Tips for a Safe Halloween in 2020

Tips for a Safe Halloween During COVID-19

Our lives have changed in many ways since the pandemic’s start putting our coping mechanism to the test.

Perhaps one of the most radical changes brought on by COVID-19 is the way we socialize. Physical distancing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

So how can we celebrate Halloween safely?

Tips for a Safe Halloween

In the last few days, some counties have banned door-to-door trick or treating over safety concerns. Others are strongly recommending you skip the activity this year.

So, the first thing you should do is check the recommendations of your local health officials.

Trick-or-treating is an outdoor activity and, therefore, safer as you have some control when it comes to physical distancing. An added plus is you can work in a fun face mask into your child’s costume.

If you decide to trick or treat this year, here are some tips to protect your family from COVID-19

  1. Don’t replace your face covering with a Halloween mask. Specially made fabric or surgical masks work better at preventing the spread of the virus. Most of the materials used in Halloween masks are not be enough to prevent viral transmission.
  2. Parents should line their children and only have one child at the door at a time. By avoiding gatherings at your neighbor’s door, you can help keep everyone safe
  3. Local health authorities recommend you stay close to home and keep your trick or treating party small. You should avoid going to neighborhoods where you are not sure how the virus is spreading
  4. Encourage children to bring hand sanitizer and use it frequently as they are more likely to touch their face while adjusting their costume
  5. Once you arrive home, the first thing to do is have everyone wash their hands with soap and water
  6. Don’t let your children eat any of the treats before you get home. Their hands may be dirty, and this increased their risk of getting sick not only with COVID-19 but also with the flu or stomach

General Safety Tips for Trick Or Treating

If your child has an allergic reaction, please don’t hesitate, bring them to the nearest Altus Emergency Center as soon as possible.

Halloween is a fun time for everyone in the family. Even though we may need to celebrate differently this year, Halloween can still be a joyous occasion if we follow the safety recommendations.

Although COVID-19 is on everyone’s mind these days, it is not the only health concern this time of year. Flu season is about to start, and if not treated, it could cause severe illness and complications.

If you or your child are not feeling well, it’s best to stay home. If you notice symptoms are getting worse, visit the nearest Altus Emergency Center, so our doctors can evaluate your symptoms and help you recover.

National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month

National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month

October is National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month (NMAAM). This annual campaign aims to raise the public’s awareness of the dangers of prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse.

Most of us know of the growing drug problem in our communities. But most of us aren’t aware that the fastest-growing drug problem in America isn’t heroin, cocaine, or methamphetamines, its prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

How Big is The Problem?

Most people take prescription medication responsibly; however, there is a growing trend, especially among adolescents and young adults that are misusing prescription drugs.

According to estimates from The National Institute on Drug Abuse:

  • 18 million people have misused prescription medications at least once in the last 12 months
  • 2 million Americans misused prescription pain relievers for the first time within the past year
  • More than 1 million misused prescription stimulants
  • Some 1.5 million misused tranquilizers
  • 271,000 misused sedatives
  • In 2018, 46,802 individuals died from prescription opioids overdose
  • 10,734 Americans died from antidepressant overdose
National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month

Why Is National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month So Important This Year?

The reasons why people misuse or abuse prescription and over-the-counter medication vary. In most cases, easy access to these medications topped the list of reasons.

Other reasons include misinformation on how addictive opioid medications are and the perception that prescription medications are safer and less harmful or addictive than illegal drugs.

The challenges we’ve had to face this year due to the public health care crisis mean many of us are suffering from the effects of extreme stress and anxiety.

Prolonged stress affects every aspect of our lives, from our emotions, behaviors, how we think, and of course, our physical health.

Stress can contribute to the misuse of prescription and over-the-counter medications to try and eliminate or decrease the severity of symptoms such as insomnia, depression, anxiety, and pain.

That is why at Altus Emergency Centers, we are working to raise awareness of the dangers of medicine abuse.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Preventing Medicine Abuse

These are some ways we can help prevent accidental or deliberate prescription drug overdoses in our home.

Don’t Hoard Medications and Keep Them Out of Children’s Reach

Many of us are guilty of saving unused medications in our medicine cabinet, yet this habit can have dire consequences.

Hoarding medications at home increases the risk of taking expired medications, which can have serious side effects.

Prescription drug addiction among children is growing. Make sure you speak to your kids about the dangers of taking drugs, even prescription drugs for non-medical purposes.

It would be best if you disposed of your unused medicines through drug take-back programs. Ask your pharmacist if they have such a plan in place.

Only Take Medication as Prescribed and Never Self-Medicate

It’s critical to adhere to your doctor’s instructions when taking prescription medications. For over-the-counter medicines, you should always follow the indications of the manufacturer.

The one thing you should avoid is self-medicating. If you feel unwell, call your doctor, visit our ER, or speak to your pharmacist or another trained medical professional. Don’t take medications based on friends or family’s suggestions and avoid miracle cures advertised on websites.

Look for Alternatives When Possible

If you feel stressed, anxious, or experiencing pain, rather than reach for the medicine cabinet several times a day, try to find alternative ways to deal with your situation.

Join a support group at your local church or speak to a friend about how you feel. Try getting a massage or do stretching exercises every day to help ease your pain.

National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month

What to Do In Case of an Accidental Overdose

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accidental overdoses are a leading cause of death among people between 35 and 54.

A drug overdose occurs when we take too much over-the-counter medicine or prescription medication. It can also happen if we take several prescription or over-the-counter drugs at the same time or if we combine them with alcohol.

Symptoms of an overdose can range from mild to life-threatening. Mild symptoms include slurred speech, drowsiness, and unsteadiness.

Severe and life-threatening symptoms require immediate medical attention. Call 911 and ask to be taken to the nearest Altus Emergency Center if you notice the following symptoms:

  • Breathing problems
  • Hallucinations
  • Delusions
  • Seizures
  • Tremors
  • Vomiting
  • Unconsciousness

Altus Emergency Centers is here to help you overcome any medical emergency, including drug overdose. When you visit us, we will treat you like family because, to us, you are. We care about your well-being. If you are struggling with stress, anxiety, or drug addiction, we urge you to please reach out and seek help.

Pumpkin Carving Safety Tips for Halloween

Pumpkin Carving Safety Tips

Fall is here, y’all! That means it’s pumpkin carving season!

Pumpkin carving is a favorite family fall tradition for many of us. From going out to the pumpkin patch, to selecting the perfect orange spheres.  Then, on to picking the scariest faces to carve into them.  Creating a unique Jack O’Lantern to light up your porch is a fun activity for everyone in your family!

However, this fun family activity can be hazardous; after all, you need to use sharp objects to make these spooky creations.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported 4,500 Halloween-related injuries treated in the ER in 2018. Of these, 27% included lacerations, ingestions, and other wounds associated with pumpkins, decorations, or costumes.

44% of Halloween-related injuries are from pumpkin carving.

Most of the injuries we see from pumpkin carving related accidents are stab wounds to the hand either in the fingers or the palm. Some stab wounds are severe enough to cause damage to tendons, nerves, or puncture an artery. We also see many cuts that require stitches.

To avoid getting hurt and having to pay us an unscheduled visit, we’ve put together a list of simple safety tips for you and your family.

Use a Pumpkin Carving Kit

Purchase a pumpkin carving kit at your local convenience store or purchase one online. They are relatively inexpensive and much safer than using a regular kitchen knife.

One of the biggest problems with using a sharp knife is that it often gets stuck in the thick skin of the pumpkin, and it requires force to remove it, which increases the chances of the knife slipping or cutting through to the other side where your hand might be holding the pumpkin.

Carving kits, on the other hand, have specially designed tools that can saw through the tough skin, poke holes, and scoop out the seeds. What is unique about these tools is that although they get the job done, they are not razor-sharp.

Leave The Top on While Carving

Most of us make the mistake of removing the top of the pumpkin along with the seeds before we start carving.

However, this can be dangerous as you will be tempted to place your hand inside the pumpkin to hold it while cutting out the face features. With your hand inside, if your tool slips you run the risk of cutting yourself.

Instead of removing the top, try cutting out the bottom of the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds. This way you can later place the Jack O’Lanter on top of the battery-operated light to illuminate it.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Don’t Let Kids Carve

You can include the smallest members of your household by having them help scoop out the innards and select the Jack O’Lantern stencil design, or have them draw the face themselves.

The one thing you should never allow is for kids to handle sharp objects. If you have adolescents and you want to teach them how to carve, make sure there is always an adult closely supervising their work.

Always Cut Away From Your Hands

Proper cutting techniques may seem obvious, but when you are trying to get your carving done fast you may forget to check where your hands are.

Remember knives, and other carving tools are bound to slip at some point, and if you are not careful your fingers might be in the way, and you could get seriously hurt.

If You Get Hurt, Come to Altus Emergency Centers ASAP!

Even when you try to be careful, pumpkin carving accidents can still happen. If you get hurt and your wound is deep, or you can’t get it to stop bleeding you need medical attention.

Deep wounds need to be thoroughly cleaned by a medical professional, and you will probably require antibiotics to prevent infections.

At Altus Emergency Centers, we are all about family traditions, and pumpkin carving is at the heart of the fall season. This Halloween season make sure your pumpkin carving activities are fun and safe for everyone.

ER Nurses Week 2020 – Front Line Heroes

Happy ER Nurses Week 2020!  Celebrating our Front Line Heroes

Today we kick off a much-needed celebration honoring those in the front lines, ER Nurses Week 2020.  It takes a special heart to become a nurse, but an extraordinary soul to go into the emergency nurse profession.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,  this year has been a particularly challenging and revealing year for ER nurses across the globe.  More than ever before, the vital role of healthcare professionals including the ER nurses has been at the focus of our lives.  We see them on the news and when we go to the doctor, but we can’t begin to understand the amazing sacrifices they make each day in honor of caring for our health.

Just like you and I, ER Nurses are Real People.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, real people feel fear, get tired, frustrated, anxious, and even depressed.  However, the ER Nurse has to put aside their fears and remain strong and focused to care for their patients.  Armed with their PPE gear, they bravely continue on tirelessly and unite with their healthcare coworkers as a tribe to keep pushing forward.  Yes, they miss their families and their families miss and worry about them but understand the importance of their mission.  Still, this is not their biggest concern during Nurses Week 2020.  Like many other healthcare professions, ER nurses are concerned about patients greatly needing emergency care staying away from hospitals and emergency rooms out of worry that they could become ill.  Some individuals will have chest pains for days before getting treatment.  On behalf of Altus ER Nurses, we want everyone to understand the following:

You will be safe coming to any Altus facility.  We are open 24/7, offering safe private rooms.  You will not come into contact with any other patient.  We offer Free Medical Screening, do COVID-19 testing & accept Medicare. There is no good reason to stay at home when you need ER care.  Do not risk your life. Get ER Care.

Altus is proud to celebrate Emergency Nurses Week along with the most talented and dedicated group of ER Nurses ever assembled. While we are grateful every day for the hard work these professionals do, this week we take special care to honor their dedication and commitment to helping patients.

A Look Back into ER Nurses Day From Previous Years

As you can see, at Altus, we have been celebrating ER Nurses Week since we first opened.  You may recognize some of the smiling faces.  This year, we will be releasing updated photos and videos of our ER Nurses.  The difference may be the PPE gear, the glowing smile underneath will still be the same.  Happy ER Nurses Week 2020!  Now, let’s explore, why these special ladies and gentlemen deserve our appreciation.  We will overcome the COVID-19, but there will always be battles to fight.  May we never forget to honor these brave individuals on the front lines of healthcare.

Why Do Emergency Nurses Deserve Special Appreciation?

Nurses across the country do exemplary work. However, emergency nurses deserve special recognition because the environment in which they must work requires quick thinking and nerves of steel.

The Emergency Room staff needs to make split-second life or death decisions. Nurses are often the first person a patient sees when they enter our Emergency Room. These people are often in severe pain, shock, and scared. The reassurance, compassion, and empathy of ER nurses make all the difference to these patients and their families.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Role of ER Nurses

Every day, emergency nurses must tackle diverse tasks with professionalism, efficiency, and above all—caring.

Patient-Care: Working at an emergency center means ER nurses will need to care for a wide range of injuries and illnesses. Some might be mild emergencies, while others may involve trauma, heart attacks, or traumatic brain injuries. The wide variety of patient conditions requires that ER nurses have specialized training and qualifications. In addition, a strong character that can keep its cool in extremely stressful situations is indispensable.

Education: The nurses at Altus are outstanding members of the communities that we serve. As such, they are always available to help us promote our wellness programs, and educate the public on how to prevent injuries. Additionally, nurses are the most prominent advocates for patients who visit our ER centers. Not only do they assist the patient during their stay at our facilities, but they also explain the care needed to ensure a speedy recovery once the patient goes home.

Leadership: Part of the company culture at Altus focuses on working as a unit. Our nurses are perhaps the best liaisons in our organization. They work closely with administrators, lab technicians, doctors, and of course, patients. Because of this, emergency room nurses must have strong leadership skills that allow them to build solid relationships with every member of our team.

A Special Thank You to Our Invaluable Nurses

At Altus Health which includes Altus Baytown ER, Altus ER Lake Jackson, Altus Lumberton Hospital, and Altus ER Waxahachie, we know the quality of the people that work with us. Moreover, every patient we see gets a chance to meet the most amazing, professional, and caring nurses ever!

Our organization could not provide the care needed by our communities, were it not for the hard work and dedication that our nurses put into every minute of their workday.

These brave, compassionate angels help us save lives every day, and we could not be more proud and grateful to have them by our side.

To all of you who give so much to both patients and colleagues, “Thank You” from the bottom of our hearts for a job well done!

What does it take to be considered one of the best places to live and raise a family in Texas? For starters, you need to have excellent schools, lots of fun activities for the whole family, safe neighborhoods, and outstanding neighbors.

No wonder Midlothian made the shortlist of best places to live in Texas!

This historically rich town has beautiful neighborhoods that offer residents a rural feel while still being close to city amenities. There are also great job opportunities in the “Cement Capital of Texas” that, paired with their great educational system, paints a bright future for the city.

TRICARE ER Family Care – We Care for Our Military and Their Families

We Care for Our Military and Their Families

The very nature of the job of a military person means they will face daily challenges. However, no service member should ever have to worry about their healthcare needs or those of his family being met, especially during an emergency.  It shouldn’t be a challenge to find TRICARE ER Family Care.

A report by news agency Reuters explains how a study revealed how American families with military healthcare are more likely to experience difficulties with healthcare access.

If you are looking for TRICARE ER Family Care, you’ve found it!  Altus Emergency Centers has been a proud TRICARE provider for many years. We believe our brave men and women in uniform should receive the best emergency medical care possible. That is why all our locations accept TRICARE patients.

The following are some frequently asked questions to help shed light on TRICARE ER Family Care and coverage for veterans, active military, and their families.

Does Your TRICARE Healthcare Plan Cover Emergency Care?

Yes!

TRICARE emergency care coverage includes professional and institutional charges as well as services and supplies administered or prescribed in the emergency room.

TRICARE is very clear that in the event of a medical emergency, you should call 911 and visit an ER, not an urgent care clinic.

Moreover, emergency room care does not require prior authorization. However, TRICARE Prime plan members must contact their primary care provider within 24 hours or the next business day after receiving emergency care at one of our ER centers.

What Does TRICARE Consider an Emergency?

TRICARE covers three types of medical emergencies:

Medical Emergency

TRICARE defines a medical emergency as the sudden and unexpected onset of an illness or injury or the worsening of a chronic condition that:

  • Is life-threatening,
  • Could cause the loss or severe impairment of a limb or eyesight
  • Requires immediate medical attention
  • Manifests painful symptoms requiring medical care to alleviate suffering

These are some examples of medical emergencies covered by TRICARE:

  • Cardiac Arrest (No pulse)
  • Injuries with Severe Bleeding
  • Spinal Cord, Neck or Back injuries
  • Severe Chest Pain
  • Severe Eye Injuries
  • Broken Bone
  • Trouble Breathing

Maternity Emergency

A maternity emergency applies to any circumstance that results in a medical complication which puts the mother or baby at risk.

Mental Health Emergencies

TRICARE patients diagnosed with a mental disorder can visit our ER when they are thought to be a risk to themselves or others.

Emergency room care does not require prior authorization. However, if the patient is admitted to the hospital as a result of their psychiatric emergency, the incident must be reported to the regional contractor within 24 hours of admission and no more than 72 hours after admission.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Are Pediatric Emergencies Covered?

TRICARE offers several healthcare plans some of which include benefits for family members including children.

  • TRICARE Prime: This is available to active duty and retired service members and their families
  • TRICARE Select: Active duty and retired service members and their families as well as active and non-active reserve, and retired reserve members and their families are eligible
  • TRICARE For Life: Available for beneficiaries who have Medicare Part A and B
  • TRICARE Reserve Select: Intended for members of the Selected Reserve and their families. Recipients must meet certain qualifications
  • TRICARE Retired Select: Available to qualified Retired Reserve members and their families
  • TRICARE Young Adult: This plan is for unmarried or adult children of an eligible sponsor. Beneficiaries must be at least 21 years of age and no older than 26

For more information on TRICARE healthcare plans, please visit: https://tricare.mil/Plans/HealthPlans

TRICARE members can trust their children’s emergency care to us. All our Emergency Centers have certified pediatric emergency physicians and nurses on staff 24/7 to attend pediatric emergencies. We also provide separate, dedicated pediatric examining rooms and equipment.

At Altus Emergency Centers, we strongly believe the members of our military deserve the best. We provide them the peace of mind of knowing their loved ones are safe and cared for with compassion by professionals who care.

For this reason, we provide the best emergency care to all members of our military branches and their families.

Child Passenger Safety Week

Child Passenger Safety Week

Every day, parents and caregivers drive young children to and from school, daycare, the store, doctor’s appointments, and around town in car seats and boosters.

What you probably don’t realize is that nearly half of all car seats are incorrectly installed. This means your child may not be traveling as safely as possible.

That is why observing Child Passenger Safety Week is so important.

Danger on the Road

According to the United States Department of Transportation, in 2018, every 32 seconds, a child under the age of 13 traveling as a passenger in a vehicle was involved in a crash.

Furthermore, between 2013 and 2017, 3,313 children under 13 killed were killed while riding in passenger vehicles. In 2018 the death toll reached 636.

These alarming statistics help explain why traffic accidents are a leading cause of death for children in our country.

Child Passenger Safety Week

Reducing the Risk

Car and booster seats, when installed correctly, are proven to help keep children safe while riding in the car. Studies show that car seats can reduce the risk of fatal injury for infants by 71% and 54% for toddlers.

Unfortunately, many of us don’t know how to install a car seat correctly. Thankfully there are ways we can help improve our children’s safety.

Get a Professional to Check Your Car Seat

The best way to know if you’ve installed your car seat correctly is to have a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician check it.

These professionals can also answer questions for you this way; you can be confident you are using the car seat correctly.

If you don’t know a certified child passenger safety technician, you use this simple search tool to locate one nearby.

Child Passenger Safety Week

Don’t Forget to Register Your Car Seat

When you purchase a car seat or a booster seat, make sure you register it with the manufacturer. All seats come with a postage-paid registration card for you to mail, or you can also register your purchase online.

Doing so will ensure the manufacturer will notify you if they find a manufacturing defect. This way, you can either get your seat repaired or replaced.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Use the Right Seat

Finding the right seat for your child is extremely important. As children grow, they will need to transition to a more size appropriate seat.

If you are not sure, check to make sure you’re using the right car seat, booster seat for your growing child.

What to Do If Your Child is in a Car Accident

Even minor car accidents can cause severe injuries in young children. Therefore, even if you don’t see any visible trauma, it’s best to visit the nearest Altus Emergency Center.

The impact could cause concussions and sprains that could go undetected and possibly cause complications later on.

For your peace of mind, all our locations have pediatric examining rooms and specially trained physicians and nurses to help take care of your child. Our staff will care for your child as if it were their own because, at Altus, you are family.

Did you know that Insurance Companies Must Cover ER Trips Involving Traffic Accidents?

Yes!  It’s important to remember that insurance companies are obligated to offer emergency room coverage in their policies. If you are involved in a car accident and need to go to the emergency room, your insurance policy will cover your visit.

Some injuries are more time-sensitive than others, in these cases it is better to transfer the patient to a ER facility such as any of the Altus Emergency Centers where they can be treated by a licensed emergency physician right away, rather than transport them to a Hospital ER where their treatment might be delayed due to overcrowding issues.

Proudly Serving Midlothian, One of the Best Communities in Texas

Proudly Serving Midlothian, One of the Best Communities in Texas

What does it take to be considered one of the best places to live and raise a family in Texas? For starters, you need to have excellent schools, lots of fun activities for the whole family, safe neighborhoods, and outstanding neighbors.

No wonder Midlothian made the shortlist of best places to live in Texas!

This historically rich town has beautiful neighborhoods that offer residents a rural feel while still being close to city amenities. There are also great job opportunities in the “Cement Capital of Texas” that, paired with their great educational system, paints a bright future for the city.

The one thing the city of Midlothian was missing was top-rated emergency care. But that all changed in 2017 when Altus Emergency Centers opened their location in Waxahachie, providing world-class emergency care to all surrounding communities, including the residents of Midlothian.

Family Values and Top-Rated Medical Care Go Hand in Hand

At Altus Emergency Centers, we are proud to serve the community of Midlothian.  Much like the residents of this beautiful town, we built our organization on sound family values.

Our values are what inspired us to do things a little differently. We hire locally because we firmly believe nobody will take better care of you than family. When you walk through our doors, you will be greeted by the most talented medical professionals who happen to be your neighbors as well.

At Altus, we provide more than just excellent medical care; we provide support for our patients and their families. We work with you every step of the way to help get you back to health in an affordable way.

We hope that Midlothian would keep trusting us for your medical care!

  • State of the art facility with the most advanced technology
  • Affordable care

Location

We are just 10-minutes away!

As a patient, you shouldn’t have to leave your area to receive quality emergency medical attention.

That is why we made sure our facility is just a short drive away from you. We understand all too well how crucial early treatment is. Quick diagnosis and fast access to treatment can mark the difference between a full recovery and long-lasting health issues or even death.

Use our online check-in form to let us know you are on your way, and our medical staff will be ready and waiting for you at the door when you arrive.

Quick, Convenient, Quality Emergency Care for All

We provide world-class emergency care to patients of all ages, including children. Our certified doctors and nurses are available 24/7 every day of the year.

We promise there will never be a time when you come in, and we won’t have a physician on staff ready to care for you.

Another one of our guarantees is no wait lines. At Altus, you won’t spend hours in the waiting room. Instead, when you arrive, you will be transferred to a private room where a doctor will come to examine you within minutes.

The staff of Altus Waxahachie is always on call and ready to offer a helping hand, that is why you will never see indifference in our ER.

We understand the urgency of your situation, and we will do everything to offer care and support and get you back to feeling happy and healthy again.

Affordable Care

World-class emergency care doesn’t have to be expensive.

At Altus, one of the ways we’ve revolutionized ER services is by taking control of the entire billing process.

We’ve hired doctors to work directly with us, which allowed us to negotiate physician fees down, making it more affordable for you.

We’ve simplified our billing process to make it easier for you and your family to understand your bill.

At Altus ER Waxachie, we believe in simplicity, transparency, and honesty. Unlike other ER’s we won’t send you separate bills for services such as radiology and lab tests.

You will only receive two bills from us; one will detail all the ER services you received. The other will show the doctor’s fees, which, as we said before, are significantly lower than those charged at other ER’s.

Have Questions About Your Bill? We Can Help!

If you receive a medical bill from us and have any questions associated with it, we urge you to please reach out to our friendly, expert Patient Advocate Lendall Baker.

He is here to help ensure you get the most from your insurance coverage.  Please call or email him now if you have recently received a medical bill.

Over the last three years, Altus ER Waxahachie has become an active member of the community of Midlothian.

We are grateful and honored for the opportunity you have given us to serve you, and we look forward to growing alongside the needs of the community.

Preparing for Hurricane Season During COVID-19

How to Prepare for Hurricane Season During COVID-19

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) this year, we will potentially have a:

“Busy Atlantic hurricane season for 2020”

During an average hurricane season, we could potentially have 13 to 19 storms.  Six to ten of which could become hurricanes with winds of 74 mph or higher and three to six potentially becoming major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or higher.

In Texas, we are no strangers to hurricane season.  However, this particular year, we have an extra element added into the mix which is COVID-19.

With such an active hurricane season, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to be prepared is highly important. Here is a helpful guide to help you get organized and prepared in case of a hurricane disaster.

Do Not Forget That We are Still in the Middle of a Pandemic

Please keep in mind:  Symptoms, Prevention & Treatments.  Follow all state and local guidelines in order to not only keep yourself safe, but keep others around you safe as well.  It’s not a time to panic but it is a time to remain vigilant and responsible:

  • Wear a mask
  • Keep your hands clean
  • Maintain a safe distance

At Altus, We Are Safe, Prepared and Open 24/7 Before, During & After Storms & Hurricanes

When planning for hurricane season during 2020, it’s equally crucial to know where to go in case of an emergency.  At Altus, we ensure that we have taken all necessary precautions to ensure that we will remain open 24/7 to care for your medical needs even when other medical facilities shut down.

We’re OPEN 24/7, Before, During & After the Storm

Prepare Your Home Emergency Supply Kit

Should a hurricane make landfall in our area, roads will be flooded or blocked by debris, power lines, and water supply pipes may be damaged, leaving us no choice but to stay home.

Having an emergency supply kit is essential to survive at home during a disaster.

What to include in your Emergency Supply Kit?

Your supplies should last at least two weeks, and should include:

  • Easy to prepare nonperishable food
  • Drinking water, you should have one gallon per person per day
  • Flashlight
  • Extra batteries
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Cell phone with chargers
  • Disinfectant
  • Soap and other personal hygiene products
  • Hand sanitizer
  • First Aid Kit
  • Copies of personal documents make sure to include a list of medications you are taking and any illnesses or allergies you have
  • Emergency contact numbers of family, friends, and local authorities
  • Emergency blankets
  • Extra cash

Evacuation Emergency Kit

Have an evacuation emergency kit ready in case you need to leave your home. Prepare your go-bag in advance; make sure to include food and water supply to last at least 3-day.

To help protect yourself and your family from COVID-19, make sure you include:

  • Reusable face coverings for everyone in your family, however, these are not recommended for children under age 2
  • Hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and other personal hygiene items
  • A change of clothes
  • Emergency blankets
  • A 1-month supply of any prescription medication you take

Medications

If you take any medications, you should speak to your doctor to ensure you have a one-month prescription on hand in case of a disaster. Remember, many pharmacies could be closed, and medications may be hard to find.

Also, prepare to have over the counter medications at home, including cough syrup, pain killers, and fever-reducing drugs.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Updating Your Disaster Plan

You may already have a disaster plan in place from previous years; however, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, some shelters may no longer be available.

Make sure to contact your local authorities to obtain an updated list of shelters in your area.

Stay Informed

  • Subscribe to weather apps to receive updated weather information.
  • Follow social media accounts of community leaders and agencies to receive emergency alerts
  • Learn the jargon used in emergencies, for example; a “watch” means you should get ready to act; a warning means you should spring into action immediately.

Stay or Go

If your local authorities recommend evacuation, don’t hesitate. Grab your emergency evacuation kit, gather your family, including your pets and leave.

Make sure you have a list of shelters available in your community or have plans to stay with family or friends outside the affected area.

Make sure you have a planned route for how to get to your safe place that includes alternate routes.

Set a place where you and your family can meet in case everyone is not home at the time of the evacuation.

Altus Emergency Centers will always be here for you and your family. We stayed open during hurricane Harvey, and we will remain open should another similar disaster impact our community.

Stay in Shape Safely During the Pandemic

Stay in Shape Safely During the Pandemic

These past few months have been a roller coaster of emotions brought on by the public health crisis our nation is facing.

Most of us have gone through initial feelings of concern to now feeling anxious, frustrated, sad, and even angry with the situation. And these feelings are not only affecting adults; they are impacting our children as well.

While the extensive physical distancing policies put in place to the slow the spread of COVID-19 are necessary, our bodies and minds still need exercise to stay healthy.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

The Benefits of Exercise

There is a direct relationship between health, diet, and exercise. Maintaining a healthy diet is essential when it comes to our physical, mental, and even social well-being. Yet regular physical activity is equally important.

Having a sedentary lifestyle can increase our risk of developing chronic diseases and permanent loss of movement. Additionally, a lack of physical activity can also harm our immune health and lead to weight gain.

On the other hand, regular aerobic exercise helps improve our mood, boost our confidence and self-image, improve our sleep quality, and relieve stress.

For these reasons, keeping active during the coronavirus pandemic is essential.

Tips for The Whole Family to Exercise at Home

When you think of starting a workout routine at home, you should also consider including your children. Physical activity has proven to improve a child’s physical health, as well as provide cognitive and emotional benefits, including enhancing their attention span and mental and emotional well-being.

Set Realistic Goals

Sure, most of us wish we could compete in a triathlon or become a high performing athlete. But one of the top reasons starting a workout routine fails is because we set unrealistic goals.

Setting unattainable short-term goals can crush your family’s motivation. So, start by setting small, easily attainable goals. Make sure to include your kids in the conversation to learn what they wish to attain.

Here are some examples of easy goals to set when you first begin:

  • Go for a 30-minute walk around the neighborhood as a family at least five days a week. You can increase the length of your outings progressively.
  • Do three sets of 15 jumping jacks or squats every day. Increase the number the sets as your physical condition improves
  • Hold a plank position for 30 seconds, increase this progressively and make it a competition to see who can hold it the longest

If your primary purpose is to lose weight, don’t make the mistake of saying I want to lose 50, 60, or 100 pounds. Slow, steady weight loss provides the most benefits, and it can help you keep the weight off longer.

A good starting point is to set a monthly weight loss goal of 5-10 pounds. Meaning you will lose 1-2 pounds per week, which is very achievable.

The practice of setting small achievable goals can help motivate you and your family and start you on the path of creating long-term healthy habits.

Stay in Shape Safely During the Pandemic

Make it Fun

Most of us think of exercise as a necessary evil. We’ve programmed ourselves to think of it as an unpleasant chore on our to-do lists.

But physical activity should and can be fun and enjoyable for everyone in the family. The first thing you should do is add variety to your workouts. If you always do the same exercises, then you will get bored, so include both outdoor and indoor activities. From riding a bike, walking, or swimming if you have a pool, to joining an online workout program you can do from home.

Make sure to include activities that promote flexibility and stretching, as this can help increase your balance and prevent injuries.

Here Are Some Ideas for At Home Physical Activities for You and Your Kids

  • Exercises that use your body weight, such as push-ups, pull-ups, planks, and mountain climbers
  • Yoga
  • Jumping Jacks
  • Dancing – Put on your favorite songs and do a dance-off
  • Balancing on one foot – Helps improve balance and muscle strength
  • Hopscotch -You can either use tape or chalk on your floor, driveway, or patio
  • Fill up a balloon or beach ball and don’t let it touch the ground
  • Crab walk or bear crawl races
  • Jump rope
  • Do a Hula Hoop contest

Pace Yourself

To help prevent injuries, we recommend you start slow and increase both the length and intensity of your workouts progressively.

Trying to do too much at once not only increases your risk of getting injured it can also frustrate your efforts.

Stay in Shape Safely During the Pandemic

Common Exercise Injuries and What to Do About Them

It’s worth mentioning that a workout injury can happen to anyone. Regardless if you are starting or if you are avid gym-goer injuries are part of life so don’t get discouraged if you suffer one.

Common workout injuries include:

  • Muscle pull and strain
  • Sprained ankle
  • Wrist sprain or dislocation
  • Shin splint
  • Shoulder injury
  • Knee injuries
  • Tendinitis

If you or your kids get injured while exercising and you experience severe pain, difficulty moving the joint, or have acute inflammation, don’t wait. Visit the nearest Altus Emergency Center to be evaluated by a physician.

All our centers are open, and we follow strict safety protocols. When you visit us, you are in the best hands.
