Thanksgiving Safety Tips

Thanksgiving Safety Tips

Turkey Day is Here! Be Thankful and Stay Safe

This has been a challenging year for most, and some of us are still recovering from the devastation hurricane Harvey caused, but, it is because of all these challenges that we have so much to be thankful for this year.

Altus Emergency Centers and its staff are thankful for our communities, for demonstrating that together we can do anything; we are honored and humbled for the trust and loyalty you have shown us, and we are thankful for the opportunity to still be here to help you and your loved ones during a medical emergency.

We want everyone to have a happy and most of all safe Thanksgiving this year, so please read on, and follow our Thanksgiving safety tips.  Injury prevention is always the best policy.

Travel During Thanksgiving Safety Tips

This year the American Automobile Association (AAA), estimates that close to 51 million Americans will drive 50 miles or more from their homes to spend the Thanksgiving Holiday with family or friends, this means you should expect heavy traffic in the days leading to and after Turkey Day, so plan ahead, to avoid accidents and delays we recommend the following Thanksgiving Safety Tips:

  • Check the weather along your route, make sure to subscribe to a service that can provide updates, and drive around storms never through.

  • Make sure everyone in the car is wearing their seatbelts.

  • Don’t drink and drive.

  • Don’t drive if you are extremely tired, it is better if you stop and rest for a bit, or have one of your companions take the wheel while you rest.

  • Do not text while you are driving, it is deadly and illegal.

  • Respect the speed limit, road signs, and general rules of the road.

  • Keep your distance from other vehicles.

  • Make sure your windshield is clean, and headlights, taillights, and signal lights are all working properly.

  • Turn your headlights on at dusk, or if it is raining.

Thanksgiving Cooking Safety

Thanksgiving Safety Tips are particularly important to keep in mind when cooking. For those of you hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year, safety should be your number one priority, there are many Thanksgiving Safety Tips to consider:

Turkey Safety

This is the star of the evening, and therefore it should be handled with extreme care when you are preparing it.

  • If you are buying a fresh turkey, wait until the last possible moment and certainly no more than 2 days before cooking it, keep it in the refrigerator at a 40°F or less.

  • If your turkey is frozen, the USDA recommends you thaw it in the fridge, alternately you could use cold water or the microwave if you are running short on time.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water before handling any food to prevent the spread of infection and other illnesses.

  • Do not wash the turkey, this only serves to spread viruses and bacteria onto kitchen surfaces.

  • Keep the uncooked turkey separated from other foods to avoid contamination.

  • Cook the turkey until it reaches a temperature of 165°F, fully cooking the bird is the only way to ensure any bacteria that cause foodborne illnesses has been eliminated.

thanksgiving-cooking-safety-tips-altus-er

Cooking Safety

Sadly, Thanksgiving is the leading day for home cooking fires.  The good news is that with a little preparation and some simple Thanksgiving Safety Tips as guidelines, these can easily be avoided.

  • Avoid wearing loose-fitting clothing and long dangling sleeves when cooking, to avoid your clothing catching fire.

  • Never leave the stove unattended.

  • Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the stove or oven as steam or splashing from hot liquids can cause severe burns.

  • Keep children away from knives and other sharp kitchen utensils.

  • Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

  • Keep items like kitchen towels, pot holders, oven mitts, and wooden utensils away from heat sources as they could catch fire.

  • Keep your kitchen clean, grease build-up can easily start a fire.

  • Before going to bed check the oven and stove top to ensure everything is turned off.

  • Store leftovers properly in the fridge.

Have a Safe and Blessed Thanksgiving from All of Us!

Cuts and burns can happen to the best of chefs, and most won’t require medical attention, but, if you happen to seriously injure yourself or someone that’s with you gets hurt, we’re open 24 hours a day through the Thanksgiving Holiday at Altus Emergency Centers. With any luck we will have you back in time to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner.  Have a Happy Thanksgiving Weekend from all of us at Altus Emergency Centers!

Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips

Trick–or–Treating Safety Tips

Halloween is by far the most fun filled night of the year for children and yes, for adults too, let’s face it, what can be better than dressing up, staying up late and eating a ton of yummy treats?

But, there is a scary side to Halloween that tops any ghost, goblin, ghouls, or things that go bump in the night, we are of course referring to accidents. Sadly, we at Altus Emergency Centers know all too well how devastating these can be.  This year, we would like to ensure that all enjoy the fun of Halloween without the dangers by practicing good trick-or-treating safety tips.

Horrifying Halloween Facts

Trick–or–Treating-Safety-Tips-Halloween-Facts
Trick–or–Treating-Safety-Tips-Halloween-Facts
  • Kids are twice as likely to be hit by a motor vehicle and sustain serious injury or even death on Halloween night than any other night of the year.

  • Kids with severe food allergies are especially vulnerable during a trick-or-treat run.  As much as they can’t wait to enjoy a bite of delicious candy, please remember that food safety is an important part of trick-or-treating safety.

  • Elaborate costumes especially those that include long or loose-fitting clothing, masks, or props such as swords, can impair vision and make it difficult for a child to move, increasing their risk of falling and injuring themselves.

  • Carving a pumpkin is a dangerous affair, especially for small kids, deep cuts that require stitching are common this time of year.

  • Severe burns from a candle lit Jack O’ Lanterns are all too common.

Halloween Safety Tips

Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips

As frightening as these facts are, you need not worry, the heroic staff of Altus Emergency Centers is here to help you avert the terrors of the night, follow our trick-or-treating safety tips, and enjoy a fun night with your family.

  • Our first trick-or-treating safety tip is important at all times, not only on Halloween.  Never let kids under 12-years of age go trick-or-treating alone if you cannot accompany them, make sure a trusted adult is with them.

  • If you have older kids that will be going out on their own, make sure they are traveling in a group, and follow their route with the use of the GPS tracking system on their phones. Agree on a specific time they should return home.

  • Plan your route in advance, if possible avoid heavy traffic areas. Stick to a route you and your kids are familiar with.

  • Choose costumes that are bright or attach some reflective tape to the costume and trick-or-treat bags to increase visibility and help motorists spot your kids from a distance.

  • Make sure shoes are comfy and well fitted, trick-or-treating could take you several blocks away from home, comfy shoes are necessary to prevent blisters.

  • Masks can block or limit eyesight, making it difficult for your child to navigate and increasing their risk of injury, to avoid this consider using non-toxic makeup and well-fitted hats instead.

  • Makeup should be tested ahead of time on a small patch of skin to ensure there are no allergic reactions, if your child suffers one, take him/her immediately to the nearest Altus ER Center for treatment.

  • Remove all makeup before your kids go to bed to prevent skin and eye irritation.

  • When out shopping for costumes, wigs, and other accessories, make sure the label clearly states they are flame resistant.

  • The next trick-or-treating safety tip begins with costume selection to avoid potential injuries associated with falling.  Ensure your child’s costume is the appropriate length, long costumes increase the chances of your child tripping and hurting themselves.

  • If possible avoid costumes with weapons, but, if your child won’t have it any other way, make sure swords, knives, guns, etc. are short, soft, and flexible.

  • Never use over-the-counter decorative contact lenses, as these can cause pain, inflammation, infections, and other serious eye disorders which may lead to permanent vision loss. All contact lenses should be prescribed by an eye care professional.

  • Teach your kids how to call 911 or any other emergency number if they get lost or feel they may be in any sort of danger.

  • Instruct your kids to never get into a stranger’s car.

  • Tell your kids not to eat any treats until they return home, especially if they have food allergies. Inspect all treats before allowing your children to consume them.

  • Limit the number of sweets your kids can eat at once, hide the candy and allow them to consume it a little at a time over the next few days or weeks.

  • Never let small children carve a pumpkin, instead have them draw a scary face on it with a marker.

  • Choose to light up your Jack O’ Lantern with a flashlight, battery operated led light, or glow stick instead of a candle.

Emergency Nurses Week

Happy Emergency Nurses Week!

Emergency Nurses Week. Honoring Those Who Care for All

Altus ER is proud to celebrate another Emergency Nurses Week along with the most talented and dedicated group of Emergency Nurses ever assembled. While we are grateful every day for the hard work these professionals do, we take special care to honor their dedication and commitment to helping patients this week.

Through their compassion and deep understanding of the human condition, our knowledgeable nurses do so much more than just administer care to patients who walk through our doors every day, they provide comfort and reassurance, they educate patients and their families, they are therapists and advisors, and most importantly they are advocates of their patients.

They're Special!

What Makes Emergency Room Nurses So Special?

Like other nurses, they must complete a rigorous medical training and become licensed before they can practice their profession, but, what sets an emergency room nurse apart from nurses in other areas of healthcare, is their ability to react in a stressful situation. Because they are the frontline of triage they face multiple types of injuries every day, from splinters, and minor cuts to severe trauma which can be life-threatening.

Keeping calm in stressful situations, where patients and their loved ones are in pain, shock, and fearful, is an invaluable trait every one of our emergency nurses possesses. They have an uncanny emotional stability that allows them to cope with dire situations while remaining calm and sympathetic as they provide the highest quality of patient care.

They are the liaison between emergency doctors and patients, often translating complex medical lingo pertaining to diagnosis, and treatment, making it easier for patients and their loved ones to understand, they diligently listen to patient concerns and answer questions in a truthful yet tactful manner.

They keep the emergency room and doctors organized, allowing us to ensure our patients zero wait times when they visit any of our facilities. They are the heart and soul of our business, responsible for so many critical aspects of our operation including:

Emergency-Nurses-Week-Altus-ER-Centers

Triage

These caring souls are the ones who assess the severity of a patient’s condition and collect their medical history. With this information, they can quickly assign the patient to the doctor on staff best qualified to attend their needs.

Patient Care

Taking vital signs, administering medication, monitoring patient progress, helping to stabilize patients, caring for wounds, and assisting with critical patients are all part of an emergency nurse’s duties. In addition to these, our nurses are responsible for the patient’s medical chart, making sure it is up to date and accurate, this part of the process is of the utmost importance, as any missing or inaccurate information could hinder treatment and possibly endanger the patient’s life.

Emergency-Nurses-Week-Altus-ER-Centers

Patient Discharge

Emergency nurses also handle all patient discharges, making sure all paperwork is appropriately filled out, and patients and their families understand all doctor recommendations and treatment course.

Thank You to All of Our Amazing Nurses!

In the wake of the terrible disaster caused by Hurricane Harvey, this Emergency Nurses Week, Altus Emergency Centers would like to celebrate, honor, and express our infinite gratitude to our formidable emergency nurses who have proven to be the most selfless, powerful, resourceful, and masterful human beings.

During those times of crisis as they do every day, they never stopped, and never faulted in their commitment to saving lives, providing comfort, and helping patients through their darkest moments. For that and everything they do for patients every day, we at Altus Emergency Centers are eternally grateful.

Altus Emergency Nurses Are the Best!

People who choose to become an ER nurse were born with a special calling.   At Altus Emergency Centers, our RN’s are the cream of the crop!  Although Emergency Nurses Week lasts only seven days, you are on call 27/7/365 days of the year.   You help us win awards, you are Altus ER embassadors, you work actively to help build up your Texas communities, you are our friends who help us feel better.  Thank you to all the brave men and women RN’s of Altus Emergency Centers!

Great experience and a great lesson learned. We went for an open flesh wound caused by a dog bite. We were in and out of Altus in about 30 minutes compared to the 4 hour wait time at the hospital. Great facility, nice staff, and beats waiting at the ER. For the dog bite, they gave my wife a tetanus shot and cleaned up the wound with some iodine or peroxide and wrote her a prescription for an antibiotic. Going to a Primary Care Physician or Urgent care with insurance would be inexpensive. Going to an emergency center, whether at the hospital or and independent location like Altus, should be a last resort. A friend of mine who is a nurse told us, “Emergency care is the best and most expensive care you’ll ever receive, even with insurance, It’s why nurses avoid the ER.”This applies to ANY ER you visit. Expect to receive at leaset 2 bills, one from the facility (Altus) and one from each specialist (Dr. Noname), i.e. on call physician, radiologist if you need Xrays, pathologist, etc. HERE’S WHAT GOT US. Our BCBSTX covered 70% of the facility visit but DID NOT pay for the doctor. I’m not going to get into how much the total visit was, but it was something I was not able to afford at the time. I spoke with a nurse and she gave me the Administrator’s card. I explained to him the situation and he was quite pleasant to speak with. I OWE AMIR BASHIRI a BIG BIG BIG THANK YOU for the financial assistance you were able to provide us with.

— Reagan Martin

Summer Cookouts.

Summer is here and the weather is perfect for a delicious cookout, bring out the grill, some cold drinks, and impress your friends with your outdoor cooking abilities while you enjoy this special day.

Fourth of July Safety Tips for Summer Cookouts:

  • Never leave your grill unattended.

  • Keep children and pets away from the hot grill.

  • Place your grill out in the open, away from flammable objects like tree branches and curtains.

Swimming, Boating, Tubing, and Other Water Activities

July is one of the hottest months of the year, so it is no surprise we love to cool down either in a pool, tubing down a river, spending the day at the beach or going for a boat ride. Water activities are one of the best ways to create fun memories of summer.

Fourth of July Safety Tips for Water Activities:

  • Always keep an eye on the kids when you are close to water.

  • If you are on a boat, make sure everyone on board is wearing a Coast Guard approved life jacket.

  • Before going into the water at the beach or a river check for warning signs posted by the authorities.

  • Wear sunscreen and drink plenty of fluids.

  • Don’t dive head first into rivers or pools if you are not sure how deep they are.

Picnics and Block Parties

Few things are more American than gathering with neighbors to share a meal, 4th of July picnics and neighborhood block parties are a staple of American tradition. Organize a potluck lunch, sit on lawn chairs, have a drink with your neighbors and relax in good company.

Fourth of July Safety Tips for Picnics:

  • Stay in the shade as much as possible.

  • Keep hydrated.

  • Store food in coolers; remember the hot weather accelerated the spoiling process of uncooked food.

  • Check for ticks; summer is tick season, and these pesky little critters can carry diseases like Lyme Disease and West Nile Virus.

  • Wear insect repellent.

Fireworks

It wouldn’t be a 4th of July celebration without a firework display. Attending a local firework show is the best way to end a fun packed day, arrive early and claim the perfect spot to view the show, and marvel at the beauty and artistry of these professional displays.

Fourth of July Safety Tips for Fireworks:

  • Leave the firework display to the professionals. Texas law prohibits private citizens from using, selling, or possessing fireworks.

  • If you have small children, it is best to cover their ears with noise cancelling headphones to prevent damage to their tender ears.

Keep pets at home in a safe place where they won’t be able to escape, harm themselves or others due to the stress caused by fireworks.

Take Care of Yourself and Your Loved Ones.

15 Reasons Why Texas Dads Are the Best! Happy Father’s Day

15 Reasons Why Texas Dads Are the Best!

Happy Father’s Day!

This is a tribute to all the hard-working Texas Dads that every day: nurture, educate, support, and unconditionally love their families.

#15: TEXAS BBQ

Nobody does barbecue better than Texas Dads. From hamburgers to brisket, everything they throw on the grill tastes like heaven! They keep their families happy and united, all anxiously waiting for seconds.

#14: GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR

Texas dads know how to tell a joke.  They’re great at lovingly embarrassing their wives and kids.  Their silliness is full of wisdom, meant to always show the sunny side of life. They cheer us up and put a smile on our faces every day!

#13: THEY CAN DANCE

Whether they’re great dancers or not, Texas Dads don’t shy away from the dance floor.  Even if they’re not in the mood, “Sometimes ya just got to put on your boots and dance, anyway…” Every daddy’s girl has great memories of dancing around the house with her favorite dance partner!

#12: THEY’RE STRAIGHT SHOOTERS

Texas men are assertive.  They say what they mean and mean what they say. Never expect Texas Dads to sugar coat things. They believe in “toughening you up” to survive in life. A good Texas father will make sure their message is driven home, the first time around, to avoid future mishaps.

#11: THEY’RE HANDY

Texas dads always seem to have power tools close by and like good Southern men, they know their way around a warehouse. They can fix a leaky faucet, install a light fixture or even build a shed.  Best of all, to their kids’ delight, they’re architects of the most awesome tree houses.

#10: THEY MORE THAN LOVE SPORTS

Sports are a big part of every Texas dad’s life, if they’re not playing, they are watching. We’ve learned how to throw and catch a ball, how to swing a bat, and how to ride a bike from our dads. They even influenced us on which will be our favorite team to cheer for. Most importantly, they are the biggest fans of their own kids.

#9: THEY ARE WISE

Texas dads are full of wisdom because they have seen and done a thing or two in their lifetime. Everyone has a different way of imparting knowledge and Texan fathers have a special knack for it.  If we were hanging with the wrong crowd, we’d hear, “If you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas.” We know not be gullible since, “Just because a chicken has wings, don’t mean it can fly.” They have a witty saying for just about everything and each has been passed down to him over generations of Texas fathers.

#8: THEY LOVE THE OUTDOORS

Avid outdoorsy men, Texas Dads love to go camping and hiking. Organizing weekend expeditions is one of their best skills, they take us tubing down a slow-moving Texas river, or on a fishing trip out on the lake. Some of our best childhood memories were created out on the countryside with dad.

#7: HARD-WORKING

All Texans, men and women know the value of an honest day’s work. Texas dads were brought up on traditional morals and values. They are committed in every aspect of their lives and this shows in their work ethic. They teach their children by example to take pride in a job well done!

They always manage to sneak in a life lesson that we will cherish forever.

There is no denying that Texas men are handsome, with their rugged good looks, self confidence and twinkle of mischief in their eyes.  They have a style and charm that make them irresistible.  As George W. Bush once said, “Some folks look at me and see a certain swagger, which in Texas is called ‘walking.'” Mommy never had a chance!
