter medications, however, sometimes your antihistamine may not be enough to control them.

severe spring allergy symptoms

Anytime you experience severe and sudden symptoms especially those that make breathing difficult you should seek immediate emergency medical attention.

You could be experiencing anaphylaxis, a type of allergic reaction that is rapid, severe, and could become life-threatening.

  • – Rashes or hives anywhere on the body
  • – Inability to breathe well or at all
  • – A sense of impending doom
  • – Swelling of throat and mouth
  • – Difficulty in swallowing or speaking
  • – Severe asthma
  • – A sudden feeling of weakness (low blood pressure)
  • – Collapse and unconsciousness

Altus Emergency Centers are equipped with the necessary medications, equipment, and qualified staff to control any type of allergic reaction. There is no time to lose waiting in line during this or any type of emergency.  We are open 24/7 with no lines.

Youth Sports Safety – Keep Your Kids Injury Free

Youth Sports Safety Tips

Helpful Tips to Keep Your Kids Injury Free

It’s National Youth Sports Safety Month!  The love of sports runs deep in every Texan. Our kids are eager to participate in all kinds of sports, from little league, football, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, and anything else you can think of.

There is an underside to this passion for sports though, and it lies in the intensity of the workouts and the pressure to always be better, faster, stronger. Sports is a great way to build character, learn about responsibility, discipline, and teamwork. However, without the proper supervision and training, playing sports could result in a minor or major sports injury.  As our athletes start young, youth sports safety is crucial to keep your children or teens injury free.

At Altus ER we often see kids who have been injured while playing a sport, clearly, some injuries are accidental, others, however, could be easily prevented or minimized with proper supervision. In honor of National Youth Sports Safety Month, we would like to share some helpful prevention tips.

Youth Sports Safety - Keep Your Kids Injury Free

Most Common Youth Sports Injuries

Most of the youth sport injuries occur during practice rather than games, but, they could happen at any time, it is important for parents and coaches to know that any sport injury should be treated correctly to prevent further problems, if your child is experiencing pain, or if you notice swelling, lack of mobility, disorientation, or bleeding bring them in to the nearest Altus Emergency Center for evaluation.

Youth Sports Safety - Keep Your Kids Injury Free

Some of the most common sports injuries in children include:

  • – Joint Dislocations
  • – Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Tear
  • – Concussions
  • – Fractures and Sprains
  • – Meniscus Tear
  • – Rotator Cuff Tendonitis
  • – Dehydration

Prevention Tips

Injuries happen but we can do our best to prevent them.

Youth Sports Safety - Keep Your Kids Injury Free
  • Rest: It is never a good idea to let your kids over exercise.  The body needs time to recover and heal itself.  Make sure your kids rest at least 1 day a week, and they should also take a minimum of 1 month off per year from training for any given sport. It is also helpful to limit the number of teams or leagues your child plays in, this will reduce the risk of injury due to overuse.
  • Invest in Proper Gear: We understand that sports gear can be expensive, but, the proper gear can go a long way in preventing sports injuries. Young athletes should wear appropriate and properly fitting protective equipment including pads, helmets, mouthpieces, face guards, eyewear, and shoes.
  • Strength and Flexibility: Conditioning the body to withstand the intense workouts is one of the best prevention methods. Coaches should incorporate conditioning exercises during practice to help strengthen muscles and stretching exercises should be performed before and after practice or a game.
  • Proper Techniques: It is easy for kids to develop bad habits when exercising.  It’s the coach’s responsibility to ensure that every child is taught the proper techniques and reinforce it throughout the season.
  • Don’t Play the Hero: Young athletes are driven and passionate, and they sometimes have a tendency of thinking they are invincible. Many injuries are made worse because athletes try to play through the pain. This should never be done.  Coaches should remove the injured kids from the game or practice and a pediatric emergency physician should evaluate the injury before the child can resume their training.
  • Hydrate: Children have a hard time identifying the signs of dehydration. Always make sure that they drink plenty of fluids before, during and after exercise or play.
  • Only Play In Adequate Conditions: Children should not practice any sports if there are obstacles on the playing field.  Please avoid areas with exposed sprinklers. Also, avoid playing fields that are overgrown or full of garbage and/or debris.

Know Where to Go In the Event of an Injury

At Altus Emergency Centers we admire the passion and drive that young athletes demonstrate each time they suit up for practice or a game. Our emergency trained physicians are committed to restoring their health if ever they should become injured.

Poison Prevention – Everyday Items Can Kill You

Poison Prevention Awareness

This week we observe the National Poison Prevention Week, household poisons have been a part of our lives for a long time, they are mostly present in cleaning solutions, insecticides, weed killers and carbon monoxide, but, did you know that medications can also poison you?

Poison Control Centers get 1 Call Every 12 Seconds.

This week Altus ER would shine some light on this very real threat to our communities, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC), poison is the leading cause of injury death in the United States, and in their latest report published in November of last year, it was revealed that someone calls in to one of their 55 poison control centers every 12 seconds.

Life-Saving Poison Prevention Tips

Preventing poison-related injuries is the most important thing you can do to help keep your family, friends, and coworkers safe. Because there are many substances that could potentially be poisonous, we will divide these into the most common ones and offer you helpful tips.

poison prevention - don't self medicate

Drugs and Medications

  • – Don’t self-medicate, you should only take prescription medications that have been prescribed by a healthcare professional.
  • – Only take the recommended dose, increasing the amount or frequency with which you take your medication can lead to serious health problems and even death.
  • – Never share your prescription medication, make sure to keep all your prescription and over the counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements in a safe place where only you or the persons taking them can access them.
  • – Don’t mix your medication with alcohol as this could have long-term negative side effects.
  • – Don’t take medications that are expired as these could have turned toxic.
poison prevention - dangers of household chemicals carbon monoxide

Household Chemicals and Carbon Monoxide

  • – Always read the labels before using a product that could be poisonous such as insecticides, cleaners, and detergents.
  • – Keep all chemical products in their original containers, don’t use any type of food containers such as bottles, jars, or cups to store chemicals, cleaners, or beauty products as children and elderly people could mistakenly come into contact with them.
  • – Never mix household cleaning products together, as an example mixing products containing bleach with those containing ammonia could result in toxic fumes.
  • – Wear protective gear such as gloves, and masks when spraying pesticides or other chemicals.
  • – Make sure the rooms are well ventilated when using household cleaners or chemicals.
  • – Install safety locks on cabinets where you store household cleaners, detergents, or pesticides and other chemicals.
  • – Never leave poisonous products unattended while in use.
  • – Have your heating system, water heater, and any gas, oil, or coal burning appliances serviced by a certified technician at least once a year.
  • – Install battery-operated CO detectors in your home, and make sure to replace the batteries periodically.

When to Go to the Emergency Room

If you suspect you or a loved one has come in contact with a poisonous substance, but they are stable, the first thing you should do is call the National Too-Free Poison Help Hotline 1-800-222-1222, this is a nationwide 24/7 service.

You should come to the nearest Altus Emergency Center if any of the following symptoms arise:

  • – Bluish Lips
  • – Difficulty Breathing
  • – Dizziness
  • – Vomiting
  • – Double Vision
  • – Drowsiness
  • – Heart Palpitations
  • – Loss of Consciousness
  • – Muscle Twitching
  • – Seizures
  • – Loss of Bladder Control
  • – Skin Rash or Burns

All our centers are equipped to handle emergency poison situations, therefore if the any of the above symptoms begin to manifest do not delay, rush to the nearest Altus ER center for immediate medical attention.  This could save a life and possibly prevent any life-long side effects.  Help us spread this poison prevention information!  Together, we can help save lives.

National Kidney Month – Kidney Health

Show Your Kidneys Some Love!

Your kidneys are so important, they have a whole month dedicated to them; you guessed it, March is National Kidney Month.

Altus Emergency Center doctors, nurses and admin staff will be working hard this month to raise awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle for proper kidney health. The following are ways to protect yourself from developing chronic kidney disease and other kidney related disorders like kidney stones.

Why are Kidneys So Important?

When thinking of the function of our kidneys we can compare them to our body’s natural chemical plant, they are responsible for:

  • Regulating Fluid Levels
  • Activating Vitamin D which helps keep bones strong
  • They filter waste out of 200 liters of blood every day
  • They release hormones that help regulate blood pressure
  • They control the production of red blood cells

They keep blood minerals (sodium, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and acid content) balanced.

What Happens When Your Kidneys Don’t Function Well?

As you can see from the list above, the kidneys stay pretty busy, so when they suffer damage it inevitably affects other organs, these are some of the problems kidney disease can cause:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Heart Attack
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Stroke
  • Nerve Damage
  • Anemia
  • Weak Bones
  • Kidney Failure

Kidney Health Statistics in the US: Are You at Risk of Developing Kidney Disease?

Did you know that 1 in 3 adults in the US has a high risk of developing kidney disease?

What’s worse 1 in 9 American adults already has kidney disease yet most don’t even know it.

These are some of the leading causes or risk factors for chronic kidney disease:

  • Diabetes
  • A Family History of Kidney Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Being over 60

Other risk factors include:

  • Unhealthy lifestyle
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol Abuse

Kidney Disease Treated in the ER

The most common kidney disease treated in the emergency room is kidney stones which can be extremely painful.

It is estimated that 13% of men and 7% of women in the United States will develop kidney stones at some point in their lives.

To make matters worse, the likelihood of reoccurrence has been estimated to be as high as 50% within 5 years from the first occurrence.

What Causes Kidney Stones?

One of the most common kidney health problems is kidney stones. Kidney stones are nothing more than crystalized calcium deposits, sometimes they contain uric acid or amino acids, they start as small specks, but they can quickly bind and become larger.

Kidney stones can be caused by many factors including:

  • Gout (high levels of uric acid)
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Obesity
  • Dehydration
  • High Protein Diet
  • Prolonged Exposure to a Hot Climate or High Altitude
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Family History of Kidney Stones
  • Being Inactive for an Extended Period of Time

Kidney Stone Symptoms

Most patients that visit our centers who are diagnosed with kidney stones show one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Severe Flank and Lower Back Pain (This may radiate down to the groin area)
  • Presence of Blood in Their Urine (Hematuria)
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Heavy Sweating
  • Difficulty Urinating

Kidney Stone Diagnosis and Treatments in the ER

Although your symptoms may indicate you have a kidney stone, doctors will require additional tests like x-rays, ultrasounds and in some cases a CT Scan, this will help them determine the size and location of the stone which will then dictate the proper medical treatment.

Kidney stone treatments will vary depending on the severity, size, and location of the stone, small stones will often pass through the urine on their own, and these are usually treated with pain medication and observation. Larger stones or those which have caused other side effects such as infection or kidney failure may require surgery.

Preventing Kidney Disease

If you know you have a higher risk than normal of developing kidney disease the best thing to do is to try and prevent it, in order to do this, should get checked regularly, have a urine test and blood test done at least once a year.

Your kidneys work hard every day, show them love by drinking plenty of fluids, eating a healthy balanced diet, exercise regularly, don’t smoke or abuse alcohol.

Cheerleading Safety Month – Cheer Safe!

National Cheerleading Safety Month

Cheering for Safety

Give us an S, an A, an F, E, T, Y!  What do we have? SAFETY! Why are we cheering? Because March is Cheerleading Safety Month, and as always, the staff at Altus Emergency Centers is cheering for your child’s safety.

Cheerleading has come a long way since it’s early days, and it is now a highly competitive and demanding sport, and like with any other sport, cheerleaders are susceptible to sports injuries. There has been a lot of debate regarding the number of injuries sustained by cheerleaders, some claim it is on the rise while others feel critical injuries have diminished in recent years thanks to new safety rules applied to the sport.

ER Treatments for Cheerleading Injuries Altus ER Centers Lumberton Texas

Common Cheerleading Injuries

Both are correct, thankfully catastrophic cheerleading injuries have declined considerably during the last decade, however, the number of cheerleader emergency room visits for non-catastrophic injuries has increased, these injuries include:

• Ankle Sprains

• Knee Injuries

• Wrist Injuries

• Shoulder Injuries

• Lower Back Pain, and Concussions

Altus ER Tips to Cheer Safe!

School cheerleading programs must have a certified cheerleading coach managing the program, and there are safety guidelines that must be followed to ensure the wellbeing of the athletes, these include:

Using the Right Equipment

The use of landing mats is not currently mandatory either during practice sessions or performances, but these are recommended.

Most cheerleading-related injuries occur during practice especially when learning new maneuvers, it is advisable to always practice using 4-inch landing mats to avoid serious injuries.

Footgear is an important factor in injury prevention, cheerleaders should wear properly fitting rubber-soled shoes with adequate cushioning and ankle support. Additionally, flyers should consider wearing a cheering vest during practice to protect themselves from bruising and injury.

Choose a Safe Place to Practice

Back in the day when cheerleading was mostly about waving pom-poms and chanting, it was safe to practice out in the open. Because cheerleading now involves advanced acrobatics and gymnastics, practice spaces should be chosen carefully. Never practice on wet or uneven surfaces like grass or turf, instead look for smooth, level, and dry places to practice in which are clear of obstacles that may cause injury.

Stay in Shape

Cheerleading requires a great deal of strength and balance, and therefore athletes should take great care of their fitness all year-round.

Like with any sport it is important not to overdo it, cheerleaders should take time to rest between training sessions to avoid overuse injuries.

Given that cheerleading now requires gymnastic skills, it is not a bad idea to enroll your child in a gymnastics program, this will serve to improve the child’s skills, and confidence which will help prevent injuries.

Cheering for You Altus ER Centers

Stretch, Warm Up, and Cool Down

We cannot stress how important warming exercises and proper stretching techniques are, these have been proven to reduce muscle strain and prevent injuries, however, cool down exercises and after workout stretching exercises are just as important in injury prevention.

Follow Stunt Progression

The saying you need to learn to crawl before you learn to walk applies to everything in life, especially advanced gymnastic sports. Coaches need to ensure cheerleaders learn the basic skills before introducing more advanced movements and stunts.

Altus Emergency Cares About Cheerleading Safety

At Altus Emergency Centers, we applaud the level of commitment and skill being a cheerleader requires, we encourage students to challenge themselves, improve their skills and push themselves to do things they never thought were possible, but, we urge, parents, coaches, and athletes alike to always put safety first.

Blood Donations & Their Life Saving Powers

The Life Saving Powers of Blood Donations

The Importance of Blood

Blood is the sustenance of life, without adequate amounts of it flowing through our bodies, we would die.

Our bodies depend on a stable supply of oxygen and nutrients to sustain the billions of cells that make it up, no organ can survive without oxygen and nutrients which are transported throughout the body by our blood. But, blood also cleanses our bodies, it carries carbon dioxide and other waste materials to the lungs, kidneys, and intestines so they can be discharged from the body.

Blood helps regulate our body temperature, it also aids in fighting infections, it nurtures every cell and transports all waste materials, keeping us healthy.

How Many Donations Are Needed?

Every two seconds someone needs a blood transfusion and about 43,000 pints of donated blood are used every day in hospitals and emergency rooms across the country. Yet out of the 37% of eligible blood donors in the United States, only 10% donate yearly.

Donors are usually asked to give 1 pint of blood, and this single pint could save up to three lives. Today is a perfect day to become someone’s hero, by donating blood you could save someone’s father or mother, you could save a teacher or a police officer, your blood can save a child’s life.

Who Needs Your Blood?

When you donate blood, this is who you are helping:

  • 30% of blood recipients are cancer patients
  • 15% of blood recipients are suffering from heart disease
  • 15% of blood recipients are patients with bowel and stomach illnesses
  • 12% of blood recipients are burn victims
  • 12% of blood recipients have been involved in an accident
  • 6% of blood recipients are liver and kidney patients
  • 5% of blood recipients are pregnant women and babies
  • 5% of blood recipients are hemophiliacs

100% of blood recipients are someone’s loved one.

 Who can Donate Blood?

Any healthy individual over the age of 16 who weighs at least 110 lbs. can donate blood. Donors are usually asked to give 1 pint and they can donate that amount every 2 months.

What Are the Benefits of Donating Blood?

Aside from becoming a superhero who saves lives, donating blood has some surprising benefits for donors:

It May Improve Blood Flow

Sometimes our blood becomes “thick” due to high viscosity hampering its flow through our veins and arteries, this can damage the lining of the blood vessels and eventually lead to serious cardiovascular problems.

A study conducted by the American Journal of Epidemiology found that blood donors are 88% less likely to suffer from heart attacks, strokes, and cancers.

Your Iron Levels Will Stay Balanced

Healthy adults have approximately 5 grams of iron in their bodies. Iron is an essential mineral that aids in the production of red cells which are responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body.

When you donate blood, you lose roughly half a gram of iron which will get replenished from the food you consume in the days after donating. Regulating iron levels is a good thing because too much iron can damage the blood vessels while a deficiency in iron can cause anemia.

You Get a Free Mini-Checkup

Prior to donating blood, you will receive a physical exam that measures your pulse, blood pressure, and hemoglobin levels. Once you have donated a sample of your blood will be sent to the lab where it will undergo 13 different tests for infectious diseases, like HIV and West Nile Virus. If any of these tests come back positive you will be notified immediately.

This mini-checkup is free for donors and while it is not a substitute for your annual medical checkup it can help monitor your overall health.

You May Live Longer

A study published in Health Psychology found that people who volunteered for altruist purposes tend love live up to 4 years longer than those who do not volunteer to help others.

What You Need to Know About Measles

What You Need to Know to Protect Yourself from the Measles

Six cases of measles have been confirmed so far in Ellis County South of Dallas, one such case involves an individual in Waxahachie. This patient reportedly went to the movies on January 9th at the Showbiz Cinemas in Waxahachie, health officials’ advice that anyone who attended the same cinema on or around that date monitor themselves for measles symptoms until the end of the month.

The number of confirmed cases represents a significant increase compared to 2017 where only one confirmed case of measles was reported. Because of this, the Texas Department of State Health Services issued a measles outbreak advisory on Tuesday of last week.

Altus Emergency Centers joins the Texas Health and Human Services efforts to educate the community in how to recognize the signs of this serious illness that is the leading cause of death for children under the age of 5 according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

About-the-Measles-Virus-Altus-ER-Centers-Texas

What is Measles?

Measles is a viral infection of the respiratory system because the virus can be transmitted by infected individuals when they sneeze or cough, this type of infection is highly contagious.

How is Measles Contracted

An infected patient can release the virus into the air by sneezing or coughing, the virus can survive on surfaces for several hours, therefore even if an individual was not present when the infected patient sneezed or coughed they can still become infected by touching an infected surface.

Drinking from the same glass or sharing eating utensils with an infected patient increased the risk of contagion.

Infected individuals are contagious from 4 days before the onset of the skin rash and up to 4 days after the appearance of the rash.

Keep a Lookout for Measles Symptoms

How-to-Recognize-Measles-Symptoms-Altus-ER-Centers-Texas

Symptoms of Measles

The incubation time for the virus is 14 days on average, although symptoms may manifest within 7-21 days.

Symptoms include:

  • Cough

  • Fever over 101°F

  • Red eyes

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Muscle aches

  • Runny nose

  • Sore throat

  • White spots inside the mouth

The skin rash is the most easily recognizable symptom of measles, the rash is widespread and appears as red itchy bumps, it usually starts in the head and slowly spreads to other parts of the body. The skin rash usually develops within 3-5 days of having been exposed to the virus and can last for up to 7 days.

How to Treat Measles

There is no specific medication for the treatment of measles, symptoms usually disappear within two or three weeks, and doctors may prescribe the following course of treatment:

  • An over the counter pain medication usually containing acetaminophen like Tylenol, this will help relieve the patient’s fever and muscle aches.

  • Plenty of bed rest, this will help boost the immune system

  • Drink plenty of liquids, at least 6-8 glasses of water per day

  • Take a vitamin A supplement

  • Use a humidifier to help ease the patient’s cough and sore throat

Preventing Measles

Vaccination is the best way to prevent measles, the MMR vaccine is a 3 in1 vaccine that will protect children and adults from measles, mumps, and rubella or German measles.

Individuals who have not been vaccinated and come in contact with an infected patient may receive the vaccine within 72 hours to prevent infection.

The infection can also be prevented by taking a dose of immunoglobulin (blood serum containing antibodies) within 6 days of contact with an infected person.

Dangers of Extreme Weight Loss Routines

Dangers of Extreme Weight Loss Routines

ER Doctors Recommend:

Stay Away from Extreme Weight Loss Routines

The beginning of the year is great time to set goals for ourselves, and losing a few pounds, getting more exercise, and improving our fitness level is a wonderful way to start the year, not to mention these goals and easily achievable, but, in our eagerness to get in shape we might end up taking things a little too far.  Avoid any type of extreme weight loss routines.

When our focus lies only on the result, we are more likely to make bad choices, instead, we should be focused on planning the best route to achieve our goals, this way we will avoid making common diet and fitness mistakes that can end up harming our health.

Eating Healthy vs. Dangerous Diets

The Dangers of Extreme Dieting

Anyone who is carrying a few extra pounds dreams of a quick, easy effortless solution to losing their muffin top or love handles, a pill that burns all the fat in a matter of days, a shake that will make us drop a couple of dress sizes in a week, unfortunately, those products are not only ineffective, they can be extremely dangerous, as are fad diets.

Extreme dieting is a very unhealthy way to diet, most fad diets center around cutting back on calories, they do this not taking into account the type or quality of the calories consumed, what they do is limit the amount of food a person ingests to a point where it can border on starvation. This is the reason most fad diets usually don’t last more than 2 weeks, in addition, the body’s response to starvation actually slows down the metabolism, making it harder to lose fat.  Extreme weight loss dieting is dangerous.

Extreme weight loss dieting can have serious health consequences including:

  • Fatigue

  • Gallbladder Disease

  • Muscle Atrophy

  • Malnutrition

  • Constipation

  • Acidosis

  • Rashes

  • And worst of all the regain of any weight loss achieved

Extreme dieting can also have negative effects on our psychological well-being, causing:

  • Irritability

  • Depression

  • Reduced Sex Drive

  • And an increased risk of developing eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia.

Exercising Safely vs. Reckless Workouts

The Dangers of Extreme Weight Loss Exercising

Being motivated to get fit and adopt an exercise regime is great, we can all benefit from some physical activity, but extreme exercising is not something any of us should contemplate. We have been bombarded by reality TV shows where contestant’s workout 8-10 hours a day, this is not only unrealistic, it’s not healthy.

Exercising too much can have the following negative side effects:

  • Severe wear and tear of muscles and joints

  • Dehydration

  • Increased risk of injury

  • Electrolyte imbalance

  • Rhabdomyolysis, a rare condition that occurs when muscle fibers break down and enter the bloodstream, these fibers called myoglobin circulate through the body and cause severe damage to the kidneys, this condition can be fatal.

How Much Exercise is Safe?

The American College of Sports Medicine and American Heart Association recommend healthy adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week, this can be achieved with 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise 5 times a week or 20 minutes of vigorous intensity exercise 3 times a week.

Adults should also train each major muscle group 2-3 times a week, making sure to wait at least 48 hours between resistance training sessions.

If you don’t already exercise regularly, ease yourself into the habit, don’t try to do too much in the first day, if your goal is to walk for 30 minutes a day, start with 10-15 minutes and work yourself up to 30 minutes, there is no rush, go at your own pace, avoid extreme workout videos and if possible join a gym and have an expert design your workout plan.
