Fun Handwashing Tips for Kids

Fun Handwashing Tips for Kids

Tricks to Show Your Kids How to Wash Their Hands Correctly

This is the final day of National Handwashing Awareness Week. For adults who don’t spend a lot of time with children, this celebration might seem a little unnecessary, but to parents who are constantly trying to get their kids to wash their hands before eating, after going to the restroom and when they come inside from playing, this is an extremely important event.

As always, we at Altus ER have some effective tricks up our sleeve to help you parents instill good hygiene habits onto your kids, handwashing can seem a boring chore for kids, but we are here to help you make it less of a chore and more of a fun activity.

Why Should You Teach Your Kids Proper Handwashing Techniques?

Proper handwashing is the best way to prevent children from becoming sick and spreading germs. Teaching your kids to wash their hands with soap and water will help prevent them from contracting the following illnesses:

  • The common cold and flu virus

  • Hepatitis A

  • Meningitis

  • Bronchiolitis

  • And many types of diarrhea

What is the proper way to wash your hands?

Are your Hands Really Clean?

A study conducted by researchers at the Michigan State University in 2013, revealed that an alarming 95% of people do not properly wash their hands.

The CDC’s guidelines for washing hands include the following steps:

  • Wet your hands with water (temperature does not matter).

  • Lather your hands with soap, make sure you apply soap to the back of your hands as well.

  • Scrub your hands for 20 seconds or more, make sure to scrub the back of your hands, wrists, in between fingers and under the fingernails.

  • Rinse with plenty of water.

  • Dry your hands thoroughly with a clean towel or air dryer.

Fun Ways to Get Your Child to Wash Their Hands

Learning-Good-Health-Habits-Can-be-Fun-with-Altus-ER-Centers-Texas

Sing a Song

The CDC recommends you sing happy birthday twice when you are scrubbing your hands to ensure you do it for at least 20 seconds, it’s probably not the best song to have your kids sing every day as they might expect a birthday present and cake.

You can create your own song about washing hands, or you can use a popular one that is sung to the tune of “Row your Boat” it goes like this: “wash, wash, wash your hands, wash them nice and clean. Scrub the fronts and scrub the backs and scrub the in-between” You will need to sing this at least twice.

Buy Fun Soaps

Kids love to play, so why not let them play with soap? Buying fun shape soap bars or liquid soap that have their favorite characters on the label is a good way to get kids to want to wash their hands.

Get Creative

Here are some more fun and creative ideas to get your kids to want to wash their hands:

  • Mix some glitter with water in a spray bottle, spray their hands with this mixture then have them wash it off, if you have more than one kid turn it into a friendly competition to see who can get the glitter off first.

  • Teach your kids how to blow soap bubbles, have them later and scrub their hands properly and then show them how they can make a circle with their thumb and forefinger and blow bubbles.

  • Buy them a water safe toy and have them give it a proper wash.

  • Make a game where you task your kids to get rid of pesky germs by scrubbing their hands, make funny noises and in the end, say bye, bye germs.

When Should You Pay Altus Emergency Centers a Visit?

Find-an-ER-Near-Me-Altus-Emergency-Centers-Texas

Teaching your children to properly wash their hands is something that will safeguard them for life, however, regardless of how careful you are with their hygiene, there will be times when they will get sick, and that is when Altus Emergency Centers will be there to take care of your little ones.

Altus Emergency Centers is here for you during the worst of the flu season and the rest of year 24/7.  We hope you don’t fall victim to the flu virus this year, but if you do, and you show any of the above signs, visit your nearest Altus ER.  We will be here to nurse you and your loved ones back to health and enjoying the December holidays.

Kevin Herrington Harvey Testimony Texas Senate HHS Hearing

Kevin Herrington Harvey Testimony before the Texas Senate HHS Hearing

For 5 Days, Altus Emergency was the Only Healthcare Facility Open & Operational in Hardin County

Kevin Herrington, TAFEC Board member and President of Altus Emergency Centers gave a solid testimony at the Texas State Capitol on November 8th, 2017 about the importance of Freestanding Emergency Centers in Texas.  The following is a video clip from the Texas State Capitol, Senate Committee on Health and Human Services Interim Charge Hearing followed by highlights from his testimony.

A decision was made to stay open and serve the community, because of this decision, lives were saved.

VIDEO CLIP of Kevin Herrington's Testimony

Kevin Herrington’s Testimony on Freestanding Emergency Centers During Hurricane Harvey.

Altus Emergency Centers President Speaks at the Texas State Senate About Harvey’s Impact Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

President of Altus Emergency Centers, Kevin Herrington, MBA, FACHE, spoke openly at the Texas Senate HHS Hearing making it clear that “we are fully capable of handling all types of emergencies.”

During Hurricane Harvey, Lumberton just North of Beaumont became an island.  Due to the decision of remaining open, prepared and operational, Altus Emergency Center Lumberton became the only healthcare facility in Hardin County to take 911 calls during five of the most crucially impacted days of Harvey.

We worked multiple days, 6 – 8 days straight with the supplies that we had on our hand which were for about 3 days of supplies. – KH.

Although requests were made on several occations for additonal supplies and were refused all times, “We were able to provide for ourselves the additional days of supplies through other sources.”  Today, the residents of Hardin county are grateful for the care Altus Emergency Centers delivered during Harvey.

Among the patients treated, there were life and death cases.

The types of patients that we would see were critical patients, they were traumas, electrocutions, broken bones an oxygenated patient on a respirator. 49% of the patients were on compensated care.

During Kevin Herrington’s testimony, he stressed the importance of the lessons learned during Harvey.  The four main points that we should keep in mind for the future of Texas:

1.  We have proven that we can manage emergencies.  Altus Emergency Center Lumberton demonstrated that we are well capable of handling emergencies.

2.  Help us allow Medicaid in Freestanding Emergency Centers.  This will allow us to help save more lives during times of urgency.

3.  Help us with the code related to Texas Emergency Centers which is currently restrictive to allow for more scope of care to provide more assistance to the communities that we serve.  “For example,” expressed KH, “the only CT machine can only be used for emergency patients and not for the outpatient population.”

4.  This is a good model to follow.  If we are recognized by Medicare / Medicaid and our scope is flexible, this is a good resource for rural Texas. This will allow freestanding emergency centers to into rural communities to provide much needed high quality healthcare.

Thank you to the Altus Emergency Center staff, which put their own personal needs aside, and banded together to put the lives of our Texas communities first.  With all of your help we were able to keep our facilities in Baytown, Lake Jackson, Lumberton, and Waxahachie open before, during and after the storm.  Thank you Team Altus ER for always offering much needed medical attention to patients who otherwise would not have received any attention, we saved lives in the process and that is ultimately our mission.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips

Turkey Day is Here! Be Thankful and Stay Safe

This has been a challenging year for most, and some of us are still recovering from the devastation hurricane Harvey caused, but, it is because of all these challenges that we have so much to be thankful for this year.

Altus Emergency Centers and its staff are thankful for our communities, for demonstrating that together we can do anything; we are honored and humbled for the trust and loyalty you have shown us, and we are thankful for the opportunity to still be here to help you and your loved ones during a medical emergency.

We want everyone to have a happy and most of all safe Thanksgiving this year, so please read on, and follow our Thanksgiving safety tips.  Injury prevention is always the best policy.

Travel During Thanksgiving Safety Tips

This year the American Automobile Association (AAA), estimates that close to 51 million Americans will drive 50 miles or more from their homes to spend the Thanksgiving Holiday with family or friends, this means you should expect heavy traffic in the days leading to and after Turkey Day, so plan ahead, to avoid accidents and delays we recommend the following Thanksgiving Safety Tips:

  • Check the weather along your route, make sure to subscribe to a service that can provide updates, and drive around storms never through.

  • Make sure everyone in the car is wearing their seatbelts.

  • Don’t drink and drive.

  • Don’t drive if you are extremely tired, it is better if you stop and rest for a bit, or have one of your companions take the wheel while you rest.

  • Do not text while you are driving, it is deadly and illegal.

  • Respect the speed limit, road signs, and general rules of the road.

  • Keep your distance from other vehicles.

  • Make sure your windshield is clean, and headlights, taillights, and signal lights are all working properly.

  • Turn your headlights on at dusk, or if it is raining.

Thanksgiving Cooking Safety

Thanksgiving Safety Tips are particularly important to keep in mind when cooking. For those of you hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year, safety should be your number one priority, there are many Thanksgiving Safety Tips to consider:

Turkey Safety

This is the star of the evening, and therefore it should be handled with extreme care when you are preparing it.

  • If you are buying a fresh turkey, wait until the last possible moment and certainly no more than 2 days before cooking it, keep it in the refrigerator at a 40°F or less.

  • If your turkey is frozen, the USDA recommends you thaw it in the fridge, alternately you could use cold water or the microwave if you are running short on time.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water before handling any food to prevent the spread of infection and other illnesses.

  • Do not wash the turkey, this only serves to spread viruses and bacteria onto kitchen surfaces.

  • Keep the uncooked turkey separated from other foods to avoid contamination.

  • Cook the turkey until it reaches a temperature of 165°F, fully cooking the bird is the only way to ensure any bacteria that cause foodborne illnesses has been eliminated.

thanksgiving-cooking-safety-tips-altus-er

Cooking Safety

Sadly, Thanksgiving is the leading day for home cooking fires.  The good news is that with a little preparation and some simple Thanksgiving Safety Tips as guidelines, these can easily be avoided.

  • Avoid wearing loose-fitting clothing and long dangling sleeves when cooking, to avoid your clothing catching fire.

  • Never leave the stove unattended.

  • Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the stove or oven as steam or splashing from hot liquids can cause severe burns.

  • Keep children away from knives and other sharp kitchen utensils.

  • Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

  • Keep items like kitchen towels, pot holders, oven mitts, and wooden utensils away from heat sources as they could catch fire.

  • Keep your kitchen clean, grease build-up can easily start a fire.

  • Before going to bed check the oven and stove top to ensure everything is turned off.

  • Store leftovers properly in the fridge.

Have a Safe and Blessed Thanksgiving from All of Us!

Cuts and burns can happen to the best of chefs, and most won’t require medical attention, but, if you happen to seriously injure yourself or someone that’s with you gets hurt, we’re open 24 hours a day through the Thanksgiving Holiday at Altus Emergency Centers. With any luck we will have you back in time to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner.  Have a Happy Thanksgiving Weekend from all of us at Altus Emergency Centers!

Exploring Waxahachie, Where Fun and History Intertwine

The county seat of Ellis County is happening place filled with eclectic charm.  Less than an hour South of Dallas lies the historical town of Waxahachie.  Whether you’re simply thinking of exploring Waxahachie or are considering moving there, prepare yourself to get to know the Gingerbread Bread City.

Waxahachie is a town full of history and fun activities for the whole family, well worth exploring any time of the year.

Here are just some of the many interesting facts to help pique your curiosity! Get to know the home of the newest Altus Emergency Center through Exploring Waxahachie!

What's in a Name?

Exploring-Waxahachie-Texas-About-the-Name

As we set off exploring Waxahachie, the first thing that people will notice is its unusual name.  There has been a lot of mystery surrounding the name of the town, the most popular theory is that it has its origins with the Alabama Coushatta people who migrated to the area in 1850, at roughly the same time the town was founded.

If this is the case and it is a native Alabama language term, then Waxahachie means “calf’s tail”; the Alabama word “waaka” is an adaptation of the Spanish word vaca which means cow. Source: en.wikipedia.org This just goes to show that it’s a small world after all.

Exploring-Waxahachie-Texas-Crape-Myrtle-Capital-of-Texas

As we drive up to our destination exploring Waxahachie, we will be greeted by a happy sign, ‘Welcome to Waxahachie, the Gingerbread City”. As in many towns in Texas, Waxahachie has its own nicknames.  Locals will commonly refer to it as “Hachie” for short.  Other common names are Crape Myrtle Capital of Texas and in its past history, the Cotton Capital of Texas.

Eccentric Neighbors

Exploring-Waxahachie-Texas-Munster-Mansion-Replica

One of the town’s landmarks is the Munster Mansion, an almost exact replica of the 1960’s TV show’s home of the Munster Family.

Charles and Sandra McKee, watched all 70 episodes of the show to come up with the floor plan to their unusual home.  The Waxahachie owners are such great fans of the classic show that they even included all of the props of the original home such as the coffin shaped phone booth, the electric chair, the stairwell, the kitchen with the bubbling brew and even the smallest details like the cobwebs and the cracks on the wall. If you are wondering if they keep Spot, their pet dragon under the stairs, the answer is… Yes!

If you would like to go exploring Waxahachie from an eccentrically spooky perspective, the Munsters Mansion is open to the public on Halloween each year, when the owners host a charity event.

Historic Architecture

Exploring-Waxahachie-Texas-Gingerbread-City

From its beginnings, Waxahachie has been an economically thriving town that was left relatively unaffected by the Civil War. Source: tshaonline.org  Today, the prosperity of those times survives in the architecture that remains; majestic Victorian-style houses and buildings meticulously restored dating back before 1900.  Thanks to these architectural treasures, the city of Waxahachie received its top nickname, “Gingerbread City”.

Waxahachie’s architectural legacy is so vast, it accounts for 20% of all the buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places in Texas. One of the most beautiful and famous historic buildings is the Historic Ellis County Courthouse.

During the month of June, Waxahachie holds the Gingerbread Trail Tour, in which participants visit private historic homes as well as historically recognized buildings including the Ellis County Courthouse, the Sims Library, and other museums.  Other activities include tea time for children, expositions, live music, food and much more with all proceeds benefitting the Ellis County Museum.

Parks, Museums, and Recreation

The city offers it residents and visitors a rich array of places to enjoy weekends and holidays for all ages and tastes. The following are just a few of the highlights:

  • There are several parks, including the Getzendaner Memorial Park, where healthy fun outdoor activities may be enjoyed such as picnicing, playing sports and hiking.

  • For the history buff, the Ellis County Museum is the perfect place to learn about the colorful past of this beautiful town.

  • Hearing the gospel has never been as fun as this!  Enjoy a unique spriritual experience at the biggest cowboy church in the world.  Historically big on spirituality, before the civil war, Waxahachie already had four churches in existence. Visitors can enjoy a casual, friendly and lively church experience at the non denominational Cowboy Church of Ellis County where jeans are the norm, baptisms are done in a horse trough and on site rodeos follow the worship service.

  • Lots of family fun awaits at the Madd Dogz Paintball Park or at the local bowling alley, Hill-Top Lanes where kids play free all summer through the month of October.  Where did I leave my bowling shoes?

Children’s Eye Health and Safety: Safeguard Your Child’s Eyesight

Children’s Eye Health and Safety: Warning Signs and Injury Prevention Tips

Now that our kiddos are back in school, they will be exposed to many new experiences.  It’s important to keep them safe during these years of exploration and formation to prevent potential injuries and health issues.  However, the subject of children’s eye and health safety usually does not get the importance that it deserves.  Most parents have a myriad of issues to worry about but do not think that their child could lose their eye sight.  Unfortunately, according to statistics, during the year 2015, a total of 61,739 children of school age up to 21 years old were reported to have sustained some type of vision loss by pertinent agencies including state departments of education.

Altus Emergency Centers is committed to educating our communities about children’s eye health in safety in order to recognize the warning signs of child vision loss and most importantly preventing it.

Children’s Eye Health and Safety:
Warning Signs

Very few people have 20/20 vision.  Many must use eye glasses, contact lenses or get eye surgery to correct their vision impairment.  However, if you do not practice proper children’s eye health and safety, a moderate vision issue can become more severe over time if left untreated.  If your child frequently displays the following signs it could signify they have a vision problem.

  • Rubs eyes frequently – complains of itchy, scratchy, or burning eyes

  • Closes or covers one eye

  • Tilts or thrusts head forward

  • Has trouble reading or doing close-up work

  • After performing some close-up task has a headache, feels sick, nauseated, or dizzy

  • Squints eyes or frowns frequently

  • They frequently complain that they are having problems understanding what their teacher writes on the classroom board.

Our interest in Children’s Eye Health and Safety coincides with the start of the new school year.  If you haven’t already, we recommend you have your child’s eyes thoroughly examined by a professional.

Vision plays an important role in a child’s development, and studies have put in evidence that vision problems can affect a child’s mental, physical, social, and learning abilities, this means that early detection and correction are imperative to the well-being of a child.

Children’s Eye Health and Safety: The most common eye problems in children

Amblyopia

Commonly known as lazy eye, it is the leading cause of decreased vision among children. The condition develops when nerve pathways between the brain and the eye aren’t properly stimulated during infancy. Treatment options may include eye patches, eye drops, eyeglasses, or contact lenses and in some cases surgery.

Strabismus

This condition is what we normally refer to as crossed eyes, a child with this condition will have eyes that do not line properly, there is no known cause for this condition but it is believed to be genetic. In most cases, strabismus can be corrected with the use of eyeglasses or surgery.

Refractive Errors

Refractive errors occur when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing directly on the retina. There are different types of refractive errors the most common in children are:

  • Myopia or nearsightedness: With this condition, objects that are close can be seen clearly, while objects that are far will seem blurry.

  • Hyperopia or farsightedness: In this case objects that are a certain distance away can be viewed clearly, while objects that are close by will be blurry. However, people experience farsightedness differently, some patients especially younger ones, may not notice any problems with their vision, while others with severe hyperopia will have blurry vision regardless of distance.

  • Astigmatism: This condition prevents the eye from evenly focusing light on the retina which is the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. As a result, vision will be blurry and may seem stretched out.

All refractive errors in children can be treated with the use of prescription eyeglasses, or contact lenses.

Preventing Eye Injuries

Children’s-Eye-Health-and-Safety-Preventing-Eye-Injuries

A major part of Children’s Eye Health and Safety is injury prevention.  Aside from the conditions mentioned, one of the leading causes of child vision loss is injuries. Most injuries occur at home, in the car, school or while playing outside. Experts believe that more than 90% of eye injuries sustained by children could have been prevented by the use of protective eyewear.

Here are some ways you can prevent eye injuries in kids.

  • Children who play sports like baseball, basketball, football, soccer, hockey, tennis or even paintball, should wear protective eye gear made from polycarbonate lenses.

  • Keep sprays and chemicals out of reach from small children.

  • Kids doing yard work or helping with house repairs or projects should also wear protective eyewear.

  • Avoid purchasing projectile style toys such as darts, or missile-firing toys.

  • Only purchase toys which are marked “ASTM”, this means the toy complies with the national safety standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials

  • Prevent your children from playing with BB guns, non-powder rifles, pellet guns, rockets, or fireworks.

Step to Take if an Eye Injury Occurs

What should I do if my child sustains an eye injury?

The eye is a particularly delicate organ.  Should your child suffer an eye injury, you should immediately transport him or her to the nearest Altus Emergency Center for treatment.

In addition, you should avoid doing the following:

  • Do not touch, rub, or apply pressure to the injured eye.

  • Do not attempt to remove any object that is currently stuck in the eye.

  • Do not apply any type of ointment or medication to the eye.

  • Cuts or puncture wounds should be gently covered, do not apply pressure.

  • In the event of a chemical exposure, rinse with water.

There is no need to call ahead of time when you are in route to our facilities, as there is minimal to no wait times at any of our ER centers.
