National Kidney Month – Kidney Health

Show Your Kidneys Some Love!

Your kidneys are so important, they have a whole month dedicated to them; you guessed it, March is National Kidney Month.

Altus Emergency Center doctors, nurses and admin staff will be working hard this month to raise awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle for proper kidney health. The following are ways to protect yourself from developing chronic kidney disease and other kidney related disorders like kidney stones.

Why are Kidneys So Important?

When thinking of the function of our kidneys we can compare them to our body’s natural chemical plant, they are responsible for:

  • Regulating Fluid Levels
  • Activating Vitamin D which helps keep bones strong
  • They filter waste out of 200 liters of blood every day
  • They release hormones that help regulate blood pressure
  • They control the production of red blood cells

They keep blood minerals (sodium, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and acid content) balanced.

What Happens When Your Kidneys Don’t Function Well?

As you can see from the list above, the kidneys stay pretty busy, so when they suffer damage it inevitably affects other organs, these are some of the problems kidney disease can cause:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Heart Attack
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Stroke
  • Nerve Damage
  • Anemia
  • Weak Bones
  • Kidney Failure

Kidney Health Statistics in the US: Are You at Risk of Developing Kidney Disease?

Did you know that 1 in 3 adults in the US has a high risk of developing kidney disease?

What’s worse 1 in 9 American adults already has kidney disease yet most don’t even know it.

These are some of the leading causes or risk factors for chronic kidney disease:

  • Diabetes
  • A Family History of Kidney Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Being over 60

Other risk factors include:

  • Unhealthy lifestyle
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol Abuse

Kidney Disease Treated in the ER

The most common kidney disease treated in the emergency room is kidney stones which can be extremely painful.

It is estimated that 13% of men and 7% of women in the United States will develop kidney stones at some point in their lives.

To make matters worse, the likelihood of reoccurrence has been estimated to be as high as 50% within 5 years from the first occurrence.

What Causes Kidney Stones?

One of the most common kidney health problems is kidney stones. Kidney stones are nothing more than crystalized calcium deposits, sometimes they contain uric acid or amino acids, they start as small specks, but they can quickly bind and become larger.

Kidney stones can be caused by many factors including:

  • Gout (high levels of uric acid)
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Obesity
  • Dehydration
  • High Protein Diet
  • Prolonged Exposure to a Hot Climate or High Altitude
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Family History of Kidney Stones
  • Being Inactive for an Extended Period of Time

Kidney Stone Symptoms

Most patients that visit our centers who are diagnosed with kidney stones show one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Severe Flank and Lower Back Pain (This may radiate down to the groin area)
  • Presence of Blood in Their Urine (Hematuria)
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Heavy Sweating
  • Difficulty Urinating

Kidney Stone Diagnosis and Treatments in the ER

Although your symptoms may indicate you have a kidney stone, doctors will require additional tests like x-rays, ultrasounds and in some cases a CT Scan, this will help them determine the size and location of the stone which will then dictate the proper medical treatment.

Kidney stone treatments will vary depending on the severity, size, and location of the stone, small stones will often pass through the urine on their own, and these are usually treated with pain medication and observation. Larger stones or those which have caused other side effects such as infection or kidney failure may require surgery.

Preventing Kidney Disease

If you know you have a higher risk than normal of developing kidney disease the best thing to do is to try and prevent it, in order to do this, should get checked regularly, have a urine test and blood test done at least once a year.

Your kidneys work hard every day, show them love by drinking plenty of fluids, eating a healthy balanced diet, exercise regularly, don’t smoke or abuse alcohol.

Dunbar Primary Student Wellness Fair

Dunbar Primary Student Wellness Fair in Lufkin Rocks!

At the Science Fair

Nothing is better than experiencing science live! Last Friday, March 9th, 2018, staff from CHI St. Luke’s Health – Memorial enjoyed teaching kids from the Dunbar Primary School in Lufkin, Texas through science!  How did this happen?  Well, it was not one, but two fun stations that were sponsored to teach kids valuable health and prevention tips they can treasure for a lifetime.

What Did The Children Learn?

Station 1

At the Dunbar Primary Student Wellness Fair, Station 1 was a hand washing training station where students learned how to properly wash their hands. The children rubbed a safe liquid on their hands and placed them under a black light. This revealed that on the surface our hands appear clean. However, germs are everywhere. After properly washing the hands for 15 seconds, students returned to the black light to observe their hands were “clean.” This was a demonstration stressing the importance of proper hand washing.

THE CHILDREN LEARNED

If you don’t clean your hands properly, you risk having harmful germs on your hands and spreading them to others!  Learn to wash your hands correctly and frequently to avoid the spread of yucky germs!

Station 2

Now it’s time for Station number two.  At the Dunbar Primary Student Wellness Fair, students practiced staying calm and calling 911 individually on the large keypad board display, without forgetting to press the “Call” button to actually place the call. This is a step that children often forget. Children also have an issue knowing how to get into the phone app to reach the keypad.

After this exercise students learned about several medical instruments, such as the stethoscope and what they are used for and when. By the end of the session, they were able to identify each and know their proper function and use. They easily identified toy versions that would light up or mimic the results of the professional instruments. For example, the toy stethoscope would light up and mimic a heartbeat. Instruments covered were the X-Ray machine, stethoscope, ear thermometer, and syringe.

THE CHILDREN LEARNED

A bunch of cool stuff!  Not only did they learn how to dial 911 but they also learned about various medical instruments.  The super cool kids enjoyed taking X-Rays of their hands and giving us all shots! Ultimately they know the doctor is not scary, and we simply go there to receive treatment to become well.

Friendly ER Visit to Another Pumpkin Patch Preschool

Smiles & Cheer at Another Pumpkin Patch Preschool

Our Staff & Health Bear Were Thrilled to Entertain Another Pumpkin Patch Preschool!

Last Friday, March 9th, 2018 was a treat for many adorable preschoolers and their teachers at Another Pumpkin Patch Preschool.  It was a day filled with smiles and lessons learned. The daycare and preschool in Huntington, Texas whose motto is, “Learn and Grow Together” received a special treat!  The staff from CHI St. Luke’s Health Emergency Center and their life size Teddy Bear entertained the children with story time.  It is natural for both adults and little ones to be afraid of a trip to the doctor.  However, in the event of an emergency, it’s important that they learn that a trip to the ER is a good thing.  At CHI St. Luke’s Health Emergency Center, we are here to help take care of their “ouches” and “boo-boo’s” as fast as possible.

Cheerleading Safety Month – Cheer Safe!

National Cheerleading Safety Month

Cheering for Safety

Give us an S, an A, an F, E, T, Y!  What do we have? SAFETY! Why are we cheering? Because March is Cheerleading Safety Month, and as always, the staff at Altus Emergency Centers is cheering for your child’s safety.

Cheerleading has come a long way since it’s early days, and it is now a highly competitive and demanding sport, and like with any other sport, cheerleaders are susceptible to sports injuries. There has been a lot of debate regarding the number of injuries sustained by cheerleaders, some claim it is on the rise while others feel critical injuries have diminished in recent years thanks to new safety rules applied to the sport.

ER Treatments for Cheerleading Injuries Altus ER Centers Lumberton Texas

Common Cheerleading Injuries

Both are correct, thankfully catastrophic cheerleading injuries have declined considerably during the last decade, however, the number of cheerleader emergency room visits for non-catastrophic injuries has increased, these injuries include:

• Ankle Sprains

• Knee Injuries

• Wrist Injuries

• Shoulder Injuries

• Lower Back Pain, and Concussions

Altus ER Tips to Cheer Safe!

School cheerleading programs must have a certified cheerleading coach managing the program, and there are safety guidelines that must be followed to ensure the wellbeing of the athletes, these include:

cheer safe to avoid common injuries altus er centers texas

Using the Right Equipment

The use of landing mats is not currently mandatory either during practice sessions or performances, but these are recommended.

Most cheerleading-related injuries occur during practice especially when learning new maneuvers, it is advisable to always practice using 4-inch landing mats to avoid serious injuries.

Footgear is an important factor in injury prevention, cheerleaders should wear properly fitting rubber-soled shoes with adequate cushioning and ankle support. Additionally, flyers should consider wearing a cheering vest during practice to protect themselves from bruising and injury.

Choose a Safe Place to Practice

Back in the day when cheerleading was mostly about waving pom-poms and chanting, it was safe to practice out in the open. Because cheerleading now involves advanced acrobatics and gymnastics, practice spaces should be chosen carefully. Never practice on wet or uneven surfaces like grass or turf, instead look for smooth, level, and dry places to practice in which are clear of obstacles that may cause injury.

Stay in Shape

Cheerleading requires a great deal of strength and balance, and therefore athletes should take great care of their fitness all year-round.

Like with any sport it is important not to overdo it, cheerleaders should take time to rest between training sessions to avoid overuse injuries.

Given that cheerleading now requires gymnastic skills, it is not a bad idea to enroll your child in a gymnastics program, this will serve to improve the child’s skills, and confidence which will help prevent injuries.

Cheering for You Altus ER Centers

Stretch, Warm Up, and Cool Down

We cannot stress how important warming exercises and proper stretching techniques are, these have been proven to reduce muscle strain and prevent injuries, however, cool down exercises and after workout stretching exercises are just as important in injury prevention.

Follow Stunt Progression

The saying you need to learn to crawl before you learn to walk applies to everything in life, especially advanced gymnastic sports. Coaches need to ensure cheerleaders learn the basic skills before introducing more advanced movements and stunts.

Altus Emergency Cares About Cheerleading Safety

At Altus Emergency Centers, we applaud the level of commitment and skill being a cheerleader requires, we encourage students to challenge themselves, improve their skills and push themselves to do things they never thought were possible, but, we urge, parents, coaches, and athletes alike to always put safety first.

Surviving the Flu Epidemic – Complications & Signs of Alert

Surviving the Flu Epidemic - Complications & Signs of Alert

How to Fight the Flu Epidemic!

The flu epidemic this year is hitting the United States harder than predicted, as some circulating strands of the influenza virus were not included in the annual recommendations report, this means these strands were not contemplated when creating the flu vaccines for this year.

The state of Texas is one of several experiencing a higher than normal rate of influenza virus contagions, for this reason, Altus Emergency Centers is sounding the alarm for residents of Texas to take extra precautions to avoid being infected and to reduce the risk of complications which could lead to death.  View the most recent Study of Influenza Cases in Texas released by the Texas Human and Health Services.

Avoiding Infections During a Flu Epidemic

The vaccines that are made available to the public each year may not prevent a person from being infected with the influenza virus, but it can help diminish the effects of the illness and aid in a speedier healing process.

Because of this, it is recommended that individuals constantly wash their hands, especially before eating, we recommend you carry a small container of alcohol-based hand sanitizer to use when washing your hands with soap and water is not possible.

Clean your workspace with antibacterial towels, make sure the label says it has been tested to kill the flu virus.

Eating right and getting plenty of rest is a good way to keep your immune system healthy, consider taking a vitamin C supplement this time of year, to help keep your defenses up.

Get to Know the Dangers of a Flu Epidemic

When Things Take Turn for The Worse

As awful as the flu symptoms can be, most of us are able to fight the infection on our own and make a full recovery within a few days or weeks, some individuals, however, are at a higher risk of developing complications from the flu, some of these complications are extremely severe can lead to death if not treated properly.

Patients with increased risk factors include:

  • Individuals over the age of 65

  • Young children under the age of 5, especially infants and toddlers

  • Pregnant women and women two weeks postpartum

Patients suffering from chronic diseases like diabetes, asthma, cystic fibrosis, COPD, heart disease, kidney, or liver disorders, obesity, and anyone with a weakened immune system.

Complications from the Flu

The flu virus is extremely aggressive and reproduces very fast, this results in a strong response from the immune system, in most healthy adults this response is enough to combat the virus, this, however, can tax the immune system and lead to secondary infections.

Secondary infections range from mild-moderate to more severe which if left untreated can result in the death of the patient.

Mild to Moderate Complications of the Flu

  • Ear Infections

  • Sinus Infections

  • Dehydration

Severe Complications from the Flu

These can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated on time.

  • Pneumonia: A lung infection most commonly caused by bacteria, but it can also be caused by viruses or fungi.

  • Myocarditis: Inflammation of the heart

  • Encephalitis: Inflammation of the brain

  • Myositis or Rhabdomyolysis: Inflammation of the muscle tissue

  • Overwhelming Immune Response: In some patients, the immune system response can be so severe it can damage too much tissue in the lungs, making it difficult to deliver oxygen to the blood, resulting in hypoxia and death.

We at Altus Emergency Centers would also like to show our appreciation for the loving support we have received from the communities we serve this year, and taking advantage of December being Safe Toys and Gift Month, we have prepared a simple safe toys guide for holiday gift shopping.

According to the latest report from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, an estimated 240,000 toy-related injuries were treated in Emergency Rooms across the country in 2016. This highlights the importance of gifting safe toys this Holiday Season.

What to look for and what to avoid when buying toys?

Most of the toy-related injuries reported to the CPSC last year were children under the age of 15, and 39% of these injuries were due to lacerations, contusions, or abrasions.

New toys are constantly entering the market, we recommend you follow a watchdog site to receive updates on recalled toys, so you can avoid purchasing them or return them if you already have.

The Safe Toys Guide:  What to Look For

It’s important to acknowledge that unless you know what to look for, it’s difficult to know the difference between the safe toys and gifts and the potentially dangerous ones.  Please read the following to be aware:

  • Always look for the “ATSM” label on toys, having this label means the toy has passed the standards set by the American Society of Testing Materials.
  • If your gift includes art supplies these should be labeled as non-toxic.
  • Read labels to ensure toys do not contain led paint.
  • Toys made of fabric should be labeled as flame resistant or flame retardant.
  • Make sure the label on any stuffed animals indicates it can be washed.
  • Always make sure you are gifting a toy appropriate for the child’s age, maturity, and abilities.
  • Always read the warnings and safety precautions that come with the toys.

The “Bad Toys” – What to Avoid

  • Toys with sharp edges, or those with spikes, rods, or dangerous rigid points.
  • Projectile toys or those that include flying parts as these can cause unintentional injuries. Remember that BB guns are not toys.  If you insist purchasing one, be mindful if the child’s age and never leave them unsupervised.
  • Only buy toys that will withstand impact, if you fear the material might break into dangerous shards do not buy it.
  • Avoid excessively loud toys, if the sound is too loud it could damage your child’s ears.
  • Avoid toys with long pull strings, try keeping these to less than 7 inches.
  • If you have children under the age of 3 avoid any toys with small parts that they can put in their mouths

Toy Gifting Safety Tips

Buying the perfect gift involves a lot more than just buying the most popular toy this season.  The gift of safety is priceless, and it doesn’t require much work, all you need to do is follow these Safe Toys and Gifts Tips:

  • Buy age-appropriate toys, all toys describe the age they are appropriate for, even video games.
  • Do your homework, investigate which toys are not considered safe and avoid those.
  • Read all the warning labels and follow the precautions that accompany the toy.
  • Learn how to properly use the toy, and then teach your kids how to do use it.
  • Buy quality toys, we know they might be more expensive, but good quality materials are less likely to break and cause injury.
  • Have an adult present when children are opening their gifts, inspect the toy to ensure it is safe before allowing your kids to play with it.
  • If you are giving or have received edible gifts, beware of ingredients that may trigger allergies or food sensitivity symptoms.
  • Ask your friends and family to place their presents in a safe place where children cannot grab them.

Fun Handwashing Tips for Kids

Fun Handwashing Tips for Kids

Tricks to Show Your Kids How to Wash Their Hands Correctly

This is the final day of National Handwashing Awareness Week. For adults who don’t spend a lot of time with children, this celebration might seem a little unnecessary, but to parents who are constantly trying to get their kids to wash their hands before eating, after going to the restroom and when they come inside from playing, this is an extremely important event.

As always, we at Altus ER have some effective tricks up our sleeve to help you parents instill good hygiene habits onto your kids, handwashing can seem a boring chore for kids, but we are here to help you make it less of a chore and more of a fun activity.

Teach-Your-Children-to-Wash-Their-Hands-Properly.

Why Should You Teach Your Kids Proper Handwashing Techniques?

Proper handwashing is the best way to prevent children from becoming sick and spreading germs. Teaching your kids to wash their hands with soap and water will help prevent them from contracting the following illnesses:

  • The common cold and flu virus

  • Hepatitis A

  • Meningitis

  • Bronchiolitis

  • And many types of diarrhea

What is the proper way to wash your hands?

6-Steps-to-Wash-Your-Hands-Correctly.

Are your Hands Really Clean?

A study conducted by researchers at the Michigan State University in 2013, revealed that an alarming 95% of people do not properly wash their hands.

The CDC’s guidelines for washing hands include the following steps:

  • Wet your hands with water (temperature does not matter).

  • Lather your hands with soap, make sure you apply soap to the back of your hands as well.

  • Scrub your hands for 20 seconds or more, make sure to scrub the back of your hands, wrists, in between fingers and under the fingernails.

  • Rinse with plenty of water.

  • Dry your hands thoroughly with a clean towel or air dryer.

Fun Ways to Get Your Child to Wash Their Hands

Sing a Song

The CDC recommends you sing happy birthday twice when you are scrubbing your hands to ensure you do it for at least 20 seconds, it’s probably not the best song to have your kids sing every day as they might expect a birthday present and cake.

You can create your own song about washing hands, or you can use a popular one that is sung to the tune of “Row your Boat” it goes like this: “wash, wash, wash your hands, wash them nice and clean. Scrub the fronts and scrub the backs and scrub the in-between” You will need to sing this at least twice.

Buy Fun Soaps

Kids love to play, so why not let them play with soap? Buying fun shape soap bars or liquid soap that have their favorite characters on the label is a good way to get kids to want to wash their hands.

Get Creative

Here are some more fun and creative ideas to get your kids to want to wash their hands:

  • Mix some glitter with water in a spray bottle, spray their hands with this mixture then have them wash it off, if you have more than one kid turn it into a friendly competition to see who can get the glitter off first.

  • Teach your kids how to blow soap bubbles, have them later and scrub their hands properly and then show them how they can make a circle with their thumb and forefinger and blow bubbles.

  • Buy them a water safe toy and have them give it a proper wash.

  • Make a game where you task your kids to get rid of pesky germs by scrubbing their hands, make funny noises and in the end, say bye, bye germs.
