Dr. Suchmor Thomas, Altus Lake Jackson ER Medical Director

Introducing Dr. Suchmor Thomas, MD.

Lake Jackson’s New Medical Director

We are pleased to introduce Dr. Suchmor Thomas, MD, the new medical director for our Lake Jackson center.

For years, Altus Emergency Center Lake Jackson has been an intricate part of the community. We continuously try to improve the lives of the members of our community by partnering with various organizations.

Our goal has always been to provide the best care for our patients and to help advance our tightknit community.

We feel our recent changes in how we staff our Emergency Centers speaks volumes as to how much we want to make a difference in the lives of patients.

Direct Staffing

A few months back, Altus Emergency Centers made the bold decision to directly hire all the doctors that would work in our ER centers.

There were several reasons for this decision:

We understood that many of you had billing issues with the previous group. We now have more control from the billing. Our billing team located in the facility will now be taking care of the physicians’ bills.

We have better control to select the physicians we want working at the facility giving us more access to pick the best in the area.

We believe we have successfully accomplished all these goals. There are, however, a few issues we are dealing with, mostly regarding billing for services before our direct staffing took place.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Patient Advocate Can Help With Your Billing Issues

If you have questions regarding billing, especially for physician fees for services in our ER before June of 2019, please contact our Patient Advocate.

Our team of experts will work tirelessly to lower the amount of your bill. Additionally, they can help create a personalized payment plan that adjusts to your financial needs.

The Importance of Having an Experienced ER Doctor in Charge

Dr. Suchmor Thomas has vast experience working in the ER, which is one of the reasons we chose him for the position of medical director.

Working as an ER doctor requires much preparation, nerves of steel, as well as passion and dedication. ER physicians need to be able to make split-second life-saving decisions; this requires not only knowledge, excellent communication skills, and confidence.

All physicians working in our emergency centers have these qualities, which is why we knew our medical director must also have them. The choice to hire Dr. Thomas as our medical director came as a result of his preparation, excellent performance, and the respect he has earned from his peers in our ER.

We stole a few precious minutes out of the busy day of Dr. Thomas to get to know him better. We think he is a terrific individual and a gifted physician, but don’t take our word for it, read on to get to know him better.

Dr. Suchmor Thomas discusses the importance of time in an emergency

Q: Did you have a nickname growing up?

A: Dr. Thomas

“Sachin” – My parents and relatives call me that.

A: Dr. Thomas

I boarded in family medicine. However, I’ve worked in Emergency Medicine since my graduation in 2007.

Q: Why did you decide to go into emergency medicine?

A: Dr. Thomas

I love taking care of patients when they need the most when you have to make the most critical care decision for the patients. When every second, every minute count.

First Case of West Nile Virus Confirmed in Texas for 2019

Preventing Common Mosquito-Borne Illnesses Including the West Nile Virus

In a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Texas is in the top 20% of states when it comes to the number of people being infected by insect-borne diseases including those transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas.

The Texas Department of State Health Services recently confirmed the first human case of the West Nile Virus for 2019.

In a recent press release, the Texas DSHS confirmed the first case of West Nile disease reported by the El Paso Department of Public Health, “occurred in July in an adult resident of El Paso County. Additional cases reported by El Paso are likely to add to the total once they are reviewed by the state.” Source DSHS.

According to the Texas DSHS,

“There were 146 cases of West Nile disease, including 11 deaths, in Texas last year. Over the last five years, Texas has had 1,305 cases and 57 deaths. Mosquitoes remain active in much of Texas into November and December.

In this article, we will focus on mosquitoes as they affect the health of people and animals more than any other insect pest, and they are prevalent in urban areas meaning they can affect anyone of us.

Common Mosquito-Borne Diseases in Texas

Mosquito populations exist throughout the state, and unfortunately, our area is no exception. Thankfully, not all species of mosquitoes are disease vectors or carriers; however, carrier species of illnesses like West Nile Virus, Dengue Fever, Chikungunya Virus, and Zika Virus are known to live in Texas.

West Nile Virus

“DSHS urges people with West Nile symptoms to contact their health care provider and mention any exposure to mosquitoes.”

The carrier of West Nile Virus (WNV) in urban Texas areas is the southern house mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus). Two forms of the virus can affect humans:

West Nile Fever (WNF): Symptoms include: fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, back pain, muscle aches, decreased appetite, fever, and about 20-50% of patients develop a rash on their arms, chest, and back.

West Nile Neuroinvasive Disease (WNND): Early symptoms are like those of WNF but don’t include the rash. This type of virus is much more severe because it affects the nervous system and patients can develop encephalitis, meningitis, weakness, or muscle paralysis (commonly on one side of the body), inflammation of the lining of the retina, or a combination of these.

This form of the virus requires medical attention as it can be fatal if not treated properly.

Additional information on West Nile surveillance and a link to current human case counts are available at TxWestNile.org.

Dengue, also known as break-bone fever can be a severe but rarely fatal disease, the more serious manifestations of it are known as dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. It is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, and symptoms include:

  • Sudden onset of high fever
  • A severe headache
  • Severe back pain
  • Severe joint pains
  • A rash that appears on the third or fourth day of the illness

Chikungunya Virus

This virus is transmitted by two types of mosquitoes the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Symptoms include:

  • Severe fever
  • Incapacitating arthritic joint pain

Symptoms typically disappear in 7-10 days, but the pain can linger for years after the infection has cleared.

Chikungunya Symptoms

Zika Virus

The Zika virus is transmitted to humans mostly by the bite of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes; however, infected humans can spread the disease through sexual intercourse, blood transfusions, mother to unborn child, and during birth.

Not all patients will develop symptoms, those who do are usually mild and include:

  • Fever
  • Skin rash
  • Red eyes or conjunctivitis
  • Joint pain

The real danger of contracting the Zika virus is for pregnant women, as it has been linked to cases of microcephaly when contracted during the first trimester of pregnancy. Microcephaly is a medical condition in newborns, that results in an unusually small head because the brain stopped growing or did not develop properly.

Stop Mosquitoes in Their Tracks

The best way to avoid becoming infected by a mosquito-borne disease is to stay clear away from mosquitoes, now, this might be easier said than done as those pesky little flying creatures seem to be everywhere this time of year, but, there are some ways to stop mosquitoes in their tracks.

  • Wear EPA-approved insect repellent
  • Wear lightweight and loose fitting long sleeve shirts and pants when you are outdoors
  • Avoid black or dark clothing, strangely enough, it seems mosquitoes love black
  • Mount screens on all your doors and windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home
  • Use mosquito nets over cribs to protect babies especially those younger than two months

  • Remove any standing water in and around your house
  • Cover trash cans or containers where water can collect
  • Avoid foods like avocados, bananas, and dry foods during your cookouts, mosquitoes are attracted to foods that are high in salt and potassium. If you must have guacamole at your backyard party, keep it covered as much as possible.
  • Turn on the fan, mosquitoes have a low fly range, windy conditions make it difficult for them to navigate so they will shy away from any windy areas.

Risk of Long ER Wait Times

Risk of Long ER Wait Times

Nobody likes to wait but waiting when you are sick or in pain is worse, and frankly, for us, it’s unacceptable.

At Altus Emergency Centers, we know firsthand how pain and fear can affect patients and their families. That is why we always strive to find better ways to improve our response times.

These are some of our most recent improvements:

Online Check-In

You can complete the simple form while you are on your way to our nearest center.

The online check-in offers many benefits:

  • It alerts our staff you are coming so we will be waiting for you at the door
  • It helps cut our response time significantly which is vital for critical patients
  • Our administrative staff and Patient Advocate can start the insurance paperwork ahead of time so you can go home faster

In-House Doctors

We are very excited about this recent change. Altus Emergency Centers has broken with tradition and decided to do things better by hiring doctors directly.

Having in-house physicians working around the clock has not only improved how fast we can treat patients, it has also it has allowed us to improve our quality of care.

How Risky Are ER Wait Times?

The overcrowding crisis of hospital-based ER’s is an undeniable threat to public health.

There have been many studies regarding the effects of long wait times in the ER to patient outcomes.

One study found that patients who visited the ER and encountered long wait times were more likely to die or require hospitalization after they left the ER.

Additionally, research from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality linked ER overcrowding with more frequent medication errors. Meaning patients either got the wrong medication or the wrong dose. The study also found that when hospital ER’s are overcrowded, more patients did not receive their medicine when needed.

What Causes Hospital-Based ER Overcrowding?

risk of long er wait times hospital overcrowding

Understanding what causes a problem is usually the first step in finding a solution to it. In the case of ER overcrowding, the answer is not always clear.

Many reasons can cause a hospital ER to become overcrowded:

  • A big accident brought in too many patients at once
  • The ER is understaffed

There are patients in the ER that need hospitalization, but the hospital doesn’t have room for them. When this happens, patients must stay in the ER until the hospital can take them in; this means there are fewer beds available in the ER.

How Long Will You Have to Wait in the ER?

Waiting in the ER can be distressing, not only for patients who under the best circumstances are in a lot of pain and at worst are fighting for their lives. It is also stressful for family members.

ER doctors and nurses also feel the pressure to see more patients, and this can result in lower quality of care.

According to the latest data from Pro Publica, the average wait time for a patient to see a doctor in a hospital-based ER is 18 minutes. On average, it takes 132 minutes from the time the patient first enters the ER to the time they get to go home.

By comparison, patients who visit an Altus Emergency Center can expect to be on their way home within 90 minutes. How do we achieve this?

  • It takes only 6 minutes for one of our registered nurses to evaluate a patient
  • Non-critical patients will get to see a doctor within 15 minutes after arrival. Critical patients receive immediate medical attention.

Thanks to our onsite laboratory and diagnostic imaging, on average, our doctors can have a final diagnosis within 79 minutes.
