Common Reasons Men Visit the ER

Common Reasons Men Visit the ER

June is Men’s Health Month, a full month dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of keeping the men in our lives healthy. For this reason, we’ve decided to list the top Common Reasons Men Visit the ER and offer ways to improve the overall health of men in our communities.

These are the top reasons men visit our ER’s

Chest Pains

Every year we treat many patients who come to us complaining of chest pains. Although this type of pain is usually associated with cardiac arrest or heart attack, it can also indicate the presence of other health problems.

Chest pains are of particular concern for anyone who has other chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, or heart disease.

Chest pains that are also accompanied by pressure-like or “burning sensation, nausea, sweating, or shortness of breath needs immediate medical attention.

Abdominal Pain

Altus Emergency Centers is synonymous of excellence among providers of emergency medical care in all the communities they serve.

Their decision to become CIHQ accredited is proof of their continued promise of providing the best care to the residents of Waxahachie and Lake Jackson.

Having accreditation status helps ensure that patients receive excellent emergency care that far exceeds minimum standards for safe, quality healthcare. This way, patients can rest easy knowing they are in the best hands.

Sprains and Broken Bones

Both injuries can happen to anyone regardless of their age or physical condition. Sprains and broken bones are often the results of accidents or twisting of joints while playing sports or doing other physical activities.

Mild sprains don’t require medical attention. By just letting the joint rest for a few days, the injury will usually pass. However, if the injury causes severe pain or it makes moving the joint difficult, you need emergency medical attention.

Likewise, if you suspect you’ve fractured a bone, come to the ER to get evaluated.

Upper Respiratory Infections

Most upper respiratory infections are the result of viral infections, although in some cases, bacteria can also cause infections.

Most of the visits at the ER are due to complications from the common cold and flu viruses, which, if left unattended, could lead to more severe conditions.

Cuts and Contusions

Cuts and contusions are common reasons to visit our ER’s. Most cuts are the result of accidents while handling knives, power tools, and other machinery.

Deep cuts that require stitches or those with severe bleeding need immediate medical attention.

Contusions or bruises are typically the results of trauma. Trauma to the head, neck, or back requires medical attention. Severe injury to other parts of the body should also be evaluated by a medical professional.

Back Pain

Back pain-related ER visits are more common than you might think. Accidents, sport-related injuries, lifting heavy items, and repetitive motion at work are the most common causes of back pain.

5 Ways To Improve Men’s Health

Most men already know that eating well, not smoking, drinking less alcohol, and staying physically active is essential for staying healthy.

Here we offer a few additional tips to help improve the health of the men in the communities we serve.

Protect Yourself

We know you love to stay active and do handy work around the house but protecting yourself while you do what you love needs to be a priority.

Make sure you use the right protective gear like helmets, safety goggles, and gloves when doing handy work. Also, don’t forget to apply sunscreen and insect repellant when outdoors.

Manage Stress

Take time every day or at least a couple of days a week to do something you enjoy; you deserve it!

Do your best to keep a positive attitude. This doesn’t mean masking your emotions for the sake of others; it’s about embracing the small blessings we each get every day and see how these simple things help make our lives better.

Get plenty of sleep; experts recommend you get between 7-9 hours of sleep per night.

Get Regular Check-Ups and Screenings

Regular check-ups and health screenings to address the unique healthcare needs of men can go a long way in protecting your health. Speak to your family doctor about your risk factors for certain diseases and formulate a plan to lower the risk or improve the management of your condition.

The most common diseases affect both men and women, however, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, women on average live five years more than men. While this is not great news for the guys, the male life expectancy gap improved from 1979 when women on average lived 7.8 years longer than men; however, male life expectancy has decreased in the last two years.

Men are now living longer in part because of the efforts to raise awareness about healthcare. Most men don’t like to talk about or acknowledge their health problems, this is mostly due to social stigma; sadly men have been made to feel ashamed for being ill, and it is because of this that most men don’t get regular checkups.

It is essential for both men and women to get regular checkups, as these aid in early detection of the leading causes of death in America, such as:

  • Heart Disease
  • Cancer
  • Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases
  • Cerebrovascular Diseases (Stroke)
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney Disease
  • Influenza and Pneumonia
  • Chronic Liver Disease and Cirrhosis
  • Hypertension

Men’s Health has come a long way in the last 40 years, we have increased male life expectancy, and improved diagnostic tests, and treatments, but we can do more.

For this reason, the staff of Altus Emergency Centers wants to help dads live longer, healthier lives. We are already committed to saving the lives of those who visit our centers, but, as always prevention is the best medicine, so follow our helpful tips to improve your health and that of the extraordinary men in your life.

Protect Your Heart

Heart Disease is the number one reason men die in this country, luckily, there are simple ways to strengthen and improve your heart’s function, the most important one is diet.

Improving the way we eat, will help keep our hearts healthy, and you don’t need to give up all your favorite foods, but you should reduce the amount of saturated fat you consume, lower your sodium intake, and add more vegetables, and fruits to your diet. When serving, remember fruits and vegetables should be half of the plate.

You Got to Move it Move it

Most guys think exercise should be intense workouts with heavy weights. We won’t discourage this type of training, but, it is not necessary to be healthier. Just 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise a day is enough to help you live longer and improve your quality of life as you age.

Be Proactive

Think about how you take care of your car, you know preventive maintenance is essential, that is why you regularly change the oil, you change the brake pads, and rotate the tires, right? So why won’t you do the same for you? Don’t wait until you are feeling sick to visit your doctor, be proactive and take care of yourself; regular medical checkups can catch small problems before they become big ones.

Talk it Out

Life can be overwhelming sometimes, and just because you are a guy doesn’t mean you have to be tough and brave all the time. Emotional stress hurts our health and can take years off our lives; therefore, it’s not only ok to seek help, but it is also needed. So, talk to your partner, talk to a friend, or find a therapist who can help you deal with emotional issues.
