Stay Safe Wherever You Are

Tips to Stay Safe Wherever You Are

Staying safe no matter where you are doesn’t happen on its own. It takes conscious effort and planning to ensure you and your family are protected no matter where you are.

We’ve put together a list of the most common hazards and how to avoid them to help keep you and your family safe.

Staying Safe at Home

Your home is supposed to be your safe place, somewhere you can relax and enjoy your family. But, ensuring it remains the haven, you always dreamed of takes a lot of behind-the-scenes work and planning.

These are the top causes of household injuries

  • Poisoning, including accidental drug overdose
  • Falls
  • Drowning
  • Burns

Here are some easy ways for you to help prevent accidents around your home:

Preventing Poisonings

  • Keep all cleaning products out of reach of small children and pets. If possible, keep these items in a locked cabinet
  • Never put cleaning solutions or other chemicals in unlabeled containers. Always keep them in their original packaging or a clearly labeled container
  • Keep all medicines out of children’s reach
  • Ensure an adult is present whenever a child, elderly or disabled person takes their medication to ensure proper dosing
  • Check the plants in your garden and make sure none of them are poisonous

Preventing Falls

Falls are the second leading cause of preventable fatal accidents and remain the leading cause of non-fatal injuries in the U.S.

  • Use barrier gates on stairs to prevent small children from falling
  • If you have toddlers at home, avoid using bunk beds
  • Rearrange furniture to ensure you have proper walkways around your home
  • Remove clutter from hallways and entryways
  • Invest in non-slip mats and rugs to prevent accidental slips
  • Install grip rails and non-slip mats in the bathroom
  • Tuck electrical cords away from any walkway in your home
  • Make sure walkways in and around your home have proper lighting

Preventing Drownings

Accidental drownings are a leading cause of death in children ages 1-4.

  • Stay with your children when they are in or near water, including bathtubs and pools
  • Install a fence around your pool and keep it locked
  • Remove all toys from the pool area to prevent children from trying to reach them and accidentally falling into the water

Preventing Burns

  • Keep hot items such as pots and pans in the kitchen, hair curlers, and irons well back from the edge of the stovetop, bathroom counter, tables, and ironing boards
  • Turn pan handles away from the edge of the stove
  • If you have small children around the home, it’s better to use placemats instead of tablecloths
  • If possible, try to have short or curly electrical cords that won’t dangle from the side of the furniture
  • Install a hot water tempering valve to prevent accidental burns in the bathroom and kitchen
  • Keep children away from open fires and grills

Staying Safe at Work

A safe work environment requires clear guidelines and practices and a team effort to communicate, adhere to, and continuously improve safety standards within the workplace.

The top reasons for work-related injuries involve:

  • Exposure to harmful substances or environments
  • Overexertion and bodily reactions
  • Slips, trips, and falls

Preventing Work-Related Injuries

As per the National Safety Council (NSC), harmful substances and environments in the workplace include electricity, noise, radiation, temperature extremes, air and water pressure changes, oxygen deficiency, contagious and infectious diseases, and stressful or traumatic events.

Safety tips:

  • Immediately report unsafe conditions
  • Keep your work area clean and clutter-free
  • Always wear protective gear when required
  • Be aware of your surroundings, look for spills, electrical cords, and other items that can cause a fall
  • Follow all safety protocols when using machinery, and only use them for their intended purpose
  • Stay hydrated
  • Practice good posture when lifting or sitting for extended periods
  • Take regular breaks
  • Never take procedural shortcuts as this can compromise your safety and that of others

Staying Safe While at Play

Playgrounds and sports fields are ideal for children to make friends, develop social and physical skills, and get some much-needed outdoor time. However, they can also be familiar places where kids get injured.

Most Common Injuries During Play

  • Broken bones (fractures)
  • Sprains and strains
  • Concussions
  • Internal organ injuries

Safety Tips

  • Always have an adult supervising children’s play
  • Ensure your kids only use age-appropriate playground equipment or practice a sport that is suitable for their age and physical condition
  • Teach your children the proper use of all protective gear
  • Make sure their shoelaces are tied and their footwear fits properly
  • Survey the playground for potential hazards, including broken glass, sharp-edged objects, rusty or broken playground equipment, tree stumps, or protruding rocks
  • Teach your children to play nice and never to push, shove, or hit their playmates
  • When possible, pick a playground with shock-absorbing surfaces such as sand, mulch, and synthetic turf

National Playground Safety Week

National Playground Safety Week

When you are a kid, playgrounds are the closest thing to heaven. They provide a space to make friends, get some exercise and spread our imaginations.

However, playgrounds can also pose a risk for young ones, which is why National Playground Safety Week exists. While we may never prevent all playground accidents, knowing how to improve their safety can help safeguard many children.

Playground Accident Facts

Every year emergency rooms treat more than 200,000 children under the age of 14 for playground-related injuries.

Most of the injuries treated in the ER (56%) are fractures, contusions, and abrasions. However, around 20,000 children brought to the ER suffered a traumatic brain injury, including a concussion.

Traumatic brain injuries are a genuine concern, especially when considering that the overall rate of playground-related TBIs shows a significant increase in recent years.

Risk Factors

Playground-related accidents can happen to any child regardless of age or gender. However, statistically, some kids are at a higher risk of sustaining an injury while playing in a playground.

  • 55% of ER treated injuries were boys, while 45% were girls
  • The age group most likely to suffer an injury that requires emergency attention is children between the ages of 5 and 9

Playground Safety Tips

Playgrounds can’t become safer by themselves. They need the cooperation of everyone involved in their maintenance and usage to ensure fewer kids get hurt while playing.

You can help protect your child by:

  • Supervising Children While They Play: You should never leave small children to play unsupervised at a playground. Even older children need supervision, especially when using climbing equipment.
  • Learn How to Use Playground Equipment Correctly: Make sure you read all the instructions and safety precautions posted at the playground before using any equipment. Not all attractions are suited for your child’s age, height, or weight.
  • Examine the Equipment Before Your Children Use It: Not all playgrounds receive the maintenance they require, and this can lead to faulty, rusty, or broken equipment, which can lead to serious injury.
  • Make Sure Your Kids have the Proper Clothing: Before you let your kids go down the slide or run around on the park grounds, check for things like drawstrings that can get caught on the rides and untied shoes. Also, make sure to remove any neckless, purses, or backpacks.
  • Mind the Weather: During the hot summer days, always make sure to test the temperature on slides, monkey bars, and other playground equipment to prevent burns. Additionally, don’t let kids play if the grounds are too wet or muddy, as they can easily fall and hurt themselves.
  • Keeping a Proper Distance: Teach your children never to walk in front or back of swings or stand in front of slides to prevent being knocked down.
  • Hygiene: To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, ask children to wash their hands before and after touching any equipment. It’s also important to try and maintain physical distance from other children.

When Does a Playground Injury Need Emergency Attention?

Not all playground injuries warrant a trip to the ER. However, you should rush to the nearest Altus Emergency Center if your child presents any of the following symptoms:

  • They hit their head and lost consciousness
  • If after a fall they feel nauseous, start vomiting, or have a headache
  • If their behavior seems out of place, including being unusually irritable or lethargic
  • If you notice swelling or deformity at the injured site
  • If you suspect they broke a bone
  • They have a deep cut that may require stitches
  • If a rusty object caused their injury

All Altus Emergency Centers have specialized pediatric examining rooms designed to calm and reassure children and their parents. Our examining rooms also have size-appropriate equipment for your child’s comfort.
