Dunbar Primary Student Wellness Fair

Dunbar Primary Student Wellness Fair in Lufkin Rocks!

At the Science Fair

Nothing is better than experiencing science live! Last Friday, March 9th, 2018, staff from CHI St. Luke’s Health – Memorial enjoyed teaching kids from the Dunbar Primary School in Lufkin, Texas through science!  How did this happen?  Well, it was not one, but two fun stations that were sponsored to teach kids valuable health and prevention tips they can treasure for a lifetime.

What Did The Children Learn?

Station 1

At the Dunbar Primary Student Wellness Fair, Station 1 was a hand washing training station where students learned how to properly wash their hands. The children rubbed a safe liquid on their hands and placed them under a black light. This revealed that on the surface our hands appear clean. However, germs are everywhere. After properly washing the hands for 15 seconds, students returned to the black light to observe their hands were “clean.” This was a demonstration stressing the importance of proper hand washing.

THE CHILDREN LEARNED

If you don’t clean your hands properly, you risk having harmful germs on your hands and spreading them to others!  Learn to wash your hands correctly and frequently to avoid the spread of yucky germs!

Station 2

Now it’s time for Station number two.  At the Dunbar Primary Student Wellness Fair, students practiced staying calm and calling 911 individually on the large keypad board display, without forgetting to press the “Call” button to actually place the call. This is a step that children often forget. Children also have an issue knowing how to get into the phone app to reach the keypad.

After this exercise students learned about several medical instruments, such as the stethoscope and what they are used for and when. By the end of the session, they were able to identify each and know their proper function and use. They easily identified toy versions that would light up or mimic the results of the professional instruments. For example, the toy stethoscope would light up and mimic a heartbeat. Instruments covered were the X-Ray machine, stethoscope, ear thermometer, and syringe.

THE CHILDREN LEARNED

A bunch of cool stuff!  Not only did they learn how to dial 911 but they also learned about various medical instruments.  The super cool kids enjoyed taking X-Rays of their hands and giving us all shots! Ultimately they know the doctor is not scary, and we simply go there to receive treatment to become well.

Friendly ER Visit to Another Pumpkin Patch Preschool

Smiles & Cheer at Another Pumpkin Patch Preschool

Our Staff & Health Bear Were Thrilled to Entertain Another Pumpkin Patch Preschool!

Last Friday, March 9th, 2018 was a treat for many adorable preschoolers and their teachers at Another Pumpkin Patch Preschool.  It was a day filled with smiles and lessons learned. The daycare and preschool in Huntington, Texas whose motto is, “Learn and Grow Together” received a special treat!  The staff from CHI St. Luke’s Health Emergency Center and their life size Teddy Bear entertained the children with story time.  It is natural for both adults and little ones to be afraid of a trip to the doctor.  However, in the event of an emergency, it’s important that they learn that a trip to the ER is a good thing.  At CHI St. Luke’s Health Emergency Center, we are here to help take care of their “ouches” and “boo-boo’s” as fast as possible.

Highlights from our Visit to Another Pumpkin Patch Preschool!

Happy children, teddy bears and lots of hugs!  The children learned all about a trip to the ER and each took home a mini version of the CHI Teddy Bear to ease their fears of the ER and hospital. We really enjoyed the kids of Another Pumpkin Patch Preschool and hope they take home their lessons learned.

Cheerleading Safety Month – Cheer Safe!

National Cheerleading Safety Month

Cheering for Safety

Give us an S, an A, an F, E, T, Y!  What do we have? SAFETY! Why are we cheering? Because March is Cheerleading Safety Month, and as always, the staff at Altus Emergency Centers is cheering for your child’s safety.

Cheerleading has come a long way since it’s early days, and it is now a highly competitive and demanding sport, and like with any other sport, cheerleaders are susceptible to sports injuries. There has been a lot of debate regarding the number of injuries sustained by cheerleaders, some claim it is on the rise while others feel critical injuries have diminished in recent years thanks to new safety rules applied to the sport.

ER Treatments for Cheerleading Injuries Altus ER Centers Lumberton Texas

Common Cheerleading Injuries

Both are correct, thankfully catastrophic cheerleading injuries have declined considerably during the last decade, however, the number of cheerleader emergency room visits for non-catastrophic injuries has increased, these injuries include:

• Ankle Sprains

• Knee Injuries

• Wrist Injuries

• Shoulder Injuries

• Lower Back Pain, and Concussions

Altus ER Tips to Cheer Safe!

School cheerleading programs must have a certified cheerleading coach managing the program, and there are safety guidelines that must be followed to ensure the wellbeing of the athletes, these include:

cheer safe to avoid common injuries altus er centers texas

Using the Right Equipment

The use of landing mats is not currently mandatory either during practice sessions or performances, but these are recommended.

Most cheerleading-related injuries occur during practice especially when learning new maneuvers, it is advisable to always practice using 4-inch landing mats to avoid serious injuries.

Footgear is an important factor in injury prevention, cheerleaders should wear properly fitting rubber-soled shoes with adequate cushioning and ankle support. Additionally, flyers should consider wearing a cheering vest during practice to protect themselves from bruising and injury.

Choose a Safe Place to Practice

Back in the day when cheerleading was mostly about waving pom-poms and chanting, it was safe to practice out in the open. Because cheerleading now involves advanced acrobatics and gymnastics, practice spaces should be chosen carefully. Never practice on wet or uneven surfaces like grass or turf, instead look for smooth, level, and dry places to practice in which are clear of obstacles that may cause injury.

Stay in Shape

Cheerleading requires a great deal of strength and balance, and therefore athletes should take great care of their fitness all year-round.

Like with any sport it is important not to overdo it, cheerleaders should take time to rest between training sessions to avoid overuse injuries.

Given that cheerleading now requires gymnastic skills, it is not a bad idea to enroll your child in a gymnastics program, this will serve to improve the child’s skills, and confidence which will help prevent injuries.

Cheering for You Altus ER Centers

Stretch, Warm Up, and Cool Down

We cannot stress how important warming exercises and proper stretching techniques are, these have been proven to reduce muscle strain and prevent injuries, however, cool down exercises and after workout stretching exercises are just as important in injury prevention.

Follow Stunt Progression

The saying you need to learn to crawl before you learn to walk applies to everything in life, especially advanced gymnastic sports. Coaches need to ensure cheerleaders learn the basic skills before introducing more advanced movements and stunts.

Altus Emergency Cares About Cheerleading Safety

At Altus Emergency Centers, we applaud the level of commitment and skill being a cheerleader requires, we encourage students to challenge themselves, improve their skills and push themselves to do things they never thought were possible, but, we urge, parents, coaches, and athletes alike to always put safety first.

Blood Donations & Their Life Saving Powers

The Life Saving Powers of Blood Donations

The Importance of Blood

Blood is the sustenance of life, without adequate amounts of it flowing through our bodies, we would die.

Our bodies depend on a stable supply of oxygen and nutrients to sustain the billions of cells that make it up, no organ can survive without oxygen and nutrients which are transported throughout the body by our blood. But, blood also cleanses our bodies, it carries carbon dioxide and other waste materials to the lungs, kidneys, and intestines so they can be discharged from the body.

Blood helps regulate our body temperature, it also aids in fighting infections, it nurtures every cell and transports all waste materials, keeping us healthy.

How Many Donations Are Needed?

Every two seconds someone needs a blood transfusion and about 43,000 pints of donated blood are used every day in hospitals and emergency rooms across the country. Yet out of the 37% of eligible blood donors in the United States, only 10% donate yearly.

Donors are usually asked to give 1 pint of blood, and this single pint could save up to three lives. Today is a perfect day to become someone’s hero, by donating blood you could save someone’s father or mother, you could save a teacher or a police officer, your blood can save a child’s life.

Who Needs Your Blood?

When you donate blood, this is who you are helping:

  • 30% of blood recipients are cancer patients
  • 15% of blood recipients are suffering from heart disease
  • 15% of blood recipients are patients with bowel and stomach illnesses
  • 12% of blood recipients are burn victims
  • 12% of blood recipients have been involved in an accident
  • 6% of blood recipients are liver and kidney patients
  • 5% of blood recipients are pregnant women and babies
  • 5% of blood recipients are hemophiliacs

100% of blood recipients are someone’s loved one.

 Who can Donate Blood?

Any healthy individual over the age of 16 who weighs at least 110 lbs. can donate blood. Donors are usually asked to give 1 pint and they can donate that amount every 2 months.

What Are the Benefits of Donating Blood?

Aside from becoming a superhero who saves lives, donating blood has some surprising benefits for donors:

It May Improve Blood Flow

Sometimes our blood becomes “thick” due to high viscosity hampering its flow through our veins and arteries, this can damage the lining of the blood vessels and eventually lead to serious cardiovascular problems.

A study conducted by the American Journal of Epidemiology found that blood donors are 88% less likely to suffer from heart attacks, strokes, and cancers.

Your Iron Levels Will Stay Balanced

Healthy adults have approximately 5 grams of iron in their bodies. Iron is an essential mineral that aids in the production of red cells which are responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body.

When you donate blood, you lose roughly half a gram of iron which will get replenished from the food you consume in the days after donating. Regulating iron levels is a good thing because too much iron can damage the blood vessels while a deficiency in iron can cause anemia.

You Get a Free Mini-Checkup

Prior to donating blood, you will receive a physical exam that measures your pulse, blood pressure, and hemoglobin levels. Once you have donated a sample of your blood will be sent to the lab where it will undergo 13 different tests for infectious diseases, like HIV and West Nile Virus. If any of these tests come back positive you will be notified immediately.

This mini-checkup is free for donors and while it is not a substitute for your annual medical checkup it can help monitor your overall health.

You May Live Longer

A study published in Health Psychology found that people who volunteered for altruist purposes tend love live up to 4 years longer than those who do not volunteer to help others.

Fun Handwashing Tips for Kids

Fun Handwashing Tips for Kids

Tricks to Show Your Kids How to Wash Their Hands Correctly

This is the final day of National Handwashing Awareness Week. For adults who don’t spend a lot of time with children, this celebration might seem a little unnecessary, but to parents who are constantly trying to get their kids to wash their hands before eating, after going to the restroom and when they come inside from playing, this is an extremely important event.

As always, we at Altus ER have some effective tricks up our sleeve to help you parents instill good hygiene habits onto your kids, handwashing can seem a boring chore for kids, but we are here to help you make it less of a chore and more of a fun activity.

Teach-Your-Children-to-Wash-Their-Hands-Properly.

Why Should You Teach Your Kids Proper Handwashing Techniques?

Proper handwashing is the best way to prevent children from becoming sick and spreading germs. Teaching your kids to wash their hands with soap and water will help prevent them from contracting the following illnesses:

  • The common cold and flu virus

  • Hepatitis A

  • Meningitis

  • Bronchiolitis

  • And many types of diarrhea

What is the proper way to wash your hands?

6-Steps-to-Wash-Your-Hands-Correctly.

Are your Hands Really Clean?

A study conducted by researchers at the Michigan State University in 2013, revealed that an alarming 95% of people do not properly wash their hands.

The CDC’s guidelines for washing hands include the following steps:

  • Wet your hands with water (temperature does not matter).

  • Lather your hands with soap, make sure you apply soap to the back of your hands as well.

  • Scrub your hands for 20 seconds or more, make sure to scrub the back of your hands, wrists, in between fingers and under the fingernails.

  • Rinse with plenty of water.

  • Dry your hands thoroughly with a clean towel or air dryer.

Fun Ways to Get Your Child to Wash Their Hands

Learning-Good-Health-Habits-Can-be-Fun-with-Altus-ER-Centers-Texas

Sing a Song

The CDC recommends you sing happy birthday twice when you are scrubbing your hands to ensure you do it for at least 20 seconds, it’s probably not the best song to have your kids sing every day as they might expect a birthday present and cake.

You can create your own song about washing hands, or you can use a popular one that is sung to the tune of “Row your Boat” it goes like this: “wash, wash, wash your hands, wash them nice and clean. Scrub the fronts and scrub the backs and scrub the in-between” You will need to sing this at least twice.

Buy Fun Soaps

Kids love to play, so why not let them play with soap? Buying fun shape soap bars or liquid soap that have their favorite characters on the label is a good way to get kids to want to wash their hands.

Get Creative

Here are some more fun and creative ideas to get your kids to want to wash their hands:

  • Mix some glitter with water in a spray bottle, spray their hands with this mixture then have them wash it off, if you have more than one kid turn it into a friendly competition to see who can get the glitter off first.

  • Teach your kids how to blow soap bubbles, have them later and scrub their hands properly and then show them how they can make a circle with their thumb and forefinger and blow bubbles.

  • Buy them a water safe toy and have them give it a proper wash.

  • Make a game where you task your kids to get rid of pesky germs by scrubbing their hands, make funny noises and in the end, say bye, bye germs.

When Should You Pay Altus Emergency Centers a Visit?

Kevin Herrington Harvey Testimony Texas Senate HHS Hearing

Kevin Herrington Harvey Testimony before the Texas Senate HHS Hearing

For 5 Days, Altus Emergency was the Only Healthcare Facility Open & Operational in Hardin County

Kevin Herrington, TAFEC Board member and President of Altus Emergency Centers gave a solid testimony at the Texas State Capitol on November 8th, 2017 about the importance of Freestanding Emergency Centers in Texas.  The following is a video clip from the Texas State Capitol, Senate Committee on Health and Human Services Interim Charge Hearing followed by highlights from his testimony.

A decision was made to stay open and serve the community, because of this decision, lives were saved.

VIDEO CLIP of Kevin Herrington's Testimony

Kevin Herrington’s Testimony on Freestanding Emergency Centers During Hurricane Harvey.

Altus Emergency Centers President Speaks at the Texas State Senate About Harvey’s Impact Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

President of Altus Emergency Centers, Kevin Herrington, MBA, FACHE, spoke openly at the Texas Senate HHS Hearing making it clear that “we are fully capable of handling all types of emergencies.”

During Hurricane Harvey, Lumberton just North of Beaumont became an island.  Due to the decision of remaining open, prepared and operational, Altus Emergency Center Lumberton became the only healthcare facility in Hardin County to take 911 calls during five of the most crucially impacted days of Harvey.

We worked multiple days, 6 – 8 days straight with the supplies that we had on our hand which were for about 3 days of supplies. – KH.

Although requests were made on several occations for additonal supplies and were refused all times, “We were able to provide for ourselves the additional days of supplies through other sources.”  Today, the residents of Hardin county are grateful for the care Altus Emergency Centers delivered during Harvey.

Among the patients treated, there were life and death cases.

The types of patients that we would see were critical patients, they were traumas, electrocutions, broken bones an oxygenated patient on a respirator. 49% of the patients were on compensated care.

During Kevin Herrington’s testimony, he stressed the importance of the lessons learned during Harvey.  The four main points that we should keep in mind for the future of Texas:

1.  We have proven that we can manage emergencies.  Altus Emergency Center Lumberton demonstrated that we are well capable of handling emergencies.

2.  Help us allow Medicaid in Freestanding Emergency Centers.  This will allow us to help save more lives during times of urgency.

3.  Help us with the code related to Texas Emergency Centers which is currently restrictive to allow for more scope of care to provide more assistance to the communities that we serve.  “For example,” expressed KH, “the only CT machine can only be used for emergency patients and not for the outpatient population.”

4.  This is a good model to follow.  If we are recognized by Medicare / Medicaid and our scope is flexible, this is a good resource for rural Texas. This will allow freestanding emergency centers to into rural communities to provide much needed high quality healthcare.

Thank you to the Altus Emergency Center staff, which put their own personal needs aside, and banded together to put the lives of our Texas communities first.  With all of your help we were able to keep our facilities in Baytown, Lake Jackson, Lumberton, and Waxahachie open before, during and after the storm.  Thank you Team Altus ER for always offering much needed medical attention to patients who otherwise would not have received any attention, we saved lives in the process and that is ultimately our mission.

10 Deer Hunting Season Safety Tips

Deer Hunting Season Safety

According to the latest Texas Parks and Wildlife hunting incident analysis, the number of hunting accidents across the state has significantly decreased since the hunter education program became mandatory in 1988.

Last year, there were 24 reported hunting accidents involving either a firearm or a bow and another 3 non-firearm/bow hunting-related incidents. Out of the 24 incidents involving a firearm/bow, 5 were fatal, and 2 of the non-firearm/bow hunting-related incidents resulted in death. Sadly, all these incidents were easily preventable, had the hunters followed correct hunting protocols.

This weekend marks the start of the general deer hunting season for white-tailed deer, while mule deer hunting season will commence on November 18th. The staff of Altus Emergency Centers is all too familiar with hunting-related accidents, which is why we would like to remind the members of our communities how easy it is to avoid incidents by just following these safety tips.

Enjoy Deer Hunting Season the Safe Way

  • Make Yourself Visible: Texas law requires that all hunters on public hunting lands wear at least 400 square inches of hunter orange material, of which 144 must be on the chest and back areas, orange headgear is also mandatory. Avoid using colors and patterns that blend with your surroundings.

  • Always Point the Muzzle in a safe direction: Never rest the muzzle on your foot, always point the muzzle in a safe direction. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire and never fire your hunting weapon unless you are sure your target is an actual deer.

  • Assume Every Gun is Loaded: Whenever you up a firearm point the muzzle in a safe direction and check if it is loaded. Be sure the chamber and the magazine are empty, and the action is open until ready to fire. Always have the safety on until you are ready to fire.

  • Identify your Target and Know what is In Front of and Beyond It: Use binoculars to properly identify game animals, never use your scope to identify them. Make sure there are no hunters or dogs in front of or beyond your target. Never shoot at an animal is on top of a hillside since you don’t know what lies beyond it. Understand how far your bullets or arrows can travel to determine the chances of hitting an unintended target.

  • Never Shoot at Flat Hard Surfaces: Bullets ricocheting off rocks, the ground and unbelievably even water can cause terrible injuries to people nearby.

  • Handle Firearms and Bows Carefully: Guns and hunting bows are not toys, never leave weapons unattended around children, always unload firearms and unstring bows when not in use. Store and transport firearms and ammunition separately, make sure they are under lock and key. Carry arrows in a protective cover or quiver.

  • Know Your Safe Zone: Hunters should be spaced 25 to 40 yards apart and always in sight of one another. A hunter’s safe zone of fire normally spans about 45 degrees in front them, but, the hunting party should make the final determination based on how experienced the hunters are. For safety purposes, there should be no more than 3 hunters in a party, for young or inexperienced hunters 2 is preferable.

  • Don’t Drink Alcohol or Take Drugs When Hunting: The use of alcohol and drugs impairs physical and mental abilities, they affect emotions, judgment, vision, and reflexes, increasing the chances of injury.

  • Be Careful When Using a Tree Stand: Always use a full body safety harness when climbing up or down the tree stands, don’t remove it until you are safely down from it. Use your own tree stand and make sure it is installed properly.

  • Keep Your Loyal Companion Safe:  Make sure that you equip your pet with proper deer hunting gear and train them accordingly to keep them safe.
