Water Safety Tips to Prevent Drownings

Water Safety Tips to Prevent Drowning

Tips to Help Save A Life During Water Safety Month

Summer is almost here, and with it come long, hot, sunny days perfect for swimming in pools, lakes, and rivers.

The truth is that swimming is a great activity. Not only is it fun; it also provides a bunch of physical and mental benefits. However, drowning is a real danger, even for expert swimmers.

Perhaps that is why the month of May has been designated as Water Safety Month. This month we aim to raise awareness of the dangers of accidental drownings and how to prevent them.

How Big is The Problem?

What are the risks of not following proper water safety? Statistics according to the CDC:

  • Ten people die every day from unintentional drowning
  • An additional 332 people die each year from drowning in boating-related incidents
  • Drowning is the fifth leading cause of accidental injury death in the United States
  • 1 in 5 drowning deaths is a child under the age of 14
  • For every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency room care for nonfatal submersion injuries

Where Do Drownings Occur?

According to information published in Enddrowningnow.org, most drownings occur in:

  • Pools 21.3%
  • Lakes 25.9%
  • Rivers 27.2%
  • Oceans 10.4%

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

What Can You Do to Prevent Drownings?

Although not all drownings result in death, nonfatal drowning injuries can cause severe brain damage that may result in long-term disabilities such as:

  • Memory problems
  • Learning disabilities
  • Permanent loss of basic functioning (permanent vegetative state)

So, learning how you can prevent accidental drowning injuries is essential.

Water Safety Tips

Learn to Swim

Although strong swimmers can also suffer drowning injuries knowing how to swim can reduce the risk of drowning in all age groups.

Learn CPR

In a drowning situation, every second counts.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions with artificial ventilation. It is used to manually preserve brain function.

CPR performed by bystanders has been shown to save lives and improve outcomes in drowning victims. The more quickly CPR is started, the better.

Supervise

Real life drowning accidents don’t resemble those we see on TV or movies. Most victims don’t scream or thrash in the water.

Instead, victims tend to appear lethargic and are often found unresponsive floating in the water or submerged beneath it.

Therefore, a responsible adult who knows how to swim should always be available to supervise kids who are in or around water.

You can take turns to give the supervisor a break so they can also enjoy the party but be careful never to leave kids unsupervised.

Don’t Swim Alone

It’s never a good idea to swim alone. If you get in trouble, having a buddy close by could save your life. Also, whenever possible, choose swimming sports that have lifeguards.

Use Lifejackets

Whenever you go boating or tubbing, remember to wear a lifejacket. Research shows that half of all boating deaths are preventable with the use of life jackets.

Don’t use air-filled or foam toys, such as “water wings” or “noodles” instead of life jackets. These toys are not designed to keep swimmers safe.

Avoid Alcohol

Avoid drinking alcohol before or during swimming, boating, or water skiing. Do not drink alcohol while supervising children.

Be Prepared

Always have a cell phone, first aid kit, throwing or reaching floating devices near your pool. Remember to add the phone number of your nearest Altus Emergency Center to your contact list.

When to Go to the ER

All drowning victims need emergency care, so bring them to the nearest Altus Emergency Center as soon as possible.

Even though most drowning victims are revived with first aid, they still need to be evaluated by an emergency medical doctor.

Complications of the drowning event may take time to develop; it may be hours before signs and symptoms to develop.

As we get ready to enjoy our long summer days, Altus Emergency Centers would like to remind you always put safety first. And if an accident were to occur, we will be here to nurse you and your loved one back to health.

9 Reasons Why an Appeals Process is Needed

9 Reasons Why an Appeals Process is Needed

There is no doubt that suffering an injury or illness that requires a trip to the ER is stressful. Still, it can become a nightmare when your insurance provider decides to deny coverage of treatment received in the emergency room.

Fortunately, the law is on your side. There are effective ways for asking the insurance provider to reconsider their decision and honor their coverage agreement.

patient advocate speaking with injured patient

What is Health Insurance Denial?

Suppose you suffer an accident or sudden illness and need to go to the ER, and you use your health insurance to help cover the costs. In that case, the healthcare facility will prepare a claim on your behalf detailing the treatments provided during your visit.

An insurance denial happens when your health insurance provider notifies you that they won’t cover the cost of your ER visit.

This is frustrating and scary as it potentially means you will have to pay the total cost of the treatment out-of-pocket.

However, there is no need to panic, as you can submit an appeal.

after patient care patient advocate

What is an Appeal?

Appealing means formally asking your insurance provider to reconsider its decision to deny paying for the medical services you received while in the emergency room.

You should know that you have a legal right to appeal an insurance denial. It’s no secret that insurance companies care more about their bottom line than the people they insure.

Therefore, it’s not uncommon for these companies to deny medical care payments or try to charge you out-of-network rates for emergency care services, which is illegal.

Additionally, many insurers try to complicate the appeal process to discourage patients from trying to rectify a wrong. The good news is that you don’t have to go through this process alone. Our patient advocate is here to help you submit an appeal and fight the insurance companies on your behalf.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Why is An Appeal Process Necessary?

Here are nine reasons why an appeal process is required:

  1. When the Insurance company processes the patient’s ER visit as an Out of Network Provider instead of an ER visit

The insurance must process the claim as an Emergency Room visit. They can’t just process it as an out-of-network provider.

Insurance companies sometimes try to do this because their plans state benefits are different for out-of-network providers vs. emergency room visits.

  1. When the Insurance Company processes your ER visit out of network, instead of In-Network

State law states that emergency room visits must be processed at the in-network benefit level. This means your insurance company cannot charge you more for emergency care received in a facility that is not part of their network.

  1. When the Insurance Company denies the Emergency Room visit, stating the charges are Not Covered

When you first come to the emergency room, we quote your plan’s benefits to verify eligibility. There is no valid reason for your insurance company to deny payment in these cases as long as your premium payments are up to date.

  1. The Insurance Company applies more to the patient than what they paid

Some insurances will apply a deductible to the claim, even though the benefits clearly state that the deductible does not apply to the ER visit.

  1. If the patient had COVID-related testing, and the Insurance Company applied patient cost-share

Currently, the Insurance companies have waived patient cost-share. Additionally, according to the COVID Cares Act, there is no patient cost-share for the covid testing/encounter.

  1. The insurance company processed the ER claim at an extremely low Allowable Amount, possibly at a Medicare Rate

Most benefit plans state that for Emergency Room visits, the Allowed Amount is a negotiated Rate. Some plans will have a third-party vendor reach out to negotiate the claim.

  1. Insurance Company denied the ER claim for past timely filing

Some insurance companies try to deny payment based on technicalities. We submit proof that all claim information was submitted within the timely filing limit in these cases.

  1. Insurance Company did not pay according to the contract on file

In these instances, we present a copy of the agreement to show that they did not pay according to the signed contract.

  1. Insurance Company did not pay according to the Agreement that we signed with the 3rd party vendor

We will call and make the insurance company aware that we signed an agreement. Then, we will submit a copy of that agreement to the insurance provider.

If you’ve recently received a health insurance denial after a visit to one of Altus Emergency Centers, please get in touch with our patient advocate as soon as possible. We can help you submit an appeal.

Tell-Tale Signs of a Broken Bone

How to Know if your Bone is Broken?

You know what they say about sticks and stones?  Well, a broken bone really hurts!  Bookmark this easy guide of the signs of a broken bone to know what to do if you or someone you love ever has an accident in the future.  Bone fractures, like most other injuries, vary in severity, and diagnosing is not easy without the use of advanced imaging technology like X-rays.

Some folks believe they can tell if a bone is broken by whether the patient can use it or put weight on it or not. Unfortunately, that is a myth; it’s surprising how often people who have a broken bone don’t even realize it because they can move it.

That is why it’s important to know the signs of a broken bone and get the issue fixed before it becomes an even bigger problem.

Signs of a Broken Bone

1. Bruising and Discoloration

Most of us tend to ignore our bruises thinking they are not that big of a deal, but they could be the first sign that your fall or accident led to a broken bone.

Bruising occurs when tissue capillaries get damaged, and blood leaks out of them. The bigger the bruising area is, the more likely damage involves deep tissue, possibly bone deep.

2. Swelling

There are many reasons behind swelling, but when it occurs after a trauma, it could be a sign of a broken bone. Swelling occurs when fluids and sometimes blood from an injury start to leak into the surrounding soft tissue like muscle, fat, and skin. The extra fluids cause the tissue to swell and become hard and painful to touch.

3. Deformity

If your injured arm, leg, hand, or foot look deformed, chances are you broke it. If your arm or leg bends in strange ways, this is a clear indicator that you need to come into the nearest Altus Emergency Center to get this issue fixed.

4. Crepitus

This word sound ominous and it is. Crepitus is when you can feel or hear crunching beneath your skin. Trust us when we say, that’s not supposed to exist anywhere in your body; and if it does, then this is a sign there are broken pieces of bone rubbing against one another.

5. Loss of Function

Loss of function is an indicator that something is not right, and your injury could have caused a bone to break. If you cannot move your arm, hand, leg, or foot, then you need to be seen by one of our doctors as soon as possible.

Remember being able to walk or move your injured limb does not mean you do not have a fractured bone if you are in severe pain and are experiencing any of the above signs you need to be seen by a doctor as soon as possible.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

When to Go to the ER

You should rush to the nearest Altus Emergency Center if you experience any of the following after a fall or other trauma:

  • Heavy Bleeding at the site of the injury
  • Numbness in the injured or surrounding area
  • The area turns a bluish color
  • Severe swelling
  • A visible deformity at the injury site
  • Bone protruding through the skin (Open fracture)

Dislocations

You should also come in if you have a dislocated joint. In many ways, a dislocated joint can be even worse than some types of fractures. Dislocations are serious orthopedic injuries, and they happen when a joint such as a knee or shoulder become severely misaligned.

Dislocations always involve deformity and can cause stretching or even tearing of ligaments and tendons. These types of injuries will always require emergency medical attention.

The only sure way to know if you have a broken bone or another type of orthopedic injury is with advanced imaging tests like X-rays, MRI’s, and ultrasounds.

At Altus Emergency Centers we have invested heavily in the most advanced diagnostic technologies available. This equipment allows our physicians to provide faster and more accurate diagnosis and treatment of our valued patients.

What It Takes to Be an Altus ER Physician

What It Takes to Be an Altus ER Physician

Back in June 2019, Altus Emergency Centers added its own in-house physicians’ group. This means we directly employ every doctor working in our facilities.  Only the cream of the crop qualifies to be an Altus ER Physician.

Working in an emergency room is one of the most demanding jobs in the world. The demands are both physical and mental, after all, people’s lives are at stake, and not everyone is up to the task.

From the first day since we opened our doors, our first and most important goal has been to offer the highest standard of emergency care to our patients.

Our commitment to our patient’s wellbeing is the reason why we have gone to extremes to ensure our doctors are the most qualified for the job.

What is an ER Doctor?

Before we discuss what it takes to be an Altus ER Physician, let’s get to know the role of an ER doctor.  An emergency room doctor is one who knows about every aspect of the human body because their job is to diagnose, stabilize, and provide treatment to any patient who comes into the ER.

ER physicians are trained to handle acute (severe or critical) medical problems. They are also trained to use various medical devices to stabilize and save the lives of their patients.

These are some of the tasks ER doctors routinely perform:

  • Evaluate and examine patients
  • Order tests and blood work to help diagnose the patient’s condition
  • Order or administer medications to treat the patient’s injury or illness
  • Consult with other doctors, nursing staff and support staff to decide on the best treatment course for the patient
  • Explain procedures, diagnoses, tests, and available treatments to patients and their families
  • Work closely with specialists who will care for the patient once they leave the emergency r

What Training Do ER Physicians at Altus ER Have?

At Altus Emergency Centers, we hold our staff to very high standards, especially our doctors and nurses. When it comes to selecting the right person to work at any of our facilities, we, of course, take into consideration the preparation and experience of each physician.

Training to become an emergency room physician is not easy; it takes time and a lot of hard work. To become an ER doctor, a person must:

1. Earn a College Degree

Aspiring doctors need a bachelor’s degree to apply to medical school. Although there is no specific major required, its vital that they complete science-related courses in their bachelor’s degree program

2. Pass the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)

Medical schools use the scores from this exam to determine if the applicant has the critical thinking, problem-solving, and writing skills necessary to succeed in the field of medicine.

3. Earn a Medical Degree

Medical degrees involve four more years of studies. The first two years focus on theory and laboratory experiences. While the last two years include clinical rotations in different fields. During this time, students will begin working with patients, taking medical histories, and completing necessary procedures under the supervision of experienced physicians.

4. Obtain a Medical License

Before they can practice medicine, medical doctors need to obtain a license from the state of Texas. To do this, doctors must pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).  The examination tests applicants on their ability to care for patients and work in a medical and emergency setting.

5. Complete a Residency

An emergency medicine residency lasts three years and consists of:

  • Conferences: These conferences cover specific areas of emergency medicine, like cardiovascular or pulmonary treatment.
  • Lab Work: During lab work, ER doctors are trained in specific skills like airway management, repairing of wounds, and orthopedics.
  • Clinical Simulations: Working with mannequins’ students are placed into simulated situations that they might face on a day-to-day basis in a healthcare setting.

Additionally, emergency medicine residency also includes:

  • Peer reviews
  • Seminars
  • Supervised clinical training in a real-world environment.

6. Complete a Fellowship

Emergency room physicians who wish to specialize in a subspecialty must complete a fellowship program.  Subspecialties include:

  • Pediatric emergency medicine
  • Pain management
  • Disaster medicine
  • Toxicology

Here are just a few of the qualities that are expected from an Altus ER Physician:

Sports Head Injuries & When to Go to the ER

Sports Head Injuries & When to Go to the ER

We often hear about tragic stories of professional athletes suffering traumatic Sports Head Injuries.

Unfortunately, sports head injuries are not exclusive to elite pro athletes; they can happen to anyone, including kids who play contact sports at school.

A paper from the Journal of Neurosurgery, states there are approximately 500,000 emergency room visits and 60,000 hospitalization every year due to traumatic brain injuries in children ages 0-17.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Any injury that occurs on your skull, scalp, or brain is considered a head injury.

Head injuries could be something as innocent as a bump or bruise on your head to something as life-threatening as a skull fracture.

The more severe types of head injuries are known as traumatic brain injuries (TBI). A traumatic brain injury happens when we receive a blow or jolt to the head or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue.

Traumatic brain injuries are so severe that they disrupt the normal function of the brain and can cause life-long physical or mental disabilities or even death.

sports-related head injuries CT Scan

Concussions in Young Athletes

One of the most common Sports Head Injuries are concussions.  Whether your child plays football, soccer, baseball, or hockey, getting a concussion is a serious risk to young athletes.

Parents and coaches of children who play sports, especially contact sports need to educate young athletes on how to recognize the symptoms of a concussion.

If your kids get injured and don’t know what to look for they could keep on playing, which will put them at risk of a more significant injury.

Symptoms young athletes should look out for:

  • Headache or “pressure” in head
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Balance problems or dizziness
  • Double or blurry vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Sensitivity to noise
  • Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy
  • Concentration or memory problems
  • Confusion
  • Does not “feel right” or is “feeling down”

Coaches and trainers should be on the lookout for the following symptoms:

  • The child appears dazed or stunned
  • Is confused about assignment or position
  • Forgets an instruction
  • Is unsure of game, score, or opponent
  • Moves clumsily
  • Answers questions slowly
  • Loses consciousness (even briefly)
  • Shows mood, behavior, or personality changes
  • Can’t recall events before the hit or fall
  • Can’t recall events after hit or fall

Parents should also be on the lookout for possible concussion symptoms as these could show hours after the incident. If your teen shows any of the symptoms above, they likely have a concussion, and you should seek immediate medical attention.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

When to Go to The ER for a Head Injury

Not all head injuries require a trip to our ER. However, you should bring your child for evaluation in the following cases:

  • The injury won’t stop bleeding
  • Your child lost consciousness or is confused/disoriented
  • Is vomiting or feels nauseated
  • Have trouble balancing or walking
  • Has difficulty remembering stuff
  • Has a seizure

You should monitor your kids for a few days after they sustained the injury to make sure they don’t develop symptoms.

If you notice any of the following, you need to bring them to the ER immediately:

  • They have a headache that won’t go away
  • Show unusual behavior, experience mood swings or have trouble concentrating
  • Have trouble reading, writing or slur their speech
  • Feel numbness, dizziness or weakness in any body part
  • Have difficulty falling asleep or waking up
  • Have difficulty moving their eyes or notice changes in their eyesight

It’s Better to Be Safe

If you are not sure if your child has a traumatic brain injury, the best thing to do is to bring them to the nearest Altus Emergency Center. It’s better to be safe and have our doctors examine them.

Remember, Altus Emergency Centers are open 24/7 every day of the year; we will always be here for you and your family in times of need.

At Altus Emergency Centers, we are always open to treat any emergency. Remember if you use our online check-in form, we will be waiting for you at the door.

American Heart Month – Guide to a Healthy Heart

Today is the Day to Learn to Love Your Heart!

This Valentine’s Month, it’s all about the heart!  Many of us are planning the perfect date night to show our partners just how important they are to us and how much we love them.  Altus Emergency Centers wants you to pause and pay a little more attention to all of the beautiful hearts in your life, starting with your own.

This year we are partnering with the Million Hearts® initiative to bring awareness of how dangerous and devastating heart disease can be, not just on a personal level but for those we love as well.  May this be the February that you learned to love your heart.

Heart Disease Fact Sheet

  • Cardiovascular diseases kill over 800,000 Americans every year
  • Heart Disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases are responsible for 1 in every 3 deaths
  • Heart Disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States

Every 40 Seconds, an American will have a Heart Attack.

  • Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, and it’s responsible for over 370,000 annual deaths
  • Every year more than 735,000 Americans suffer a heart attack
  • According to studies:

Nearly Two-Thirds of women who die suddenly of coronary heart disease have no previous symptoms.

Sources: CDC & Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics 2018

We all glance over numbers every day like these every day.  Instead of a number, see them for what they really are, a mother, father, teacher, co-worker, best friend, classmate, neighbor, grandma, or the person standing right beside you.  At Altus Emergency Centers, we’re committed to helping you not become a statistic.  Chances are, you are still in time to make the lifestyle changes necessary to keep a healthy heart pumping for much longer.

Safeguarding Your Heart

We’ve all had our hearts broken at some point in our lives, but, as hard as heartbreak can be, we know that in time we will get better and be able to love again. This is not always the case when our hearts get sick, some of us won’t have the luxury of time to heal, which is why we need to start taking better care of our hearts now.

You are always taking care of everyone around you, this month of February make a pledge to start showing yourself some love by making healthier lifestyle and food choices including:

Improve Your Diet

Eat healthier, include more fruits and veggies, choose low-fat dairy products and cut down on the amount of fat you eat.

Fill Up on Fiber

Choose foods that are fiber-rich like oats, whole wheat bread, and beans and legumes. Fiber-rich foods will fill you up more, and they take longer for your digestive system to process, so you will fell fool for a longer time. This will help you eat less and maybe lose a few pounds without having to sacrifice your food intake.

Eat More Fish

Texans love meat, we get it, but try substituting beef for fish at least once or twice a week, a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids can help ward off heart disease.

Get Moving!

Just like the song says you’ve got to move it, move it. We know you have a busy schedule but only 30 minutes a day of moderate exercise can make a world of difference. You don’t need to go to the gym, a walk around your neighborhood, or some fun dancing around the house or even putting a little more pep into your housework might do the trick.

Cut Down on The Salt

The American diet has an unusually high amount of salt, and a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that cutting the amount of salt we consume can significantly lower the number of strokes, coronary heart disease (CHD), and heart attacks.

Live Smoke-Free!

Smoking is one of the top risk factors for heart disease, and it’s not enough to decrease the number of cigarettes you smoke per day, you need to stop smoking altogether.

Recognizing a Heart Attack

The possibility of a heart attack is real.  Heart disease is the leading cause of both men and women in the US.  Although medical studies have shown that you can drastically lower your possibility of having a heart attack through lifestyle changes, the odds are still 1 of every 4 people in America die from heart disease.  For this reason, another way to help save hearts is to get to know the signs of a heart attack and to take action.  While men and women will have different types of symptoms and not all chest pains indicate a heart attack, there are some tell-tale signs that should spark an immediate warning sign.

Here are five of the most common signs of a heart attack:

  • Pain or Discomfort in Chest

  • Lightheadedness, Nausea or Vomiting

  • Jaw, Neck or Back Pain

  • Discomfort or Pain in Jaw or Shoulder

  • Shortness of Breath

Time is a major factor, the sooner the better.

The recommended window of time to get treatment for a heart attack is of only two hours away from the first signs as those listed above.  If you risk waiting longer, the damage will be greater as the chances of survival will be lowered.

If you or someone you know experiences any of the symptoms listed here, the best thing you can do is have someone bring you to the nearest Altus Emergency Center so we can evaluate you. When it comes to heart attacks and strokes, the faster you get treatment, the greater your chances of recovery and survival will be.

It’s been said that the greatest gift we can give anyone is love, so this Valentine’s Day make a pledge to take better care of your heart so you can be around for many more years to gift love to your friends and family.
