Danger on the Road – Traffic Accident Statistics

With nearly 264 million vehicles registered and over 218 million individuals with a valid driving license, our roads are some of the busiest in the world. This, unfortunately, means traffic accidents are more common than any of us would like.

Annual Car Accidents in The United States

Every year the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issues a briefing based on reported car accidents nationwide. The NHTSA keeps track of injuries, fatalities as well as the factors that might have contributed to the crash such as speeding, alcohol, and distractions.

From these reports we can gather the following statistics:

car accident

The Impact of Motor Vehicle Accidents in Texas

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the state of Texas has the most traffic fatalities of any state in the country.

Most Common Causes of Traffic Accidents

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is the leading cause of road accidents in America. Drivers can become distracted by several things while driving:

  • Cell phones
  • Eating
  • Drinking from a mug or bottle
  • Talking
  • Children
  • Pets in the car

Not paying attention to the road while driving can have dire consequences; the NHTSA reports 3,142 fatalities in distraction-affection crashes in 2019. There were also an estimated 697 deaths due to drowsy driving during the same year. Source: NHTSA.

In addition to these tragic deaths, thousands of victims who experience long-term disabilities.

Speeding

The second most common cause of road accidents in the United States is speeding, and because most of these accidents typically occur at high speeds, it is also a significant cause of traffic accident-related deaths with an estimated 9,478 deaths in 2019.  Source: nsc.org

Drunk Driving

Road accidents involving drunk drivers are another major cause of injuries and fatalities, especially during the weekend and holidays. Drinking slows down our response time and our ability to focus on the road, and it can also make us drowsy.

According to data from the NHTSA,

“29% of the total fatalities of road accidents were in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes.”

In our own state of Texas:

Out of the 3,722 road accident deaths in 2017, 1,468 or 39% of them occurred in an accident caused by a drunk driver.

Getting Prompt Medical Attention Can Help Save A Life

According to the CDC for every person killed in a road accident,

“8 were hospitalized, and 100 were treated and released from the Emergency Room.”

Anyone who is involved in a severe motor vehicle accident should be taken to the nearest Emergency Room for evaluation, given that some injuries can only be diagnosed with advanced imagining technology.

During a crash, victims might have suffered internal injuries or head trauma that if not treated promptly can lead to long-term disabilities or even death.

Some injuries are more time-sensitive than others, in these cases it is better to transfer the patient to a Free-Standing ER facility such as any of the Altus Emergency Centers where they can be treated by a licensed emergency physician right away, rather than transport them to a Hospital ER where their treatment might be delayed due to overcrowding issues.

It’s important to remember that insurance companies are obligated to offer emergency room coverage in their policies. If you are involved in a car accident and need to go to the emergency room, your insurance policy will cover your visit.

Healthcare Facility for Holiday Emergencies. Where to Go

Looking for a Healthcare Facility for Holiday Emergencies? Where to Go.

The Holiday Season is supposed to be a time of joy and cheerful communion with family and friends. But all this excitement can sometimes lead to accidents and unexpected health issues.

We know the last thing on your holiday checklist is planning for such events, but should you need medical care during the holidays, do you know where to go?

Where to Get Help When You Have a Medical Emergency?

Choosing the right healthcare facility for holiday emergencies is vital if you want a speedy recovery. But deciding where to get the best treatment for your injuries can sometimes be confusing.

Not worry; we are here to help you plan and know where to go to get in and out quickly so you can get back to enjoying your holiday season.

Here we will explain the differences between Urgent Care, Hospital ER’s, and stand-alone Emergency Rooms.

Urgent Care

These facilities offer convenient locations and are a good option for mild illness symptoms and minor injuries.

However, these centers rarely have a doctor on-site, and most are not open 24/7. Many may even be closed during holidays. Also, their level of care is limited. So if your injury or illness turns out to be more severe than you initially thought, they won’t be able to treat you. Instead, they will recommend you visit a higher level of care facility such as the emergency room.

If they refer you to a hospital ER, not only will you waste time getting there, you may also experience long wait times to be seen by a doctor. Therefore, if the UC refers you to the ER during the holidays, it’s best to choose a freestanding emergency room where you can get treated and discharged faster.

example of an urgent care

Hospital Emergency Room

There is no question that a hospital-based emergency room is well-equipped to treat all types of emergencies with the added advantage that they are open 24/7. But, unfortunately, overcrowding and long wait times are a reality for most hospital ER’s.

On average, hospital ER patients wait more than an hour and a half to be taken to their room and 2.25 hours before discharge.

During the holidays, these wait times are sure to increase, leaving you with less time to spend with your family and recover comfortably at home.

example of a hospital emergency room

Independent/Freestanding Emergency Room

Your search for a healthcare facility for holiday emergencies is over!

A freestanding emergency room (FER or FEC), also called stand-alone ER or independent ER, is open 24/7, offers immediate treatment, and is well equipped to handle a wide variety of emergencies.

A freestanding ER has all the diagnostic equipment for doctors to identify the type and severity of your injuries. Diagnostic equipment includes X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, and clinical laboratory. Additionally, they have qualified doctors and nurses certified in emergency care, meaning you are always in good hands.

Best of all, wait times at independent emergency rooms like Altus are considerably lower. Within minutes of your arrival, one of our nurses will be assessing your injuries, and you will see a doctor within 10-15 after you arrive.

Because Altus ER’s don’t suffer from the same overcrowding issues as hospital ER’s, you will always receive faster, more personalized care from us.

At Altus Emergency Centers, we provide patients with online check-in options to make wait time even shorter. And we also provide them with free medical screening.

Contrary to many reports, Altus Emergency Centers are not more expensive than a hospital ER. In fact, we have negotiated special rates with our in-house doctors to ensure you receive the best care at the best price.

Additionally, our patient advocate will help you understand and maximize your health insurance benefits. They will make sure you never pay more for out-of-pocket expenses than you should.

Choosing Your Healthcare Plan Wisely

What to Ask When Choosing Your Healthcare Plan

The 2022 open enrollment period opened on November 1st and ends on December 15th, 2021, this means that many of us are actively shopping for the health care plan that bests suits our needs and budget.

To get the most out of our medical insurance plans, we must understand how the plans work, and what they cover. State and Federal insurance laws obligate insurers to include certain benefits and provide certain protections; however, insurers offer different plans from which you can choose, some will provide more coverage and protection than others, but this usually means the extra coverage comes at a price.

When you are shopping for healthcare coverage, insurance companies will provide a summary of each of their plans, this information will help you choose the right plan for you and your family. But, keep in mind the insurers won’t provide all the details of the plan until you have enrolled in the plan.

healthcare-plan

What is a Healthcare Policy?

For all intent and purposes, a health care policy is a legal contract between you and the health insurance company or health maintenance organization (HMO). When you enroll in a program, the insurance company or HMO will provide a copy of the contract, this will give detailed information about what your rights and responsibilities are under the plan.

For more information on the types of plans offered in Texas, please visit the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI)

healthcare insurance

Can I Cancel the Plan If I am Not Satisfied with the Coverage?

Yes, when you receive your copy of the policy detailing all the benefits, it is essential you read it carefully, especially if you have any special health needs. This will be the first time you are seeing the details of the coverage you will receive, and it’s important for you to know that if you are not satisfied with the policy, you have 10 days to return it and get a refund of your premium.

What is the Best Way to Compare Plans?

When you are shopping for medical insurance, ask the provider for their summary of benefits and coverage. This is the best way for you to compare healthcare plans as this document uses a standardized format making it easier to compare one item to another.

This summary outlines the basic coverage and cost of the plan you are interested in and will include the following:

  • Benefits and Exclusions
  • Links to Your Preferred Provider Directory and Drug Formulary
  • Deductible Amount
  • Coinsurance and Copayment Amounts
  • Out-of-Pocket limits
  • Referral Requirements

Always Ask About Emergency Medical Coverage

State and Federal laws obligate insurance companies to include Emergency Medical coverage in their policies. However, as we mentioned before, how much is covered can change from one plan to the next. As of August 6th, 2018, the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) approved a controversial new program which grants the largest Health Insurance company in Texas to deny payments for some ER visits. Therefore, it is crucial to ask how your plan will process emergency medical treatment and ER visits before you enroll.

Can You Appeal a Deny of Payment on ER Treatments?

Absolutely, every consumer has the right to appeal the insurance company’s decision to not pay for treatment received in the ER.

According to the TDI, they received assurances from the insurance company that patients will have the right to have their doctor debate the treatment plan provided with the insurer doctor before a denial of payment was issued, and patients will be able to appeal the denial with an independent review organization.

Altus Emergency Center’s Patient Advocate department is available to patients review their health insurance claims and to aid in the event of an appeal of payment denial. Our priority is and always been the wellbeing of our patients, and our doctors follow care protocols to ensure the best medical care is provided.

Daily Pandemic Denials

JOIN THE CAUSE,

TOGETHER, WE CAN PUT A STOP TO DAILY PANDEMIC DENIALS

Article & Video Source: Pandemic Denials

Health Insurance companies are making record profits at your expense

During this pandemic, Health Insurance companies are making record profits while at the same time increasing our premiums and denying our claims. Here’s how they did it…

Sign the Petition Today

1. Delayed or Deferred Care

When The pandemic lockdowns began, suddenly millions of people were staying home, avoiding or delaying their medical treatment. As we all know, this lasted for MONTHS, so while we all kept paying our monthly premiums, insurers simply didn’t need to pay out as much as they normally would, leading to gross profit margins in excess of 24% more than in 2019.

2. Pandemic Premiums

Even though the insurers had just seen record profits in the first three quarters of 2020 they still increased premiums by as much as 9.91% in Texas. Media stories of overrun hospitals and fears of soaring pandemic-related healthcare costs helped insurers to justify increasing their rates. But, in the fourth quarter, when the COVID waves hit the hardest and began to wreak havoc on our healthcare system, they deployed their most insidious tactic yet…

3. Daily Denials

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, medical claim denials have risen 11% nationwide, with the most denial rates found in the Pacific Coast (13.1%) and the Northeast (12.9%).  The two regions that were hit hardest by the first wave of COVID-19 outbreaks.

Worse yet…the same study showed 86% of those denials were potentially avoidable due to bureaucratic delays. Unbelievably 48% of those claims cannot be recovered.

Plainly put, this allows insurers to keep money that should have made its way back to our frontline workers when they needed it the most.

This isn’t right. We know it…and they know it.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Allergy Triggers to Avoid

Allergy Triggers to Avoid

National Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month

Since 1984, May is National Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month.

These two conditions are often overlooked and not given the importance they deserve. However, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), asthma affects more than 24 million people in the United States, including more than 6 million children.

Additionally, allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness, with more than 50 million Americans suffering from allergies each year.

Why Is May National Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month?

Declaring an observance month is never random. May happens to be the peak month for allergies. Asthma and allergies often go hand in hand, so it’s not unusual for someone with asthma to also suffer from allergies.

There is currently no cure for either of these conditions, but educating patients and the public about them can help manage them.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Asthma and Allergies

People can suffer from asthma or allergies, or both. Many myths surround these conditions, so as part of Altus Emergency Centers’ commitment to educate and prevent different health issues, we would like to share some facts.

Asthma facts:

  • Asthma can be hereditary, but it can also affect people who have other allergic conditions and anyone exposed to polluted air, tobacco smoke, or viral respiratory infections at a young age.
  • Overweight and obese patients are at a greater risk of asthma.
  • Symptoms can include cough, wheeze, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
  • Medications can help manage asthma allowing patients to enjoy an active life.
  • Weather conditions such as extremely dry, wet, or windy weather can worsen an asthma condition.
  • If not managed adequately, asthma can lead to death

Allergy Facts

  • People can suffer from different types of allergies; food allergies, eczema, and hay fever (rhinitis) are just a few examples.
  • Symptoms from allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, include sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, itching of the nose, and watery eyes. This can be seasonal or perennial (year-round).
  • Allergies are often hereditary.
  • Allergies can appear at any age, and they can also disappear for some time and return.
  • Although most cases of allergies present mild symptoms, sometimes an allergy can be life-threatening, causing an extreme immune reaction known as anaphylaxis which puts the person into shock and can significantly impair their breathing.  This type of allergic reaction requires immediate medical attention even if the patient receives epinephrine and feels better.
  • Knowing which allergy triggers to avoid is crucial.

Common Allergy and Asthma Triggers to Avoid

  • Tobacco smoke: if you suffer from allergies or asthma, you should avoid smoking and secondhand smoke
  • Outdoor air pollution: pollution originating from factories, cars, and burning wood can trigger respiratory allergies and asthma attacks. Try to avoid places with high pollution levels or plan your activities when air pollution levels are lower.
  • Dust mites: These microscopic bugs that live in beds and couches are big triggers. Try to use allergen-proof mattress and pillowcase covers, wash your bedding weekly, and vacuum carpets, rugs, sofas, regularly
  • Allergens in pet fur: unfortunately, many people are allergic to the allergens of their furry pets. If you know you are allergic, try finding an allergy-friendly breed, bathe and groom them regularly, and use an air cleaner with a HEPA filter.
  • Mold: check your house for mold, which is common in damp areas. Eliminate it to help control your attacks.
  • Disinfectants and cleaning products: avoid overuse of cleaning products. Choose products with a mild scent, and if possible, avoid aerosol presentations. Do not mix disinfectant products. Choose products that are less likely to trigger your allergies or asthma, such as products with hydrogen peroxide (no more than 3%) or ethanol (ethyl alcohol). Avoid using bleach.
  • Dust: avoid disturbing dust but keep surfaces at your home and work as free from it as possible.
  • Food allergies:  make sure to inform the people who handle your food about any food allergies you have.

When to Go to the ER

A severe allergy or an asthma crisis requires immediate medical attention. Go to the nearest Altus Emergency Center immediately if you or someone you know experiences:

  • Shortness of breath or difficulty speaking
  • Very rapid breathing, coughing, or wheezing
  • Chest pain
  • Bluish color in the face, lips, or nails
  • Fainting
  • Vomiting
  • Swelling of the mouth, tongue, or throat.

Altus Emergency Centers are open 24/7 in their four locations: Baytown, Lake Jackson, Lumberton, Waxahachie. Severe allergic reactions and asthma attacks are time-sensitive emergencies; our minimal wait times and highly qualified medical professionals can help save lives.

High Blood Pressure Education Month – It Starts with Your Heart

Understanding High Blood Pressure

It Starts with Your Heart

May has been designated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as National High Blood Pressure Education Month.

Because of this, at Altus Emergency Centers we will focus our attention during this month on the education and prevention of high blood pressure in the communities we serve.

What is Blood Pressure?

Every time your heart beats it pumps blood through your arteries so it can transport oxygen and nutrients to the rest of your body.

As the blood moves, it pushes against the sides of the blood vessels. The strength of this pushing is your blood pressure.

Your blood pressure will rise and fall throughout the day, but if it stays high for a long time, it can damage your heart. High blood pressure also known as hypertension can cause heart attack, stroke and lead to other severe health problems.

Understanding Your Blood Pressure Reading

When a doctor or nurse takes your blood pressure, the reading consists of two numbers, which represent your systolic and diastolic blood pressures.

Systolic Blood Pressure: This is the highest level your blood pressure reaches when your heart beats.

Diastolic Blood Pressure: This is the lowest level your blood pressure reaches as your heart relaxes between beats.

Alarming Facts of High Blood Pressure in America

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • 75 million American adults have high blood pressure that is 1 in 3 Americans
  • 1 in 3 adults has a condition known as prehypertension (higher than normal blood pressure but not yet in the high blood pressure range)
  • Only about 54% of hypertensive patients have their condition under control
  • High blood pressure is the primary or contributing cause of death for approximately 410,000 American’s a year, that is close to 1100 deaths a day
  • Between 30 and 32% of Texans ages 20 and older have high blood pressure

4 Things You May Not Know About High Blood Pressure

Here are some surprising facts about high blood pressure you may not have heard of:

1. There is a Link Between Hypertension and Dementia

Recent studies show a link between high blood pressure and an increased risk of dementia. The studies showed that having uncontrolled hypertension during midlife (45-65 years old) increased the risk of developing dementia later in life.

2. It’s Not an Old Folks Condition

High blood pressure can affect anyone regardless of age, gender and ethnicity. Statistics show that 1 in 4 men and nearly 1 in 5 women age 35-44 have high blood pressure.

3. Hypertension Usually Has No Symptoms

The condition is popularly known as the “silent killer” because it doesn’t always show symptoms like headaches or sweating.

The only sure way to know if you have high blood pressure or not is to have it checked regularly.

4. Many People with High Blood Pressure Don’t Know They Have It

The CDC estimates that as many as 11 million American’s suffer from high blood pressure and don’t know it, and as a result, are not being treated.

Tips to Prevent High Blood Pressure

At Altus Emergency Centers we believe preventing illnesses and accidents is the best policy. To reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure you should:

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Exercise Regularly
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet
  • Reduce sodium (salt) in your diet
  • Limit the amount of alcohol you drink
  • Quit smoking
  • Cut back on caffeine
  • Reduce your stress
  • Monitor your blood pressure regularly
  • Speak to your doctor if you notice your blood pressure is higher than normal

What to Do During a Hypertensive Crisis

A hypertensive crisis or high blood pressure crisis happens when your blood pressure rises quickly and severely with readings of 180/120 or over.

If your blood pressure reaches 180/120 or over and you experience symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness or weakness, changes in vision, or difficulties speaking, you are experiencing a hypertensive emergency and need to get to the nearest Altus ER Center for immediate medical attention.

Physical Activity is Important – Fitness and Sports Month

Let’s Get Moving! Why Physical Activity is Important

Exercise has become almost a curse word in our culture. We dread going to the gym, and life always seems to get in the way. Between work, taking care of our family, who has time for the gym?

We have been led to believe that exercise is just something to do so we can lose weight and look good. However, physical activity has many benefits for our physical and mental health and can help us live longer and better lives.

Benefits of Exercise

These are just a few of the ways regular exercise can improve our daily lives:

1. It Will Help You Lose Those Extra Pounds

Any physical activity will burn calories, so getting at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity exercise will help boost our metabolism and help us burn more calories, which in turn will help slim our waistlines and look fabulous.

For those of you who are already at your ideal weight, exercise can help you maintain it.

2. It Can Make You Feel Happier

Exercise not only changes your body it also has a positive impact on your brain by causing changes in the part of the brain that regulates stress and anxiety.

Exercising increases our brain’s sensitivity to hormones like serotonin and norepinephrine, which relieve feelings of depression; and stimulated the production of endorphins which reduce the perception of pain.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

3. It’s Good for Your Muscles and Bones

As we age, we lose muscle mass and function which can lead to injuries and disabilities. Physical activity and a healthy diet will help you grow and maintain healthy muscle mass.

Exercise especially high-impact activities like running or walking, help build bone density and reduces our risk of developing osteoporosis later in life.

4. Increases Your Energy Levels

You may think that adding exercise to your long list of things to do, will only serve to make you even more tired than you are, but this would be wrong.

Physical activity is, in fact, a fantastic energy booster for anyone, even people who suffer severe chronic illnesses and persistent fatigue.

5. Reduces Your Risk of Chronic Disease

According to the National Institutes of Health, the lack of physical activity is the primary cause of most chronic diseases.

Regular exercise helps prevent or manage a wide range of health problems and concerns, including:

  • Stroke
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Many Types of Cancer
  • Arthritis

Regular exercise can also help improve cognitive function and helps lower the risk of death from all causes.

6. Get A Better Night’s Rest

Exercising can help you fall asleep faster and get better sleep. Just don’t exercise too close to bedtime, or you may be too energized to go to sleep.

7. Helps Put the Spark Back into Your Sex Life

When we exercise, we feel and look better, which can help emotionally boost our sex life.

Additionally, regular physical activity may enhance sexual arousal in women and reduce erectile dysfunction in men.

Take it Slow, Do it Right and Avoid Injuries

Exercise is meant to improve our lives not to make them more difficult.

Regardless of what your fitness level is, everyone is vulnerable to a sports injury. Common exercise-related injuries include:

  • Sprains
  • Muscle Strains
  • Tendinitis—inflammation of a tendon, often due to overuse
  • ACL and Meniscus Tears of the Knee—a rip in one of the ligaments that helps stabilize the knee or cartilage that cushions the knee joint
  • Rotator Cuff Tears—rips in the group of muscles and their tendons that hold the arm in the shoulder socket.

Tips to Avoid Exercise-Related Injuries

  • Talk to your doctor before you start an exercise program, this is especially important for women over age 55, men over the age of 45 and anyone with a chronic illness
  • Choose the right workout for your age and fitness goals
  • Stretch, warm up, and cool down before and after your exercise program
  • Cross train, vary your workout routine to avoid overstressing one set of muscles
  • Learn the proper technique and mind your posture
  • Never push yourself to the point of pain
  • Wear the right gear
  • Start gradually, don’t try to do too much all at once
  • Stay hydrated
