Physical Activity is Important – Fitness and Sports Month

Let’s Get Moving! Why Physical Activity is Important

Exercise has become almost a curse word in our culture. We dread going to the gym, and life always seems to get in the way. Between work, taking care of our family, who has time for the gym?

We have been led to believe that exercise is just something to do so we can lose weight and look good. However, physical activity has many benefits for our physical and mental health and can help us live longer and better lives.

Benefits of Exercise

These are just a few of the ways regular exercise can improve our daily lives:

1. It Will Help You Lose Those Extra Pounds

Any physical activity will burn calories, so getting at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity exercise will help boost our metabolism and help us burn more calories, which in turn will help slim our waistlines and look fabulous.

For those of you who are already at your ideal weight, exercise can help you maintain it.

2. It Can Make You Feel Happier

Exercise not only changes your body it also has a positive impact on your brain by causing changes in the part of the brain that regulates stress and anxiety.

Exercising increases our brain’s sensitivity to hormones like serotonin and norepinephrine, which relieve feelings of depression; and stimulated the production of endorphins which reduce the perception of pain.

Know Where to Go in Case of an Emergency.

3. It’s Good for Your Muscles and Bones

As we age, we lose muscle mass and function which can lead to injuries and disabilities. Physical activity and a healthy diet will help you grow and maintain healthy muscle mass.

Exercise especially high-impact activities like running or walking, help build bone density and reduces our risk of developing osteoporosis later in life.

4. Increases Your Energy Levels

You may think that adding exercise to your long list of things to do, will only serve to make you even more tired than you are, but this would be wrong.

Physical activity is, in fact, a fantastic energy booster for anyone, even people who suffer severe chronic illnesses and persistent fatigue.

5. Reduces Your Risk of Chronic Disease

According to the National Institutes of Health, the lack of physical activity is the primary cause of most chronic diseases.

Regular exercise helps prevent or manage a wide range of health problems and concerns, including:

  • Stroke
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Many Types of Cancer
  • Arthritis

Regular exercise can also help improve cognitive function and helps lower the risk of death from all causes.

6. Get A Better Night’s Rest

Exercising can help you fall asleep faster and get better sleep. Just don’t exercise too close to bedtime, or you may be too energized to go to sleep.

7. Helps Put the Spark Back into Your Sex Life

When we exercise, we feel and look better, which can help emotionally boost our sex life.

Additionally, regular physical activity may enhance sexual arousal in women and reduce erectile dysfunction in men.

Take it Slow, Do it Right and Avoid Injuries

Exercise is meant to improve our lives not to make them more difficult.

Regardless of what your fitness level is, everyone is vulnerable to a sports injury. Common exercise-related injuries include:

  • Sprains
  • Muscle Strains
  • Tendinitis—inflammation of a tendon, often due to overuse
  • ACL and Meniscus Tears of the Knee—a rip in one of the ligaments that helps stabilize the knee or cartilage that cushions the knee joint
  • Rotator Cuff Tears—rips in the group of muscles and their tendons that hold the arm in the shoulder socket.

Tips to Avoid Exercise-Related Injuries

  • Talk to your doctor before you start an exercise program, this is especially important for women over age 55, men over the age of 45 and anyone with a chronic illness
  • Choose the right workout for your age and fitness goals
  • Stretch, warm up, and cool down before and after your exercise program
  • Cross train, vary your workout routine to avoid overstressing one set of muscles
  • Learn the proper technique and mind your posture
  • Never push yourself to the point of pain
  • Wear the right gear
  • Start gradually, don’t try to do too much all at once
  • Stay hydrated

National Playground Safety Week

National Playground Safety Week

When you are a kid, playgrounds are the closest thing to heaven. They provide a space to make friends, get some exercise and spread our imaginations.

However, playgrounds can also pose a risk for young ones, which is why National Playground Safety Week exists. While we may never prevent all playground accidents, knowing how to improve their safety can help safeguard many children.

Playground Accident Facts

Every year emergency rooms treat more than 200,000 children under the age of 14 for playground-related injuries.

Most of the injuries treated in the ER (56%) are fractures, contusions, and abrasions. However, around 20,000 children brought to the ER suffered a traumatic brain injury, including a concussion.

Traumatic brain injuries are a genuine concern, especially when considering that the overall rate of playground-related TBIs shows a significant increase in recent years.

Risk Factors

Playground-related accidents can happen to any child regardless of age or gender. However, statistically, some kids are at a higher risk of sustaining an injury while playing in a playground.

  • 55% of ER treated injuries were boys, while 45% were girls
  • The age group most likely to suffer an injury that requires emergency attention is children between the ages of 5 and 9

Playground Safety Tips

Playgrounds can’t become safer by themselves. They need the cooperation of everyone involved in their maintenance and usage to ensure fewer kids get hurt while playing.

You can help protect your child by:

  • Supervising Children While They Play: You should never leave small children to play unsupervised at a playground. Even older children need supervision, especially when using climbing equipment.
  • Learn How to Use Playground Equipment Correctly: Make sure you read all the instructions and safety precautions posted at the playground before using any equipment. Not all attractions are suited for your child’s age, height, or weight.
  • Examine the Equipment Before Your Children Use It: Not all playgrounds receive the maintenance they require, and this can lead to faulty, rusty, or broken equipment, which can lead to serious injury.
  • Make Sure Your Kids have the Proper Clothing: Before you let your kids go down the slide or run around on the park grounds, check for things like drawstrings that can get caught on the rides and untied shoes. Also, make sure to remove any neckless, purses, or backpacks.
  • Mind the Weather: During the hot summer days, always make sure to test the temperature on slides, monkey bars, and other playground equipment to prevent burns. Additionally, don’t let kids play if the grounds are too wet or muddy, as they can easily fall and hurt themselves.
  • Keeping a Proper Distance: Teach your children never to walk in front or back of swings or stand in front of slides to prevent being knocked down.
  • Hygiene: To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, ask children to wash their hands before and after touching any equipment. It’s also important to try and maintain physical distance from other children.

When Does a Playground Injury Need Emergency Attention?

Not all playground injuries warrant a trip to the ER. However, you should rush to the nearest Altus Emergency Center if your child presents any of the following symptoms:

  • They hit their head and lost consciousness
  • If after a fall they feel nauseous, start vomiting, or have a headache
  • If their behavior seems out of place, including being unusually irritable or lethargic
  • If you notice swelling or deformity at the injured site
  • If you suspect they broke a bone
  • They have a deep cut that may require stitches
  • If a rusty object caused their injury

All Altus Emergency Centers have specialized pediatric examining rooms designed to calm and reassure children and their parents. Our examining rooms also have size-appropriate equipment for your child’s comfort.

Youth Sports Safety Month

National Youth Sports Safety Month

April is National Youth Sports Safety Month, an observance dedicated to raising awareness of sports injuries in our nation’s youth.

This month, Altus Emergency Centers joins multiple organizations across the country that lead the charge in spreading the message of injury prevention in young athletes.

Youth Sports Injuries by the Numbers

According to a report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 2010 to 2016:

  • An estimated 2.7 million emergency room visits in the U.S. were patients between the ages of 5 and 24 who had suffered a sport or recreational activity-related injury
  • 66.5% of those sports injuries were from patients aged 10-19
  • The analysis revealed that the top two sports responsible for sports-related ER visits were football and basketball
  • The study also found that gymnastics or cheerleading accounted for an estimated 147,000 annual ER visits
  • 89,000 yearly ER visits were the result of skateboarding injuries
  • Cycling incidents were among the top five activities that resulted in ER visits for sports-related injuries, with most patients being 10-14 years of age

These findings are similar to older analysis, suggesting that youth Emergency Room visits due to sports injuries have stayed relatively stable in recent years.

Top Sport-Related Injury Diagnoses

The most common diagnoses associated with sports-related injuries are sprains, strains, and dislocations.

Broken bones, contusions, and superficial wounds are also quite common.

More worrying are traumatic brain injuries such as concussions that, sustained repeatedly or left untreated, could have long-term consequences.

Sports-Related Injury Prevention

The statistics above are scary for anyone who has a child. The good news is that many of these injuries are preventable.

  • Schedule a health checkup before your kids start participating in an organized team. Knowing your child is healthy enough to play the sport will give you peace of mind and can help lower your child’s risk of serious injury.
  • Make sure to keep young athletes well hydrated.
  • Warming up before engaging in a vigorous physical activity is a healthy habit all children should learn as soon as possible. Stretching and warm-up exercises can help prevent sprains and strains.
  • Know and teach your kids the signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Symptoms include dizziness, headaches, nausea and vomiting, muscle cramps, not sweating, shortness of breath, and confusion. If your child notices any of these symptoms in themselves or another, instruct them to call 911.
  • Insist they wear appropriate protective gear, including helmets, elbow pads, knee pads, and shin guards.
  • Don’t let your child play if they feel unwell or have an injury they have not recovered from.
  • Encourage your kids to try different sports to avoid straining specific muscle groups or joints.
  • Always listen to kids when they report an injury or experience aches and pains and seek medical attention.

Since children are still growing, even minor injuries left unchecked can lead to more significant problems in the years to come.

When to Come to Altus ER

Bring your child to the ER if they Injured a limb and are having trouble moving it or putting any weight on it, or you suspect they may have fractured a bone.

Rush to the nearest Altus Emergency Center if you notice any of these signs:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Trouble breathing
  • Bleeding that won’t stop
  • Vomiting more than once
  • Changes in behavior, memory loss, confusion, dizziness
  • Neck pain
  • Abdominal pain
