Altus Baytown ER

Our Baytown Imaging Services Expansion Include: CT Scan, X-Rays, and Ultrasound

We have furnished our imaging center with the most technologically advanced diagnostic imaging equipment to provide fast and accurate results.

CT Scan

CT Scan or CAT Scans provide detailed images of the soft tissue, bones, and blood vessels of the body, allowing physicians to diagnose illnesses such as cancer and heart disease as well as internal injuries caused by trauma.

Common Reasons to Get a CT Scan

Physicians may request a CT Scan to:

  • Diagnosing Infectious Diseases
  • Diagnose Muscle Disorders
  • Evaluate Bone Fractures
  • Locate Tumors and Other Masses
  • Evaluate The Health of Blood Vessels and Other Internal Structures
  • Assess Internal Injuries and Internal Bleeding
  • Diagnose Heart Disease

X-Rays

X-Rays produce black and white images of the internal structures of the body. For the most part X-rays are used to evaluate broken bones and other skeletal problems such as the damaged caused by arthritis.

However, doctors may request X-rays for a wide range of reasons, including diagnosing:

  • Infections Including Respiratory Infections
  • Broken Bones
  • Perforations in the Stomach or Intestine
  • Diagnose Kidney, Bladder, and Gallstones
  • Blocked Blood Vessels
  • Enlarged Heart
  • Locate Swallowed Items
  • Diagnose Hirschsprung Disease in Children (A condition causing a blockage of the large intestine).

How Can You Access Our Imaging Services

As an outpatient facility of Altus Baytown Hospital, we can assist any patient with their imaging needs, provided they have a referral from their doctor.

If your primary care physician requests you get a CT Scan, X-ray, or an Ultrasound, let them know you wish to have these done at our facility because of:

  • The facility for time given that we work 24/7 every day of the week, including weekends,
  • Central location,

Top Reasons Medicare Patients Visit the ER

Why Quality Senior ER Care is Vital

The babyboomer generation continues to age, and according to one study, every year, some 56,803 senior citizens find themselves visiting the Emergency Room for various conditions.  Today we will cover why quality senior ER care is vital and the top 10 reasons why Medicare patients visit the ER.

With more patients over the age of 65, hospital-based ER’s are having a hard time providing the care these patients require. This makes access to outpatient ER centers like Altus Baytown ER, which now accepts Medicare, patients a vital service for the community.

Top Reasons Why Medicare Patients Visit the ER

Senior citizens are more likely to suffer from chronic diseases, and this makes them vulnerable to suffer complications or injuries. Meaning, they will need immediate emergency medical attention. Unfortunately, because of the overcrowding crisis in hospital-based ER’s many patients, 65 and over, don’t receive timely care.

Here is a list of the top reasons why medicare patients will need to visit the ER.

Injuries and Accidents

Older adults can develop balance problems, and this makes them more likely to suffer falls, which could result in a broken bone, or concussion.

Additionally, eyesight problems and slower reflexes could make them more likely to be involved in car crashes and other accidents. All crash victims regardless of age should visit the ER to ensure there are no severe injuries, and senior patients are not the exception.

Patients 65 and older also have a higher risk of heat-induced exhaustion and dehydration, which are conditions that require immediate medical attention.

Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain can be a result of digestive problems, viruses or infection, food poisoning, and in some cases, kidney stones.

Adverse Drug Reactions and Accidental Overdose

Negative side effects of prescription drugs are a common reason for which older patients visit the ER. Self-medication and accidental overdoses are also reasons for which senior patients must go to the emergency room.

Heart Disease and Chest Pains

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US according to the CDC. Seniors who experience shortness of breath or chest pains need to come to Altus Baytown ER immediately as these could be signs of a heart attack.

Stroke

Another serious condition that sends senior patients to the ER. Strokes rarely cause pain, but they do cause confusion, slurred speech, and paralysis on one side.

chest pain Medicare Patients Visit the ER

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and severe asthma are all conditions that are known as COPD. Smoking is the leading cause of COPD; therefore, quitting your smoking habit can help reduce the risk of developing COPD. Check your Medicare coverage, as most Medicare Part B plans cover counseling sessions for people who want to quit smoking.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is perhaps the most common upper respiratory infection that lands seniors in the ER. Medicare Part B covers the annual pneumococcal vaccine, which could help prevent respiratory infections like pneumonia.

Spinal Disorders

Conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis, as well as injuries to the back or neck can cause severe pain. Back pain is a common symptom that prompts older patients to come to the ER.

Urinary Tract Infections

Many senior citizens are chronically dehydrated. Dehydration is one of the leading causes of urinary tract infections. To help prevent UTI’s, make sure you drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.

If you are a senior citizen with Medicare coverage, you now have access to quality emergency room care. Altus Baytown ER is now an outpatient facility for Altus Hospital, and therefore we are now able to accept Medicare patients.

You don’t have to wait in line anymore to get the medical attention you deserve, come to Altus Baytown ER, where top ER doctors and nurses are available 24/7 to attend your medical emergency.

Meet Dr. Keegan Massey, Altus Baytown ER Medical Director

Meet the New Altus Baytown ER Medical Director

Dr. Keegan Massey, MD

Our Baytown ER has undergone a lot of changes in the last few months, from our partnership with Altus Hospital to designating a new Medical Director.

Today we are pleased to introduce Dr. Keegan Massey, MD to the community of Baytown.

Even though Dr. Massey is a very busy man these days; he was gracious enough to spare a few minutes to talk to us.

Join us as we get to know Dr. Keegan Massey.

Who is Dr. Keegan Massey? A Personal Look

A native Texan, Dr. Massey, was born in Elkhart and raised in nearby Corpus Christi. From a very young age, he knew what his calling in life would be; he always wanted to be a physician.

He is a very outgoing, energetic person who when time and his patients permit loves to travel, workout at the gym, and surf.

His Academic and Professional Experience

A graduate of emergency medicine from the Ross University School of Medicine, Dr. Massey completed his residency at Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital.

He practiced emergency medicine for four years in Corpus Christi before deciding to move to Houston.

His vast experience working in emergency rooms prepared him for the significant responsibilities that rely on the medical director for one of our busiest ER centers.

Dr. Keegan Massey’s Approach to Treatment

His dedication to patients and excellent bedside manner has earned him the love and respect of both his patients and peers.

He takes the time to sit with each patient, answer their questions, and calm their fears as much as possible. In his own words, he does his best to treat everyone as if they were family.

When we asked him what about Altus Emergency Centers attracted him the most, he responded it was our company culture. Just like us, he believes that teamwork, minimal wait times, and compassionate medicine are essential factors to provide the Baytown community with the best possible emergency care.

We are excited to see all the wonderful things Dr. Massey will help us accomplish at our Baytown ER center.

We know that his personalized approach to treatment will inspire the rest of us always to strive to do and be better at what we do.

We are also happy to announce that our Baytown ER now accepts Medicare patients thanks to our recent partnership with Altus Hospital.

The Keys to Healthy Aging

The Keys to Healthy Aging

In honor of our recent acceptance of Medicare at Altus Baytown ER, this month of September, we celebrate Healthy Aging Month. There is no better time to re-invent yourself and start adopting better health practices.

Aging is something that affects all of us, not just the elderly. The better we take care of ourselves now, the more enjoyable our later years will be.

If you think you are too old to make some positive changes in your life, and improve your health, think again!

Simple changes in our daily routines can provide significant benefits, no matter what age you are.

Here are some simple tips to help you live and age healthier:

Watch What You Eat and Drink

We know that poor eating habits are affecting the health, safety, and overall well-being of Americans.

The US Department of Health and Human Services reports that:

  • About 90% of Americans consume approximately 3,400 mg/day of sodium, well above the federal guideline of 2,300 mg/day or less.
  • Most Americans don’t eat enough vegetables, fruits, whole-grains, dairy products, and healthy oils
  • The average American diet exceeds the recommended intake levels in these four categories:
      • Calories from solid fats and sugars
      • Refined grains
      • Sodium
      • Saturated Fat

If you wish to increase your energy levels and prevent illnesses, follow a diet that is:

  • Low in saturated fat
  • Includes lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Includes more oily fish
  • Has small amounts of low-fat dairy and lean meats

Also, remember to drink lots of water to stay hydrated and limit how much alcohol you drink.

Unhealthy eating can increase the risk of developing chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity.

If you suffer any complications from any of these illnesses, remember Altus Baytown ER is available to attend any emergency, with the added benefit of minimal wait times.

Stay Active

Staying active through the years has many health benefits, including:

  • Helps maintain healthy bones and muscles which help maintain balance and mobility
  • It can boost your self-esteem
  • Helps you sleep better
  • Increases energy levels
  • Lowers the risk of heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, and some types of cancer

The World Health Organization recommends adults 65 and older do 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week. You don’t need to join a gym to get your workout; you could add any of these activities to your weekly routine:

  • Walking
  • Dancing
  • Gardening
  • Swimming

If you are over 65 and want to add some physical activity to your day, remember:

  • Pace yourself, don’t try to do too much at once
  • Choose an exercise routine that fits your current level of fitness
  • Stay hydrated
  • When possible exercise with a buddy

As a Medicare provider, Altus Baytown ERis the best option for patients 65 and older to get treatment in case of a fall or any other type of injury.

Get Checked!

The best type of medicine is prevention. Everyone, regardless of age, should get at least an annual medical checkup.

For those of you who are 65 and older, you should talk to your doctor about getting these tests:

  • Blood Pressure Screening
  • Cholesterol Screening
  • Colorectal Screening
  • Eye Exam
  • Hearing Test
  • Dental Exam
  • Diabetes Screening
  • Osteoporosis Screening
  • Prostate Screening
  • Mammogram
  • Pap Smear
  • Vitamin D Test
  • Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone Screening

It’s never too late to start making positive changes in our life. We are blessed to live in an age where medical and technological advances can give us the chance to live longer.

Always Have a Plan.  Know Where to Go In the Event of An Emergency.

To ensure you get to live a long and fulfilling life, you need to take care of yourself. However, accidents do happen, and for that, you have us.

TRICARE ER Family Care – We Care for Our Military and Their Families

We Care for Our Military and Their Families

The very nature of the job of a military person means they will face daily challenges. However, no service member should ever have to worry about their healthcare needs or those of his family being met, especially during an emergency.  It shouldn’t be a challenge to find TRICARE ER Family Care.

A report by news agency Reuters explains how a study revealed how American families with military healthcare are more likely to experience difficulties with healthcare access.

If you are looking for TRICARE ER Family Care, you’ve found it!  Altus Emergency Centers has been a proud TRICARE provider for many years. We believe our brave men and women in uniform should receive the best emergency medical care possible. That is why all our locations accept TRICARE patients.

The following are some frequently asked questions to help shed light on TRICARE ER Family Care and coverage for veterans, active military, and their families.

Does Your TRICARE Healthcare Plan Cover Emergency Care?

Yes!

TRICARE emergency care coverage includes professional and institutional charges as well as services and supplies administered or prescribed in the emergency room.

TRICARE is very clear that in the event of a medical emergency, you should call 911 and visit an ER, not an urgent care clinic.

Moreover, emergency room care does not require prior authorization. However, TRICARE Prime plan members must contact their primary care provider within 24 hours or the next business day after receiving emergency care at one of our ER centers.

What Does TRICARE Consider an Emergency?

TRICARE covers three types of medical emergencies:

Medical Emergency

TRICARE defines a medical emergency as the sudden and unexpected onset of an illness or injury or the worsening of a chronic condition that:

  • Is life-threatening,
  • Could cause the loss or severe impairment of a limb or eyesight
  • Requires immediate medical attention
  • Manifests painful symptoms requiring medical care to alleviate suffering

These are some examples of medical emergencies covered by TRICARE:

  • Cardiac Arrest (No pulse)
  • Injuries with Severe Bleeding
  • Spinal Cord, Neck or Back injuries
  • Severe Chest Pain
  • Severe Eye Injuries
  • Broken Bone
  • Trouble Breathing

Maternity Emergency

A maternity emergency applies to any circumstance that results in a medical complication which puts the mother or baby at risk.

Mental Health Emergencies

TRICARE patients diagnosed with a mental disorder can visit our ER when they are thought to be a risk to themselves or others.

Emergency room care does not require prior authorization. However, if the patient is admitted to the hospital as a result of their psychiatric emergency, the incident must be reported to the regional contractor within 24 hours of admission and no more than 72 hours after admission.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

Are Pediatric Emergencies Covered?

TRICARE offers several healthcare plans some of which include benefits for family members including children.

  • TRICARE Prime: This is available to active duty and retired service members and their families
  • TRICARE Select: Active duty and retired service members and their families as well as active and non-active reserve, and retired reserve members and their families are eligible
  • TRICARE For Life: Available for beneficiaries who have Medicare Part A and B
  • TRICARE Reserve Select: Intended for members of the Selected Reserve and their families. Recipients must meet certain qualifications
  • TRICARE Retired Select: Available to qualified Retired Reserve members and their families
  • TRICARE Young Adult: This plan is for unmarried or adult children of an eligible sponsor. Beneficiaries must be at least 21 years of age and no older than 26

TRICARE members can trust their children’s emergency care to us. All our Emergency Centers have certified pediatric emergency physicians and nurses on staff 24/7 to attend pediatric emergencies. We also provide separate, dedicated pediatric examining rooms and equipment.

At Altus Emergency Centers, we strongly believe the members of our military deserve the best. We provide them the peace of mind of knowing their loved ones are safe and cared for with compassion by professionals who care.

Top Time-Sensitive Medical Emergencies

When Minutes Matter Don’t Risk Your Life!

Top Time-Sensitive Medical Emergencies

Accidents and sudden illnesses come without warning, and nobody ever expects to be in a situation where someone’s life is at stake.

We are vulnerable and could face a life-threatening medical condition at any moment. When this happens, it’s essential to know when a medical emergency is time-sensitive.

In this article, we will talk about some of the top time-sensitive medical emergencies. Because getting someone the medical attention they need, right away, can help save their life.

What is a Time-Sensitive Medical Emergency?

A time-sensitive emergency is a medical condition where fast treatment can make a big difference in the eventual outcome for a person.

Conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, and severe trauma are considered time-sensitive medical emergencies.

In these circumstances, the faster a patient receives medical attention, the better his chances of surviving are. Additionally, receiving fast treatment can also lower the risk of permanent disability.

List of Top Time-Sensitive Medical Emergencies

The following is a list of some of the most common time-sensitive medical emergencies.

Cardiac and Circulatory Medical Emergencies

  • Cardiac Arrest: This is when your heart suddenly stops. If not treated immediately the patient will die.
  • Heart Attack:  This occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart stops. It needs immediate medical attention. Otherwise, that section of the heart muscle starts to die.  The earlier the intervention, the less damage to the muscle, the greater chance the patient has to survive.

“Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a heart attack.” – Heart.org

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis: A blood clot that forms within a deep vein, usually in the leg. If it breaks loose, it can travel through the bloodstream into the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism.  Symptoms include:

Swelling, Pain or tenderness not caused by injury, Skin that is warm to the touch, Redness or discoloration of the skin.”

Source: StoptheClot.org

  • Heart Arrhythmia: An abnormal heartbeat. Symptoms include palpitations or feeling a pause in between pulses.  Seek immediate ER if accompanied by chest pain or pressure, you may be having a heart attack.

If accompanied by face drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech, sudden severe headache, trouble seeing or walking, confusion, and/or sudden numbness, you could be having a stroke.

Neurological Medical Emergencies

  • Stroke: Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the United States. However, some medications can reserve a stroke when given within the first three hours of the onset of symptoms.
  • Spinal Cord Injury: Acute spinal cord compression is a medical emergency that requires swift diagnosis and treatment. If not treated promptly, it can cause irreversible spinal cord injury and long-term disability.
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome: A rare disorder in which your body’s immune system attacks your nerves. The condition can eventually paralyze the whole body. According to the CDC:

“About two-thirds of people who develop GBS experience symptoms several days or weeks after they have been sick with diarrhea or a respiratory illness.”

Trauma-Related Medical Emergencies

  • Traumatic Brain Injury: Serious traumatic brain injury requires immediate medical attention as they can result in long-term complications or death. Find out more about TBI.
  • Chest Injury: This includes any form of physical damage to the chest, including the ribs, heart, and lungs. Chest injuries account for a quarter of all deaths from traumatic injury. To increase survival rates, patients need immediate medical attention.
  • Profuse Bleeding: Wounds that results in uncontrolled bleeding can lead to a condition known as shock. Shock is a life-threatening medical emergency where the patient no longer has enough blood circulating in their body.  Read about Cuts and Scrapes.

Sharp pain in the lower right abdomen, appetite-loss, nausea and/or vomiting soon after abdominal pain begins, abdominal swelling, fever of 99-102 °F.

  • Intestinal Obstruction: A blockage that prevents food or liquid from passing through either the small intestine or large intestine (colon).

Without swift medical intervention, the blocked parts of the intestine can die, and lead to severe problems.

Environmental Medical Emergencies

  • Heat-Related Illnesses: Heatstroke, severe dehydration, and heat exhaustion are all potentially life-threatening conditions if not treated rapidly.
  • Electrical Injuries: Electric currents from lightening, household appliances, or power lines can travel through the body burning both internal and external tissues. Electrical shock can also damage internal organs and cause your heart to stop.

  • Bacterial Meningitis: The most dangerous type of meningitis, if not treated quickly it can lead to death or permanent disability.
  • Gas Gangrene: Gas gangrene, is a fast-spreading and potentially life-threatening form of gangrene caused by a bacterial infection.
  • Necrotizing Fasciitis: Commonly known as a flesh-eating disease this rare bacterial infection can spread quickly in the body and can cause death.
  • Sepsis: A potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body’s response to an infection. If left untreated, sepsis it will progress into septic shock and may lead to death.  Signs may include:

High heart rate, shivering, fever, confusion and disorientation, shortness of breath, extreme pain or discomfort, sweating or clamming skin.  Source:  CDC.gov.

What to Do in A Time-Sensitive Medical Emergency

Knowing what to do during a time-sensitive medical emergency can save your life or that of a loved one.

What it Means for the Community

On Sunday, September 1st, 2019, the Altus Emergency Center in Baytown will be known as the Altus Baytown ER.

The alliance means that any resident, including Medicare patients, can now choose to receive more personalized and convenient emergency treatment.

Servicing the Senior Community.

Ten percent of the estimated 75,418 residents of Baytown is believed to be over 65 years of age.

The CDC has estimated that 15.6% of all emergency room visits are from patients 65 and older.

Most of these patients are on fixed incomes and depend on their Medicare coverage to receive treatment.

That meant that, up until now, the senior community of Baytown could not use their Medicare coverage to benefit from the quality and convenience of care offered by Altus Baytown ER.

However, with the recent Altus Baytown ER announcement, any Medicare patient can now choose to receive emergency treatment at a more convenient location, with NO WAIT TIMES, and personalized attention by board-certified in-house emergency physicians.

Medicare is Coming Soon! So What About the Coverage?

Patients who have Medicare Part A and Part B coverage, which covers emergency room visit costs will still be responsible for some out of pocket expenses, including:

  • A copayment for visiting the ER
  • A copayment for each hospital service they receive while in the ER
  • A coinsurance amount of 20% for the Medicare-approved cost for doctor services. Part B deductible applies.

Management at Altus Baytown ER stressed the importance of patients understanding their Medicare emergency room coverage. They also advise senior patients to acquire a Medicare Supplement plan to help cover some of the out-of-pocket expenses mentioned above.

Once the alliance takes place, Altus Baytown ER will be able to provide service of any resident of Baytown, Liberty, Dayton, and Crosby, and other surrounding areas regardless of age.

The Altus Baytown ER is certified to handle the full spectrum of services offered by hospital emergency room departments.

Physicians are present 24/7, including holidays, and patients don’t need to schedule appointments or call beforehand.

Altus Baytown ER can triage and stabilize critical patients before referring them to the main hospital.
