Danger on the Road – Traffic Accident Statistics

With nearly 264 million vehicles registered and over 218 million individuals with a valid driving license, our roads are some of the busiest in the world. This, unfortunately, means traffic accidents are more common than any of us would like.

Annual Car Accidents in The United States

Every year the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issues a briefing based on reported car accidents nationwide. The NHTSA keeps track of injuries, fatalities as well as the factors that might have contributed to the crash such as speeding, alcohol, and distractions.

From these reports we can gather the following statistics:

car accident

The Impact of Motor Vehicle Accidents in Texas

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the state of Texas has the most traffic fatalities of any state in the country.

car accident trauma emergency

Most Common Causes of Traffic Accidents

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is the leading cause of road accidents in America. Drivers can become distracted by several things while driving:

  • Cell phones
  • Eating
  • Drinking from a mug or bottle
  • Talking
  • Children
  • Pets in the car

Not paying attention to the road while driving can have dire consequences; the NHTSA reports 3,142 fatalities in distraction-affection crashes in 2019. There were also an estimated 697 deaths due to drowsy driving during the same year. Source: NHTSA.

In addition to these tragic deaths, thousands of victims who experience long-term disabilities.

Speeding

The second most common cause of road accidents in the United States is speeding, and because most of these accidents typically occur at high speeds, it is also a significant cause of traffic accident-related deaths with an estimated 9,478 deaths in 2019.  Source: nsc.org

Drunk Driving

Road accidents involving drunk drivers are another major cause of injuries and fatalities, especially during the weekend and holidays. Drinking slows down our response time and our ability to focus on the road, and it can also make us drowsy.

According to data from the NHTSA,

“29% of the total fatalities of road accidents were in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes.”

In our own state of Texas:

Out of the 3,722 road accident deaths in 2017, 1,468 or 39% of them occurred in an accident caused by a drunk driver.

Getting Prompt Medical Attention Can Help Save A Life

According to the CDC for every person killed in a road accident,

“8 were hospitalized, and 100 were treated and released from the Emergency Room.”

Anyone who is involved in a severe motor vehicle accident should be taken to the nearest Emergency Room for evaluation, given that some injuries can only be diagnosed with advanced imagining technology.

During a crash, victims might have suffered internal injuries or head trauma that if not treated promptly can lead to long-term disabilities or even death.

Some injuries are more time-sensitive than others, in these cases it is better to transfer the patient to a Free-Standing ER facility such as any of the Altus Emergency Centers where they can be treated by a licensed emergency physician right away, rather than transport them to a Hospital ER where their treatment might be delayed due to overcrowding issues.

It’s important to remember that insurance companies are obligated to offer emergency room coverage in their policies. If you are involved in a car accident and need to go to the emergency room, your insurance policy will cover your visit.

Healthcare Facility for Holiday Emergencies. Where to Go

Looking for a Healthcare Facility for Holiday Emergencies? Where to Go.

The Holiday Season is supposed to be a time of joy and cheerful communion with family and friends. But all this excitement can sometimes lead to accidents and unexpected health issues.

We know the last thing on your holiday checklist is planning for such events, but should you need medical care during the holidays, do you know where to go?

Where to Get Help When You Have a Medical Emergency?

Choosing the right healthcare facility for holiday emergencies is vital if you want a speedy recovery. But deciding where to get the best treatment for your injuries can sometimes be confusing.

Not worry; we are here to help you plan and know where to go to get in and out quickly so you can get back to enjoying your holiday season.

Here we will explain the differences between Urgent Care, Hospital ER’s, and stand-alone Emergency Rooms.

Urgent Care

These facilities offer convenient locations and are a good option for mild illness symptoms and minor injuries.

However, these centers rarely have a doctor on-site, and most are not open 24/7. Many may even be closed during holidays. Also, their level of care is limited. So if your injury or illness turns out to be more severe than you initially thought, they won’t be able to treat you. Instead, they will recommend you visit a higher level of care facility such as the emergency room.

If they refer you to a hospital ER, not only will you waste time getting there, you may also experience long wait times to be seen by a doctor. Therefore, if the UC refers you to the ER during the holidays, it’s best to choose a freestanding emergency room where you can get treated and discharged faster.

example of an urgent care

Hospital Emergency Room

There is no question that a hospital-based emergency room is well-equipped to treat all types of emergencies with the added advantage that they are open 24/7. But, unfortunately, overcrowding and long wait times are a reality for most hospital ER’s.

On average, hospital ER patients wait more than an hour and a half to be taken to their room and 2.25 hours before discharge.

During the holidays, these wait times are sure to increase, leaving you with less time to spend with your family and recover comfortably at home.

example of a hospital emergency room

Independent/Freestanding Emergency Room

Your search for a healthcare facility for holiday emergencies is over!

A freestanding emergency room (FER or FEC), also called stand-alone ER or independent ER, is open 24/7, offers immediate treatment, and is well equipped to handle a wide variety of emergencies.

A freestanding ER has all the diagnostic equipment for doctors to identify the type and severity of your injuries. Diagnostic equipment includes X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, and clinical laboratory. Additionally, they have qualified doctors and nurses certified in emergency care, meaning you are always in good hands.

Best of all, wait times at independent emergency rooms like Altus are considerably lower. Within minutes of your arrival, one of our nurses will be assessing your injuries, and you will see a doctor within 10-15 after you arrive.

Because Altus ER’s don’t suffer from the same overcrowding issues as hospital ER’s, you will always receive faster, more personalized care from us.

At Altus Emergency Centers, we provide patients with online check-in options to make wait time even shorter. And we also provide them with free medical screening.

Contrary to many reports, Altus Emergency Centers are not more expensive than a hospital ER. In fact, we have negotiated special rates with our in-house doctors to ensure you receive the best care at the best price.

Additionally, our patient advocate will help you understand and maximize your health insurance benefits. They will make sure you never pay more for out-of-pocket expenses than you should.

Choosing Your Healthcare Plan Wisely

What to Ask When Choosing Your Healthcare Plan

The 2022 open enrollment period opened on November 1st and ends on December 15th, 2021, this means that many of us are actively shopping for the health care plan that bests suits our needs and budget.

To get the most out of our medical insurance plans, we must understand how the plans work, and what they cover. State and Federal insurance laws obligate insurers to include certain benefits and provide certain protections; however, insurers offer different plans from which you can choose, some will provide more coverage and protection than others, but this usually means the extra coverage comes at a price.

When you are shopping for healthcare coverage, insurance companies will provide a summary of each of their plans, this information will help you choose the right plan for you and your family. But, keep in mind the insurers won’t provide all the details of the plan until you have enrolled in the plan.

healthcare-plan

What is a Healthcare Policy?

For all intent and purposes, a health care policy is a legal contract between you and the health insurance company or health maintenance organization (HMO). When you enroll in a program, the insurance company or HMO will provide a copy of the contract, this will give detailed information about what your rights and responsibilities are under the plan.

For more information on the types of plans offered in Texas, please visit the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI)

healthcare insurance

Can I Cancel the Plan If I am Not Satisfied with the Coverage?

Yes, when you receive your copy of the policy detailing all the benefits, it is essential you read it carefully, especially if you have any special health needs. This will be the first time you are seeing the details of the coverage you will receive, and it’s important for you to know that if you are not satisfied with the policy, you have 10 days to return it and get a refund of your premium.

What is the Best Way to Compare Plans?

When you are shopping for medical insurance, ask the provider for their summary of benefits and coverage. This is the best way for you to compare healthcare plans as this document uses a standardized format making it easier to compare one item to another.

This summary outlines the basic coverage and cost of the plan you are interested in and will include the following:

  • Benefits and Exclusions
  • Links to Your Preferred Provider Directory and Drug Formulary
  • Deductible Amount
  • Coinsurance and Copayment Amounts
  • Out-of-Pocket limits
  • Referral Requirements

Always Ask About Emergency Medical Coverage

State and Federal laws obligate insurance companies to include Emergency Medical coverage in their policies. However, as we mentioned before, how much is covered can change from one plan to the next. As of August 6th, 2018, the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) approved a controversial new program which grants the largest Health Insurance company in Texas to deny payments for some ER visits. Therefore, it is crucial to ask how your plan will process emergency medical treatment and ER visits before you enroll.

Can You Appeal a Deny of Payment on ER Treatments?

Absolutely, every consumer has the right to appeal the insurance company’s decision to not pay for treatment received in the ER.

According to the TDI, they received assurances from the insurance company that patients will have the right to have their doctor debate the treatment plan provided with the insurer doctor before a denial of payment was issued, and patients will be able to appeal the denial with an independent review organization.

Altus Emergency Center’s Patient Advocate department is available to patients review their health insurance claims and to aid in the event of an appeal of payment denial. Our priority is and always been the wellbeing of our patients, and our doctors follow care protocols to ensure the best medical care is provided.

COVID-19, Common Cold or The Flu? How to Tell the Difference

COVID-19, Common Cold or The Flu? How to Tell the Difference

As COVID-19 continues to disrupt our lives, many of us are feeling on edge, and the slightest symptom makes us wonder if we’ve contracted COVID-19.

The common cold, the flu, and COVID-19 are all respiratory illnesses caused by viruses, and some of the symptoms can be very similar. So how do you know which one you have?

Here, we will show the differences so you can know when you need to seek medical help.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

What Causes the Common Cold, The Flu, And COVID-19

The first similarity between all these illnesses is that they are all caused by viruses.

Common Cold: The reason we call colds the common cold is that numerous viruses can cause it making it an easy illness to get.

Some of the viruses responsible for the common cold include:

  • The rhinovirus
  • Human parainfluenza
  • Respiratory syncytial virus
  • Various coronaviruses – But not the one that causes COVID-19

Viruses, including the coronaviruses responsible for the common cold, produce mild symptoms that include a stuffy nose, sore throat, and headaches.

The Flu: The influenza virus is what causes the flu. There are many variations of the influenza virus, all of which can cause seasonal viral respiratory infections in your nose, throat, and lungs.

For most, the flu causes mild to moderate symptoms that resolve themselves in two weeks or less. However, some patients can develop serious complications that result in pneumonia and possibly death.

COVID-19: The strain of coronavirus responsible for the illness, is known as COVID-19. Scientists have named this new strain the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2  or SARS-CoV-2.

The symptoms of the SARS-CoV-2 virus are much more severe, resulting in high persistent fevers, cough, trouble breathing, pneumonia, kidney failure, and even death.

Comparing the Symptoms of the Common Cold, The Flu, and COVID-19

The following symptom chart can help you decide if you have a common cold, the flu, or COVID-19. This list of symptoms, however, is not definitive and should only be used as a guide. If you suspect you have COVID-19, please call your doctor or visit one of our centers as soon as possible.

COVID-19 Common Cold or The Flu

How Can You Be Sure if Your Symptoms Are Those of COVID-19?

Because symptoms of the common cold, the flu, and COVID-19 can overlap, it can be challenging to know when you should worry, and when you shouldn’t.

If you do have COVID-19, prompt diagnosis and treatment can help lower your risk of developing complications.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers a COVID-19 self-checker to help you know when to seek medical attention.

If your self-assessment indicates, a doctor should examine you, call the nearest Altus Emergency Center or use our online check-in form. You will receive a free medical evaluation, and you decide when and where to get tested should you need to.

National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month

National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month

October is National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month (NMAAM). This annual campaign aims to raise the public’s awareness of the dangers of prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse.

Most of us know of the growing drug problem in our communities. But most of us aren’t aware that the fastest-growing drug problem in America isn’t heroin, cocaine, or methamphetamines, its prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

How Big is The Problem?

Most people take prescription medication responsibly; however, there is a growing trend, especially among adolescents and young adults that are misusing prescription drugs.

According to estimates from The National Institute on Drug Abuse:

  • 18 million people have misused prescription medications at least once in the last 12 months
  • 2 million Americans misused prescription pain relievers for the first time within the past year
  • More than 1 million misused prescription stimulants
  • Some 1.5 million misused tranquilizers

  • And, 5,175 Americans died from antidepressant overdose
National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month

Why Is National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month So Important This Year?

The reasons why people misuse or abuse prescription and over-the-counter medication vary. In most cases, easy access to these medications topped the list of reasons.

Other reasons include misinformation on how addictive opioid medications are and the perception that prescription medications are safer and less harmful or addictive than illegal drugs.

The challenges we’ve had to face this year due to the public health care crisis mean many of us are suffering from the effects of extreme stress and anxiety.

Prolonged stress affects every aspect of our lives, from our emotions, behaviors, how we think, and of course, our physical health.

Stress can contribute to the misuse of prescription and over-the-counter medications to try and eliminate or decrease the severity of symptoms such as insomnia, depression, anxiety, and pain.

That is why at Altus Emergency Centers, we are working to raise awareness of the dangers of medicine abuse.

Preventing Medicine Abuse

These are some ways we can help prevent accidental or deliberate prescription drug overdoses in our home.

Don’t Hoard Medications and Keep Them Out of Children’s Reach

Many of us are guilty of saving unused medications in our medicine cabinet, yet this habit can have dire consequences.

Hoarding medications at home increases the risk of taking expired medications, which can have serious side effects.

Prescription drug addiction among children is growing. Make sure you speak to your kids about the dangers of taking drugs, even prescription drugs for non-medical purposes.

It would be best if you disposed of your unused medicines through drug take-back programs. Ask your pharmacist if they have such a plan in place.

Only Take Medication as Prescribed and Never Self-Medicate

It’s critical to adhere to your doctor’s instructions when taking prescription medications. For over-the-counter medicines, you should always follow the indications of the manufacturer.

The one thing you should avoid is self-medicating. If you feel unwell, call your doctor, visit our ER, or speak to your pharmacist or another trained medical professional. Don’t take medications based on friends or family’s suggestions and avoid miracle cures advertised on websites.

Look for Alternatives When Possible

If you feel stressed, anxious, or experiencing pain, rather than reach for the medicine cabinet several times a day, try to find alternative ways to deal with your situation.

Join a support group at your local church or speak to a friend about how you feel. Try getting a massage or do stretching exercises every day to help ease your pain.

What to Do In Case of an Accidental Overdose

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accidental overdoses are a leading cause of death among people between 35 and 54.

A drug overdose occurs when we take too much over-the-counter medicine or prescription medication. It can also happen if we take several prescription or over-the-counter drugs at the same time or if we combine them with alcohol.

Symptoms of an overdose can range from mild to life-threatening. Mild symptoms include slurred speech, drowsiness, and unsteadiness.

Severe and life-threatening symptoms require immediate medical attention. Call 911 and ask to be taken to the nearest Altus Emergency Center if you notice the following symptoms:

  • Breathing problems
  • Hallucinations
  • Delusions
  • Seizures
  • Tremors
  • Vomiting
  • Unconsciousness

Tips for a Safe Halloween

Tips for a Safe Halloween in 2021

We are so excited to have Halloween just around the corner!  During 2021, we have been blessed by having access to the vaccine for COVID-19.  While this has helped open up our social bubbles a bit more, we still should always keep in mind these commonsense tips for a safe Halloween.

So how can we celebrate Halloween safely?

Tips for a Safe Halloween

While last year, some counties banned door-to-door trick or treating over safety concerns. Others are strongly recommended that you skip the activity.  This year, CDC director, Rochelle Walensky, stated:

“I certainly hope so,” Walensky said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” when asked whether it’s safe for children to go trick-or-treating this year. “If you’re able to be outdoors, absolutely,” she said.

The head of the CDC also recommended that parents and kids “limit crowds” on Halloween.

“I wouldn’t necessarily go to a crowded Halloween party, but I think that we should be able to let our kids go trick-or-treating in small groups,” Walensky said. “I hope that we can do that this year.”

So, the first thing you should do is to keep in mind the standard recommended safety guidelines.

Trick-or-treating is an outdoor activity and, therefore, safer as you have some control when it comes to physical distancing. An added plus is you can work in a fun face mask into your child’s costume.

If you decide to trick or treat this year, here are some tips to protect your family from COVID-19

  1. Don’t replace your face covering with a Halloween mask. Specially made fabric or surgical masks work better at preventing the spread of the virus. Most of the materials used in Halloween masks are not be enough to prevent viral transmission.
  2. Parents should line their children and only have one child at the door at a time. By avoiding gatherings at your neighbor’s door, you can help keep everyone safe
  3. Local health authorities recommend you stay close to home and keep your trick or treating party small. You should avoid going to neighborhoods where you are not sure how the virus is spreading
  4. Encourage children to bring hand sanitizer and use it frequently as they are more likely to touch their face while adjusting their costume
  5. Once you arrive home, the first thing to do is have everyone wash their hands with soap and water
  6. Don’t let your children eat any of the treats before you get home. Their hands may be dirty, and this increased their risk of getting sick not only with COVID-19 but also with the flu or stomach

General Safety Tips for Trick Or Treating

If your child has an allergic reaction, please don’t hesitate, bring them to the nearest Altus Emergency Center as soon as possible.

Halloween is a fun time for everyone in the family. Even though we may need to celebrate differently this year, Halloween can still be a joyous occasion if we follow the safety recommendations.

Although COVID-19 is on everyone’s mind these days, it is not the only health concern this time of year. Flu season is about to start, and if not treated, it could cause severe illness and complications.

If you or your child are not feeling well, it’s best to stay home. If you notice symptoms are getting worse, visit the nearest Altus Emergency Center, so our doctors can evaluate your symptoms and help you recover.
