Meet the Lumberton Administrator Richelle Blackburn

An Interview with the Lumberton Administrator Richelle Blackburn

Introducing – Richelle Blackburn, our caring and respected Administrator at Altus Emergency Center Lumberton.

Administrator, Richelle Blackburn heads our spirited team at Altus Emergency Center in Lumberton.  Since its establishment in Lumberton in 2013, this freestanding emergency center has been a beacon of hope for thousands of families who would have had to drive long distances to get high-quality emergency care.  Rather than arriving at Lumberton, it blossomed out of it as most of its staff made up of talented locals on a quest to bring the best to their community.  Heading this team is administrator Richelle Blackburn who is a highly active participant in community awareness and prevention campaigns as well as just for fun to bring out smiles.  Our administrator, Richelle Blackburn has helped inspire the team to participate in charity campaigns for flood and hurricane victims, to the promotion of better health awareness, and fun family-friendly activities such as the Trunk or Treat and the upcoming Touch a Truck.  Stay on top of these by visiting our Altus ER Lumberton Facebook and Instagram pages.

We invite you to get to know administrator Richelle Blackburn, our fearless leader that gets to know each of the staff members on a personal basis as well as the patients. It’s her smiling face that you will see in photos with the Lumberton Chamber of Commerce, with the Lumberton ISD and on funny videos trying to explain how to prevent an accident or an illness in a way that can be understood by all of us and not just the doctors.

“Richelle is the care giver of the group. Richelle takes much pride for the patient care as well as making sure staff is given their needs at facility. This creates a both win win for patient and staff. She is the reason for great customer service satisfaction and was meant to lead a healthcare facility. She cares for our health!”

Lovely Lady from Nederland

An Interview with Richelle, get to know her!

We enjoyed a lovely chat with Richelle Blackburn, born and raised in Nederland, Texas. She shared about her family, hobbies, and passions. The following are some highlights of our interview.

Click on each gallery photo for more details.

Q: “What you love most about living in Nederland, Texas?”

A:  Richelle:

I live close to all 4 of my sisters and my mom.  I could not imagine living anywhere else, I love and admire my family so much and I am so blessed to be close to them everyday.

Q:  “Why did you decide to go into healthcare administration?”

A:  Richelle:

Honestly, I had no interest in Healthcare at all as a career choice.  In 1992 while I was in college pursuing my Criminal Justice degree I interviewed for a position with Dr. Erlinda Punsalan.  While completing my degree, I truly grew to love the patients and the staff as well as Dr. Punsalan and from there my healthcare career grew!

Q:  “What or who have been your biggest influences or your mentor?”

A:  Richelle:

My mom! She is a beautiful, loving, kind soul who has overcome all obstacles in her life! She taught me to work hard, never give up, and that I can achieve anything I set my mind on!  An AMAZING role model for me!

Q: “What is your secret to success?

A: Richelle:

Am I successful?  I honestly have never considered my self successful rather blessed that I get the opportunity to provide leadership to others.

Q: “What is your management style? How do you like to communicate with your team?

A:  Richelle:

This was a hard one for me to answer so I had to ask others to help me provide an answer.  Inspirational Management! This is their answer! Truthfully, I aspire to motivate my staff to be the best they can be both in and outside of the workplace!

Q:How would you describe the company culture here?”

A:  Richelle:

“We are family.”

Q: “What is a good day like for you?

A:  Richelle:

Everyday is a Good Day!

Q: “How do you push through your tough times?

A:  Richelle:

My faith!  I know all things are possible through Christ who strengthens me.

Q: “What is your secret to success?

A:  Richelle:

Am I successful?  I honestly have never considered my self successful rather blessed that I get the opportunity to provide leadership to others.

Q: “What do you love most about working with Altus ER?

A:  Richelle:

Several things: The care we are able to provide for our patients and community.  My AMAZING staff who care for our patients with compassion and kindness every single day!

Q: “What do you do when you get time off?

A: Richelle:

Travel! I love to go on cruises, it is my time to truly relax and disconnect.

Q:  “How would you summarize yourself in four words?”

A: Richelle:

“Always puts others first”.

Blood Donations & Their Life Saving Powers

The Life Saving Powers of Blood Donations

The Importance of Blood

Blood is the sustenance of life, without adequate amounts of it flowing through our bodies, we would die.

Our bodies depend on a stable supply of oxygen and nutrients to sustain the billions of cells that make it up, no organ can survive without oxygen and nutrients which are transported throughout the body by our blood. But, blood also cleanses our bodies, it carries carbon dioxide and other waste materials to the lungs, kidneys, and intestines so they can be discharged from the body.

Blood helps regulate our body temperature, it also aids in fighting infections, it nurtures every cell and transports all waste materials, keeping us healthy.

How Many Donations Are Needed?

Every two seconds someone needs a blood transfusion and about 43,000 pints of donated blood are used every day in hospitals and emergency rooms across the country. Yet out of the 37% of eligible blood donors in the United States, only 10% donate yearly.

Donors are usually asked to give 1 pint of blood, and this single pint could save up to three lives. Today is a perfect day to become someone’s hero, by donating blood you could save someone’s father or mother, you could save a teacher or a police officer, your blood can save a child’s life.

Who Needs Your Blood?

When you donate blood, this is who you are helping:

  • 30% of blood recipients are cancer patients
  • 15% of blood recipients are suffering from heart disease
  • 15% of blood recipients are patients with bowel and stomach illnesses
  • 12% of blood recipients are burn victims
  • 12% of blood recipients have been involved in an accident
  • 6% of blood recipients are liver and kidney patients
  • 5% of blood recipients are pregnant women and babies
  • 5% of blood recipients are hemophiliacs

100% of blood recipients are someone’s loved one.

 Who can Donate Blood?

Any healthy individual over the age of 16 who weighs at least 110 lbs. can donate blood. Donors are usually asked to give 1 pint and they can donate that amount every 2 months.

What Are the Benefits of Donating Blood?

Aside from becoming a superhero who saves lives, donating blood has some surprising benefits for donors:

It May Improve Blood Flow

Sometimes our blood becomes “thick” due to high viscosity hampering its flow through our veins and arteries, this can damage the lining of the blood vessels and eventually lead to serious cardiovascular problems.

A study conducted by the American Journal of Epidemiology found that blood donors are 88% less likely to suffer from heart attacks, strokes, and cancers.

Your Iron Levels Will Stay Balanced

Healthy adults have approximately 5 grams of iron in their bodies. Iron is an essential mineral that aids in the production of red cells which are responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body.

When you donate blood, you lose roughly half a gram of iron which will get replenished from the food you consume in the days after donating. Regulating iron levels is a good thing because too much iron can damage the blood vessels while a deficiency in iron can cause anemia.

You Get a Free Mini-Checkup

Prior to donating blood, you will receive a physical exam that measures your pulse, blood pressure, and hemoglobin levels. Once you have donated a sample of your blood will be sent to the lab where it will undergo 13 different tests for infectious diseases, like HIV and West Nile Virus. If any of these tests come back positive you will be notified immediately.

This mini-checkup is free for donors and while it is not a substitute for your annual medical checkup it can help monitor your overall health.

You May Live Longer

A study published in Health Psychology found that people who volunteered for altruist purposes tend love live up to 4 years longer than those who do not volunteer to help others.

Emergency Nurses Week

Happy Emergency Nurses Week!

Emergency Nurses Week. Honoring Those Who Care for All

Altus ER is proud to celebrate another Emergency Nurses Week along with the most talented and dedicated group of Emergency Nurses ever assembled. While we are grateful every day for the hard work these professionals do, we take special care to honor their dedication and commitment to helping patients this week.

Through their compassion and deep understanding of the human condition, our knowledgeable nurses do so much more than just administer care to patients who walk through our doors every day, they provide comfort and reassurance, they educate patients and their families, they are therapists and advisors, and most importantly they are advocates of their patients.

They're Special!

What Makes Emergency Room Nurses So Special?

Like other nurses, they must complete a rigorous medical training and become licensed before they can practice their profession, but, what sets an emergency room nurse apart from nurses in other areas of healthcare, is their ability to react in a stressful situation. Because they are the frontline of triage they face multiple types of injuries every day, from splinters, and minor cuts to severe trauma which can be life-threatening.

Keeping calm in stressful situations, where patients and their loved ones are in pain, shock, and fearful, is an invaluable trait every one of our emergency nurses possesses. They have an uncanny emotional stability that allows them to cope with dire situations while remaining calm and sympathetic as they provide the highest quality of patient care.

They are the liaison between emergency doctors and patients, often translating complex medical lingo pertaining to diagnosis, and treatment, making it easier for patients and their loved ones to understand, they diligently listen to patient concerns and answer questions in a truthful yet tactful manner.

They keep the emergency room and doctors organized, allowing us to ensure our patients zero wait times when they visit any of our facilities. They are the heart and soul of our business, responsible for so many critical aspects of our operation including:

Triage

These caring souls are the ones who assess the severity of a patient’s condition and collect their medical history. With this information, they can quickly assign the patient to the doctor on staff best qualified to attend their needs.

Patient Care

Taking vital signs, administering medication, monitoring patient progress, helping to stabilize patients, caring for wounds, and assisting with critical patients are all part of an emergency nurse’s duties. In addition to these, our nurses are responsible for the patient’s medical chart, making sure it is up to date and accurate, this part of the process is of the utmost importance, as any missing or inaccurate information could hinder treatment and possibly endanger the patient’s life.

Emergency-Nurses-Week-Altus-ER-Centers

Patient Discharge

Emergency nurses also handle all patient discharges, making sure all paperwork is appropriately filled out, and patients and their families understand all doctor recommendations and treatment course.

Thank You to All of Our Amazing Nurses!

In the wake of the terrible disaster caused by Hurricane Harvey, this Emergency Nurses Week, Altus Emergency Centers would like to celebrate, honor, and express our infinite gratitude to our formidable emergency nurses who have proven to be the most selfless, powerful, resourceful, and masterful human beings.

During those times of crisis as they do every day, they never stopped, and never faulted in their commitment to saving lives, providing comfort, and helping patients through their darkest moments. For that and everything they do for patients every day, we at Altus Emergency Centers are eternally grateful.

Altus Emergency Nurses Are the Best!

People who choose to become an ER nurse were born with a special calling.   At Altus Emergency Centers, our RN’s are the cream of the crop!  Although Emergency Nurses Week lasts only seven days, you are on call 27/7/365 days of the year.   You help us win awards, you are Altus ER embassadors, you work actively to help build up your Texas communities, you are our friends who help us feel better.  Thank you to all the brave men and women RN’s of Altus Emergency Centers!

Great experience and a great lesson learned. We went for an open flesh wound caused by a dog bite. We were in and out of Altus in about 30 minutes compared to the 4 hour wait time at the hospital. Great facility, nice staff, and beats waiting at the ER. For the dog bite, they gave my wife a tetanus shot and cleaned up the wound with some iodine or peroxide and wrote her a prescription for an antibiotic. Going to a Primary Care Physician or Urgent care with insurance would be inexpensive. Going to an emergency center, whether at the hospital or and independent location like Altus, should be a last resort. A friend of mine who is a nurse told us, “Emergency care is the best and most expensive care you’ll ever receive, even with insurance, It’s why nurses avoid the ER.”This applies to ANY ER you visit. Expect to receive at leaset 2 bills, one from the facility (Altus) and one from each specialist (Dr. Noname), i.e. on call physician, radiologist if you need Xrays, pathologist, etc. HERE’S WHAT GOT US. Our BCBSTX covered 70% of the facility visit but DID NOT pay for the doctor. I’m not going to get into how much the total visit was, but it was something I was not able to afford at the time. I spoke with a nurse and she gave me the Administrator’s card. I explained to him the situation and he was quite pleasant to speak with. I OWE AMIR BASHIRI a BIG BIG BIG THANK YOU for the financial assistance you were able to provide us with.

— Reagan Martin

An Incredible Way to Close Summer

Three Hours Packed with Excitement at the Back to School Fest Lumberton 2017

The day was a pure delight! How we managed to pack so many fun activities in three hours is sincerely incredible. We started the event with door prizes for our guests full of school supplies, donated by Altus Emergency, Boogie & Tootsie’s Deli and Neches Federal Credit Union. We had Extreme Bouncers and Slides bring out a bounce house and a water slide for kids to enjoy. This was a big hit with the younger kids!

That was just the tip of the iceberg… Other exciting activities at the Back to School Fest Lumberton 2017 included: a rock painting station, cotton candy station, free snow cones from Kona Ice, a face painter, the Lumberton Police, Fire and Swat team and two photo booths with live DJ Rayman playing music. Additionally, we had local vendors come out and provide services and giveaways for the people attending: Christy Boudreaux DDS, Lumberton Chamber of Commerce, Sprint Print, Girl Scouts, Cricket Wireless, Fuller Options, Chiropractor Ana Bumstead, MET Head Start, Sassy Southern Salon and Boutique, Crestwood Baptist Church, and Julie Rodgers Gift of Life.

What a joy to be a part of something so special! The purpose of the Back to School Lumberton 2017 is not only to pave the way for the next school year in fun but also to help make a difference through worthy causes. Nothing is better than giving children encouragement to prosper and grow.

Thank you to everyone who donated to help the Lumberton Civic Women’s League/Caring Hearts #BacktheBackPack Cause during the Back to School Fest Lumberton 2017. We as a staff also collected 27 backpacks full of school supplies for local kids, which was our Altus Gives charity for August. In addition, we had LifeShare doing a blood donation. Texas Parks to Visit and Recreation Safety Tips to Enjoy

Texas Parks to Visit and Recreation Safety Tips to Enjoy

Let’s Learn About Park and Recreation Safety

In celebration of National Parks and Recreation Month, Altus Emergency Centers is challenging the community to improve their quality of life by going out and enjoying one of the many parks around their city. The best way to plan out a great time outdoors is to first learn about park and recreation safety.

Spending time outdoors promotes a healthy vibrant community life, whether it’s summer camp, a sports league, exploring a trail, playing chess in the park, or organizing play dates for the kids; parks are the perfect gathering place.

To ensure you experience a safe outing, we have prepared a handy list of Park and Recreation Safety Tips to keep in mind!

National Parks & Recreation Month: Keeping it Safe and Fun

Playground Safety Tips.

The most common summer activity is a trip to the playground.  The following park and recreation safety tips are important to keep in mind during your visit the the playground:

  • Wear Proper Shoes: Make sure your kids footwear is adequate to play and run, never let your child play barefoot at the park as they may be bitten by insects, step on a thorn or small rock or burn their feet on hot surfaces.
  • Watch Out for Hot Surfaces: During summer, slides, swings, monkey bars, merry-go-rounds and even picnic tables may become overheated by the sun, so, always check the surface temperature.
  • Stranger Danger: Teach your children not to speak or follow adult strangers, and to immediately run towards you or someone they know to report the incident. While not everyone has bad intentions, it is best for kids not to engage in conversation with adults they do not know.

Hiking Safety Tips

Hiking is an excellent acivity for all ages.  You may choose the pace and distance that you wish to hike and enjoy the scenery during your voyage. The following park and recreation safety tips are important to keep in mind when planning on your next hiking quest:

  • Tell People: Always inform friends and family the route you’ll be taking and how long you expect to be gone; if possible always travel with a companion.
  • Carry ID: Make sure to carry some sort of ID that includes your name, phone number, address, pertinent medical information, and emergency contact information.
  • Carry a Whistle: This will help scare wild animals or signal for help should you be injured.
  • Plan Your Route: Become familiarized with a trail before you head out, do not venture into unknown hiking trails by yourself.

Camping Safety Tips

If you’re a woodsy person at heart, camping is wonderful to replenish the mind and spirit.  It is particulary important to heed the park and recreation safety tips while on your home in the wilderness away from home.

  • Stay Away from Wildlife: Clearly one of the joys of camping is to commune with nature, but, it is better to enjoy the wildlife from afar. If you do come face to face with a wild animal, regardless of if it’s a bear or a squirrel do your best not to disturb them, this will keep you out of trouble and possibly a visit to one of our centers.
  • Respect the Fire Rules of the Park: Most parks that offer camping sites have clear rules when it comes to camp fires, make sure you find out what they are and that you respect them. Unattended or poorly managed campfires have been known to start wildfires that can destroy thousands of acres, kill wildlife, and endanger human population as well.
  • Store Food Carefully: Again, check the food regulations with park officials before you set out on your camping trip. Food should be properly stored for several reasons, preventing food poisoning while camping and, avoiding a close encounter with dangerous animals.
National-Parks-and-Recreation-Month-General-Safety-Tips

General Park Safety Tips

No matter which outdoor activity is your cup of tea, the following are universal park and recreation safety tips to always take into consideration:

  • Wear Sunscreen: We cannot stress the importance of sunscreen enough, make sure to reapply every couple of hours to avoid getting sunburned.
  • Stay Hydrated: Carry a water bottle, and, if you plan to go for a hike, make sure to take snacks along with you.
  • Check for Ticks: Lyme Disease is a serious illness, it can be easily treated when diagnosed early, but, if left untreated, it can linger for years and cause serious side effects. After a day at the park, make sure you check yourself and your family for ticks.
  • Watch Out for Poisonous Plants: Learn to identify the different poisonous plants that grow in these parts, poison ivy and poison sumac can both cause nasty rashes just by touching them, but poison hemlock can actually kill you. If you come in contact with any of these plants head to the nearest Altus Emergency Center for treatment, if possible take a picture of the plant so we can identify it and administer the proper treatment.
