This Memorial Day, we encourage you to join us in paying tribute to our fallen heroes. Traditionally this special celebration is reserved for those courageous men and women in uniform who died protecting our freedom and way of life.

To all our heroes and their families, we are eternally grateful.

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, and everyone is eager to go out and have as much fun as possible. However, small oversights can turn into agonizing moments, at Altus ER Centers we are committed to help our communities stay safe, and therefore we have prepared a small list of Memorial Day Safety Tips to help you and your family enjoy this weekend.

Memorial Day Safety Tip #1

Food Safety

 

The weather around this time of year is perfect for a picnic or outdoor grilling. To avoid the risk of food poisoning, we recommend:

  • That perishable foods be refrigerated within 2 hours of purchase, if the temperature outside is 90°F or higher, food should be chilled within 1 hour.
  • While grilling or out on a picnic keep uncooked foods in a cooler.
  • To avoid cross contamination, keep meats separate from other perishables.
  • Cover food to avoid insects from depositing germs.

Water Safety

 

National Safe Boating Week coincides with Memorial Day Weekend as a lot of people are expected to hit the waterways.  Even if you do not plan to be on a boat, there are some standard Memorial Day Safety Tips to keep in mind, in order to avoid a tragic accident:

  • Wear a US Coast Guard approved life jacket that fits properly whenever you are on a boat.
  • Avoid alcohol when swimming, boating or tubing.
  • Designate an adult watcher/lifeguard to keep an eye on children in pools, at the beach, rivers or even hot tubs.
  • Never swim alone and try to stay within eyesight of a lifeguard station.
  • Do not go swimming, tubing or boating after sunset.

Grill/Fire Safety

 

Emergency care centers see their share of burn victims because of unsafe grilling or bonfire practices. If your weekend plans include grilling or sitting near an open fire, please keep these Memorial Day Safety Tips in mind:

  • Never leave a grill or fire unattended, be mindful of the wind and extinguish all fires completely.
  • Do not grill indoors, keep grills, bonfires and fire pits away from low hanging branches and materials that can easily catch fire.
  • Make sure your grill is properly cleaned before using it, clogged gas burners, and leftover grease can cause a fire to spiral out of control within seconds.
  • When grilling, use the long handle utensils made especially for barbequing and keep an extinguisher nearby.
  • Never add starter fuel to already ignited charcoal & ALWAYS keep children and pets away from the grill and fire pit.

Safe Sun Exposure

 

Here in Texas, it tends to get really hot. An important Memorial Day Safety Tip is to protect yourself and your family members from extended sun exposure to avoid sunburns or a heat stroke.

  • Wear SFP 15 or higher sunscreen, apply it 30 minutes before exposure and reapply every 2 hours.
  • Use sunglasses and a hat to protect your eyes and always drink plenty of water while celebrating outdoors.
  • If you or a family member feels faint or nauseous, move them to a cool place immediately, if necessary apply cold compresses to the back of their neck and forehead to help lower their body temperature.
  • If you have children, schedule their outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon, do not leave them unsupervised on a hot day.

Travel Safely

 

This is one the busiest and dangerous travel weekends of the year, follow these Memorial Day Safety Tips to ensure your family’s safety:

  • Always wear seat belts and make sure child car seats are properly installed.
  • Have your car serviced before a long trip.
  • Plan your trip beforehand and give yourself extra travel time.
  • Never drink and drive or allow yourself or anyone else to get into a car with someone who has been drinking.

Top Three Common Summertime Injuries

We’ve asked our doctors to list the most common reasons why people end up in our Emergency Centers during the summer months and what can be done to prevent them. Here is what we learned.

 

Heat-Related Illnesses

A 2015 study from researchers at Brown University found that heat-related injuries significantly increased once the thermometer hit 75°F.

According to a study from the CDC, some 2000 Americans die every year from weather-related causes. Of these, 31% are due to excessive natural heat exposure.

Emergency Room visits for heat-related illnesses range from mild to severe and include the following:

 

1. Heat-Stroke

The most severe heat-related illness occurs when the body temperature rises rapidly, and the sweating mechanisms fail preventing the body from cooling down.

 

Should You Go to the ER?

Heat-stroke can cause death or permanent disability if the patient is not rushed to the ER immediately.

2. Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion is the body’s response to extreme loss of water and salt, usually due to excessive sweating.

 

Should You Go to the ER?

You should come to the nearest Altus Emergency Center for evaluation and treatment if you suspect you or someone you know is suffering from heat exhaustion.

3. Rhabdomyolysis

This medical condition is associated with heat stress and prolonged physical exertion, which causes the rapid breakdown, rupture, and death of muscle.

Rhabdomyolysis can cause irregular heart rhythms, seizures, and damage the kidneys.

Yes, anyone suffering from rhabdomyolysis needs immediate emergency medical care.

 

How to Avoid Heat-Related Illnesses

 

  • Be mindful of the temperature outdoors
  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid being in the sun for long periods
  • Avoid being outdoors between 2-4pm the hottest hours of the day

Swimming-Related Injuries and Drowning

Our doctors see a fair amount of swimming-related injuries during the summer.

The injuries are mostly caused by:

  • Diving into a body of water
  • Boating accidents
  • Drownings

 

How to avoid Swimming-related injuries and Drowning

 

  • Supervise children when they are in or around a pool, lake, river or ocean
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Wear a lifejacket
  • Always jump into a body of water feet first
  • Look for underwater hazards before going into the water
  • Stay in designated areas
  • When possible, choose to swim in areas where lifeguards are present

 

Should You Go to the ER?

 

All drowning victims need immediate emergency medical attention.

Any swimming injuries which result in deep lacerations need to be evaluated by a medical professional.

Victims who have lost consciousness due to a swimming-related incident need to be taken to the nearest emergency room for evaluation.

Sports Injuries

During the summer months, people usually practice more outdoor activities from playing frisbee, to taking up a sport such as football, baseball, or soccer.

Because of this increase in activity, our ER doctors see a lot more sports injuries during this time of year.

ER visits from sports injuries vary in type and severity, some are just mild sprains which will heal with rest, others involve torn ACL’s or even a broken bone.

 

How to Avoid Sports Injuries

 

  • Warm up and cool down before and after any physical activity
  • Be mindful of your physical condition, listen to your body and don’t overdo it
  • Wear protective gear
  • Learn the right techniques to play any sport
  • Rest when tired
  • Stay hydrated

  • Concussion

Summer is almost here, and with it come long, hot, sunny days perfect for swimming in pools, lakes, and rivers.

The truth is that swimming is a great activity. Not only is it fun; it also provides a bunch of physical and mental benefits. However, drowning is a real danger, even for expert swimmers.

Perhaps that is why the month of May has been designated as Water Safety Month. This month we aim to raise awareness of the dangers of accidental drownings and how to prevent them.

How Big is The Problem?

What are the risks of not following proper water safety? Statistics according to the CDC:

  • Ten people die every day from unintentional drowning
  • An additional 332 people die each year from drowning in boating-related incidents
  • Drowning is the fifth leading cause of accidental injury death in the United States
  • 1 in 5 drowning deaths is a child under the age of 14
  • For every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency room care for nonfatal submersion injuries

Where Do Drownings Occur?

According to information published in Enddrowningnow.org, most drownings occur in:

  • Pools 21.3%
  • Lakes 25.9%
  • Rivers 27.2%
  • Oceans 10.4%

What Can You Do to Prevent Drownings?

Although not all drownings result in death, nonfatal drowning injuries can cause severe brain damage that may result in long-term disabilities such as:

  • Memory problems
  • Learning disabilities
  • Permanent loss of basic functioning (permanent vegetative state)

So, learning how you can prevent accidental drowning injuries is essential. 

Water Safety Tips

Learn to Swim

Although strong swimmers can also suffer drowning injuries knowing how to swim can reduce the risk of drowning in all age groups.

Learn CPR

In a drowning situation, every second counts.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions with artificial ventilation. It is used to manually preserve brain function.

CPR performed by bystanders has been shown to save lives and improve outcomes in drowning victims. The more quickly CPR is started, the better.

Supervise

Real life drowning accidents don’t resemble those we see on TV or movies. Most victims don’t scream or thrash in the water.

Instead, victims tend to appear lethargic and are often found unresponsive floating in the water or submerged beneath it.

Therefore, a responsible adult who knows how to swim should always be available to supervise kids who are in or around water.

You can take turns to give the supervisor a break so they can also enjoy the party but be careful never to leave kids unsupervised.

Don’t Swim Alone

It’s never a good idea to swim alone. If you get in trouble, having a buddy close by could save your life. Also, whenever possible, choose swimming sports that have lifeguards.

Use Lifejackets

Whenever you go boating or tubbing, remember to wear a lifejacket. Research shows that half of all boating deaths are preventable with the use of life jackets.

Don’t use air-filled or foam toys, such as “water wings” or “noodles” instead of life jackets. These toys are not designed to keep swimmers safe.

Avoid Alcohol

Avoid drinking alcohol before or during swimming, boating, or water skiing. Do not drink alcohol while supervising children.

Be Prepared

Always have a cell phone, first aid kit, throwing or reaching floating devices near your pool. Remember to add the phone number of your nearest Altus Emergency Center to your contact list.

When to Go to the ER

All drowning victims need emergency care, so bring them to the nearest Altus Emergency Center as soon as possible.

Even though most drowning victims are revived with first aid, they still need to be evaluated by an emergency medical doctor.

Complications of the drowning event may take time to develop; it may be hours before signs and symptoms to develop.
