Altus Gives Scholarship Winners 2022

Altus Gives Scholarship Winners 2022

At Altus Emergency we are delighted to announce the Altus Gives Scholarship Winners 2022! Back in February 2022, we launched our Altus Gives Scholarship Winners 2022 for each of our four locations.  This initiative was done through the Altus Gives program, which was established to help give back to our local businesses and individuals.

Each location held an Altus Gives Scholarship awards program awarding a total of $2000 in scholarships as a one-time payment.  The awards were given to each of the recipients to pursue a career in healthcare.

This award was given to each of the recipients as a check to be exclusively used for expenses related to college such as tuition, fees, books, school supplies, and board.  Individuals could apply through the application form directly from our website up until the March 31st, 2022 deadline.  Then, the winners were selected in April 2022 by a review panel appointed by the management of Altus Emergency Centers.

After having been selected, we coordinated with each of the students’ schools to deliver them the good news.  This is how they reacted to having won the Altus Gives Scholarship Winners 2022.  Get to know each of the Altus Gives Scholarship Winners of 2022!

Tips to Keep Your Kids Safe from Respiratory Illnesses

Tips to Keep Your Kids Safe from Respiratory Illnesses

Flu season is anything but over; in fact, the CDC reported just last week that they’d seen an increase in cases across most of the country.

Flu and other respiratory viruses can attack at any time. However, we usually see a decrease in cases this time of year as the weather warms up, so this rise in cases is unexpected.

As a parent, you want to do everything in your power to protect your child from any harm, including illnesses. So, we’ve prepared a list of helpful tips you can use to keep your children healthy.

Check out our Great Tips to Keep Your Kids Safe from Respiratory Illnesses

Instill Healthy Hygiene Habits

The first order of business needs to be discussing the importance of good hygiene with your children. After this, teach them a few simple ways they can use to keep unwanted germs and viruses from spreading.

Here are some examples:

Sneezing into the Bend of Your Elbow – if your child doesn’t have a tissue, tell them to sneeze into the elbow bend rather than their hands. This way, it will be harder for germs to spread.

Throw Tissues Away After Using Them – Paper tissues are single-use! Instruct your child to throw the tissue into the trashcan after blowing their nose, sneezing, or wiping away mucus.secondhand smoke raises the risk of ear infections, lower respiratory infections, other respiratory problems in children.

child sneezing into elboy

Wash Your Hands – Kids need to wash their hands often, especially after playing with other children, riding the bus, or being in public places. Teach your kids to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If handwashing isn’t possible, then use a hand sanitizer.

Avoid Touching Your Face Unnecessarily – The average person touches their face 23 times an hour, and children are likely doing so more often. Train your children to avoid touching their nose, mouth, and eyes to help prevent respiratory illnesses.

  • If Possible, Avoid Sharing Toys, Crayons, Scissors, and Other School Materials – If your child must share school supplies, make sure they know to wash their hands once they finish using them.

Eat a Healthily

Nutrition is the basis for good health. Therefore, make sure your family gets plenty of veggies and fruits which are packed with vitamins to help them stay healthy.

Replace unhealthy snacks with fruits and nuts. You can even combine them; how does a sliced apple with a bit of peanut butter sound? Yum!

Keep Your Kids Well Hydrated

When it comes to keeping your child healthy, hydration needs to be a big part.

Here is how much your child should drink each day:

  • 1 to 3 years old – need 3 to 4 cups of liquid
  • 4 to 7 years old – need 5 cups of liquid
  • 8 and older – need 8 cups of liquid

Water is the best option, but you can also offer them milk and fruit juices without added sugar. Please remember, if your child is out playing in the sun, they may need more hydration.

Get Plenty of Sleep

Sleep is the foundation of good health. Children who get adequate sleep have healthier immune systems that help protect them from respiratory illnesses.

When to go to the ER

Regardless of how much you try to protect your child, viral infections are sometimes inevitable. In most cases, your child can recover safely at home, but you need to seek medical help if complications arise.

Please come to the nearest Altus Emergency Center if you notice any of the following:

  • Your child has trouble breathing
  • They are gasping for air or wheezing when they breathe

Toddler Ear Infection Prevention, Symptoms

Toddler Ear Infection Prevention, Symptoms & When to go to the ERs

Ear infections in toddlers are extremely common, and they can develop at any moment. Often, they happen during the weekend or late at night, where getting a hold of your pediatrician isn’t so easy.

If your little one develops symptoms of an ear infection, here’s how to make sure you get them the best medical care.

Preventing Ear Infections

The best way to deal with an ear infection is to prevent it from happening. Here are some steps you can take to help decrease the risk of your little one developing an ear infection.

  • Vaccinate your child: Vaccinations help reduce the risk of bacterial infections, including ear infections. So, make sure to keep up to date with your children’s vaccination schedule
  • Breastfeed your baby: Breast milk provides essential antibodies that may help reduce the risk of an ear infection and other illnesses. When feeding your baby, place them in a sit-up position to prevent milk and other fluids from flowing into the middle ear.
  • Wash your hands: Infections result from exposure to viruses and bacteria. The best way to protect your child is by frequently washing your hands and theirs with soap and water for a full 20 seconds.
  • Stay away from sick people: If possible, try to keep your children away from others who are ill.
  • Beware of secondhand smoke: Exposure to secondhand smoke raises the risk of ear infections, lower respiratory infections, other respiratory problems in children.

Symptoms of an Ear Infection in Babies and Toddlers

About 50% of children will have had at least one ear infection by their second birthday. But because they may not be able to express what they are feeling, it’s important to know what symptoms to look out for so you can get them the help they need.

The best telltale sign of an ear infection is a pain in or around the ear. However, that is not the only symptom. The following signs will help you determine if their symptoms are those of an ear infection.

  • Pulling or tugging at their ear
  • Your child is inconsolable, irritable, and continues to cry
  • They have difficulty sleeping
  • They have a fever
  • You notice fluid draining from their ear
  • You see, they are having a hard time hearing
  • Loss of balance

When to go to the ER

Your child needs immediate medical attention when:

  • They develop a high fever that won’t go down with medication
  • They are clearly in severe pain
  • They become lethargic – you have a hard time waking them up, they are slow to respond, or seem unusually inactive or sleepy
  • They have trouble eating or drinking or refuse to do so
  • They are dehydrated – They are not urinating normally, they don’t shed tears when crying, or you notice their lips are dry cracked
  • You see bloody or pus-like discharge coming out of their ears

At Altus Emergency Centers, we have pediatric examining rooms designed to make the experience of a visit to the ER less scary.

Our doctors and nurses will take care of your child as if it were their own and help get them healthy again.

What is Croup? Prevention, Signs & When to go to the ER

What is Croup?

Prevention, Signs & When to go to the ER

If you notice your child suddenly develops a barking cough, has trouble breathing, or makes a whistling sound when breathing, it could be croup.

Most cases of this illness are mild, but the condition can be serious, especially in infants and young children.

What Is Croup?

Croup is a respiratory infection caused by different viruses. The illness causes the upper airways to swell, making breathing difficult.

The condition usually affects children under five and can last between five and six days. However, complications such as ear infections and pneumonia can happen.

Way to Prevent the Spread of Croup

Like other viral respiratory infections, croup can spread through physical contact or the air. The following tips can help prevent the spread of croup in your household and community.

  • Wash your hands before and after caring for your baby or young child
  • Wash toys frequently, especially if your children share them with others
  • Urge your child to cover their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing
  • Avoid sending your child to school or daycare if they are ill or when the school informs you of an outbreak
  • Teach your children the proper way to wash their hands and when to wash them
  • Throw away used tissues

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

What are the Symptoms of Croup?

At first, your child may have cold-like symptoms like a runny nose, congestion, and a slight cough. But over time, the cough worsens, sounding like a barking seal. Their voice can become hoarse, and they can also start making a high-pitch, wheezing sound when they breathe in.

The loud cough and wheezing sounds when breathing result from inflammation in the voice box, windpipe, and upper airways, which make it hard to breathe.

Croup can also cause your child to breathe very fast or have what is known as retractions; this happens when the skin pulls tight around their ribs.

In severe cases, the sick child may look pale or have a bluish color around their mouth due to a lack of oxygen; if you notice this, please call 911 immediately.

Croup can cause redness around the eyes, a rash, and swollen lymph nodes in babies. In addition, some children may develop a fever.

Symptoms of croup tend to worsen at night or when your child becomes upset or is crying.

Warning Signs of When to Call 911 or Head to the Nearest ER

Thankfully, most cases of croup are mild, and you can safely treat them at home. However, always listen to your intuition if you think your child’s illness is serious.

The following are signs of an emergency, and you should seek medical help for them as soon as possible:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Fast or labored breathing
  • Retractions (when the skin around the ribcage sucks inward while breathing)
  • Trouble swallowing
  • High-pitched noise when taking breaths
  • Unusual paleness or bluish color around their mouth

Dehydration is another danger associated with croup. Please head to the nearest ER if you notice your child is not urinating or if they have very dark urine.

Other warning signs of dehydration include:

  • Your baby sheds no tears when crying
  • Dry mouth
  • Sunken eyes
  • Exhaustion

If you feel your child needs immediate medical help to improve their breathing, don’t hesitate to bring them to the nearest Altus Emergency Center. We have special pediatric examing rooms and qualified medical staff to care for your baby.

Winter Safety Tips for Kids

Winter Safety Tips for Kids

The recent winter storms have taken many of us by surprise. Unfortunately, when the weather suddenly turns cold, kids face new dangers that we as parents need to be aware of so we can protect them.

But just because it’s cold outside, it doesn’t mean our young ones can’t enjoy themselves. These winter safety tips will help keep your children warm and healthy through the cold weather season.

The Power of Layers

Keeping your child warm is the number one priority. If your children are playing outside or going to school, make sure to dress them in layers. This way, they can remove their coats while inside and still be comfortable.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends dressing young children and babies in one more layer than you would wear in the same conditions.

Perfect Time to Accessorise

We’re not talking about your kids becoming fashion icons, although they can if they want to. But cold-weather accessories like gloves, scarfs, and warm boots are an excellent way to keep them comfortable

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Beware of Clothing Hazards

Avoid using clothing with strings or ties like hoodies on small children as these can pose a choking hazard. If you can’t find options without them, then remove the strings, cords, or ties.

Scarfs can also be a hazard for young children. To keep them warm, try using neck warmers instead of scarves.

Additionally, if the weather is cold and damp, make sure to remove wet clothes and shoes immediately. Staying in wet garments can lead to hypothermia.

Bring the Fun Indoors

If the weather is frigid, it’s best to bring the fun indoors. Try to limit the time your kids play outside, and instead think of fun activities for them to do at home. For example, try baking cookies with them, or doing family game night.

Make Your Home a Safe Haven

Your home needs to be a warm and cozy refuge for your family, which means taking all necessary precautions.

During cold weather, you need to beware of carbon monoxide poisoning. To avoid a tragedy, please check your heating devices to make sure they are working correctly and not emitting dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

Just as important, take all necessary measures to prevent an accidental burn injury. Place a barrier around fireplaces such as baby gates to prevent burns.

Wear Sunscreen and Keep Hydrated

Children can still get sunburned during a winter spell, and it’s easy to forget to stay hydrated during these winter spells too.

Make sure to apply sunscreen on their faces before they go outside to avoid skin damage.

Additionally, cold, dry air can lead to your children losing water as they breathe. Therefore, they need to replenish fluids frequently even if they are not sweating. Soups and hot beverages are excellent options to keep them warm and hydrated.

Preventing Colds and Other Respiratory Infections

When the weather outside turns cold, the risk of coming down with a cold or flu also increases. But you can help keep your children safe by:

  • Washing their hands with soap and water regularly
  • Teaching them to cover their mouth and nose when they sneeze or cough
  • Don’t send them to school if they are feeling unwell
  • Keep them away from other sick children

When to Go to the ER

Please bring your child to the nearest Altus ER if you see any of the following symptoms:

  • They are having trouble breathing
  • They have a high fever that won’t come down with medication
  • They fell and hit their head
  • Your baby is not urinating enough
  • Your child is sluggish

Winter is a beautiful time of year. And with a bit of planning and some extra precautions, you and your family can be ready to enjoy it to the fullest.

Altus Emergency Centers will continue to be here for the community helping to save lives. However, we urge you to please do what is in your power to keep your family safe. Remember, prevention is always the best option.

Simple Ways to Prevent Burns and Scalds

Simple Ways to Prevent Burns and Scalds

This year’s Burn Awareness Week theme is Burning Issues in the Kitchen! The purpose of Burn Awareness Week is to raise awareness of the potential dangers of burns accidents at home or the workplace.

How Big is the Problem?

The American Burn Association estimates that close to 486,000 Americans receive treatment for burn-related injuries every year.

  • 3,275 people die every year due to fire and smoke inhalation accidents
  • Burn-related injuries result in 40,000 hospitalizations
  • Scalding is the most common cause of burn injuries in children aged four or younger, accounting for close to 200,000 yearly injuries
  • Close to half of all scalding accidents are due to spilled food or drinks. The other half is the result of scalding tap water or contact with hot objects such as irons, heaters, and stoves
  • An estimated 15,000 children need hospitalization each year for burn-related injuries
  • About 1,100 children die every year from fire and burn injuries

Simple Ways for to You to Prevent Burns and Scalds at Home

Reduce Water Temperature

If you have a water heater at home, check the settings to ensure the water temperature is below 120°F.

The ideal bath water temperature is around 100°F, making sure you always test the water temperature of your shower or bathtub before allowing your child to go in.

Establish No Zones for Your Small Children and Pets

Teach your children to keep a safe distance from the stove, fireplace, grill, space heaters, and radiators.

If you have small children or pets, consider blocking access to the stove and laundry room while cooking or ironing.

Never leave a small child unattended in the kitchen or a room with a fireplace, heater, curling iron, or iron, and always keep these hot devices out of children’s reach.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Test Food Temperature Before Feeding Infants and Small Children

Avoid heating a baby’s bottle in the microwave as the milk might heat unevenly. Additionally, always shake the baby bottle to ensure the contents have an equal temperature and test before feeding your baby.

If you are feeding your young child solid foods, avoid using metal utensils as these can become very hot and scald your child’s mouth.

Avoid Hot Spills

Keep hot drinks and food away from counter or table edges where your child can reach them. Likewise, avoid using tablecloths or placemats that children can pull on and accidentally scald themselves.

When cooking, make sure to position pot handles facing inward towards the rear of the stove. Use the back burners when possible to prevent someone accidentally bumping into it and spilling hot contents.

Avoid cooking, drinking, or carrying hot foods or beverages while holding a child in your arms.

When to Go to The ER

First-degree burns typically don’t require medical attention. However, if you notice blistering and the injury is painful, this is a sign of a deeper burn, most likely second-degree. Third and fourth-degree burns are severe burns, and often the victim doesn’t experience much pain because the burn has damaged the nerves.

If you think you or a loved one suffered third-degree burns, call 911 immediately. Failing to get prompt medical assistance can result in complications including infections, dehydration, nerve damage, shock, and sepsis, a life-threatening condition.

You should rush to the ER if:
  • The burn is on your face
  • The size of the burn is larger than three inches
  • The burn is a result of an electrical shock
  • The pain is progressively getting worse
  • You develop a fever
  • Your injury has a foul smell, or if there is pus oozing from it

How to Keep Young Children Safe from Omicron

How to Keep Young Children Safe from Omicron

Waves of COVID-19 continue to batter the country leaving parents with small children wondering how best to keep their kids safe.

The coronavirus continues to mutate; the current dominant variant is called Omicron. Although it produces milder illness in many cases, it is still straining hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Additionally, Omicron is affecting children more than previous variants.

According to COVID-NET, the hospitalization rate for the week ending on Jan 22 for children aged 0-4 who are still not eligible for the vaccine was 7.1 per 100,000. While the rate for children aged 5-17 was 2.2 per 100,000. Even though these numbers are higher than those seen in past months, the good news is that data shows the hospitalization rate going down.

However, new variants continue to appear; this week, scientists said they were studying a new sub-variant of Omicron detected in various states known as BA. 2.

We still don’t know much about BA. 2, including whether it causes more severe symptoms and spreads faster than other variants or which population is most at risk. Therefore, as parents, we must continue to protect our children.

The increase in pediatric Omicron illnesses and hospitalizations is naturally a source of anxiety if you are a parent. Still, there are ways to help reduce your child’s risk of infection. Here are a few ways you can help keep your children safe from Omicron.

Get Vaccinated

If you have children under the age of 5, one way to help keep them safe is to make sure that all adults and children age five and up in the family are fully vaccinated.

Check Your Children’s Risk Factors

Your family is unique, and therefore the risk factors for your children can be different. However, here are some considerations for you to take into account:

  • Are any of your children immunocompromised, or do they have any illnesses that could increase their risk for severe COVID-19 disease?
  • Are your children under the age of five and therefore not eligible for the vaccine?
  • Are your kids attending in-person classes at school, or do they go to daycare?

Keep in mind that the more contact your children have with people outside of your family, the greater their chances of catching a virus, be it the flu or the coronavirus

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Speak to Your Children

It’s not always easy to explain to small children what is happening, especially when safety guidelines are changing all the time.

But children are fast learners, and they have an enormous capacity to adapt, so don’t underestimate them.

There are several children’s books that can help you approach the subject and make it easier for your kids to understand what is going on.

You can download some of these books for free from The American Psychological Association (APA) website. To check them out, click here.

Continue to Follow All Safety Measures

Teach your children the importance of washing their hands and why they should never touch their faces or eat with dirty hands.

It’s also a good idea to teach them not to share eating utensils or drink out of other children’s glasses. This habit can keep them safe from many illnesses, not just COVID-19.

Buy them size-appropriate masks to wear when safe social distancing is not possible.
