Texas Parks to Visit and Recreation Safety Tips to Enjoy

Texas Parks to Visit and Recreation Safety Tips to Enjoy

Let’s Learn About Park and Recreation Safety

In celebration of National Parks and Recreation Month, Altus Emergency Centers is challenging the community to improve their quality of life by going out and enjoying one of the many parks around their city. The best way to plan out a great time outdoors is to first learn about park and recreation safety.

Spending time outdoors promotes a healthy vibrant community life, whether it’s summer camp, a sports league, exploring a trail, playing chess in the park, or organizing play dates for the kids; parks are the perfect gathering place.

To ensure you experience a safe outing, we have prepared a handy list of Park and Recreation Safety Tips to keep in mind!

National Parks & Recreation Month: Keeping it Safe and Fun

Playground Safety Tips.

The most common summer activity is a trip to the playground.  The following park and recreation safety tips are important to keep in mind during your visit the the playground:

  • Wear Proper Shoes: Make sure your kids footwear is adequate to play and run, never let your child play barefoot at the park as they may be bitten by insects, step on a thorn or small rock or burn their feet on hot surfaces.
  • Watch Out for Hot Surfaces: During summer, slides, swings, monkey bars, merry-go-rounds and even picnic tables may become overheated by the sun, so, always check the surface temperature.
  • Stranger Danger: Teach your children not to speak or follow adult strangers, and to immediately run towards you or someone they know to report the incident. While not everyone has bad intentions, it is best for kids not to engage in conversation with adults they do not know.

Hiking Safety Tips

Hiking is an excellent acivity for all ages.  You may choose the pace and distance that you wish to hike and enjoy the scenery during your voyage. The following park and recreation safety tips are important to keep in mind when planning on your next hiking quest:

  • Tell People: Always inform friends and family the route you’ll be taking and how long you expect to be gone; if possible always travel with a companion.
  • Carry ID: Make sure to carry some sort of ID that includes your name, phone number, address, pertinent medical information, and emergency contact information.
  • Carry a Whistle: This will help scare wild animals or signal for help should you be injured.
  • Plan Your Route: Become familiarized with a trail before you head out, do not venture into unknown hiking trails by yourself.

Camping Safety Tips

If you’re a woodsy person at heart, camping is wonderful to replenish the mind and spirit.  It is particulary important to heed the park and recreation safety tips while on your home in the wilderness away from home.

  • Stay Away from Wildlife: Clearly one of the joys of camping is to commune with nature, but, it is better to enjoy the wildlife from afar. If you do come face to face with a wild animal, regardless of if it’s a bear or a squirrel do your best not to disturb them, this will keep you out of trouble and possibly a visit to one of our centers.
  • Respect the Fire Rules of the Park: Most parks that offer camping sites have clear rules when it comes to camp fires, make sure you find out what they are and that you respect them. Unattended or poorly managed campfires have been known to start wildfires that can destroy thousands of acres, kill wildlife, and endanger human population as well.
  • Store Food Carefully: Again, check the food regulations with park officials before you set out on your camping trip. Food should be properly stored for several reasons, preventing food poisoning while camping and, avoiding a close encounter with dangerous animals.

General Park Safety Tips

No matter which outdoor activity is your cup of tea, the following are universal park and recreation safety tips to always take into consideration:

  • Wear Sunscreen: We cannot stress the importance of sunscreen enough, make sure to reapply every couple of hours to avoid getting sunburned.
  • Stay Hydrated: Carry a water bottle, and, if you plan to go for a hike, make sure to take snacks along with you.
  • Check for Ticks: Lyme Disease is a serious illness, it can be easily treated when diagnosed early, but, if left untreated, it can linger for years and cause serious side effects. After a day at the park, make sure you check yourself and your family for ticks.
  • Watch Out for Poisonous Plants: Learn to identify the different poisonous plants that grow in these parts, poison ivy and poison sumac can both cause nasty rashes just by touching them, but poison hemlock can actually kill you. If you come in contact with any of these plants head to the nearest Altus Emergency Center for treatment, if possible take a picture of the plant so we can identify it and administer the proper treatment.

How to Prevent Golfing Injuries

How to Prevent Golfing Injuries

Learn How to Prevent Golfing Injuries so you can “Tee it High, and Let it Fly Safely!”

Playing golf with the family is the perfect vacation or weekend activity, best of all you don’t need to travel far to enjoy a day at the golf course.

Like with any sport, there is a risk of injury when you play golf, the little ones and less experienced players are the ones who run the biggest risk of being injured mainly due to bad posture. To ensure everyone in the family enjoys this great sport safely, we have put together a list of most common golfing injuries and how to prevent them.

Most Common Golfing Injuries

Back Pain

Back pain is at the top of our golfing injuries as according to the American Chiropractic Association, “80% of adults in America will suffer from back pain at some point or another in their lives.” The long hours hunched over your club along with the rotational stresses of the swing, can place considerable pressure on your spine and muscles, leading to minor strains that can easily become severe injuries. The most common type of back pain is lower back pain, however, many golfers experience stabbing pain between their shoulder blades.

Tendinitis in the Elbow

Another one of the golfing injuries, tendinitis, is a condition where tendon tissue becomes irritated and inflamed. There are two common types of elbow tendinitis:

  • Tennis Elbow: Occurs when there is an injury to the outer tendon.
  • Golfer’s Elbow: When the injury presents itself on the inner tendon.

Ironically, golfers are more prone to suffer from tennis elbow than from golfer’s elbow.

Rotator Cuff Injury

The rotator cuffs are the four stabilizing muscles located on each shoulder; golfers can easily develop tendinitis, bursitis, and tears in the rotator cuff due to the repetitive motion of the golf swing.

There are two types of rotator cuff golfing injuries, both can cause pain and inhibit your game:

  • Rotator cuff impingements: Occurs when the tendons swell and pinch the space between the arm and the bones in the shoulder.
  • Rotator Cuff Tear: this happens when there are tears in the shoulder muscle and tendons.

Knee Pain and Damage

Golfers commonly complain from knee pain due to the strain placed on it to stabilize the rotation of the hip axis at the beginning of the swing. Torn ligaments can be a result of placing extreme force on a weak knee, and knee injuries are especially problematic for arthritis sufferers given the degenerative nature of the disease which can gradually wear down the joint cartilage.

Hip Injuries

Although the hip joint is usually very mobile and able to withstand a lot of stress, it is particularly vulnerable when playing golf since the swing involves a large amount of pivoting and twisting movements. The hip joint resembles the shoulder joint or rotator cuff so the injuries sustained at the hip are very similar to the tears experienced at the shoulders.

Tips to Prevent Golfing Injuries

TIP #1: Practice correct form and work on your swing.

According to the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine increasing the range of motion of lumbar spine extension and rotation of the lead hip can prevent one of the most common golfing injuries, lower back pain.

TIP #2: Warm up.

Before you tee off, take a few minutes to stretch your shoulder, back, arm and leg muscles, and if possible, go to the driving range and hit a few balls. This will not only help warm up it can seriously improve your game.

TIP #3: Exercise.

It is important to strengthen the muscles of your back, focus on the trapezoid and pectoral as well as your core. Flexibility exercises like yoga and Pilates also help in preventing back, shoulder and knee injuries.

TIP #4: Have someone else carry your bag.

Paying for a caddy is a good investment, carrying your golf bag across the entire course can increase your risk of back and ankle injuries.

TIP #5: Avoid hitting objects other than the ball.

Hitting the ground or a root instead of the ball can result in an injury, the sheer force of the swing coming to a hard stop can cause injury to your back, wrist, and shoulder.

TIP #6: Choose proper footware and clothing.

Your clothing should be comfortable and suitable to protect you from the elements, remember to wear sunscreen and shades always. Wear golf shoes with short cleats, longer cleats will dig into the soil and hold your feet planted as you swing which may cause knee and ankle injuries.

Men’s Health Quotes from Altus

Life Lessons From the Healthy Men of Altus

Men’s Health Quotes from Altus

In honor of Men’s Health Month, we’d like to introduce you to three of the gentlemen from Altus.  At Altus Emergency, Altus Baytown ER and Altus Lumberton Hospital, we not only care about the healthcare of our communities, we try to be an example of health and wellness.  The following are some heart-felt testimonies about how these dedicated Altus staff feel about Men’s Health.

“Being a man is a tough job. Working on your spiritual, emotional, mental and physical health is important to be the best man you can for your family, friends and job. My journey started with Obi taking me to the gym. I remember how sore I was after that first workout! I quickly realized I need a professional personal trainer so I hired Travis. Although he thought I would not last 2 weeks, I am still at it all these years later. Running was always my primary workout, then slowly working out in the gym. I trained for my first marathon several years ago and now enjoy running for the enjoyment. When asked about getting into shape, I always say it is literally one step in front of the other. Start slow and build over time. You will never regret having a workout program. You will only regret never starting.”

“I work out to keep up with my 3 year old. Staying fit is a way of life!”

Vice President of Business Development and Marketing Strategy

“I like to keep myself in good shape shape, but i workout more so to keep myself sane. Working out and staying in shape is more mental for me than physical. some days you just don’t want to show up, but mentally you have to push past that. At the end of the day, your health and the health of those around you should be the most important things, so why question taking care of them?”

Most Common Food Allergies

Most Common Food Allergies

It is vital to get to the the most common food allergies to help avoid an emergency.  When we think about food allergies, we tend to limit them to peanuts, shellfish, and gluten, however, there is a long list of food allergy triggers, and because symptoms tend to mild in most cases you may not know you are experiencing an allergic reaction.

Food allergies are a lot more common than we think, this condition affects some 15 million Americans especially children, according to statistics 1 in every 13 kids in America has a food allergy, and every 3 minutes a food allergy reaction sends someone to the emergency room.

As part of Altus Emergency Center’s educational efforts during Food Allergy Action Month, we have compiled a list of the most common food allergies and their symptoms, to help you recognize this potentially deadly condition.

What are Food Allergies

Like other allergic reactions, food allergies are an abnormal immune response; they happen when the immune system wrongfully identify certain proteins found in food as harmful.

The severity of the allergic reaction ranges from mild symptoms to life-threatening ones, and it can be triggered even by very small amounts of the problem food.

In most instances, the symptoms of an allergic reaction happen a few minutes after exposure, but they can also manifest a few hours later, the most common allergic reaction symptoms include:

  • – Swelling of tongue, mouth, or face
  • – Itchy rash
  • – Hives
  • – Difficulty breathing
  • – Low blood pressure
  • – Nausea and vomiting
  • – Diarrhea
Common Food Allergies-Altus-ER

Most Common Food Allergies

Because symptoms can manifest hours after the exposure, sometimes the cause of the allergic reaction is not easily recognized, and if the symptoms are mild most people may ignore them.

The following list includes the most common food allergies, however, there are many more triggers, if you suspect you may have a food allergy, schedule an appointment with a specialist to determine which foods are harmful to you.

Peanut Allergy

Peanuts are one of the food allergens most commonly associated with anaphylaxis, a sudden and potentially deadly condition that requires immediate emergency medical treatment.

Allergic reactions to peanuts are one of the most common and deadly food allergies, it affects 1 in every 500 individuals and is responsible for more than half of all deaths from food-related allergic reactions.

Symptoms

  • – Itchy skin or hives that can show in small spots or large welts
  • – Itchy or tingling sensation in the mouth or throat
  • – Nausea

Symptoms include

– Hives and Skin Rash

– Stomach cramps, nausea, indigestion, vomiting, or diarrhea

– Stuffy or runny nose

– Headaches

– Asthma

– Anaphylaxis in severe cases

-And in very rare cases anaphylaxis

abdominal-pain-and-cramps

Flood Safety Tips

Flood Safety Tips.  Protect Yourself During and After a Flood.

Water is a source of life; however, during a flood that same water can be deadly. According to the CDC’s website, more deaths occur due to flooding than any other storm-related hazard.

Mother nature is unpredictable, but there are ways to protect yourself and those you love during a flood.

What to Do During a Flood?

The real danger starts once the floodwaters have risen. To protect yourself, please remember:

  • Not to drive through flooded areas or standing water. You don’t know how deep the water is and it’s important to realize you could lose control of your vehicle in as little as 6-inches of water
  • Don’t use flood water for bathing, brushing your teeth, washing or prepare foods, or wash dishes. Under no circumstance should drink flood water as it is most likely contaminated
  • Only drink water from the faucet after your local authorities have said it is safe to drink.
  • During a water advisory, you should only drink bottled. For cooking only use bottled, boiled, or treated water
  • If any of your food supplies come in contact with floodwaters, don’t eat them
  • If you are using a generator, make sure to place them at least 20-feet from any windows, doors, or vents to prevent accidental carbon monoxide poisoning

Flood Cleanup Tips

The cleanup process is perhaps where most flood-related injuries and illnesses occur. Infectious organisms might have contaminated floodwaters. The most common microorganisms found in standing floodwaters are:

  • coli
  • Salmonella
  • Shigella
  • Hepatitis A virus
  • Agents of typhoid
  • Paratyphoid
  • Tetanus

Floodwaters could also be contaminated by hazardous agricultural, industrial, or petrochemical components.

To help keep you safe, the staff of Altus Emergency Centers in Lumberton has several health-related tips to share with you:

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Keep Children Safe

During the cleanup process, keep a close eye on your kids.

  • Don’t let them play in or near floodwater
  • Make sure they wash their hands often or at the very least before each meal
  • Disinfect toys by soaking them in a solution made from 2-ounces of bleach per 1-gallon of water, let toys air dry after you have disinfected them
  • Throw away any stuffed or soft toys that may have been contaminated by the floodwaters

Food Safety

If you have power or are using a generator to power your appliances, then keep your refrigerator as close to 41°F as possible. If your electricity is out, you should know that your refrigerator will only keep your food cold for four or six hours if left unopened.

Additionally:

  • Without power, your freezer will keep your food frozen for one day or two days maximum if left unopened
  • Canned foods are safe to eat. However, you should remove the labels and wash the sealed cans with either warm water and detergent or a mixture made from 1-tablespoon of bleach per 1-gallon of water. You can relabel the cans after washing them
  • Throw away any canned food if you notice the can is rusted, pitted, bulging, or leaking
  • Wash your Tupperware and other kitchen items in a solution of bleach and water to disinfect them
  • Throw away any food that might have come in contact with floodwater unless it comes in a sealed can

Water Safety

  • Follow the guidelines issue by local authorities concerning the use of tap water
  • Boil water for at least one minute to kill any bacteria
  • You can disinfect water by adding 1/8 of unscented household bleach to one gallon of water. You will need to let it rest for at least 30 minutes before you can use it
  • You can also add purifying-tablets to water instead of boiling or disinfecting it
  • If you have infants, don’t feed them formula made with treated water. Try using canned baby formula instead

Beware of Mold

  • Protect yourself from mold by wearing a face mask whenever you are cleaning an area where mold has grown
  • Open windows and doors or use fans to let the air help dry out your home or office. You should try to have all the surfaces cleaned within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold from growing
  • If you encounter mold in your home, try cleaning it with a mixture of 1 cup of bleach per 1-gallon of water.
  • You should always wear gloves when cleaning moldy areas or working with bleach

Protect Yourself from Tetanus

Tetanus can enter the bloodstream through an open wound, even small ones. Tetanus can cause a condition known as lockjaw. This condition causes painful muscle tightening. When it attacks the jaw muscles, you won’t be able to open your mouth or swallow.

If you experience lockjaw, you should come to the Altus Emergency Center in Lumberton as soon as possible.

Treating Wounds

If you cut yourself while cleaning up after a flood, you need to wash the wound with soap and clean water thoroughly. Apply an antibiotic cream to the injury.

If you have not had a tetanus shot in the last ten years, you will need to get one. Additionally, if your wound is deep, severe, or becomes infected, you need to seek immediate medical attention.
